I awoke the next morning to Greg kissing me awake. I looked up at him, and he smiled down at me. My new husband, I thought, trying to smile for him. "It's time for breakfast", said Greg, and we got out of bed and made breakfast in the nude.
Greg asked me what I wanted to do today, and I told him I wanted to go to the lab and check on the progress of my file decryption.
"Tell me again", said Greg, "what's so important about those files?"
They where, I thought, the only link I had to my past, and to the Indianapolis Army of the Resistance, and what they had done to me. But I lied to him and told him "I just want to know more about the people who built it."
"I think we should get the Junkmaster, and sell the rest of those cars", he suggested. That sounded like a good idea: more money was something we could probably use.
So after breakfast, we got dressed and headed to Adam the Junkmasters work. We told him we had found several locked cars in perfect condition, and needed him to make keys for us to open them. He remembered us from the last time we had talked to him, and told us he would be right with us. He went and got his locksmith equipment, put up a "closed" sign in the door, and followed us out to our car.
We headed out to the lab, and drove into the parking lot. There where still a half-dozen cars left. He was overjoyed at the sight of them, and told us he would pick all the locks and start them if he could keep one of the flying ones. We agreed, but only if he kept the location of the lab a secret. He nodded at that, and began to make keys for the cars.
Meanwhile, I used my red key-card to get back into the lab and headed for the admin room and the computer. It had finished decrypting several new files, so I printed them out and gave them a once over. One was a detailed description of the test subjects, with names and histories. I began to read.
All the test subjects had either been students of political science, or held degrees in it. That came as a surprise. Now I knew how I had been chosen, but not why. I wondered why the Resistance was looking for twenty-first century political scientists....
Maybe, I thought, they wanted us to write their propaganda.
I took the files, and then headed back out. Outside, Adam had managed to get one of the winged cars started. We told him to follow us home and we would come back tomorrow.
Over the next several days, we managed to retrieve and sell all the remaining cars. We raised almost a thousand pieces of gold, mostly from the two other flying cars, which commanded a high price.
During that time, I noticed some changes going on in my body: my breasts would sometimes ache, and they felt a little swollen and puffy....
I wondered if they where growing, now that I was pregnant. I made a point to ask Ellen about it.
Also, I noticed that I could feel a tiny hard lump under my belly where my womb was: the baby, growing inside of me.
Then came the morning a few days later when I woke up feeling nauseous, and barely made it to the back door in time to throw up. Greg got up immediately, and came to put his arm around me.
"Are you okay?", he asked. "Are you sick?"
I shook my head. "It's just morning sickness Greg. Pregnant women get it", I told him, wiping my mouth.
He nodded, and feeling better, I went back in with him and we had breakfast.
I decided I needed to know more about what to expect about being pregnant, and told him I needed to go to the library in Solarville. That was fine with him, he said, he wanted to do some shopping.
So we got in the van and drove to the ivy covered library, where he dropped me off. There at the librarians desk was the same fox-woman I had seen before. I asked her for a book on being pregnant, and she nodded and led me into the shelves, and pulled a book entitled A Wolf Mothers Guide to Pregnancy.
Perfect. I thanked her for it, and checked it out. I went to one of the reading rooms and sat down to read, curling my tail around my hips as I sat in the chair.
Around me, little children, both mutant and uplifted animal, where playing with blocks or reading children's books. Right away, my maternal instincts came out: I wanted to play with them, to hold them, to... to nurse them and care for them.
I shook my head: I'd have one of my own soon enough, I reminded myself, unless I did something about it. But still, it was hard to shake the feeling that my body wanted a baby.
I was, after all, a woman now. And women nurture children instinctively....
I sighed and began to read. The book went through the stages of pregnancy with wonderful 3D illustrations, and even covered the symptoms of pregnancy. It seemed that morning sickness typically started at three weeks, if you got it at all, and could last through your entire pregnancy. Great, I thought, I have to throw up every morning....
I decided to get a bucket so I could sleep with it by my bed.
My breasts would grow, and in the last trimester I would start to lactate. I wondered what giving milk would feel like, and what it would be like to nurse a baby. Having my tits sucked sure was pleasant, would nursing be as well?
Hopefully, I thought, I wouldn't have to find out.
I was also supposed to get an aching back and feet once I got big, and get food cravings. Being pregnant would be decidedly uncomfortable.
Then, after nine months, I would go into labor for about twenty-four hours and give birth. Labor pains where described as sharp muscular cramps in your vagina. Twenty-four hours of them....
I closed the book, sighing.
Then a tall stag-man with broad antlers entered the reading room. He had no books, and none of the children where his. I wondered what he wanted here as he walked up to me, put out his hand, and introduced himself.
"I'm Mark", he said. "Are you the woman who owns the bubble car?"
I stared at him wondering how he had known. "I'm Samantha", I said, shaking his hand. "And yes, it's my bubble car."
"There is something we need to discuss, urgently", he said. "But not here."
"What is this about? And I in some kind of trouble with the TSA again?"
He smiled at that. "No trouble", he said. "But ears are everywhere in here. We should go outside to talk."
I looked up at the security camera in the room, realizing that the small boom on it must be a microphone. Intrigued, I nodded. "Let me turn in this book, and I'll be right with you."
So I turned in the book, and the stag-man and I walked outside to the benches in the small park in front of the library.
"It's safe to talk here", he told me.
"Okay, what going on? What do you want?", I asked.
"I'm with the Resistance", he said. "And I need your help."
I stared at him. "And you just come up to people and say that? What about Homeland Security?"
He smiled at me. "They don't exist out here, this far in the Forbidden Zone", he replied, "and I chose you because I know you don't like the government."
That was true. It was a racist dictatorship, from what I had seen, even enslaving the human population.
"And I know that you're pregnant, and you don't want to be", he added.
"How..." I sputtered, "how do you know these things?!"
"I'm a telepath", he told me with a smile. "I know a lot of things about you, Samantha. Or should I call you Sam?"
I stared at him. "You read my mind?!"
I sat there, shocked. How much did he know?
"I can help you with your problem", he said, "if you help me with mine."
I stared at him for a few seconds. He could get me an abortion?
I nodded. "What do you need me to do?"
"I need you take a retrieval team to the Moon and bring back an atomic bomb", he replied.
I sputtered. "You want me to steal a_nuke_ from the Moon?!", I exclaimed.
"Precisely", he continued. "It's located in an arsenal building in the ruins of a domed city on the Sea of Nectar. Do that, and the resistance will give you anything you want."
My mind spun. I could get an abortion, and meet with the Indianapolis Army of the Resistance, and figure out just what the hell was going on, and even talk to the other test subjects....
But what would Greg think?
He put his hand on my shoulder.
"I'll... have to ask my husband", I told him.
"No need to worry about that. Greg is kind-of anti-authority anyway", he told me. "To him, it will be an adventure."
I nodded. Greg had never struck me as a boot-licker, but I wondered what he would think about working for the resistance?
He handed me a piece of paper. "This is my address. Come meet me when you make up your mind", he said.
And with that, he left.
I waited in the park until Greg showed up, and we got in the van and headed home. We took out the groceries, and began making dinner. As we sat down to eat, I asked Greg: "If you could have anything, what would it be?"
He looked at me and smiled. "You", he said.
I sighed. "Other than me."
"Oh. Well, a nice house and a family, I guess. Maybe with someplace I could fish...."
I nodded. "I met with the Resistance today", I told him. "At the library."
He stared at me. "Really?"
So I told him about the telepathic stag-man I had met at the library.
"They want us to take them to the Moon in the bubble car. They promised us anything we wanted in exchange...."
Greg exhaled a big breath. "Are you serious? Go to the Moon?!"
I nodded again. "Yep."
He smiled at me. "That sounds like fun", he said. "They really offered us anything we desire?"
"Yep."
Then he looked down and frowned. "Just don't tell dad", he said. "He's a big fan of president Wallace."
Well, he didn't like me anyway, so I didn't care what he thought....
"I think a beach house in California would be nice", Greg said. "We could swim in the ocean, and go boating... it would be wonderful."
And just like that, Greg agreed to go.
"There's a few things I want to do first", I said. "I want the rest of those files, and I want to teach to your parents to drive so we can leave them the van. I don't think we'll be coming back to Riverside, except maybe to visit."
Greg nodded, and the next day we where at his parents house, giving them driving lessons. We told them we would be leaving them the van when we left, and we wanted them to have it. They where pretty happy with the idea, and agreed to pick it up from Greg's cabin in a week.
The next day we went back to the lab, and I printed out the last of the decrypted papers. But there was nothing more in them about Project Morpheus, the test subjects, or what had happened to the Indianapolis Army of the Resistance.
So that night, I tossed all the papers in the fire-place to cover our tracks, and the next morning we set out for the stag-man's house in Solarville.
Mark had a simple wooden house, wired for electricity and plumbing like all the homes in Solarville. He met us at the door. "Samantha, Greg, I'm glad you made it! Come in, come in!", he gestured us inside.
We sat down at his table, and he poured us some tea. "Let's talk business", I said.
"Okay, straight to the point", he smiled.
"We want a beach house in California, with all the amenities", said Greg.
And I want an abortion, I thought, knowing Mark could hear me.
Mark nodded. "That can be arranged", he said. "Now, let's talk about the mission."
We would be flying to a rebel base in Nebraska, deep in the Forbidden Zone, to meet with the rest of the team, be fitted for space suits, and get our gear, and then it was off to the Moon. There, we would follow a map and inertial compass which would lead us to an armory building. We would blow the doors, go in, and retrieve the nuke.
Greg did a double-take when when he heard we where going after a nuke, but other than that, it sounded simple enough.
Mark told us he would be going with us to Nebraska, to act as a liaison with the rebels there.
I told him we would pick him up in the bubble car tomorrow, about noon, and we left.
On the way back to the cabin, Greg looked at me and grinned. "I can't believe you set up a meeting with the Resistance!", he said, and kissed me.
I smiled back at him. "Why is that?"
"Oh, it's just that... I didn't know you had it in you, my lone-wolf ruin scavenger...."
I had to smile at that. Those where probably the words his father used to describe me....
The next morning, we packed our bags and took the van to Greg's parents house, then had them drive us back. We said our good-bye's, Ellen waving tearfully, and we got in the bubble car and headed for Mark's house.
Mark was sitting on his front porch, sipping tea.
He got out of the bubble car, and waved to him. He waved back, stood up, and said "I'll be out in a minute", and then went in. We waited for him on his front porch.
He came out wearing a backpack and a side-arm in a holster on his belt. "Ready?", he asked.
"Sure", I replied, and we got in the bubble car.
Inside, he leaned over my shoulder and said "I'll give you the landing coordinates, you just punch them in", and he recited the longitude and latitude to me as I entered them into the navigation panel.
The bubble car rose into the air at a fantastic rate, reaching the stratosphere in no time, and then took off for Nebraska at hyper-sonic speed. We cruised over fly-over country, the open fields of the abandoned mid-west covered with unstoppable super-wheat, past ruined cities and abandoned towns and roads, until we came to another city in Nebraska.
According to the navigation panel, it was Omaha. And it didn't look like it was in very good shape: the center of the city was a massive crater.
As the car started to land, it's radiation warning went off. But we where all uplifted animals, created to be radiation resistant, so I wasn't worried.
The car floated over an abandoned garage for heavy rigs, and down to ground level, then into one of the bays, and stopped. And that little display of maneuvering made me wonder how intelligent my car really was....
I opened the door, and we got out. "Hello!", shouted Mark, and then he got a far-away look on his face and said. "There here, I can sense their minds, we'll just have to wait a little...."
And so we waited.
