Background Information 4: Outside

Not a major player in Selected Universe politics, the Outside is nevertheless a factor that needs to be taken into account. As the name suggests, the Outside is composed of the regions of space that extend outside the boundaries of the SU, and is populated by beings that otherwise do not fit into the general cosmic milieu.
There are several species known to inhabit the Outside, and to have dealings with the races of the SU. Perhaps the most peaceful of these races are the asari, an alien race composed entirely of blue-skinned females. Less peaceful, but not necessarily hostile, are the krogan, the kig-yar, and the sangheili, all of whom regularly offer their services as mercenaries after the recent dissolution of their formerly great cosmic realm, known as the Covenant, due to internal strife. An extremely dangerous species, believed to be nonintelligent, but nevertheless lethal when encountered, are the xenomorphs, which are mostly found only on planets in the Outside, but have been known to migrate into the SU via ships passing through sectors of space infested with the deadly creatures. One race known to deliberately transport the xenomorphs, the yautja, have also been known to travel from Outside into the SU, apparently carrying on ritualistic hunts, especially against intelligent lifeforms. The yautja are dangerous opponents, and their stealth technology is far in advance of those of any other race, while their physical capabilities make them truly formidable adversaries.
As might be expected, not much is really known about the government of Outside. The asari make occasional mention of a Citadel Council when they seek trade relations, and there are of course references by the yig-kar and sangheili to their fallen Covenant, but overall there doesn't seem to be much real organization Outside. Whatever might exist out there, the SU has not been approached by official representatives of any Outside government, nor have the SU's members met any serious military threats from Outside, and so the region is considered primarily a curiosity and site for future exploration and expansion.
Besides the occasional diplomats from the asari and a few other miscellaneous races, and the numerous mercenary forces, not much else is known about either the government or the military of Outside. There is apparently some seriously powerful technology available to these races, some of it even exceeding the technology of the SU, and there are whispered rumors of precursor races with high technology artifacts that border on magical in their abilities. As far as is known, however, the races of the Outside are too disorganized or too scattered to properly field any significant military force with the technology they have, which keeps a reasonable peace with the rest of the universe possible, despite some minor outliers (especially the yautja).
Outside accepts a variety of series that don't fit with the general "furry" theme of the UFC series, but which are still much-beloved, and could stand to be included for the fun of it. Also, because this author has a serious weakness for naked yautja, male or female. Series found Outside include:
