A Slice Of Lex Ch. 3
By Jenny Harlow
Lexi woke up earlier in the morning than she normally would, she usually does when spending the night at Victoria's. This morning however, it was different, there was an extremely sharp pain in her right side. She lay in bed for a moment, playing the game of what's hurting and why? She lie there, assessing herself for a moment. She sat up in the bed, as soon as she did she let loose an accidental puddle of urine. "Oh shit." She said, pulling the blankets down. To be honest, in three years of dating Victoria the two had mutually experienced worse accidents. Lexi attempted to get out of the bed, while holding what was left in her bladder. The bathroom of of Victoria's room had a shower built in it, and the room was full of warm steam.
Victoria slid the curtain open a little, "Oh, did you come to join me?" She teased, "I just started, so I'll be in here for a good while." Lex ran to the toilet instead, quickly throwing the lid open and sitting on it.
"Maybe in a moment, I could use some cleaning up... As a small side matter so could your bed." Lex said, hissing as she attempted to start a stream, "I'm really sorry. I think I'm trying to pass a stone. The past few times that's happened I've had a lot of trouble with full bladders in the morning."
"It's alright... I'm sorry gal-o-mine." Victoria said, still holding the gap in the curtain. "Finish up there and come join me, I'll rub your back while you're under the warm water." This had helped in the past, Lex being annoyingly prone to kidney stones and UTIs.
After a while of attempting, Lex finally managed to pass a small stone, hearing it land with a gentle splash in the water below. The relieving stream followed after, allowing her full bladder to finally empty itself. Yet the pain in her side still persisted. "Great, there's probably more waiting for later." She stood slowly, the pain in her side stabbing again with each movement. She stood in the shower, back facing towards Victoria. "I know it might be hard to get up after, but sit down, it'll be a whole lot more comfortable now.
Without arguing the wolf sat on the bottom of the tub, curling her legs up and leaning forward. Victoria sat down behind her, putting her legs on either side of Lexi. She held the shower head in her left hand, while gently rubbing Lex's side with the other. "That feels really good... Thanks babe..." The wolf said, leaning forward. Letting the vixen have more easy access to the sore areas. She let out a quiet whimper when Victoria hit a particularly sore spot. Lex unintentionally peed again, her bladder not willing to build up to full again at this moment.
"Lex you're bleeding!" Victoria said, looking over her shoulder concerned.
"That happens, it will stop on its own in a moment." She said, dealing with kidney stones throughout her teenage life.
The shower lasted almost until the warm water ran out, with Victoria mostly focusing on making her mate comfortable, and getting her cleaned up after earlier. "You stay in here with your towel on you, try not to get chilled. I'll get my mom to grab a towel to soak up any wetness while I deal with the covers on the bed." Victoria kissed Lex on the ear, causing it to flick gently. "Also, I'm gonna grab the thermometer... It could just be the shower but you're feeling warm young lady."
"I'm two months older than you," Lex said, leaning miserably against the back of the tub.
"Does not negate the fact that you are young, and a lady." The fox said, slipping back into her room. It didn't take long for her, and embarrassingly for Lexi, her mom to return into the bathroom.
"Hey Lexi," Mrs. Adams said, she and Victoria both held out hands for Lexi to take, Victoria knowing how difficult it can be for Lexi in this situation. The two vixens pulled the wolf, who groaned in pain, out of the tub, and helped her back into the bed. Victoria sitting down on the side of the bed.
"Open your face hole." Victoria teased, getting a smile out of the wolf, and a stern look from her mother. Victoria gave her that, what did I do? Look that is only ever given to mothers by their children. She gently placed the thermometer under Lex's tongue. It beeped a good while later. "Well girlie, you do have a fever. A hundred and two point four." She said, showing her girlfriend the readout.
Lexi placed her face into the pillow, muttering a muffled "fuck."
"Victoria, dear," Her mother started.
"Yes mom?"
"Would you keep an eye on Kylie, since Ryan and your dad are at work right now? I'm going to run to the store and pick your girlfriend up some popsicles, and some cranberry juice, and maybe the stuff for me to make some soup."
"If it's alright with her, I'd rather run and do it. My truck's technically parked in a twenty four hour visitor space at her apartment, so I need to bring it back home anyway. Plus I'd like to stop by her apartment and pick her up some things." The younger vixen said, rubbing the wolf's back as she laid face down on the pillow. "Would you be okay if I left for a bit sweetheart?"
Lexi nodded into the pillow. "I'm fine, I'll just try and get some rest while you're gone. Maybe watch some cartoons or something on TV. It is Saturday morning afterall."
Victoria smiled, kissed Lex between her shoulders, then got off the bed. "Mom's got her phone if you need anything before I get back."
Mrs. Adams pulled a heating pad out, and handed it to the wolf. "I understand this helps when you're dealing with these. So Vicky says anyway."
Lex took the heating pad, rolled over onto her left side, and placed the pad on her right side. "Thanks, Mrs. Adams." She said now facing the wall of Victoria's room.
"Lexi, you've been dating Vicky for three years, and it doesn't seem like you're in a hurry to leave. Baby, save yourself some syllables and just call me Mom." She said, standing up. She too kissed Lexi on the cheek, "Is there anything else you need before I leave?"
"Can you hand me Vic's tablet? I'd still like to watch something for a while before trying to sleep again. I could also use some water if you don't mind."
"Sure," She passed the wolf the pink tablet, and gave her a half -hug, before leaving the room. "Get some rest girl."
Lexi thought of her own mom for a minute. She could easily go to her mom's house. Her mom, like Victoria's, didn't even mind the two of them being together in her house. Right now though, there was something comforting about Victoria's smell being all around her. She put down the tablet, finally deciding that if nothing else she at least wanted to talk with her mom.
The phone rang. Lexi, half falling asleep, listened to it. Finally her mom's voice came up on the other end, "Hey what's up?"
"Not much, over at Victoria's, kind of having some issues right now."
"Oh no, what's wrong baby?"
"Kidney stones again."
"You want to come home for the weekend?" Her mom said, sympathetically.
"Not really, just good to talk with you when I feel bad. Victoria's doing plenty to look after me, and right now I kind of feel like I need her near me."
"I understand." Her mom said happily, knowing she was in good hands.
"I just kind of needed to hear your voice, I know it sounds a little sappy, but it helps." She sneezed, sending a rocket of pain through her side. "I love you mom, but I think I'd best try and nap now."
"Get a good rest, call me back tomorrow if you can, let me know how you're doing."
"Will do," Lex said, holding the phone out in front of her, "bye mom." She hung up the phone, and placed it on the headboard of the bed. She pulled the blanket up to where it just barely left her eyes uncovered, shivering a little from the fever. She had almost fallen asleep when she felt a gentle tapping on her shoulder. She knew who it was without even looking. "What is it Kylie?"
"Are you sick? I heard Vicky and Mama talking." She asked innocently.
"Yeah, I'm not feeling really good right now. Would you mind letting me get some sleep munchkin?"
"I just thought I would let you borrow her," Kylie said.
Lex turned over enough to see what the small fox was offering her. It was Mrs. Wuggles, her pink stuffed bunny. She still showed signs of black lipstick and grape. Lexi's arm came out from under the covers, gently taking the bunny and holding it close to her stomach. "Thanks Kylie." She said. She felt the sheets pull down a little and then the tiny fox wrapped her in a hug. "Kylie..."
"Yes Lexi?"
"Not... Not there Kylie, that's where it hurts."
"Sorry."
Instead of hugging, Kylie decided to press her back gently into Lex's. In many ways, since she'd been dating Victoria, Ryan and Kylie were like the younger siblings she'd never had. Ryan, at current, was seventeen, and just figuring out what he wanted to do with himself. Kylie was eight. Lexi had enjoyed watching them mature, being in some ways another older sibling. Something she had never gotten to experience before. She thought back to one time when Ryan, fifteen, had attempted to ask her out after a full year of her dating his sister. Not quite getting the idea that she was in fact, not interested in him in any way. Partly because she was twenty at the time, mostly because of the whole lesbian thing. She giggled at the memory, before wincing in pain. She finally got to sleep, thinking of all the great times, despite fights, mess, and all that she'd had with her lovely foxy.
Victoria had been delayed coming back from the store, partially stopping off for some of Lexi's clothes and personal items. When she came back into her room, she started to say something, but stopped to admire the adorableness of what she saw. Lexi had pulled the blanket down slightly, trying to find the right balance between chilled and hot. This revealed Mrs. Wuggles safely in her arms, with Kylie pressed up against her back. Quietly she walked down stairs. "Oh good, you're back." Her mom said, "Did you check on Lexi see if she needed anything?"
"Mom you should come see this..." The younger vixen said.
Putting her finger on her lips, Victoria led her mother up the stairs and into her room. "Ahh that's just precious..."
"Mom," Victoria said, indicating that they should go elsewhere to continue this conversation. After closing the door of her mom's room, she turned and said "I've been thinking about something recently. This kind of seals my decision on the matter."
"What's up Vicky?"
"I've decided, I'm ready. Lexi and I decided I would set the pace, and I'm ready to propose."
Mrs. Adams was speechless. "Oh baby, that's wonderful." She pulled her daughter into a massive hug. "When are you thinking of doing it? How? Have you picked out a ring?"
"I'm still debating the first part, but I'd like to do it somewhere that our family and hers can be together. I'm especially hoping to do it where we had our first date, at that little Mexican Cafe in Fort Wills."
"What about the ring?"
"That I was actually going to ask about. Do you think I could use Grandma Bernadette's ring." Victoria drew small circles on the floor with her foot, staring downward nervously.
Her mom smiled, putting her hand on her chin and lifting it gently. "You never knew your Grandma Bernadette, but she'd be proud of the young lady you've become today. Of course you can use her ring."
"Thanks mama," The young fox said, hugging her mom tightly. "And do me a favor, don't tell Kylie or Ryan, I'm afraid they'll spoil her surprise."
"My lips are sealed. Now go take care of her."
Without saying much more, Victoria headed up the stairs. She sat on the edge of the bed, first she woke Kylie up, and got her moved out of the way. "Lexi, I'm back, do you need anything?" The sentence the wolf muttered was almost incomprehensible. Victoria put her hand on the wolf's head, then gently bent over and kissed her ear. "Lexi wake up, I think we should take your temperature again."
With some coaxing the wolf finally came around. "Hey babe, what's up what's wrong?"
"What's up is your temperature," She said, placing the thermometer in the wolf's mouth. "One hundred and three point one. I'm gonna take you to get some help," Victoria said, gently rubbing the wolf's cheek.
"Noooo... Okay...." The wolf said.
Victoria told her mom what was happening, and together they managed to carry the wolf out to the truck, and gently load her into the backseat. "Ryan will be home soon," Mrs. Adams said, "When he gets here I'll meet up with the two of you."
For the second time in the past few days Victoria saw one of her loved ones winding up in the ER. She cursed the adventure of her life, wishing it had been a normal boring day today. Lexi on the other hand wished for the release of passing out as she threw up inside a grocery bag. They sat in the waiting room. Lexi awake and nervous sitting in the wheelchair the nurse had used to bring her inside. "Ms. Asher?" Lexi raised her hand. The nurse took her back into the narrow spaces where vitals were taken. "Your pulse is low, but your blood pressure's up." The nurse said. "Have you been drinking plenty of water today?"
"Drank some," Lexi said tiredly, "Threw some of it back up."
"Well you're extremely dehydrated... I'm putting you down to get at least two full rounds of IV fluids. First we're going to try and get some labs, see how bad your infection is, okay?" She gently patted Lex on the shoulder, before pushing her along towards the next triage station.
Lexi nodded, a growing sense of dread building up in her stomach. She was wheeled to the next station where the blood work chair was set up. The nurse waiting there helped her into the chair, bound her arm, and began feeling for a vein. When Lexi saw the size of the needle he had, she began to panic. "Can you bring back my girlfriend please?" She asked, feeling her chest tighten.
"There's really not a lot of room back here, and besides it won't take long." He said, smiling.
"No seriously, girlfriend, get, now! Victoria Adams!" Sighing, the second nurse nodded to the first. Within moments Victoria appeared beside her. "Hey girlie." Lex said with a smile, "kind of dizzy, think I'll just rest my head on your..." Still smiling the wolf passed out, face falling directly into Victoria's boobs.
The nurse tried to be professional, and just continue the lab, but he couldn't suppress the giggle that built up. Victoria rubbed the back of her girlfriend's head, sighing softly. What a fuckin' weekend, she thought.
Lexi came around surprisingly fast, "They just injected the line clearing stuff didn't they?" The wolf said groggily.
"Yeah how'd you know?" Victoria asked, gently removing the wolf from her boobs.
"I can taste it..." Lex grimaced, "It's horrible, kind of like some sort of chemical mixed with ocean water."
The nurse shrugged, "That happens, it should clear up soon."
"I've not had an IV, at least not while I was awake." Victoria said.
Lexi was helped back into the wheelchair, the IV hanging from a pole on the back of the chair. The wolf was wheeled to a small room with a single bed, it was cramped to say the least, there were two chairs on one side of the bed, the other filled with equipment of all sorts. The nurse helped Lexi into the bed, mounting the IV on the pole above the bed, and connecting a pressure cuff to her arm. "This will go off every few minutes or so, it sends reports back to the nurse's station if anything goes wrong." He also clipped a blood oxygen monitor to her finger. "Anything you need?"
"A blanket maybe this IV's colder than Jotunheim."
"I'll see what I can do, with your fever I'll have to check with the doctor."
"How about some water or juice?"
"No oral fluids or food yet, sorry."
Lex moaned dramatically, "you're killing me here..."
"I assure you I'm trying to do just the opposite of that." The nurse said winking.
Lex held her hand off the side of the bed, Victoria sat on one of the chairs next to the bed holding her hand comfortingly. "One thing I could think of," Lexi said arching her back a little involuntarily, "some pain meds maybe." She squeezed Victoria's hand a little, the fox winced for a second. "Sorry, that wasn't on purpose."
"That's alright, I love you enough to put up with your shit." The fox said, lifting Lex's hand to her face, kissing it. Lexi smiled happily, laying back and closing her eyes even though she was shivering slightly. Even Victoria could feel the chill through Lexi's hand. The nurse returned, bringing a blanket he considered draping it himself for a minute, but passed it to Victoria instead.
"Anything else I can get her?"
"She asked for some pain medicine, her side's hurting fiercely." He nodded before heading back out. Returning momentarily with a small needle that he injected into the IV port.
"Blech... I hate it when they do that..." Lexi said, making a face as she opened her eyes again. Victoria spread the blanket over her, making sure she was comfortable, then she returned to her chair.
It didn't take long for the medicine to kick in, one moment the wolf was sitting there quietly watching TV the next she was out like a light. Her breathing slightly easier than it had been. She didn't even wake up when the cuff inflated, the motor buzzing loudly. Victoria was glad to see her relaxed at last. She still held her hand, even though the wolf's fingers had relaxed when she fell asleep, mostly because she didn't want to feel quite so lonely with her mate asleep. She was sitting and watching a home renovation show when someone knocked on the door. Without even looking over the fox said "Come in."
She had been expecting another doctor or a nurse. The person who came in was an older wolf, black with graying hair, a small gray patch started on her muzzle leading from the white patch on her chin. She moved across the floor, the fox still not really paying attention to anything, mostly zoned out. It wasn't until she was directly in front of her that the fox realized who it was. She reached out with her free hand, hugging the older wolf around the waist. "Hey Vic," Mrs. Asher said, returning the hug. "How's she doing?"
"She's alright, still likely has a couple more stones, but right now they've given her some medication for the pain."
"That's good," She said, putting her hand on top of her daughter's, still being held by the fox. "How about you, are you alright?"
"I'm fine I guess. I'm a little hungry because we hadn't had lunch yet before heading over here."
"Why don't you go grab yourself a bag of chips or something, that way you're not quite so miserable." Mrs. Asher pulled a few bills out of her purse, handing them to the fox. "I passed a couple vending machines on the way in."
Victoria stood, kissing her girlfriend's hand before placing it carefully under the blanket. She took the bills from the older wolf and smiled, "Thanks." She started to leave the room but paused, "How did you know we were here, I haven't had a chance to call you yet."
"Mom Code Item One: When another mom's baby is sick enough to end up in the ER you inform her immediately." The older wolf said grinning.
"I'm glad at least mom thought of you... I'm sorry, I should have called sooner."
"It's alright, your focus was on Lex, and I appreciate that."
With one more look at her sleeping lady, Victoria quietly exited the room. Lexi woke slightly at the door closing this time, her eyes heavy and a little glazed. She rolled her head over, looking at the figure next to her. Even without her glasses, and with the drugs blurring her vision slightly, she recognized her. "Mom..." Was all she could think to say at the moment.
The older wolf stood up, kissing her child on the forehead. "Yes baby, I'm here. Victoria will be back in a moment, she hadn't stopped to take care of her own needs since she brought you here." The younger wolf didn't say much, she reached her arm out indicating as best she could the desire for a hug.
The visit to the hospital lasted about eight hours, between two rounds of fluids and a procedure using sonic pulses to break up the remaining two stones. It had been around two in the afternoon when they arrived, and it was about ten as they were leaving. Victoria and Mrs. Asher had gone ahead of the Nurse wheeling Lexi out to get the truck ready for the wolf. Lexi was high off another dose of pain medicine, and was singing musical numbers with half the lyrics and none of the pitch. As she was being hoisted into the truck, her head fell in Victoria's lap, looking up at the fox she started singing
"PLEASE LET ME SAY IT, ONE TIME LOUDER! I LOVE YOU! I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT YOU, BABY!"
From the show she was working on with her school's production group. Victoria groaned, sliding carefully out from under the wolf, so that she was laid comfortably along the back seat of the truck, they fastened her in as best they could, and the older Wolf and the Fox hugged goodbye. "I'll take care of her." Victoria said.
"I know you will."
Looking back in her rearview mirror, Victoria smiled at the wolf who was still singing her random show tunes. She shook her head, suppressing the urge to video the hapless canine. Instead, she started the truck and drove home. After having her brother help get Lexi up the stairs, the fox brought them both a steaming hot bowl of soup, neither of them having eaten that day. Lexi's fever hadn't quite broken entirely, but it was down enough that regular medicine could help take care of it, and she had successfully drank three small bottles of water at the hospital, proving she was able to keep liquids down. After downing the soup hungrily, Victoria moved the bowls aside, and settled in next to the wolf, gently wrapping her in her arms. The wolf was already asleep, still drowsy from the illness and the pain meds. The wolf was warm and comforting in the fox's arms. "Goodnight gal-o-mine." Victoria said, kissing her on the side of the neck. "And sweet dreams." Lex sighed in her sleep, pushing back slightly against the fox's body. Victoria didn't mind a few days this bad, in exchange for many nights this good.
