What's it like owning a pet fox? Or ever wonder about getting one?
As a fox breeder like myself, i want to share my thoughts on anyone who wants to get or is thinking about owning a pet fox. Now yes what you see in youtube videos of foxes just trashing your home can happen if you allow it! I want to share my tips on, what it's like owning a pet fox.1. The most ask thing "Do they bite?" well yes and no lol, foxes tend to play bite, but it's not hard and you don't even feel it.2.Are foxes hard to train? Like a dog or cat, with foxes it takes time to train, if you buy one at a young age, but remember at the end of the day they are still a wild animal so the training may take a bit longer than a dog or cat, but it's worth it!3.Do foxes wreck your home and tear things up? again yes and no.Foxes are still a wild animal and need to be outdoors, so building a cage in your backyard is the best thing! unless you train your fox in such a way, it can live indoors and doesn't tear things up, my very first Pet fox, RedTail she lived indoors and never cared for the outside. But i trained her from six months old to become an indoor fox, and i got her a litter box (like what cats use) and she was trained to "do her business" in there. I also trained her to sleep in my bed with me. She never tore up anything. But that's up to you, if your willing to have your pet fox be like a dog or cat. If not the cage outside is your best idea, foxes love to run around and play, they love digging holes but that also means dig deep when your putting up the fence in cage because they may try to dig and go under it,they love hiding under anything they can find so try and buy them a dog house that you can put in the cage! Again with my old pet fox, RedTail didn't care for the outdoors as i said before. But like RedTail if your willing too, you can put a harness on your fox and take them for walks!! That's what i use to do, RedTail seem to like that better! But never take them off the harness. Not because they would run away, but more from other people who may scare them. Foxes are a shy animal.4. What do pet foxes eat? Do not give them kibble or grains! raw meat, veggies and fruits are all good for them.5. Can you play with your pet fox in the same way you would a dog or cat? For sure!!! foxes love being played with and everything to them as a game!! you can play ball with them for hours! foxes will cuddle up to you when they feel tired. 6.Is finding a vet easy? first check with your local vet first to see if they are willing to take care of your fox if needed. So before buying a pet fox check and make sure there is a veterinarian willing to look after one.7.Is it safe to own a pet fox, when i also already have other animals? I would not recommend it.Dogs and foxes do not get along at all.8.Are foxes loud? they can be, but only when they are happy to see you!! they will scream out
in excitement. So make sure your neighbors don't mind lol.9.Check local laws.pet foxes are illegal in many places. Where they are allowed, foxes are considered exotic pets and may require a license. Make sure to obtain one before you purchase or adopt a fox.10. After all that why would you should get a pet fox? foxes are the best pet you can find! Foxes get a bad rep but they comes from people who don't understand them or, feel foxes shouldn't be pets but stay as wild animals. Someday foxes may even replace the dog as "man's bestfriend" it's a lot of work owning a pet fox, but if your willing to take the step, a pet fox is waiting for you! If you have any questions please feel free to ask.
