#2 of Cassandra's Curse - Project Paused

Without a job Cassandra's got to figure out a way to find a new one. There is someone she could turn to for help, but she doesn't even know if she can trust him... what choice can she have when she needs a job though?

Part Two: Uncomfortable Realisations

Home was uncomfortably quiet for Cassandra. A note scribbled on the fridge told her that Duke had headed out to work early due to an emergency call. It made Cassandra terribly unhappy as she trudged to the sofa and slumped against it with a growl. She needed someone to moan to, to understand her anger about loosing the job. These days no female could get a good job; there were restrictions on everything from sex to species to even breed! She'd tried every avenue to get that particular job and now it was gone.

Cassandra had always refused one route to a job though!

You could say she did not want to gain a job through nepotism but it was much more then that. Cassandra's friend Maxim Grant was a very wealthy animal but a former one-night stand. He'd always been her friend but that night she'd been so drunk that she only remembered flashes of the passion. Worst of all, it had been His bachelor party - the bride had been her friend too and Cassie had skipped the wedding out of embarrassment, and lost that friend after the divorce.

She'd assumed herself as having ruined his life and her life... but he'd rung her straight after the final settlement to ask her for a drink and because Duke had been around, Cassandra had backed out quickly. She could hardly imagined how it would have worked out between them, well... she could but she tried hard not to think about it. That damn dog had always seemed to know more about her body then she did; in fact with hindsight he'd probably been after her for quite a while as he'd groped her playfully on more then one occasion that she'd simply brushed aside. But as much as Cassandra did not want to remember that night, her eyes started to close and her mind started to wander back to the few fragments of memory from it all and of that damn saluki's curious way of speaking that always made her body shudder.

She tried hard not to think of that long muzzle, the silky softness of his fur or jus how flexible he was. She tried hard to forget that extra sensation of the pinching leather straps that had held her paws to the bed, of the fact he'd tried to blindfold her, but being so drunk and giggly she'd wriggled about so much he'd laughed at how only one eye had been covered. She tried to forget the sensation of his hot body against hers, the way his slightly clawed nails streaked playfully around her belly and had then probed deep into her crevice with some silly comment about how wet she was. She tried too not to remember his hot breath upon her neck, the sound of his panting, his lolling tongue as he'd pushed in so hard she'd ended sitting upward and howling in pain and pleasure when he'd knotted in her. She'd tried to forget the sensation of his hot seed spilling out of her and the way they'd giggled over it and she'd then chewed at his long feathered ears!

Oh dear... she couldn't remember a time when she'd been so obsessed with ears she held on during a knot... to be honest Duke didn't have ears big enough. Her mastiff partner's flat ears barely ever seemed to dangle within range of her nipping teeth and he'd always insisted on wearing a collar so she'd hang off that during a tie instead of the folds on his neck. It was just so no one said anything at work; Duke already got enough shit from his fellows just because Cassandra was a Rottweiler and not another mastiff! It's just what happened when you were a pedigree... although no one had said anything about Maxim marrying a golden retriever and he was from an ancient line dating back to Persia!

"Stop it Cassandra! You'll get wet if you keep thinking about Max! You can't have him... you've got Duke who actually gives a shit about more then sex with you. Hell, Duke wants to have kids with you... Max would just bed you and leave you!" She growled, thinking over the countless girlfriends he'd had before and how he'd bragged on getting any girl thanks to his money. He'd never shown the same interest he gave them to her of course, but that was just because Cassie's dad had been his father's bodyguard.

Maybe... maybe there was a slim chance he needed a tough Rottweiler bodyguard like her?

"Stop it! If we ended up working with him... Duke would never look at us the same again!" Cassandra snarled as she considered everything that had happened after that one night stand. How Duke had stood up for her when Maxim's visiting cousin had tried to force her in a backroom after getting her just as drunk. Max had just sat there and done nothing, waiting to see if she really was so easy when she was drunk. But Cassie had fought and Duke had bloodied the guy's nose to help her out then. He'd just been off work and with his friends at the club, he'd chatted to her briefly and then Max had dragged her away to meet his cousin. She'd really owed Duke for that, after-all Max had proved he was not going to do a thing about it!

But despite herself, Cassandra found her fingers clasping her mobile phone and seeking out the secret name she'd given to hide Maxim's phone number from Duke's eyes. It was not that Duke had ever gone looking through her phone, he was too much a gentleman to do that, but phone calls could never be so guaranteed. So Cassandra found the number and flicked the button before taking a heavy gulp and wishing she had some vodka to help her courage. The phone wasn't ringing long before the gravelly voice answered and questioned her, with excitement even!

"Cassandra? Cassie is that you? I haven't heard from you in nearly a year - how are you?" The voice was far too excited for Cassandra to just hang up although every instinct screamed she should. But taking another deep breath she nodded at the phone, only to hear him repeat in some confusion. "Uh... Cassandra are you there?"

"Yeah... hi Maxim. Uh... look, this isn't a social calling - I'm ringing because I've got a favour to ask. I wouldn't be asking unless I was desperate, but do you have any need for someone like me in your employ?" Cassandra tried not to rush her words, tried not to shudder as she heard what must have been a smile creasing the lips of that dog on the phone. She sat in silence for a few moments, her paw trembling furiously as she gripped the phone and pressed it as close to her ears as she dared. She knew she shouldn't be doing this, but if he could take her on, she'd just tell Duke she had a new job - he didn't need to know where, heck she didn't have to tell her partner she had lost her first job!

"You still there?" The voice questioned a little more harshly and Cassandra wanted to run away but cleared her throat and spoke. The voice on the other end went silent for a second before seeming to stroll over the right words to use or what to say... as if he were staring at a computer screen whilst twisting the phone wires about his paws. That was impossible of course; he had a mobile just like her... but it was what she thought. "I've got something... but you'd have to get over here ASAP so we can talk about it. Technically, it wouldn't be working for my company as much as working for me. Will Duke be alright with that?"

"Yes of course." Cassandra fibbed and something told her that Maxim had probably guessed this to be a lie. But when he gave her an address to his house and a phone number to use instead of this one, Cassandra diligently wrote it down on a nearby envelope before agreeing to meet and then putting the phone down. The moment she did she began to sob.... "Why did I just do that?"
