A short story inspired by those woolly mice Colossal Biosciences created.

Before they started talking about dire wolves.

Seth, a common brown mouse with a slight build, lay in an exam chair wearing nothing but a hospital gown. “So what kind of drugs am I testing?” he asked the lab-coated doctor filling a syringe.

“I’m afraid that I can’t tell you that,” she explained, squirting a small amount of liquid out of the tip. “It was all explained in the NDA you signed.”

“What?” Seth exclaimed. “What if- ow!” his statement was cut off by the needle piercing his thigh. Searing pain shot up his femur as the needle remained in his leg for a small eternity. “Jesus! I don’t remember my last shot hurting that much!”

“I had to drive it into the bone,” the doctor explained. At his horrified expression she tried to reassure him, “if there are any unexpected reactions, we’ll cover your treatment.”

“Unexpected reactions?!” he could not believe this. The ad had just said a simple metabolic study, it had seemed like a simple way to get the money for his top surgery. But now his muscles felt like they were on fire! A raging inferno that blazed up and down his leg, across his crotch, down his other leg, and up his belly. “Oh God it burns!”

“That’s just the injection, we can give you a painkiller.” The doctor turned to pick up another bottle from the tray. “You shouldn’t be seeing any…” she dropped the bottle as she turned back towards him. “What the Hell?”

He raised his head as much as the safety restraints would allow him and saw that the hair around the injection site was growing extremely fast and thick. It was like a nature documentary about grass growing at 1000x speed. At first, the searing pain made him think that it was a fire spreading up his leg, but no, it was fur. Long and shaggy yellow fur! “Is this one of those unexpected reactions?”

“That can’t be happening,” the doctor raced towards an alarm button on the far wall. “It’s too fast!”

The wool now covered his right leg in its entirety and was starting to spread across his waist and down his other leg. “Too fast?!” he exclaimed. “No shit it’s going too fast, wait? Were you expecting this much hair?!”

An alarm blared and liquid streamed down from the ceiling. It stung where it landed on him, like antiseptic, or acid. The pain of the liquid only amplified the burning of the drugs creeping up his veins. Before he passed out from shock he wondered how he could survive this?

He found himself in the middle of a snowy field. His body had made an indentation in the snow, as he stood up more snow shucked off of his furry back. Despite the flakes falling down all around him he didn’t feel cold. It was strange, he should be freezing, shouldn’t he?

Wait, that was a sign of hypothermia, wasn’t it? No longer feeling the cold? He needed to find shelter, fast!

He spun around, looking for signs of buildings somewhere. But the blizzard obscured everything more than thirty feet away from him. He stumbled forwards, hoping for any sign of shelter. Finally, a blurry shape emerged from the storm.

He lurched towards this tiny sign of hope, as he picked up the pace the shape grew larger and larger. Slowly it gained definition as he approached, tall, irregular, and swaying?

That was no building! He stopped, but the shape continued towards him. It extended a long tendril towards him, snow crunching beneath its feet.

He turned back around and ran in the opposite direction. After only a few steps he tripped on one of his own deep footprints. Meanwhile the creature continued crunching towards him.

A long and muscular appendage twice as thick as a garden hose and covered in fur wrapped around his waist. As it lifted him he tried to run away again, but it held him in an implacable grip. To either side of him he saw gigantic white teeth, curling up towards the sky.

It must be eating him! He concluded. Whatever this creature was, it clearly wanted him as a meal. He fought against the tentacle? Tongue? Whatever it was he grabbed at its coils and tried to pull them away, but it did not give.

The appendage holding him twisted around, and he finally had a good look at the creature. A massive head, covered in shaggy blond fur, with no visible mouth but a long nasal protrusion between a pair of long curling tusks. A mammoth! He realized.

The prehistoric giant held him up to its eye, shrouded by thick bangs. A deep rumble resounded up the trunk and through his chest, concluding with an ear splitting trumpet. His muscles tingled from the vibrations, relaxing, soothing tensions that he didn’t even realize were there. An energy seemed to fill in the little tears in his fibers, building them back up stronger. He flexed, and the trunk around him loosened its grip.

The mammoth stared at him, its deep brown eyes seeming to bore into his very soul…

When he woke up, he found himself lying in a hospital bed with side rails that towered over his slight form. Monitors beeped steadily next to him as he tried to lean up.

He barely made it six inches before his motion was arrested by something around his neck. It felt like a thick, but mercifully well-padded collar. He attempted to lift his arm, only to find a leather cuff around his shaggy wrist. The cuff seemed to be caught on the rail somehow, so he tugged at it.

After one firm tug there was a metallic “snap” and his arm came loose. He raised his hand up to his eye and noticed a few links of chain dangling from the cuff.

“The Hell?” he thought. He pulled on his other arm and heard another snap. “Okay,” he considered his woolly arms. “Either they have some really cheap chains here…” he reached behind his head and felt for the chain binding his collar to the bed frame. “Or they fed me a bunch of steroids.”

He twisted the chain and it snapped easily. As he leaned forward to free his legs the sensors attached to his chest came loose, and he heard the heart monitor blare with the extended “beeeeeppppp” sound he’d heard in a dozen medical dramas. Realizing he only had so long before somebody came in to check he sprang out of the bed, barely feeling the remaining chains snap. As soon as his feet hit the ground he charged for the door, which shattered against his shoulder in a shower of splinters.

He found himself in a hallway that stretched out in either direction. The clatter of footsteps alerted him to the approach of a squad of security guards. He raced off in the opposite direction.

As he rounded the corner he passed by a row of picture windows. He paused to take a peek outside, and stopped dead in his tracks. His reflection in the glass was covered head to toes with a thick coat of shaggy yellowish-brown fur. His large round ears were half-buried in his wool. He opened his mouth wide, looking behind his molars, but didn’t see anything.

A door opening drew his attention to the wall behind him. The doctor from earlier stepped out of a room, focused on a tablet in her hands. “You!” he shouted, rushing towards her.

He was disappointed to see that despite his fur and muscle growth he was still a head shorter than her. “What did you do to me?!”

The doctor’s eyes widened in shock at the woolly mouse pinning her against the wall. “You, it can’t be this fast…”

“What,” he snarled. “Did you do?”

“Gene therapy,” he gasped. “Preliminary study to revive extinct species.”

“Extinct species?” he replied in confusion. “What spe…” the image of a massive furry trunk and tusks returned to his mind. “Mammoth?”

“You only received the genes for fur and fat storage,” the doctor explained. “But we weren’t expecting this dramatic reaction.”

“Then what were you expecting?” his hands began to curl into fists as he simmered with rage. But his ears perked up as he heard more footsteps approaching rapidly.

A pair of projectiles impacted his side, crackling ominously but he barely felt anything. He glanced down and saw a blunt black dart stuck to his fur, flashing with arcs of electricity and producing a small puff of smoke. Yanking it loose he spotted the guards pointing more tasers just as they fired.

Another dart hit him in the chest but he was already moving. In a panic he crashed through the window. Glass shattered, shearing off bits of his wool and nicking his ear. Then he fell, three stories passed in a blur, and finally he crashed into the roof of a BMW parked in front of the building.

He lay there in the indentation he’d made in the car’s roof for a hot minute. Then he dared to lift his arm. He was sore, yes, but miraculously nothing felt like it was broken, not even his tail. Cautiously he rolled over and climbed out of the dent he’d made.

He leapt to the ground and looked around. He could scale the fence and escape into the woods, but then what? Where could a freak like him go?

As the alarms sounded and guards poured out he knew that he had to make his decision fast.

Seth heard an explosion coming from behind him and upwards. He looked back at the tower he’d just escaped from just in time to watch another window on the top floor detonate in a flash of fire and smoke. As he was staring upwards the security guards that had followed him out started yelping in pain. A pink and black blur zipped from one guard to another, striking each one on the neck. Seth felt the fingers hit his collarbone before he got a good look at the perpetrator.

She was a weasel or mongoose of some kind, with fuchsia hair and maroon fur. She wore a piecemeal black outfit with fishnets covering her cleavage, a gold nose ring, and a pair of magenta-colored glasses. He felt a small static shock as she touched him, and he almost reflexively lashed out at her.

Seth sent the mustelid staggering back from the fist to her torso. A gray rabbit wearing a black jumpsuit and his own pink glasses dashed out between them, grabbing for the mouse’s face. Seth tried to intercept the rabbit’s hand, managing to grab his wrist, but failed to stop him from making contact.

Almost immediately he felt oddly relaxed and calm. Seth loosened his grip. Wincing in pain the rabbit looked into his eyes and stated, “you’re not with Gargantuan, are you?”

“No,” Seth replied. “They did some kind of genetic experiment on me. I’m trying to escape.”

“That explains a few things,” the mongoose coughed. “Thanks for the distraction, by the way.’

“Sara,” the rabbit added. “Let’s go before the capes arrive.” He turned back to Seth. “You wanna come?”

He looked over the two strange anthros. “Go with you? Who are…” Seth made the connection. Superpowers, pink glasses, sexy outfits, “you’re the Korps!”

“Yep!” replied the one referred to as “Sara.” She pointed to the rabbit, “he’s CuddleBun, he/him. I’m Snakebite, she/her. We came her to steal their research data. Maybe it included your experiment.”

Seth considered the two supervillains. He was of two minds about the Korps. On the one hand, people kept comparing him to them ever since he’d come out as trans. On the other, it was getting harder and harder to defend the “heroes.” And where else could he go? “Seth,” he introduced himself. “He/him.”
