The Upgraded Wolf: Chapter Four

Story by Tirran on SoFurry

Bright lights jolted the wolf awake. He groaned trying to turn his head way from the blinding white light. He discovered that his entire body, from the neck down was completely restrained. As his amber eyes slowly adjusted to the surgical lights ahead he could see that his body was in a large metal pod with pressure pushing on his body from all directions. His head had a greater degree of freedom than any previous procedure but with out the ability to turn his shoulders it was still rather limited.

As he looked around he saw several doctors in white laboratory coats moving about. As always the area beyond the surgery was dimmed making it impossible for him to put a face to the disembodied voices that filled his ears with a wide array of incomprehensible medical terms.

The wolf at least felt more rested and suspected that he had been unconscious for a longer period of time. He took a few deep breaths, trying to mentally prepare himself for the pain that would be coming. Tirran gulped as he heard a slow whine of a piston moving. Several more metallic parts could be heard clinking and shifting about the back of his head. To add to the psychological terror one of the white masked surgeons leaned over his head and looked down to him sternly, as if chastising him for his fear. The feline, he thought it was a feline at least, reached out to the sides of the wolf's head, beyond his range of sight.

The feline surgeon began adjusting the machinery, and the wolf could feel metal plates starting to push against the base of his skull and the very back of his jaw. The surgeon finished adjusting the metal plates and to top it all off took a leather strap and wrapped it around Tirran's forehead. The wolf's heart rate picked up noticeably afterwards, more so when he heard the feline flick a switch to the on position. The machine under his head started to come to life making a sort of pressurized whirr sound.

It took the wolf a moment to realize just what was happening to him. The metal plates slowly began to push on the very back of his jaw. Slowly, and methodically his mouth was unrepentantly forced open. Despite the wolf trying to close his mouth, his jaw simply moved according to the machine. His jaw continued to stretch open. The muscles ached with the strain and Tirran yelped as best he could, fearing that his jaw was going to be forced off of his skull. The feline surgeon looked away from his chart and back to the wolf. And with a slight "Hmmm..." He shut the machine off, leaving Tirran's jaw mechanically forced open.

The wolf's tongue lapped about in his maw as he tried to form words, but with out the ability to move his jaw he was as sensible as a drunkard. When his eyes saw the clamps the doctors would be using to remove his teeth everyone could understand his scream.

What was worse was that there was a second surgeon with another clamp. It seems that they were interested in speed this time. Tirran's face twitched and recoiled. He tried to pull back as much as he could but the machine forcing his jaw open was equally adept and keeping his head in place.

He felt the first clamp latch on to his upper left fang. The metal grips pulled and twisted on his tooth, slowly working it free from its grips. The pain initially wasn't that bad. It wasn't until the tooth was jarred free that the rush of pain began. He howled out as it felt like some one was jabbing a sharp pin into the spot where his tooth was. His howl wasn't even finished before the second surgeon was in the wolf's maw, clamping down on the other fang.

The wolf growled trying to resist but his body was completely immobilized far more than any previous operation. His muscles spazimed and jerked inside of their restraints but that was it for his motions. The only thing he could move about effectively was his tongue.

Tirran yelped out as the next fang was pulled out, and its pain added to that of the original missing tooth. The pain was maddening and the cavities caused by his missing teeth were starting to leak blood. He could feel, and taste the crimson drops falling on to his tongue.

Quickly, the first doctor was back in with his clamp going after yet another tooth. The wolf's face tightened as he did what he could to pull back. It was to no avail as yet a third tooth was ripped out of its socket. The blood flowed more freely now and the pain was starting to become exhausting. The forth tooth seemed to be taking longer and a sudden sharp pain jolted Tirran out of what ever thought he was having.

"Damnit... this one shattered." The doctor said angrily. He reached back over and took out a small set of pliers and reached into the wolf's mouth and slowly began to remove each fragment of the broken tooth, indifferent to the extreme pain that it caused his patient.

Tirran whimpered and whined as tears rolled down the sides of his face. The pain gnawed at the back of his consciousness, wringing every action and slowly grinding down on him. He didn't realize he had so many teeth, or that it would hurt so much to have them removed.

There was another loud crack and that jarring pain that jolted through his mouth. "Damn, are we ever going to get a patient with decent teeth?" he heard one of the surgeons say. The pain was unbearable, and he could hardly focus. His body started to relax, no longer able to tolerate such high levels of pain.

The wolf was awoken by a sharp electrical jolt running through his body. His bloodshot eyes flared open and he looked around. There weren't any surgeons immediately over him trying to pull his teeth out but he was still in the same position. He couldn't feel his mouth any more; the pain had numbed the whole region of his face. There were tubes running out of his mouth and they made a slurping suction sound. It was his blood, he realized that they were suctioning out of his mouth.

"And just how long was he out? Do you realize how much of our data is invalidated now? You have a simple job, keep him awake!" boomed one disembodied voice.

"Sir, he was fading in and out the whole time, it was too much for him at once. We're pushing him too much." came another voice, this one sounded like a surgeon.

The wolf groaned softly, he felt light headed and exhausted. He couldn't pant, or move. His muscled ached and burned all over and his face tingled in ways he had never experienced before.

"Each case is unique, we need to establish a baseline tolerance to compare against field work." came yet another voice. This one was feline and familiar, though he couldn't place it.

"Well, he's awake now, is there any reason we're not proceeding then? We've been behind schedule this whole time, and now thanks to all the teeth you've shattered it'll take even longer to get them molded." spoke the loud, authoritative voice.

"No, no, we're getting the drills and the wires, the equipment is on its way and we'll be able to proceed. Ahh... will we be doing the ocular modifications?" asked the surgeon. That opened up a whole set of heated questions. It would be a half hour later before the question was finally answered.

Tirran groaned and noticed that there were several other doctors moving about. One of them had a large metal object shaped like half an oval with a grooved pit along the edge. He didn't fully understand until they started to lower it into his mouth. Once it was in place the doctor began to ease up on the jaw clamp letting the wolf close his mouth. Only now, his jaw muscles ached so much he no longer really wanted to. The doctor seemed to under stand and pushed on the wolf's jaw. The wolf's jaw suddenly snapped down on the metal retainer. The metal grooves went around his gums keeping them from closing down completely, and isolating the gum lines from everything else. His jaw burned with lactic acid in the muscles which tried to close up now. He was stuck with lockjaw and the metal retainer keeping him from biting down all the way.

The same doctor came back with two small tubes. The tips glistened and the wolf's amber eyes tracked them diligently. The doctor moved up to the wolf's nostrils and inserted one of the tubes into each opening. The wolf wanted to squirm. The tubes were slimy and felt so alien. His face wrinkled up and even that hurt.

He looked up again, and the doctor had another set of tubes. Like the last they were the clear medical kind only that these had a bit of a flared and a thinner end to them and were much larger. He couldn't figure out where they were going to go. The doctor continued to move them over the wolf's face and held one up over the wolf's eye.

Two fingers pulled his eyelids apart and the slimy tube started to come down around the wolf's eyeball. His strained vocal chords started to scream out. His words muffled by the metal retainer. His vision was gone in the left side. He couldn't track anything nearly as well and even that was lost as the other tube was forced in around the wolf's other eye.

His view of everything was like looking through frosted glass and he felt the tube rubbing back as he tried to look around. His eyelids tried to close. He tried to shut out the tubes feeling that this would finally be the end of him. But the tubes didn't give and he could only wonder what the new whirring sound was.

He felt something suddenly drilling into the side of his muzzle. The steel bit went through the muscle and straight into the bone. He twitched in the pain, unavoidable in its severity. He felt the drill bit stay in his muzzle and slowly tug on his face. It made it all the more horrifying now that he couldn't see what was happening. He felt the drill come in on the other side of his face at the exact other side of the first drill. The drill bored in through his fur and flesh, and like the first, drove into the bone.

Alec felt sick to his stomach, and the pills he had taken to help control his urge to vomit weren't helping like he expected. He and his boss were on the operating floor and just finishing berating one of the doctors for failing to follow protocol. Alec wasn't paying attention to the large reptile's words. His eyes were transfixed on the suffering wolf as they drilled into him and secured his muscles. The delicate facial skinning required that his muscles be immobilized. The drill went into him several more times, securing the face muscles completely, leaving the drill bits into him and then tied down with small metal wires. The scene reminded him of a part in the book Gulliver's Travels.

He continued to watch as the doctors began to use small more delicate scalpels to remove the facial fur in small sections of only a few square inches at a time. Each strip was set aside in a metal pan that would eventually go of to another specialist much like the teeth and claws. Like the teeth and claws, the wolf's fur was going to be replaced with a technologically superior version. It left the tiger executive wondering what happened to the original fur of all the patients they processed through out the project. He knew to a certain extent they were studied and processed, but he had never seen a destroy order like the claws and teeth eventually got. Admittedly he was aware that he wasn't seeing the whole picture. He didn't have the clearance.

There was a grunt from the large reptile and it signified that it was time to go. Alec turned and fell in behind the senior executive as they walked out, leaving the team of professional surgeons to their grisly work.

Tirran was conscious, though he couldn't quite prove it. He knew that much. He knew that the rest of his fur was stripped off of his head. It felt, and sounded like they took his ears right off. He couldn't hear anything at all as he strained to know what he fate would be. Everything was a distorted sound, like he was underwater. That wasn't the case as he felt the strange tingling sensation over his head that the rest of his body had to endure.

The drills were still lodged firmly into his skull keeping him firmly in place. He tried to swallow and gulp, but that was a strain and nearly impossible. Latex covered fingers probed over his jaw and he felt a needle sewing over and through his flesh. They were integrating something on to each side of his jaw, it felt like a cloth but he didn't know. He could barely feel anything any more and wasn't sure he wanted to.

The next sensation came on the top of his head, where he though his ears would be. Tiny little wires were pushed into his flesh, and he wanted to squirm as he felt something push past the muscles and to the skull itself, seemingly into the wolf's head entirely.

The little wired probes wormed about inside of his skull, and his hearing returned in bits and strange pitches. Like some one put a funnel up to his ear and was moving it around while they talked to him. Finally they finished and he felt another wire probe getting pushed into his skull, this one felt like it was attached to a another set of wires arranged in a miniature chain link arrangement.

He felt the flesh on the top of his head continue to be molded and shifted about. Finally he was left with the feeling of something like a strong plant like material pushing against his head to holding the changes in place.

The ocular tubes shifted some and he felt small hooks pull on the thing flaps of flesh that used to be his eyelids. A metal probe of some kind snaked behind his eyeball and pushed at the nerve endings deep inside of his ocular cavity. He saw flashes of strange and incomprehensible images. He didn't know if it was caused by the probe, or if he was even feeling it, and that he had simply gone insane.

Next the wolf felt an intrusion into the base of his skull. Sharp blades worked about inside of his neck muscles. There was a brief moment of euphoria, when his body felt like he could move and float easily, and then a brief moment of ever nerve ending in his body surging and screaming in pain. The sensations continued to alternate about from extremes with the odd sensation of a metal knife in his neck working as a grim transition between the two .

A small needle came into the edge of his lower lip, near where the lower and upper lip met. The needle pulled a squishy thread through his lower lip and continued on up his mouth. The needle continued to tightly sew his lips together, leaving the metal retainer inside of his maw. The numbing sensation was there, and he simply felt the physical effects of the needle working from one side of his face to the other.

The ocular tubes started to shift. Slowly, delicately they began to retract out of his eyes. He still couldn't see properly once they were removed. Things were a haze and a blur, but at least the wolf could now make out shapes and figures. There wasn't any time for the shapes to come into focus. The needle besieged his eyelids next. The flaps of flesh were pulled up and then the needle worked through them with deft skill and speed. One eye was sewn up and then the other, leaving him blind and deaf.

He now breathed in and out through the small tubes in his nostrils. He took a moment of resignation went he felt the tubes pull out of his snout expecting the doctors to sew them closed as well, ending his life. He slowly, hesitantly, but with increasing acceptance began to face his demise.

Only his demise didn't occur, two short tubes were pushed into his nostrils. They were a stronger plastic, and pushed his nostrils open wider than before. He could breath through his snout much easier now and the rush of air was invigorating.

He felt a slight sting as the black coating was painted on to his head. The doctors, diligent in making sure that he was completely coated, went over his sealed eyes and mouth. They were more delicate around his snout and ears but thorough all the same.

Left with time to think as the coating dried and constricted about his skull and merge seamlessly with the rest of the coating on his body, the wolf took several deep breaths through his snout. He felt increasingly tired, finally being allowed to relax. The restraints about his body started to loosen and his muscles moved slightly as his body shifted. The last thought he had before he slipped into a deep exhaustive sleep was the sensation he was being moved.

Alec sighed a sigh of relief. The initial work was done. The wolf was coated now and the rest of the work was going to go much easier now. The tiger executive walked into his makeshift room and closed the door behind him. It had been a long day. If day was the proper word. He had no clue how long he'd actually been awake, only that it was much longer than he was used to.

The tiger groaned a bit as he undid his tie setting the red cloth up on a hanger and then leaned over to untie his shoes. He took another deep breath, letting it out slowly. He expected his boss, the ominous reptile to leave now that the trickiest part of the program was over. How ever he knew that the reptile had taken a vested interest in the wolf and he some how felt that the senior executive would stick around for the rest of the program. Alex didn't want to have to be standing in his shadow for the next several months as the wolf was reprogrammed.

Reprogramming could take weeks or months. Even then there was no guarantee that the new programming took place. The physical modifications were easy in a sense, measureable and predictable, yet the psychological modification was a wildcard, widely dependant on the subject themselves and the lives they lead before hand. Most of them didn't' remember their former self, some did, and some became insane and could never be brought back under control. Those cases were always the most disappointing. They would have to be killed which was always a challenge after the modification, given their new abilities. Then their bodies would be harvested for what parts could be recycled while the rest were incinerated.

Alec sighed a bit and adjusted his tie once more as he looked into his reflection in a pane of glass. Satisfied for the time being he glanced over his shoulder in the direction of the wolf's containment room. Soon the real changes would begin.
