Summer's End
Imported from SF2 with no description.
Took a bit but I figured out where I wanted to go from the last part. I switched to first person, just prefer it.
I sat in my room, Summer was drawing to a close and soon I would be starting at Andromeda Academy. Nearly eight years had passed since I was tested. Most of the time I refused to remember it. I had my normal friends, my normal childhood. But Magus Roberts had helped a lot. He started coming around more after my fifteenth birthday.
For a guy ten years older than me he was kind of attractive. Two proctors short is what he had said. Fresh out of the Academy himself he was strong armed into sitting in on the testing. Same with what's her face, the bitchy one. Wait, didn't she fail the test? Yeah, she did, Magus Roberts mentioned that. Maybe I should have asked why she was even there then.
I rolled out of my computer chair and onto my bed. Looking straight up at the ceiling. The Summer was over. I clenched my teeth, refusing to cry. My friends, my life, that was all in the past now. They'd go to high school just across town and me, I'd be hours away. Up in the mountains, small town of....What was it's name?
I clenched my hands into tight fists. Who cares what the town was called? I was angry for a brief moment and that melted away. Hecate, that's what it was called. I couldn't be mad at the town. It was warded, humans couldn't reach it. Meaning it was one of the few places on Earth where we could always look like us.
That made me happy, in some small way, but it was something. It was nice being fully lion. On my terms anyway. I narrowed my eyes, glaring at my closed door. My mom always got a fight when she wanted me to change. I snorted and rolled onto my side, facing the wall. Back to being angry, better than being sad. I wanted to punch something, throw something. But I just laid there seething.
There was no knock when my door opened. I heard shoes moving across the wooden floor before the door closed again.
“She suggested knocking, but I could smell your anger from the other side of town."
I sighed and turned my head to look at Magus Roberts.
“Yeah, I would have yelled thinking it was her."
The older male smiled, crouching next to my bed.
“You really should calm down. Phones work where we're going. Email, text messages. It's hardly the middle of nowhere."
“But it also is the middle of nowhere. The whole school year without friends."
“And here we go again. Look, you'll be back after the final term ends. Besides, what would you do after graduating here? Stalk your friends for life? Force them to go wherever it is you end up no matter what? People move on, it happens."
“I don't make friends easily though. More time with them would be nice."
“Thank you for not ripping my head off." He said with another smile.
“Damn you, why do you have to be so you?"
“We've been over that as well. I'm ten years older than you. Hormones and all. You'll find someone your age, who is nice."
“What about you then? You go grey and end up like Magus Josiah? Alone with his game shows."
“So you are only showing interest out of pity then? Because I cant do better on my own?"
“Your words big kitty, not mine."
“You cant have a crush on your teacher before school even starts."
“You've said that before. How can I resist? The hormones and your sexy tiger body?"
“Don't make me get the spray bottle."
“Fine, but don't come crying to me when I move on. Our forbidden romance will go unrealized."
“Indeed it shall. Ready to roll? If we hang about much longer your mom will just keep bugging you."
“Yeah, suitcase is under my bed all ready to go. One duffel bag, one backpack. A handful of hard goodbyes. But I took care of those yesterday so let's just go."
Magus Roberts took my duffel bag and I threw my backpack over my shoulder. Pulling the suitcase from it's temporary home under my bed before we walked out. Naturally my mom was busy chatting up anyone who would listen to her. Telling whichever friend it was now on the phone that I was leaving for that super special private school.
She cut the conversation short when she saw us descending the stairs. Hanging up before rushing over to see us off.
“My baby is all grown up. Look at you my special man."
“Yes, I am an adult. Could we please just act like it?"
“Now see here Isaac Walter, you will always be my baby."
I clenched my jaw, “Fine whatever. Could you not call me by my middle name? You know I hate it."
“Well I like it and some day you will too."
I rolled my eyes and muttered, “Fat chance."
She hugged me, kissed both my cheeks and cried. Typical mom behavior. When she was finally done with her goodbyes we slipped from the house. I dashed to the car, feeling like at any moment sirens would blare and the guards would rush out to drag me back for more. I helped Magus Roberts store my bags in the trunk before climbing into the passenger seat.
“Drive, drive and don't look back" I said half pleading while avoiding looking at the house I just escaped from.
He gave a wave to my mom, who was likely standing on the porch waving at us. I remained on high alert until two blocks down the road when we made our first turn. Forcing my home and street out of sight. I slumped back in my seat.
“I don't have to go back do I?" I asked breaking the silence.
“No, you can stay on campus during holidays and breaks. Though most want to get away after being stuck at the school."
“She'll just drive me nuts. Asking about the school and how I'm doing. Then drone on and on about how she told her friends things about me. You should have came sooner."
“You know the rules. We wait so you have time to mature. Even small magical abilities can be greatly abused by children. In rare cases we have to seal someone's abilities away until they reach your age. That is rare though, most are lucky to manage any amount of magic even after leaving the Academy."
“Yeah, but she was getting really bad towards the end. Couldn't wait to get me away from my friends. Rush me out to magic school so I can graduate and become a very impressive stock broker or whatever. Doubt she even knows beyond me going to a flashy and exclusive school."
“Do you want to be a stock broker?"
“Not really, what do you do when you're not checking up on me?"
“Teach mostly, though I have been known to tell fortunes in a dark tent."
“Oh? Sounds very mysterious. Do you wear a veil when you do it and talk with a heavy Romanian accent?"
“Naturally, the heaviest accents get me the biggest tips. Madam Samuel Roberts knows and sees all."
Magus Roberts turned and grinned at me briefly as he drove. I just shook my head returning the smile.
“Do any of us actually do that?" I asked.
“Some do, some give real fortunes. Others put on a good show. The rest are just humans peddling for what coin they can get. Though on rare occasion some of them actually have limited psychic abilities. It's rarer for them than it is for our kind."
“So there isn't much of a market for teaching magic to humans then?" I asked with a grin.
“Afraid not, give it a few years and maybe I'll need an assistant."
I sat up straight at that. Looking over at the older male.
“Really? I wouldn't mind." I said getting a soft chuckle from Magus Roberts.
“Bit young to be needing full time help. Wouldn't you rather be around people your own age?"
“I like you though. Besides all my friends are back there. In our world I don't know too many people."
“Just the hormones talking, when they mellow out a bit you wont want me. As for friends you fought against knowing anyone who wasn't human. Kind of dug that hole for yourself."
“Try having my mom and get back to me about non human friends. Woman is a menace. If she wasn't so interested in my life I wouldn't care so much. But it's my life, not hers. She should try living hers for a change. Ya know?"
“Single mother with a gifted child. You're not the only one in the world who felt pressures like that. To always be perfect, always bragging about you. Though most in that situation just cave to the pressure and do what they can to appease their overbearing parents. You fought against it, rebelling every single step of the way."
“Never thought about other kids like that. Kind of feel bad for them. Perfect grades, parents deciding what activities they do outside of school. Every moment of every day decided for them. Then they graduate and are told how every moment beyond has already been planned out for them. I'd kill myself, no way to live."
“Maybe I should call you Madam Isaac, getting all dramatic like that. Woe is you, the child whose life has streets paved in solid gold."
I smiled and leaned against Magus Roberts best I could while secured with a lap belt. The older male just sighed and gently nudged me back onto my side of the car.
“Keep it to your side lover boy. Last thing we need is to wreck while I'm fending you off."
“Fine then older kitty cat, I'll just wait for you then. Cant say no to this face when I'm of age."
“I'm sure your mom would love that. Her eighteen year old son coming home with his then twenty-eight year old boyfriend. I could just about be your dad you know."
“Ew, don't say it like that. I wouldn't mind you being that old. No daddy stuff though, totally weird. It's a fetish you know. Age play and what not. Just weird, who would want to shag their dad?"
“Someone out there I'm sure. You've been on the internet, you must know all about it."
“Well yeah but I like normal stuff. Just two guys doing their thing. Very plain and simple."
“How 1950s of you." Magus Roberts said with a chuckle.
“You saying you like leather and whips or something? Grab the paddle and show your naughty boy who the real man is?"
“Oh yeah totally, and instead of a safe word I use a complex series of hand signs and whistles."
“Someone is freaky." I said with a grin.
“Not even, just figured I'd finish what you started is all."
The rest of the drive seemed to fly by as we talked our time away. Joking and making conversation. The road snaked it's way through a dense forest and up a mountain. Taking us further and further away from civilization.
After six hours of driving we made our way into the town. It looked just like every other one we passed. Only the people were covered in fur or scales. I smiled, again, this is what I liked. Would have given anything to just be a lion all the time with my human friends.
Wasting no time I changed. Fur coating my body, ears sliding to the top of my head as my face pushed out into a muzzle. I squirmed, reaching back to free my tail. Why do I always forget about the tail? My shoes, I forgot my feet too. Fighting to get them off as my ankle struggled to slide up into place.
“Should have thought that through."
“I know, but I was excited. Don't change for myself very often."
“Liar, I could smell it all over your room without changing myself."
“Well if you had you would have smelled more than that." I said wiggling what was supposed to be my eyebrows.
“Which is why I didn't sit on your bed."
I crossed my arms, “Hey now. My blanket and sheets were clean. I use a towel. Which I forgot to wash and left tucked under my bed."
“Your mom will love that I'm sure."
“At least that'll be something she wont tell all her friends about."
“You sure about that?"
I just shrugged and went back to looking out the window.
“Your mane is almost fully grown in."
“I knew you had a crush on me. It's okay my love. Our romance shall blossom once I am of age. Until then I shall write you sonnets and sing you songs. Off key of course, cheesy songs too, super cliché ones. It'll be like that 80s movie where I'm out front with the boom box."
“I expect you think I know what that movie was?"
“Beats me, I just remember the commercial of it back in the VHS days."
We pulled up to the school grounds. The main building was large, three stories tall. On either side there were two smaller buildings. The dorms were two story buildings that sat several hundred feet from the main building. From the signs the two on the right were the boys and the two on the left were for girls.
“The school can house well over 500 students. We never have that many though. Even with students coming from all over the world we rarely have more than a hundred. This year's Freshman class is only 23. Up from last year by four though."
“So my options for friends is ever smaller than I thought, gee thanks for telling me that."
“You'll be fine, I teach English and Energy Manipulation. So you'll have at least one friendly face."
“You say that but you wont snuggle at night and tell me everything will be alright."
“Sorry, you'll have to find a classmate for that."
“At least you apologized. Seriously though, thanks, for everything."
“No problem, want me to show you to your room and help you get settled?"
“You can if we can flirt a bit. If not just point me in the right direction and I'll figure it out. On my own, all alone, just me, by myself, alone. Did I mention alone because I'll be completely and totally alone."
He narrowed his eyes at me before changing into his tiger self. Gaining a couple inches of height more on me. His long slender tail swayed behind him as he looked down into my eyes.
“What the hell? Your tail just! Oh I hate you! All on it's own and this! This worthless thing here!" I shouted grabbing the tufted end of my tail and shaking it threateningly at him.
“You make it look so easy." I finished losing what fight I had in me. Dropping my tail and lowering my ears.
He sighed and hefted my suitcase from the trunk of his car. “You really make this difficult you know? You're my jail bait, that's what you are. Just suck it up and wait. When you're an adult, a real adult, like me, you can make all the choices you want. You have my permission to do so, make them, make away. But right now, there is a line."
“Will you really wait for me?"
“To get older? Yes, because I, unlike you, care about what the consequences will be."
“No what I meant was, will you really, wait for me?"
“Not date anyone for the next three years and change? So you can live out your hormone fueled fantasy of getting into my pants? Fat chance kid, time waits for no man."
“Hey don't call me kid. You're barely older than me in the grand scheme of things."
We didn't say much as I followed him to the dorm I would be staying in. The Northeastern building was mine. He checked the list and started up to the second floor. My room was pretty average. Floor, walls, ceiling, it even had paint.
“My bachelor pad kinda sucks doesn't it?"
“Sure thing Romeo, the little twin sized bed is what will stop you from getting the ladies."
He placed my suitcase on the bed while I just dumped the bags I was carrying next to the desk that sat against the opposite wall.
“You'll be alright Isaac, I promise. Dinner will be at six in the main building. Entrance term doesn't start for a couple more days so it'll just be you tonight most likely. Schedules will be handed out day before Fall term begins after you do your entrance exams."
“This right here," he said pulling a note pad sized book from his coat pocket. “Lists all the campus rules and procedures. Break the rules and you're out. They will seal your powers and you get sent back to the human world. It is rare that it happens, but it does."
“So I can get kicked out?"
“Yeah but before you get too happy about that they seal all your powers. Even your ability to change. Which from how excited you were seems to be something you like. Magus Giles is the Headmaster. It would be Magus Josiah but most of the staff thinks he's too old. Though he swears he never wanted the position to begin with."
“Old dude is still alive?"
“Sure is, he teaches some of the more advanced classes. Which usually means no one. Higher magic is hard to achieve. Impossible for most and the few who do reach that point find it to be nearly so."
With that he left me alone to my thoughts. Closing the door behind him. I'd have to leave campus to get my uniform before actual term began. I pushed the suitcase off the bed, letting it hit the floor before flopping back on it on my belly.
“I'm a teenage were-lion and I'm in private school."
“Actually you're a Quisleo" said a voice from the hallway.
I groaned and got up to open the door. Pulling it open I saw Magus Josiah standing in the hallway. He was dusting the portraits the lined the walls.
“A what?"
“Quisleo my boy, Quisleo. I know all the old racial names. Lost in time they have been. Shame, like many things, shame."
“I don't understand."
“Of course not, that is why you're here. This house of learning. Hang on, have we met?"
“Kind of" I said watching as he moved portrait to portrait dusting.
“You were small weren't you?"
“Everyone was small at one point in life. Part of living, you grow up."
“Indeed, to grow and become old. Weren't you angry?"
“I was, and you were excited about your game show."
“Ah yes, the Wheel of Fortune. Gotta spin it to win it my boy, gotta spin it to win it."
“I wouldn't know, I don't watch game shows."
“You were angry, didn't like knowing you had it in you. Live your life for yourself and don't worry so much about others. You'll be happier. The Gods know I would have been had I just done so earlier on."
“Well I'll leave you to your dusting sir, good night."
“Good night my dear Quisleo."
Dude is nuts, old and off his rocker. I slumped back across my bed. Better not think out loud while I'm here. Old dusty might hear me. He had a point though, we both agreed it was my life. The rest of the evening went by normally. I had dinner, alone. I really was the only student on campus. The teachers it seemed had their own dining room or ate in their rooms.
I was told by the cook what time to expect breakfast. After that I didn't encounter anyone else. I stared out the window at the town for a while before deciding to just go to sleep. The thought to text Magus Roberts crossed my mind but he would get mad if I asked for cuddles so I just closed my eyes and waited for sleep to take me.
I spent most of the next two days alone. It seemed no one else was really in a hurry to get to the school. I couldn't blame them, they had normal parents. I decided to go into town and get my uniform taken care of. I spent half an hour in the tailor shop being measured and having bundles of clothes thrown at me by a short mole rat.
Five pairs of slacks, dress shirts, two blazers and three sweater vests. The blazer and vest had the school crest on them. A shield with a boar headed staff in the middle of it. I rolled my eyes.
“Bet the school motto is E Pluribus Unum or some bullshit."
“Actually it's Scientia Omnia Vincit. Knowledge conquers all."
I turned to look at who had said that. My eyes falling on an elderly wolf. He bore a slightly annoyed expression.
“Sorry," I said bowing my head slightly.
“Magus Orwell, I'll be teaching you Old World History. To the best of my ability anyway."
With that he gave a sort of grunt and started on his way back down the sidewalk. I just shrugged to myself and headed in the opposite direction back to the school.
“I gave up my life for people who are always listening when I'm thinking out loud. And I'm doing it again."
I looked around to see if anyone was listening before making a mad dash back to my dorm room. I pulled open the closet door and looked at the dresser that was just inside. No time like the present to start unpacking. I packed away my school clothes neatly into the top drawer and across the hanger bar. My casual clothes were more or less stuffed hastily into the remaining three drawers.
The day just before entrance term others started to show up. Two weeks of testing to determine what classes we'd be taking. I didn't know much about what all was offered beyond the normal stuff. Algebra through calculus, English, normal History and Science. Magus Roberts didn't say much beyond it being mostly the same classes all high school students took.
That was due to the fact that even though we all had some level of magical abilities most of us wouldn't be able to make much use of them in the real world. We'd have to get real jobs and rely on that. The magic classes were to teach us control and mastery. So we didn't abuse our power or do something dangerous.
I mostly stayed in my room. Not in a hurry to meet anyone I wasn't going to be friends with. I made up my mind on the sort of people they'd be. By the book hard workers who just wanted to please mumzy and dadzy. I huffed, stuck up jerks. I thought back to my friends. Practically yanking my phone from my pocket.
It had died and I didn't even notice. I fell off the bed while trying to reach for my backpack. Grunting and hoping no one heard that. I crawled to my bag and pulled the charger and cable from it. Plugging it all in to an outlet next to the nightstand by my bed. Waiting for it to get enough juice to start up.
I didn't even wait for it to finish starting up. Fighting the sluggish device to send a group text to my friends. I wasn't able to tell them anything beyond the norm. So I just told them I was settling in and that I missed them.
It didn't take long for the responses to come pouring in. Eric chidded me for being too ticked to text the first day. Matt agreed and called me a bitch. Thanks guys, I love you too. Ben cut me some slack, he always did. Saying that I just needed a bit of space.
When lunch drew near I got up and left my room. There was only one other person in the dining hall when I entered. I grabbed a tray from Magus Josiah who was serving lunch today for some reason. I just shook my head, grabbed my turkey sandwich, salad, glass of milk and found the furthest empty table from the doors.
I ate in silence, kind of wishing I could just eat in my dorm. I didn't know if there was a rule for that and then I remembered the little book Magus Roberts left me. My ears lowering, I hadn't even opened it. There were only ten or students in the dining hall by the time I finished. The rest were pushing it close. Exams started right after breakfast tomorrow.
I walked straight into a slender dragon as I rounded the corner to leave the dining hall. I apologized and moved to get around him when I felt his hand on my wrist.
“What's the hurry?"
“None of your business, let me go. Now."
He did before giving a snort. I watched as he slipped into the room behind me to get his food. This place wasn't normal by any means. No way I was going to make friends. I was halfway back to my dorm when Magus Roberts caught up with me.
“Rough day?"
“Some jerk bumped into me and then after I apologized he acted like I was still at fault."
“He's probably jealous. Magus Josiah told me you had great potential. So either he is completely nuts or you really are in your element here."
“He was dusting portraits and is serving lunch. He's hardly qualified to determine if I'm Neo and that I will save the Matrix."
“Good point Chosen One. You'll end up clipping the grass for sure."
“Why are you here anyway? You told me to spend time with people my age. Don't you have hot shot teacher parties or something to attend?"
“I'm the youngest member of the faculty. Sad thing is you're closer to my age than they are. I'd have to go into town to follow my own advice."
“So here you stand chatting to your 'jail bait' because you're too young for them?"
“I can always leave you know. If you'd rather sulk in your room."
“No, I can sulk here."
“That's the spirit. I have another book for you if you want it. I know there isn't much time to study it. But it could help get you out of some of the more basic classes."
“How much time do I have?"
“A couple of days, maybe more. The schedule is set by the Headmaster each morning before breakfast. I better get to it then Morpheus. Lead the way."
He gave me a nudge and walked with me back into the main building.
“You'll get your course books once your classes are set. School provides everything. If you have the knack for it you'll be able to master some of this book in time. It'll get you out of the basic energy manipulation class and put you on course to maybe, maybe, get into Josiah's."
I looked at the plain looking book before taking it from him.
“My first spell book. I shall treasure this."
“Magic is more complex than that. But you'll figure that out."
I jumped forward and gave him a tight hug. Which he semi returned before firmly pushing me away.
“Always with you the no touchy."
“You aren't very good with rules. Better change that, get kicked out and you'll never see me again."
“Damn it, I still haven't looked at that book. Is it all the usual stuff? No vandalism, fighting, so on and so forth?"
“Among other things. No abusing magic, no attacking students or staff. It also lists the dress code, schedules for terms and events. Relax, if you weren't kicked out of human school I doubt you'll be thrown out of this place. Unless you start really screwing up anyway."
I was on my way back to the dorms for the second time since eating lunch. Not quite sure why he was being so helpful all the sudden. I sighed, fighting the urge to start talking to myself. I couldn't help it and him being so confusing really didn't make it easy.
I opened the door to my room and sprawled out across the floor. Looking up at the ceiling briefly before I raised the book. How much of this did I have to get through? I flipped to the end, just over 200 pages. Damn you Sam, why couldn't you just tell me how much to do?
With a sigh I turned back to the front of the book and started to get to it. To say it was dull was an understatement. I just kept hoping that I had more than a couple days to work this out. The pamphlet I got all those years ago just talked about focusing energy to build up your reserves. This was on another level. I needed more time.
The next part shouldn't take a whole lot of time to finish up. I already have most of the first part of it done and I know where I want to go with it. Sorry there wasn't any sex, minor character so out of the question on that one. Worry not though, time skips are planned so there will be naughty bits.
