"I'm coming with you." Cassandra said with a gasp as she watched the paramedics rushing in and starting to work on the bat.
"Where are her parents?" One of the EMTs asked as the other one started getting her bagged. "And you can."
"Her mom and her brother are on the way home." She said panic starting to fill her voice as the adrenaline started disappearing.
"Do they know what's going on?" The other EMT asked as he started squeezing the bag, breathing for the bat.
"They know, her brother is the one that walked me through what to do." Cassandra said watching the flurry of movement, before watching them getting up and picking the stretcher up. "Come on and keep up."
The cat didn't say anything as she heard this, just nodding as she followed the two out of the room and to the elevator, pulling the door closed behind her. The ride in the elevator seemed to take three or four times as long as normal, but soon they made it to the bottom floor, and again in a flurry of movement they all shot out of the elevator and made for the ambulance that was parked out front.
The EMTs loaded the out cold bat into the back as the one went around to the driver side door and slipped in as the other got into the back and holding a hand out to help Cassandra in. Once she was in and the doors were closed she sat down and watched the EMT working to get the bat hooked up to different monitors and the like. The ambulance lurching to life and starting to speed off to the hospital.
Pacing the floor of the ER waiting room the cat would stop and look up to the clock, she kept doing this several times before she happened to see the the bat's mother and brother rushing through the door and up to her.
"Has there been any word on her yet?" Ruth asked walking up to Cassandra, taking her hands into her's.
"Not yet." She said softly, looking the mother in the eyes. "I'm.....I'm....Scared." Cassandra said as she suddenly threw her arms around the older bat, burying her face in her shoulder. "I don't want anything to happen to her.....she ....she means a lot to me." She said starting to sob openly.
"Ok." Chad said as he walked back up to the two. "It looks like they have her in a room, she is still out cold, but she is stable and everything." He said nodding. "They said that we can go up and wait with her and be there when she wakes up.
"Th....thank goodness." Cassandra said as she pulled her head from the mother bat's shoulder, smiling a little through the tears.
"Come on sweetie. I know that you want to be there for her, like I know that she wants you to be there when she wakes up." Ruth said smiling and patting the cat on the back.
The sight in the room was one that none of them were ready for, the sight of Erin hooked up to the many machines that kept her going. The sight of the daughter, the sister, the lover; laying there unconsciousness, breathing through the respirator, the beeping of the heart monitor that was announcing that her heart was working. The three knew that she was fighting for something. The mother knew her daughter would pull through and keep living and chasing her dreams; The brother knew his sister would make it, and be there to help him with something down the line, helping him up from his own fall; the lover knew that she would push through and show her just how much she loved her, how she planned on being there for her till the end and show her the depths of her heart.
"Ms.....Ms. Ruth....is.....is she going to be ok?" Cassandra asked, looking up to the mother bat, sharing the same look of fear, worry, and sadness.
Taking in a deep breath, she put her hand on the serval's shoulder and nodded. "I know my daughter.....she has been through some rough times in her life....I'm sure that this is just another stepping stone in her path." The mother said as she felt the serval pressing herself close to her, her arms coming up to wrap around her in a hug.
"She's right." Chad said as he put one hand on both of their shoulders. "She will shake this off like it was just a scraped knee." He said walking over to his sister's bedside, putting his hand on her's.
The family hunkered down for the day, taking turns sitting in the room with Erin, keeping a vigil on her, waiting and watching for any signs that she might be waking up, any little movement, anything. As the day drug on and there seemed to be no changes in the bat's condition, the truth and reality of the situation soon set in on them. Slowly as the doctors and the nurses would come in and take notes and make sure that everything was running smoothly.
The mother was the first to the realization. She knew that her daughter was strong, but in the back of her mind she knew that there might be some things out there that she couldn't overcome no matter how hard she tried. The worry that she might never get to speak to her daughter again, to hear her voice and be graced with her cheery outlook. This all spiraled down into darker thoughts and fears, the moment that the thought hit her, she burst out into tears and sobs. Her son and daughter's best friend rushing over to comfort her. She didn't want to tell them what thought had hit her, she didn't want to tell them that is had sunk in that she might have to lay one of her children to rest before she was lain down. It's a parent's greatest fear, and she was sure that the other's knew that was why she was sobbing.
It wasn't that long after the mother got up and excused herself, he knew that she was going down to the hospital chapel. He knew that she was going there to pray, talk to God and ask him to spare her child, knowing her, she would offer herself in place. The brother knew that there was a chance that Erin wouldn't make it through this, he hated his medical training for this reason, and for the fact that he couldn't do more for her. He hoped and prayed that she would make it through. He had been hit emotionally once this week and he really didn't think that he could stand to have to go through burying his sister. Like his mother, he got up and excused himself before making sure that the feline didn't need anything and didn't mind being left alone, once she managed to squeak out that she was ok, he made his way down to join his mother.
The only one that was left in the room with the bat was her lover. With shaking hands and tear filled eyes, she reached in and took Erin's hand and held it tight, feeling her cool flesh in the warmth of her paw. The serval's other paw reached up and brushed a stray strand of hair from the bat's face before softly stroking her cheek.
"Erin....." She whispered out. "I.....I hope that you can hear me...." She said holding her hand tighter. "I....I just wanted to tell you this.....just.....just." She took a deep breath, tears welling up in her eyes. "Just in case something happens...." She said, the tears starting to roll down her cheeks. "I.....I.....I love you." She whispered out, shaking as she fought back the sobs. "I love you....and I don't want anything to happen to you.....I don't want you to leave me....." She held the bat's hand up to her chest. "Come, you have to make it.....there are to many of us here for you to leave......we all love you to much for you to go." Cassandra sobbed out, clinging to the bat's paw like it was a life line. "Your mother......Your brother......me.....please." She continued to beg and plead for her to wake up, or just show her some kind of sign that she was ok, anything. "I mean, just think of all the things that we haven't done yet."
Cassandra didn't know how long that she had sat there talking to her lover, going from talking about the short time that they had known one another, to the things that they were going to do when she woke up, to begging and pleading with her to come back, asking her, God, or anyone that would listen to her. For just a moment she had laid her head on the side of Erin's bed and nodded off.
Cassandra wasn't sure how long she was there asleep with her lover's hand in her's. A paw came to rest on her shoulder, softly nudging her. "Sweetie....it's time to get up. The visiting hours are over and you need to go home." Ruth's voice came to the serval's ears. "I will take you home.....you can come back and see her tomorrow after you get some rest."
The serval looked up and shook her head. "I don't.....I don't want to leave her." She said, her voice shaky. "I want to be right here when she wakes up."
"I know you do." The mother bat said, "but you need to go home and get some rest, we don't want you to end up in a coma cause you worried yourself too much. I will make sure that just as soon as she wakes up that you will be the first one to find out." Ruth said smiling down at her, holding out a hand to help her up. "Now, lets get you home."
The ride home for the mother bat and the feline was a long one, filled with silence and sniffles, the only time that anyone really said something was when they were pointing out where to go, or just small talk. Soon the car pulled up to Cassandra's house, and after giving the mother bat her number, she slipped out and made her way to the house. It was clear that she was just as hurt, if not more so than the family.
"I thought that you were going to spend the snow day at Erin's" Olivia said as she turned and looked in time to see her daughter walking through the house, it took her a spile second to notice that something was wrong. "Oh sweetie." She said rushing over to her and wrapping her arms around her. "Did something happen? Did you two have a fight or something?"
"She......she....." The serval kitten mewled out as she clinged to her mother, holding tight as she looked up to her, tears in her eyes. "She accidently overdosed on her medicine and she is in the hospital knocked out." She said starting to sob.
"Oh sweetie." She whispered as she held her daughter tight, kissing her forehead. "Don't worry, I'm sure that she will be ok, I mean from what I read, the medical care here is quite good." Oliva said, trying to make it better for her daughter.
"I know mom, but......but I just worry about her.....there is something about her.....there is just something that scares me when I think about something happening to her." Cassandra said leaning back a little to wipe her eyes.
"It sounds like someone is in love." The mother cat said smiling. "Just remember to be strong for her.....I'm sure that she is fighting as hard as she can for you and her family. Now.....you look beat.....go get some rest." She said smiling warmly at her as she softly pushed her in the direction of her bedroom.
The next day was a blur to the kitten, the snow had fallen enough to close the school down for the day, but she knew that she had to go back the next day and she hated it. She had better things to do, like sitting by her lover's side, waiting for her to wake up. She rolled over in her bed and looked out the window, she knew that she would have to be getting up soon and that she should try to get a little sleep, closing her eyes she did her best to try and rest.
The day drug on in a jittery blur, making her way from class to class, fighting to stay awake and show some shred of attentiveness to the teacher and what the hell ever that they might be talking about at the moment, but it was so hard, her thoughts drifting right back to the bat that was sick. Soon the bell to signal the end of home room rang, she watched and waited as the others filed out of the room and out into the hallway. Once it was just her and a few more she got up and started making her way to the door to be stopped by one of the bullies that she had ran into a few days ago.
"Well would you look at that. The cat is here without the bat." A voice called out, causing Cassandra to stop dead and turn to see Robin standing there smiling. "Where is the bat? Did you fuck her into a coma?"
That last word was the thing that set the cat off, something inside of her, all of the built of emotion reaching a shattering point. Without thinking she took a step or two to close the distance between her and the badger before balling up a fist and swinging, hitting her right in the muzzle causing her to stagger back a step.
"You bitch." The badger hissed out, looking up to the slightly taller serval. "Did you and the bat bitch have a fight or something? Or is it just time of the month?"
"Erin is sick in the hospitle, knocked out." She said reaching down and grabbing the badger by the collar and jerking her up a little. "And I swear if you say something about her that I even think is just the slightest bit wrong I will fuck your world up." She said glaring down at her, pure anger tainting her voice. "I'm not going to let you stand here and talk about my best friend like that......"
"Girls!" A voice called out, the short beaver walking up to the two. "Cassandra.....I never thought that you would do something like this." He said shaking his head after having looked at the badger with the bloody nose. "And you, I'm pretty sure that you did something to start this.....I know you and your muzzle missy." He said shaking his head.
"You know what.....I don't need this today." Cassandra said letting go of the badger and turning to walk out of the room. "I'm going home....." She said, knowing that she wasn't going home, that she was going to go to the hospital to go back to waiting and praying that Erin would wake up. Before she could make it out of the building she felt her phone vibrating, looking down at the screen, she seen that she had a missed call from Ruth, she didn't even bother calling back, she just broke out into a sprint, heading to the hospital.
The serval burst through the doors of the school, knocking down a poor student or two as she did, she pushed her way through the crowds of kids that were making their way from one class to the next, hitting several of them, even hearing them calling, some of them threatening her and a few other things, she didn't care at all, she had something else that she had to do. She even rushed past a teacher or two, but again she didn't care, she had somewhere to be.
"Chad, sweetie are you sure about this?" Casey asked, looking across the table at the bat. "I mean, I know that you have a lot on your plate right now. with your sister and all that......We can wait and talk about this later when things are a little more.....settled." He said reaching out and putting his hand on his.
"I'm sure......I thought about this.....and well....I still love you." Chad said smiling and looking over to his boyfriend. "And.....I will love you no matter what.....if you want to be my boyfriend, I will love you.....if you want to be my girlfriend, I will love you all the same." He said taking and squeezing her hand.
"Chad....." She whispered as she squeezed her lover's hand. "That.....it....I....I love you." She said getting up and walking around the table, through her arms around the bat, hugging and planting a kiss on his cheek.
"Well.....it's like I said.....I love you know matter what.....I didn't fall in love with you for what you have in your pants......I fell in love with you....for you." Chad said smiling and looking down at her. "So.....Casey......will you be my girlfriend?" He asked smiling and getting up, still looking down at her.
"I will." She said smiling and nodding. "I will happily be your girlfriend."
"Oh....I have one more thing to ask you." Chad said smiling. "Casey, you have been with me through thick and thin for a long time now......" The bat said as he slowly got down on one knee, pulling a small box from his pocket. "Will you be my wife? Will you marry me? Will you let me come with you on your journey and accompany me on mine?"
"Ye......yes." The little mouse said, blushing and squeaking happily as she looked down at the ring sitting in the box. "I will." She said, blushing darker as she watched Chad taking the ring out of the case and slipping it onto her finger. "I.....I love you." She said throwing her arms around her soon to be husband.
"I love you to Squeaker.....I love you to." He said smiling and holding her tight, letting his hands rub her back slowly. "And between me and you.....you always did look a lot better in dresses and skirts." He said with a little snicker.
"Your a dick.....but I love you." Casey said smiling and kissing her lover.
"Sometimes..." He said letting go of her and standing up. "So....late lunch?" Chad asked smiling, opening his muzzle to say something, but the sound of his phone ringing stopped him. Looking down he saw that it was his mother. "It's mom......" He said rushing out the door answer the phone as he did, his newly engaged wife following behind him.
