Part 4: The broken world
#4 of Chronicles of Drias
Part 4 of the backgroundstory and life of Drias, a normal average cheetah-anthro which ended up becoming a cybernetical hybrid.
Dawn, the event that changed the course of destiny of a once prosperous world. The year was 2130 when she struck, a meteorite. The meteorite wasn't large enough to cause that much damage on itself, and therefore it wasn't given that much of a priority at first. The danger however came with what Dawn brought with her; a nanite virus, living technology unseen by this world. When the nanite virus was first uncovered, scientist greedily and carelessly took parts of it with them to study, thinking their own technology could contain it. How wrong they were...They were correct in one statement: it would bring a new age of evolvement of technology, unlike any advancements before.

_Their arrogance only made it certain the virus could spread faster; it now had access to the network it needed to spread. It didn't take more than a week before the blackout started; our technology failed on us. And the worst had yet to come; both flora and fauna slowly became infected with the nanite virus, evolving into hybrid synthetic organisms. Nanite forests emerged; trees that bonded with the virus and that had transformed into shimmering black synthetic alloyed woods. A faint blue glow could be seen pulsing underneath the black alloy, which made the forest stand out at night with an eerie blue shine. _

Humans and anthro's that were infected either died or became droids; half mechanical beings driven on pure instinct and survival. They wouldn't attack unless provoked; it seemed they didn't see the fully organic world as a threat. When provoked, they were hard to take down and were more than capable of handling small armies on their own. The infected became known as the "Reapers" and such the "Reaper virus" was born. Those that were infected and kept their sanity were banished out of fear. Gradually they start to band together and formed small settlement. Most of those settlements could be found in the nanite forests or "the black wastelands"; the lands that were fully covered with the black gleaming nanite material. A new ecosystem started to slowly establish itself in our midst where both technology and organism were one. Over time, the larger cities fell into decay and became ghost town. And thus, the largest of continents didn't belong to organics anymore. Only the ocean sheltered some of the smaller continents against the spread, those that weren't infected through the travelling folks at the start of Dawn.
A lot of humans and anthro's went into hiding underground or established themselves into the more harsher climates of the world where the reaper virus did not reach yet. After the threat became apparent, some islands and 2 smaller continents started setting up defences against the Spread; whole cities and islands were locked away from the rest of the world by massive force fields, which constantly switched frequency against the adaptation of the reaper virus. Within these force fields life became selfsustaining by agriculture and farming.A fairly normal life was established within the forcefields, however, fear that the Reaper Virus would eventually break through was always present.
Within some of these safehavens, certain factions continued their research on the reaper virus in secrecy; trying to set the virus to their own hand, with the risk of infecting the whole population. Some of these were connected and called Sanctuaries, all designated with a number. In one of these Sanctuaries, Sanctuary 25, D.R.I.A.S. was reborn....designated as project XA25, an experimental adaptation of the reaper virus.
