Kate's heart pounded hard as she slowly walked with her three pups, Stinky, Runt, and Claudette, to her father's den. She didn't want to leave but, like always, she had to go. Every other month, there would be a scouting trip for the alpha wolves and this month, Kate and only the top alphas were able to go. She didn't know why, but it seemed like it was because of the decrease in caribou population. No longer were there plenty of healthy and strong caribou roaming the valley but only few weak ones. Every day, there would be smaller portions of food for the growing pack. Unlike before, the caribou didn't seem to be coming back.
Kate started to grow uneasy. She didn't want to go this time, something in her made this whole trip seem like a bad idea. "Maybe we should just move out of the valley?" She'd hate to see the happiness taken away from them if they moved somewhere else. "Still, it might be better for them," Kate murmured, nearing the edge of the rock that led straight to the cave.

They would soon understand the ups and downs to hunting caribou.
Kate rounded the corner and squinted her eyes against the morning sun. Looking downwards, Kate saw a shadow glide towards her. Her father, Winston, was approaching her, his grey fur blowing in the breeze.

"Mom," Kate called, pulling away from Winston and walking towards the den's entrance.
"Yes dear?" Eve greeted her daughter.
"I'm going to miss you," Kate rubbed her head against her mother's.
"Me too, Kate," Eve seemed to fake a sad sigh, "but isn't this trip going to be cut short?"
"No, it's supposable longer than the rest,"
"Longer?" Eve looked over at Winston, "Honey, I thought you said shorter."
"Eve, Kate will only be gone another week or so,"
"Still,"
"Mom, Dad, don't worry," Kate assured her parents, "I'll be back before you know it."
"Okay, be safe honey!" Eve smiled, "Pups! Come say goodbye to your mother!"
All three of Kate's puppies piled out of the den and embraced her, bidding goodbyes and good wishes. After a few minutes, Kate was finally able to leave and head off to meet Garth, Lilly, and Humphrey.
"Kate!" Humphrey bounded towards his mate as he saw her walking towards him.
"Humphrey!" Kate and Humphrey tightly embraced each other, licking ears and laughing.
"We're just like we were when we were kids, remember?" asked Humphrey.
