A young man joins a role-playing game, but the game-master is a wizard, and turns him into his character: a female kitsune bard. Then he sends her on a quest to find a lost book....
I awoke the next morning laying on my back beside Koleb, glad that at least this morning I didn't have morning sickness. Then I looked over at him: he was sound asleep, his furry chest rising and falling, a slight smile on his mask. I smiled myself, thinking of yesterday: after the wedding, we had made love five times, all day long....
I guess I had wore him out. I gazed lovingly at his handsome, athletic todd body, the body that had brought me so much pleasure, and I pulled the blanket back to reveal all of him to me. I noticed then that he had morning wood, and the warm tingly sensation of female arousal poured through me as I looked at his cock. Then, a naughty thought occurred to me....
I climbed over Koleb's sleeping frame on all fours, took his erect penis in my hand-paw, and slid down on it, straddling his hips. I moaned as I felt his cock slide through my flesh, opening me and stretching me out. I felt it throbbing in me to his heartbeat, filling my vagina. God, it felt good in me, completing me....
Koleb moaned in his sleep, then snorted and opened his eyes. I put my hands under my breasts and hefted them for him to see. Damn, my tits felt sore this morning, swollen and achy. Still, I managed to rub my nipples with my thumbs until they came erect, smiling down at Koleb as he looked up at me, a smile slowly dawning on his mask.
I cocked my head a little, lowing an ear. "So what do you want to do today, husband?", I asked.
His mask took on a visage of joy, and he said "Let's make love again, and then open the presents, wife."
So I began to work my hips against his, sliding his cock back and forth inside me deliciously, moaning in pleasure and playing with my nipples, my tits too sore for attention. Then he grabbed me by the waist and rolled me over onto my back so that he was on top, and he began to fuck me.
Soon I was crying out as ever-increasing waves of pleasure rolled through me to his thrusting, finally reaching a peak, and I came, crying out his name. Then shortly afterward, he came in me, and we where resting beside each other on the bed.
We held each-others hand-paws for a little while, and then I excused myself and got up to go to the latrinum, doing my business and washing the cum off my pussy fur. When I came out, Koleb was already up and getting dressed. I joined him, putting on my old dress and sandals, and we walked out into the living-room to unwrap the presents.
Most turned out to be kitchen implements, and little things like expensive fine steel needles and thread, and other house-making gifts. Some where just money, about twenty gold pieces in change in small pouches. Some where clothes, including a beautiful white silk gown that must have cost a small fortune. But one was a small gold idol of a pregnant woman with massive breasts sitting in a lotus position - a fertility idol? Whatever it was, it looked expensive, because it was solid gold, and it weighed as much as the coins. Then I read the card that came attached, and found it was from Sensuella. It said: "To a safe delivery and many more to come."
I wondered if I was supposed to pray to it, and in this world, if that would actually work....
And I wondered how she had found out I was pregnant; I guess the temple healer had told her....
We gathered up all the wedding presents and put them away, then gathered the trash for the trash collector into the wooden box out front. Done, Koleb kissed me said "I have three days off for our honeymoon. Where do you want to go?"
I thought about it. Three days off with Koleb....
"I don't know", I replied. "What do people do for fun in Sarnath?"
"We could go see the gladiator fights in the Colosseum", he said. "They even have naval battles there sometimes...."
I shook my head. "That sounds barbaric. I don't want to see people die", I replied.
"Oh, only the criminals die", he said. "And the monsters and fantastical beasts. Come on, it's really fun!"
I stared at him, ears flat, but he seemed positively enthusiastic about it, and I admit I was a little bit curious about seeing the Colosseum, so I gave in.
"Okay", I said, "let me pack a lunch...."
So I went into the kitchen and loaded the new basket I had got as a wedding gift with bread, meat, cheese, and strawberries from the garden. Then I added a bottle of wine for Koleb, and filled an empty wine bottle with water for myself.
Together, we set out to the main thoroughfare and found an omnibus that was headed to the Colosseum. When we arrived, it looked every bit as spectacular as the one in Rome, clad in marble, with short lines of patrons around it's dozens of entrances.
We stood in line, paid a silver coin apiece, and where led to moderately good seats. There, we watched the fights. Koleb stood and cheered for the gladiators, but I could only watch in stunned horror as animals and people where slaughtered. After awhile, Koleb noticed that I wasn't enjoying myself, and suggested that we go to the amphitheater instead, and watch the actors perform.
I agreed, and we left to find an omnibus that would take us there. Half an hours ride later, and two more silver coins, and we where watching ancient comedies in a vast semi-circular stone amphitheater designed for acoustics. We laughed and had a good time, and ate our food until the sun began to set, then we took an omnibus back down the main thoroughfare, and walked the onyx-paved side-streets of Sarnath until we where home.
I thanked Koleb for a wonderful evening, and we ate dinner together and then retired to the bedroom to make love.
The next day, Koleb took me on a tour of Sarnath's temples, palaces, and parks, and we ate at some really expensive restaurants. On the third day, we went to the beach and swam in the nude, like everyone else, and ate our pic-nick lunch on the sand among the trees.
It was a fun time, and I really felt happy just being with him - my husband, and the father of my child.
But the next day, we where back to work as usual. I asked Sensuella what I was supposed to do with the idol, and she told me to light incense in it's lap and rub it's belly, and keep it in my room. Her name, I was told, was Dea Matrona, and she would insure a safe pregnancy and delivery.
When I got to the pool, the girls all gathered around me and asked me if I was pregnant yet. I sighed, and told them I was, and they squealed in delight and congratulated me, asking if it was a boy or a girl. I told them it was a boy, and they told me how lucky I was to be having a boy....
So I played and sang and danced all day until evening, then headed to the scribes to pick up the last of the translated books, hoping against hope that one of them was the lost book. And then I headed home to Koleb.
I made dinner, and put the books on the table to read. More elvish and Djiin mysteries, but nothing by Abremalin, and no dimensional teleport spell. And that was it; no more books. It looked like my only choice was to go with the rogue.
When Koleb got home, we kissed and had dinner. And I brought up the quest. A pained expression came over his mask, and he asked me what I had planned.
"We're going on the weekend, so you have the day off work", I said. "We'll be taking Keo the rogue, and Pindar the wizard with us."
He nodded. "I'll be ready", he said, "but I can't wait to put this dangerous stunt behind us."
"I know you can't", I told him, "but it has to be done."
The next few days went by unexceptionally, unless you count occasional bouts of morning sickness and sore, swollen breasts. Then came the day that I felt a tiny lump in my belly where my womb was.... And that reminded me that I was pregnant, with Koleb's and my child, and I spent the rest of the day smiling in wonder. That evening, I stopped in the market to buy some incense to burn in the idol's lap, and that night I rubbed its belly, just on the off chance it did anything.
Then the day came when I saw Keo and Delf in the audience, right on schedule.
Once my song was over, I signaled to the bards that I needed a break, and went to sit with them. We ate a little, and I asked Keo if he was ready. He assured me he was.
"Then let's meet at my place at sunset tonight, and we'll go over the map. On the weekend, we'll strike. In the meantime, enjoy the show and stay until quitting time, so I can walk you to my place."
He nodded. "That will give me time to prepare my gear", he said, and I went back up on the stage and performed for the rest of the evening.
When I was done, I changed clothes and came back out to meet Keo. "Ready to go?", I asked.
"Sure", he replied. He kissed Delf goodbye, and the two of us set off for the house.
One inside, I pulled the scroll-case containing the map from the top of the cabinet, and unrolled it for him on the dining room table. "This is our target", I said, pointing to the circled tower. "The tower of Abremalin the Mage."
He started to go over the map, and I started to prepare dinner for three. Then Koleb got home. I introduced Keo, and they shook hands. They sat down to eat, and I poured them wine, with water for myself.
Keo asked us everything we knew about the tower, and we described our last visit in detail. The story of the guardian bird statue and the magical plate and goblet made him grin. "I could really use an ever-full goblet", he said. "You want to leave this weekend morning?"
I nodded. The sooner the better - I didn't want to wait weeks or months, not with a growing pregnancy.
"Then I'll see you that morning", he said, and with that we said our good-bye's, and he left.
"Do you really trust him not to stab us in the back and make off with all the gold?", asked Koleb.
"Not really", I replied, "but it will be three to one...."
Koleb smiled down at me, and we kissed. Then we went to the bedroom and made love.
The next day, I went to the Wizard's Guild to meet with Pindar, and pay him his hundred gold. I told him we would come for him this weekend morning, and he nodded and agreed. Then I went to work for the next two days, until the weekend arrived.
Finally, the designated morning arrived, and as I was serving breakfast there came a knock at the door. It was Keo, the master burglar. He was wearing leather armor, and carrying a short sword, a rapier, several daggers, and a quarter-staff. I invited him in and set a place for him, and the three of us ate.
Then we got into our gear, shouldered our packs, grabbed the map, and headed off to the Wizard's Guild.
We stood in the usual line, then waited while the mage sent his raven to seek Pindar. Then another half hour waiting for him. But at least he was fully equipped, carrying a backpack and staff and wearing his saffron robes.
So we took to the streets of Sarnath, until we came to a wide enough street to have an omnibus route, and from there we caught the omnibus to the lake-shore piers on the far side of the city.
One the way, we discussed the treasure. I told them we would each get a quarter of the treasure, "but any books we find are mine. I need the lost book of Abremalin the Mage". They asked what was so important about that book, and I lied and told them I didn't know, but that a wizard wanted it and that was my quest. Pindar asked if he could copy it, and I told him yes.
Arriving at the piers, Koleb quickly found us a small sailed skiff for rent, and we sailed out into the preternaturally calm green waters of the lake of Ib. Shortly after noon, we arrived at the ruined moss-covered green stone wharves of Ib, and we found a place to tie up the boat.
We got out, and using the map and a protractor-looking thingy, Koleb oriented us on Abremalin's tower. And so we set off through the ruins of Ib, occasionally climbing rubble, and always keeping a sharp lookout.
We arrived at the tower. Pindar cast detect magic, but nothing had changed since the time we had left. Keo carefully checked the door for traps, although we assured him we had been through it before. "That was nearly a month ago", he growled, then admitted it had no traps. He opened it.
Inside was the same gloomy circular room, with a rotting wooden table. We had taken the magical platter and goblet, but the bird statue was still there where we had last seen it.
"Is that the bird statue that comes to life?", Keo asked, looking at me.
I nodded. "What I would give for those eyes", he said, looking at the jewels the statue had for eyes.
Then he cleared his throat and said: "The first place I'm going to try is the floor of the tower". And then he took his staff and began to tap the stones of the floor.
We watched in silence as he found loose stone in the corner of the room, then emptied water from his canteen onto the floor and watched where it drained. Then he took out a piece of chalk, and marked a doorway. He got up: "Pindar, check that door for wards."
Pindar nodded and in that strange guttural chant he used he cast detect magic. "It's another fire ward", he said. "Stand back, I'm going to dispel it."
He threw some kind of salt on it, said some magic words, and there was a flash of light and a sound like thunder. Then he cast detect magic again, and announced "It's gone. We can proceed."
"Not before I check it for traps", said Keo, taking out a small, very thin strip of metal and probing around it's edges. "No sign of triggers", said Keo, "I guess it's safe to move."
And he started lifting all the stones out of place, revealing a locked wooden door.
Pindar checked it for wards, Keo checked it for traps, and then he unlocked it and threw it open.
I along stairway of sea-green stones wound into the darkness, and a dank smell came up.
"Shall we?", I asked. Pindar cast a_light_ spell on the tip of his staff, and Keo led the way into the darkness, probing with with his quarterstaff and stepping lightly while Pindar cast detect magic, looking for more wards.
After thirty-three steps we came to the bottom: a small green stone landing with an iron portcullis on one side, beyond which a corridor stretched thirty feet and then turned left.
Pindar cast detect magic_on the portcullis and said: "It's magical. Abremalin probably used a magic word to lift it. If you give me a moments, I can cast_identify and try to divine the word...."
Keo tested the portcullis, shaking it. "Save your spells. If we all work together, we can lift it", he said. So we did, and lifted it enough to lever it up with my wooden shield, crawl under, and then remove my shield and lower.
Once on the other side, we continued cautiously down the corridor, moving stealthily as Keo checked for traps and secret apertures while Pindar cast detect magic.
We rounded the corner and came to an arch, beyond which was a broad room with a wide rectangular pool in it's middle, and with a wooden door to the left and another arch on the other side of the pool.
"What do you think?", said Keo, "Abremalin's bath room?"
I wondered how the bath was heated when he used it. Probably by magic, I thought.
"Let's skirt around the pool and take the far archway out", I suggested, feeling my oats from years of leading adventurers into dungeons in role-playing games back on Earth.
I looked around, and everyone nodded. So we made our way to the right hand side of the room, and down that side.
That's when we noticed something moving in the water: it looked almost like a blob, but covered with eyes, mouths, and tentacles. I drew my short-sword, and in an instant Keo's rapier was out, and Koleb had his cutlass at the ready.
It swam towards us, undulating through the water.
"What is it?", I whispered.
"That's an aberation, a life form created through magic. One of Abremalin's pets, no doubt", said Pindar.
I wondered how long it had been down here without food as it swam eerily to our edge of the pool, tentacles waving. Then it did something unexpected, and flowed _out_of the pool, coming straight towards us!
Years of role-playing experience came to the forefront, and I shouted "No mercy!", and charged it, hacking off tentacle after tentacle, only to get smacked in chest with a big tentacle from no-where, knocking the breathe out of me. Then a bolt of fire shot past me from Pindar, and into the creature. But by then, Koleb and Keo where in the fight as well, Koleb slashing and Keo poking it's eyes out with his rapier while keeping the tentacles back with his short-sword.
I recovered my wind, and together we hacked it into pieces until it was just a mound of quivering flesh.
"Well, that was unpleasant", I opined.
"Surely but the first of many surprises we shall find", said Keo.
We continued on way past the pool and through the archway. Beyond was long corridor that extended into darkness. I motioned for us to continue, and we stealthily walked down the corridor, detecting for magic, secret apertures, and traps as we went.
It ended in a strong looking brown wooden door. We checked it, and the Keo tried to open it, but it was stuck. It took all our strengths to open the door.
Beyond was a room full of metal cages. In fact, it looked like a kind of prison, with four rows of cages, six cages in each. There was a door on the far side of the room, and another door to the right.
"Let's keep moving right", I said, remembering the Greek solution of the Phoenician maze problem: if you keep your right on the wall and keep walking, eventually you will come to the end of the maze, even if that means searching most of it. And I intended to search the whole dungeon to find the book....
The door to the right turned out to be a store room and kitchen, partly filled with with piles of long-since rotted food. No doubt to feed his prisoners. Or test subjects. Whatever they where.
So we went to the far door and tried that. It opened on another green stone corridor leading of to a "T" intersection, so we carefully made our way down the corridor to the "T", checking and moving stealthily. Both corridors went about thirty feet and ended in wooden doors.
"Which way boss?", asked Keo.
"We keep right", I said.
We went to the door on the right, checked it, and Keo pulled it open with some effort, as it was slightly stuck.
Inside was a study, with two wooden doors to the left and far side. In the room was a reading table and chair, and a book-shelf against one wall, partly stacked with book.Score!, I thought. Strangely, there was no way to read in here: there where no sconces for oil, and no oil lanterns. Abremalin must have lit everything with magic, I thought.
I went over to the bookshelf and began reading titles. What few that where in common where about anatomy, medicine, and magic. Pindar joined me as I read over them for about fifteen minutes, but none seemed to have been penned by Abremalin himself. In fact, they mostly seemed to be about transformation and shape-changing, not dimensional travel.
"Are any of these the book?", asked Pindar.
"I don't know, but I don't think so."
And there where too many books to easily carry. "Let's come back for the books", I suggested, stuffing a few with gold leaf and the most ornate book illumination and pictures into my backpack, thinking they might be the most valuable.
We decided to try the door on the far side of the room next, and Pindar told us it was warded. He cast_dispel magic_ on it, and there was the familiar flash of light and sound of thunder. "I have only one of those left, and then we'll have to call it quits if we find another warded door", said Pindar.
I nodded, and gestured for Keo, who checked the door for traps, finding none.
It was locked, so we waited as Keo took out his lock-picks and picked it. He opened the door into a bedroom.
In it was a four-corner feather bed with a cloth roof and silk cushions and blankets, a wash basin with no source of water, a chest-of-drawers, and a chamber pot. Pindar cast detect magic, and said that the wash basin was magical. "More conjury", he said: "it probably conjures and dissipates water on command."
Then he turned to face the chest-of-drawers. "Something magical in one of the drawers", he said. "Looks like conjury again."
Right. "I think this is Abremalin's bedroom", I sated. "Let's search it."
Keo searched under the bed, while Pindar went to the chest-of-drawers, pulling out clothes until he produced a small black wand.
"Found it", he said. Then he took out a small cup and an owls feather, filled the cup with wine from his canteen, and stirred it with the feather while gazing at the wand. Finally, he said "It's a wand of lightning bolts! And very high rank at that! Worth a lot of gold...."
He put the wand into his belt.
We found nothing else of interest in the bedroom, so moved back out to the study, and tried the door to the left. It wasn't warded or locked, and it turned out, it lead to a latrinum which smelled strangely of roses.
"The scent is magical", said Pindar. Keo walked up to the toilet and dropped a copper coin in. It made a splashing sound far below.
"Okay, we've checked out this side of the "T", now it's time to check out the other", I said.
We headed back into the "T" corridor, this time heading to the left door. After checking the door, we found it was stuck, but Keo got it open with a little effort.
Beyond green stone room with a door on the far side, a white cloth draped over the ceiling, and what looked like a surgery in the middle. It had an operating table, and a collection of surgical instruments on a smaller table beside it. Against one wall was an anatomy dummy, showing all the veins and arteries under the skin.
Pindar put the surgical instruments into a small bag, and stuffed them in his back-pack. "Those where masterwork instruments", he said. "Worth a bit of money, I'd say."
"He must have done his medical experiments here", I said, wondering what kind of man Abremalin really was. "Let's take the far door."
So we checked it, forced it open, and found another long corridor of green stone leading off into darkness. As we stealthily walked it, Pindar stopped us. "There's a ward in this corridor", he said. "Lightning type. This will be my last_dispel magic."_
Pindar cast his spell, there was a flash of light and a blast of thunder, and he announced the way was clear.
We moved down the corridor to a stone door at it's end. Keo checked it, found a locking mechanism, and swung it open.
Beyond was a large empty green stone room, with doors to the left and right. In the center of the room was a large magical circle painted on the ground, full of weird angles and intricate writing, with a smaller circle in it's center. Pindar cast detect magic on it and announced "This is for summoning. For demon's, I think."
We avoided the magic circle, and went to the door to the right. This opened into a small cloak room, with a dozen black cowled leather cloaks hanging on hooks. Pindar checked to see if any where magical, but none where.
We checked the door on the left, with a little effort swung it open. It opened onto another green stone corridor that went thirty feet and ended in another wooden door. We went down the corridor the same as always, and checked the door. It was locked, so Keo stealthily picked it. Then, with no effort at all, he swung it open.
Beyond was a medium sized green stone room, with a wooden door on the far side. But in the center of the room was a table, and sitting around it where four figures in armor with scimitars and war bows, playing cards over a smile pile of coins. The turned to look at us, and I saw they where orcs.
We all drew weapons, and one orc shouted an order to the others and they charged us....
