Chapter 2
The wild wastes...
It has been 5 hours of driving now and nothing even remotely resembling civilisation. A few wrecked buildings but nothing worth staying in. campingisn't an option because I saw a few bandit camps here and there. The wildlife isn't much better so far I've seen a few big hulking shadows, ferals, wolfs, rolcers, and even a death hunter no way we're stopping here. Kai is sleeping her hands are locked round my waist. Her soft cheek is on the back of my neck. Her warm breath makes the difference to the cold air. If I don't find a place to stop soon I'm goanna fall asleep but all I can see is. 3 meters thanks to my bike light. The night is not a safe place to be in the wastes.
Another hour has passed still no hostel, hotel or even a half burned down house because that would really help. My luck, up ahead is a motel although the lot looks pretty packed and the motel itself is kinda rundown. Giving into tiredness I wake kai up at first she is a little startled asking where she is but calms down. I tell her that we're staying in the building up ahead. At first she complains about it so I ask her if she knows how to drive a bike. Her silence is confirming that she doesn't. With that I pull into the parking lot to find a place to park. As we roll though the place we can see that there are still people out mainly bikers and hookers but a couple of survivors and fellow bounty hunters though I doubt that they would be that friendly. The Place is split up on the left is what I assume is the main registration and on the right is the rooms, this building unlike its counterpart is panted in a flaky pink paint and the whole building is surrounded with a small stone wall. I find a space to park my bike kai gets off and has a small look around. As I chain my bike to the rails I notice I'm not the only one with a bike but the odd thing is that all the others look the same not exactly but the same stickers. A globe with a skull and cross bones. What I've seen that before it's the... kai shouts me over from the grey concrete building on the left she's leaning out the door "star get your but over here and get us a roooooom I'm tired and I don't know what to say to them and" she walks out of the door and walks over to me avoiding all the bikers and hookers which give her funny looks as she passes by. One of the bikers a huge pigman tries to reach out and grope her ass. Lucky for him he drunkenly falls off his bike and passes out on the tar mat. As she gets closer a big dogman like me steps in front of her and puts his arm around her. Kai is mushed under his arm as he grabs her chin "well well lookie lookie what we have here. Haven't seen you before. You new here or somethin case if you are let me have the pleaser to brake YOU IN" kai is panicking struggling to get free, tears forming in her eyes. I shove the guy he whips round to stare me straight in the eyes. He's the same size as me with brown fur but his facial features are more dog like. He smells of drugs and alcohol his face is full of scars when he speaks I can see the wrought in his teeth his breath is the worst thing I've smelt in a long time "well I thought I smelled a wolf here sorry friend but this one's mine" my eyes turn red. Some of his friends panic but not him he keeps cool. He lets go of kai and says "fine have her there is plenty of meat here anyway" he says pushing kai to me as he walks off to harass someone else with his bad breath. Kai hugging into me rubbing her head into my chest. I don't hug her back though I put my hand on her head and stroke her to try and calm her down then I tell her "stay close to me ok I won't be able to fight all of them ok" rubbing her head into my T-shirt she nods. We walk carefully passed the bikers kai is under my arm and go into the grey building.
I walk into the place its warm and nicely furnished. I turn to kai and ask "what were you about to say" she point to the desk at the far end of the room "they are creepy" I look at the desk more and I see 2 catmorths Siamese catmorths. Both of them are filing they're nails in perfect sink. I can't tell if they are male or female because there is no exact features to tell them apart both are wearing black tops with white ties the table covers they're bottom halves so I can't tell if they are wearing trousers or skirts "Hello Mr star" wow they were talking in perfect sink it sounded like an echo "your concubine has told us you would like a room am I correct" ok that is uber creepy now I know what kai was talking about "yes we would like a room and she is not my concubine! We would like a room with a bed each no double ok" I look at the cat on the right for answers I stare into its deep blue eyes and nearly get caught in a day dream but the cats keep talking "sorry Mr star we did not know we only assumed. Would you and your girlfriend like the lovers' suite" ok now they are annoying me "no I would like the room with 2 beds please" they lean back in their chairs and look at each other as if deciding the best was to piss me off more "ok sir we do not have any more rooms like that' I'm afraid that the only rooms we have left are the lovers' suite, 2 separate rooms at either end of the motel or a double bed room take your pick Mr star" well this is a tough choice "well take the separate rooms" kai tugs my arm and looks up at me with pled "star you can't please take the double room" the two cats light up as if they had won the lottery leaning over their desk to see how this will play out. My attention is brought back to kai who tilts her head at me. I can feel myself blushing at her request "why-why would you want that?" kai doesn't seem to notice my embarrassment but the 2 cats do and giggle to them self's. Kai shots them a confused look and they quickly regain their plane expressions. Kai then looks at me "well I'm sure there are more guys out in the parking lot who could break into my room and I would be defenceless so I was wondering if we could sleep in the same room but I'll sleep on the floor... ok" oh she just wants to sleep in the same room well I guess that's ok well sure why not. I put my hand on the credit scanner and it withdraws the amount that is needed "we'll take the double bedded room" they fish under their desk for a minute and one of them brings its paw up with the key a rusted old key with a large fish key chain and hands it to me "we hope you enjoy your stay Mr star and... friend" they give me one last creepy look before we walk away. We are room 34 at the end of the motel on the top level and its right beside the dog biker... grate just perfect as. We walk up the iron stairs and pass by the biker. Kai turns her head to make sure he's not following us when he blows her a sarcastic kiss. God I'm not joking he has wafted his fowl breath this way and god it smells like shit the sooner we get in the room the better. I quickly open the door it wasn't even locked it was just open and when I opened the door we were hit by a blast of heat and a pungent smell that makes me take a step back. Kai has her sleeping bag in her pack and she is taking it out but when I turn on the light we are welcomed to a stained floor peeling walls and a few rats and cockroaches that run as the light slowly flickered on. Kai is in a moment of near ' freak the fuck out' and the thing that comes after that is a scream that nearly brakes the glass window " AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH STAR I CAN NOT SLEEP ON THAT... THAT FLOOR . I don't even want to imagine what some of those stains are" that is true I mean look at that green over there or that pink one over there or... what am I standing in... ok that blue one there. "I see what you're talking about this floor isn't even fit for a pigman. Hold on let me take off my feet wraps" kai looks befuddled as I take off the hard leather wraps around my paws "wait you have wraps? Why not just shoes? You know normal shoes?" I stop unwrapping to look at her "well kai I'm gonna take a guess and say your dad was human correct?" kai looks a bit surprised "how'd you know?" I start to unwrap my feet fully "well you have a human mouth you are full of fur and you have human feet and a tail so your mother was cat and your dad was a half breed. So that makes you" when I finish I look up at kai she seems astounded by my observation and sits beside me on the bed still awestruck. I begin to unravel my next paw. Only to find kai has already started "so you have paws what's that about?" huh she doesn't get how this whole mutt, purebreed thing works. Well best to tell her
"Look! You are what people would call a half breed I'm what they would call a pure bread ok?" she blinks idly at me. I cannot be bothered to explain this to her it's such a simple concept right? But her face begins to change. She looks up to ponder it then says "ooooooh now I get it. Sort of" well that's a start but I'm too tired to explain everything to her. I take a quick look around the room and notice that the only half decent thing in this whole room is the bed. Surprisingly they hit everything else in this room with spuge except the bed. Well lucky us "hay kai turn off the light we need to leave early tomorrow if we're going to get o Atlantis on time" kai starts to undress and take off her clothes. I turn away and hope that she will put something on but she doesn't and hops into bed and under the covers. I take a quick glance at her to make sure she is at least wearing something which she is a vest and panties. Well it betr! Wait why is she in the bed she supposed to be on the floor "errr kai why are you not on the floor I get that's its dirty but you should be fine in your sleeping bag?" kai looks at me with angry glare "I'm not sleeping on that floor there is rats on it" a cat scared of rats that's interesting but fine "fine but you keep to your side of the bed and I'll keep to mine" then she gives me a pouty look "but what if I get cold in the night?" I swear she's just trying to make me crazy now "I don't know... fine but don't try anything!" kai raises an eyebrow "well usually it's the shy girl who says that. Not the big strong manly mercury haha" I roll my eyes and lie down "just shut up and go to sleep ok if you're going to snuggle over to me and puts her head on my shoulder. Well at least I can finely get some sleep but the loud shouting and the occasional gunshot dose wake me up a bit. Another thing that's keeping me awake is kai who is staring at me with those bright pink eyes. She is looking up at me from my shoulder. I tilt my head down so she knows I'm awake too "can't sleep ether?" she nods *bang* another gunshot she snuggles into me even more than she has. On the verge of crying in one of the world's worst motels and in bed with a complete stranger. But not doing anything no no no. hearing kai's sobbing reminds me what the problem is so... I put my arms around her. It seems to work when nothing else does. Which it does her breathing and hart beat slows down until she drifts off to sleep now finally I can get some rest.
As I slowly fall asleep I get an odd sense of actually. Falling it's not till I wake up that I realise that I am slowly falling through clouds in a bright place. Suddenly it's as if gravity has sifted and I'm on my feet standing on a black and white checked platform. As I look up I see the platform I see a gate it looks like the parley gate no saint peter just a vine covered gate. It looks so familiar. Am I dead is this haven and if so why does it feel like I've been here before. Oh now I know where I am why does she need me now haven't I been doing my best what more does she want from me. I slowly Approach the gate knowing what horror and torcher can await me though this door way. I put my hand on the gate and the vines tenderly rap around my hand as I take a deep breath and push the gate open. I expect to be hit or whipped but instead of miss pain I see *sniff* I catch a tear rolling down my cheek. I see Eden a tree nymph, she's tending her flowers, and her glowing eyes are a reddish pink colour. The plants in her garden represent her children the ones she's tending now are mine dog rose she used to tease me about it when I was younger. She stops what she was doing to look at me "ahhh star my favourite lost childe come give mama a hug" I run over to her and I kneel down to hug her and I end up picking her up and bear hugging her even though I have enough strength to crush a rock she seems to be unfazed by it. As I put her down she puts her soft wooden hands on my cheeks and wipes away the tears and in a voice that could melt steel says "star we need to talk an important subject has appeared and I need every child's help come back...come back...come back...comeback" as I'm slowly pulled away dragged thorough her garden back to the gate. And I'm locked out I'm back to where I was 10 minutes ago. I start to bang on the gate kick it punch it slam into it but every time I dent it the vines bend it back into place. I feel like I want to scream, I'm going to, I'm going to scream
" AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" I wake to find kai in the corner looking at me in fear shaking and a claw mark along the left side of her chest and a small blotch staining her vest. The only way I can see her is the red glow that's lighting up that side of the room. Look behind me to check that what's making the light then when I look at the wall the light has followed my gaze when I realise it's me. I don't feel it but I'm sweating and panting. The light is from my eyes, I jump out of bed and go for the mirror. Kai screams in terror and runs into the bath room locking the door and putting something in front of it as I hear the screeching of something being dragged across the floor. I'll deal with that in a bit but first I need to see it this one time. As I stare into the mirror I see a demon an abomination whenever a child is called they suffer from panic attacks or even seizures. Thank god I've never had a seizure but what I'm having is a panic attack. I'm calm now though so that's good. Usually when I'm mad only my irises turn red now both my eyes are fully red but that begins to fade. I walk to the bathroom door and I knock "kai can I talk to you please? We need to talk about what happened" I wait for a minuet with no response. I knock again with no response. Oh crap she must have climbed out the window with that I kick the door down. A bit extreme I know *crash* the small table that was supposed to be blocking the door skids across the floor. I was expecting an open window instead I see kai half in half out of a busted air vent kicking trying to get away she's throwing a fit of crying and screaming. Oh god what have I done I've terrified the poor girl. I'm not sure what I'm meant to do I don't think there is a way to calm her down but I'll try anyway. I tap her on her leg then it makes her freak out even more trying to kick where I just was. I'll wait and see how she is. I'm not good with these types of problems usually if a witness sees me it's a simple mater shutting that person up.
10 minutes have passed kai has given up trying to escape instead just hangs there on the wall with her butt hanging out but as soon as I grab her and start to pull her out she eminently starts to kick again. When I finally pull her out of the vent she tries to run away but I stop her and pull her down I kneel to look her strait in the eyes when she looks up at me at can see that tears have stained the fur on her cheeks. I give kai a minute to settle down before talking to her "kai look I'm gonna..." god I sound like a broken record "kai I had a dream. Well a message and my kind not wolfmorth but something else "the lost children" we have been called back our memory of where it is back and we have to return" kai tilts her head "what is "the lost children" star" I look at her. She has changed from scared, angry to a curios look and somewhere in the mix of emotions empathy? I regain my serious look at kai but is soon abandoned by the thought of what she's been through tonight but she does deserve to know of what she could have got into "it's a group of the best mercenary's and assassins. We all serve the tree mother, a nimf that looks after orphans and trains them. But the only way she contacts them is through a telepathic link when we sleep thee side effect of this of this is that we freak out afterwards... I'm sorry you had to see that I'll take you back to Catarina tomorrow" I'm getting up to leave when kai grabs my hand. I look down at her on the floor, her face is looking downward but she sounds angry "you think I can just go back I sold everything I had to come with you and now... you just want to get rid of me..." well when she puts it like that "ohhh no not just because of some stupid dream" kai looks up at me with what I assume is a cross face. She hops up dusts herself off from being in the air vent "so do you have any bandages or am I gonna have to pay for that too" I chuckle at her snide remake
After the bandages kai keeps looking at me as if I'm going to go crazy again "you ok kai" she nods frantically. Then I think something over, something off topic to try and redeem the last part of friendship she thinks we might have "kai kai... kai" as if I'm trying to taste the word. Kai gives me a puzzled look then tilts her head "kai... doesn't sound like a girl's name what is your full name?" kai's shocked but answers "my full name is Kiara" Kiara that's a pretty name "Kiara that's a great name why use kai"
She shrinks back rubbing her arm "it a long... story *yawn* I need to get some sleep ok" I nod to her and get into bed. I think that I should have told her what the whole attack thing was about but its too late to bring it up now. I turn away from her, I don't want to see a face of worry, god I screwed up this time. I hope that that cut won't scar. As I drift in and out of sleep I feel something slip across my stomach expecting a rat I nudge back only to bump into kai "its ok... I'm not scared" and with that I fall into a dreamless sleep but I don't take that as a bad thing. I sleep in the knowledge that someone trusts me even though I attacked them. It's comforting peaceful even but I'm not fully asleep I'm still haunted by what has just happened...
And what will happen tomorrow at... EDENS GARDEN
