Chapter 7
The Game’s Afoot
As the rest of the coven got ready to load their subdued coven brothers into the van, they heard something running through the bushes.
Coming out of the bushes was an injured and disheveled Luso, his standard tunic dirty and ripped in several places. He was panting hard, and was covered in scrapes and bruises.
“I… I’m sorry…” He panted as he collapsed on his knees. “I got here… Too late…”
Egad and Chaos helped Luso up, slinging his arms around their shoulders. “It’s ok, Luso. We’ve got them subdued. You’re safe now.”
Back At Egad’s Castle…
Symon and Mick helped check on Luso with the rest of the coven. Galen, Uniko, and Zhal were restrained in the dungeon for everyone’s safety. Luso recounted what had happened after Julian had left with Tommy and Silva. The guard managed to find them, and Galen told Luso to run when he realized that they were hopelessly outnumbered. During the fight, Luso had taken some injuries and Galen had no choice but to pick Luso up and throw him with all of his strength over the rest of the guard. Luso made Galen’s throw count by using a spell that lightened his weight. That spell saved his life, as he flew over the wall of the town and into the forest, where he quickly started to find his way back to the main road, so he could get back to the castle.
As Symon ran his scanners over Galen, Uniko, and Zhal’s bodies, he found that Cailus had placed his control chips into Galen, Uniko, and Zhal’s forearms. Not only that, but these new chips were highly upgraded, using the latest technology that made them small and difficult to detect. It took Symon a good three hours of scanning to find them. Then it was just a simple matter of getting them out using a pre-programmed auto-doc that Codec was able to operate, which left Galen, Uniko, and Zhal with no scars or visible wounds once they were done.
Once they were free of the control chips, Egad used his magic to awaken them. Once they were awake, the three towers fell to their knees in front of Egad.
“Master… We’re sorry, we’ve failed you…” Galen said, sadness in his tone.
“Galen, there was no way you could have known the guard would gang up on you like that.” Egad said. “You, Uniko, and Zhal haven’t failed me. You may rise.”
The three towers stood up, still feeling a bit of shame even though Egad’s kind words lessened the sting of the incident. Amon, Silva, and Tommy came forward, embracing their now free coven brothers.
“Now…” Egad now turned to the new arrival, Julian. “You seem to know some of what is going on in the village. Care to share the info you have?”
“Gladly,” Julian replied. “I’ve been in the village for a few days, and the tension in the guard has gone over the top. I can only guess that Cailus has implanted not just the guard, but Galen and Zhal’s families as well as Telven Mel’Andrea, the town’s noble. Cailus got the help from a mercenary named Kim Scam, who he paid to infiltrate the guard and implant the chips in their bodies while they slept. The chips, despite having the latest technical edge, are still venerable to elevated heat levels, so the guard has mainly been prowling around at night.”
“I see…” Egad said, taking in all the information like a sponge. “But why help us?”
Julian looked over at Galen, blushing a bit. “...Let’s just say I have a personal interest in this, as well as wanting a bit of revenge on Cailus for him taking away someone that meant the universe to me.”
Egad quickly saw where this was going, even without the hint of clairvoyance magic he had been using. Julian was trying to find out what happened to his former boyfriend who had disappeared six years ago. “I assume you are referencing Lenny Leoson?” Egad said, voicing the name of Julian’s lover.
Juian’s eyes widened for a few moments as he temporarily recoiled from Egad, but he quickly calmed himself. “...Yeah, that’s him. Lenny had applied for a wrestling sponsorship with one of Cailus’s old companies six years ago, and after going to see Cailus for an ‘Evaluation’ as the operator on the phone put it, he disappeared and never came back home. I’ve been trying to figure out what happened to him ever since, and all the evidence I’ve gathered points to your brother, Lord Foxmorre.” Julian said.
Egad sighed. “I understand. However, I don’t think it’s going to be a good idea for you to leave the castle tonight. It’s too dangerous for you to go to Mel’Andrea, because I’m afraid Cailus’s goons in the town will drag you off to him if you showed up. I’ll have you stay here with us until we can figure this out.”
Julian nodded. “That’s kind of you,”
Egad then turned to Galen, and Amon. “However, Julian, you will have to share a bed with Galen and Amon tonight. The guest quarters are currently being… Refurbished.” Egad winked at Galen and Amon. “I trust this won’t be a problem for you?”
Julian, completely broadsided by this sudden move, blushed deeply. “...It won’t be a problem, no.”
“Good.” Egad said. “Chaos, put the castle on security level Defcon-4 tonight, and make sure the doors are locked and security measures are active. We don’t want any more surprises, right?”
“Of course, master.” Chaos said. “It shall be done.”
