Sequence 1 Merge 4, Super Predator Marlot, Wolf “Stay on her,” Marlot said, turning into a side alley, running along the wall to avoid losing his momentum. “I’m going to cut her off.” He ran the numbers, super imposing the city’s map over the probability matrix based on everything he’d learned about the female he and Trembor were chasing. His programs had narrowed the possibilities for the killer to six people, based on then, how the body had been killed and where it had been left. The damage made it clear the killer had been one of the enhanced people who had become numerous over the last sixty years, like him and his lover. There were no list of people with powers, but when someone could hack the tax registry the way he could, it was easy to build profiles based on the kind of people they preyed on and extrapolate that was needed to take them down. His program only had an eighty-two point six percent accuracy, but that, added to Trembor’s skill at tracking evidence on the ground, gave them a nearly ninety-three percent closing rate on the bodies they investigated. Now that he’d seen the jaguar, he had a name. Nadia Spotblack, owner of an athletic’s good store, her productivity rating placed her well outside his and Trembor’s budget, but this wasn’t about the kill, or at least killing her. This was about bringing her to justice so she’d pay for her kill. He kicked off the wall to adjust his angle and take the next turn tighter, so he would— She ran past him. His calculations needed refining. They always did when applying them to people. So many variable. But, he was much closer, enough to…. He threw himself on her back, swinging his legs around to unbalance her, then let go as she fell. The red glow on her claws confirmed a heat related power, which matched the cauterized wounds on the body. He tucked into a ball, causing her to miss, and rolled on the ground, then was on his feet. “Heat claws,” he called to the lion reaching them. “Well above the five hundred degrees, so be careful.” “You’re the one who isn’t invulnerable,” Trembor replied. Marlot grinned. “But I have the numbers on my side. She can’t hurt me if she can’t touch me.” Probabilities bloomed around her, telling him the most likely way she’d attack, which he prepared himself for, while being ready for one of the slightly less likely possibilities. People didn’t always follow the numbers. He dodged, stepped back, put a foot on the wall and launched himself over her, forcing her to turn and face Trembor, his mass of a lion. He blocked, and her claws burned through the jacket’s sleeve, and the smell of burned fur emanated. “Surrender,” Trembor ordered. “Do not make this any harder on you than it already is. All that will happen is that you will be charged for the body you killed.” “He deserved it,” she snarled, bright red claws slashing left and right, cutting more of Marlot’s lion’s jacket and fur, as well as the top layer of skin, because Trembor’s body was dense to the point of being nearly indestructible, as well as strong beyond belief. Marlot ran at her, the numbers in his favor with her distracted, only for them to shift as she noticed him and the claws came close enough to his face he felt the heat radiating off them. He slid on the ground, stones cutting his pants and skin, and he kicked her legs out from under her. Trembor had his arms around her before she was up. “Stop resisting.” She grabbed his arm; the claws causing the fabric, fur and skin to smoke. “This is why he told you to stop,” Marlot said. Pulling her attention to him in time for his fist to impact the side of her head and she went limp. “Why is it every enhanced we have to chase thinks they can take you on? You’re the Golden Maned. Everyone knows you can’t be hurt.” Trembor chuckled. “I can be hurt. Simply not easily.” He fished her wallet and lobbed it at Marlot. He scanned her ID. “Confirming this is Nadia Spotblack, mated to the body’s sister. Probable reason is that he assaulted her mate. From her comment, she intended to kill him.” “He wasn’t enhanced, so she had all the advantage.” “She didn’t intend to make it so quick, so he surprised her in some way.” He placed the call. “Central, we have an enhanced tax evader. We need a carrier able to withstand Heat Claws, possibly other heat related abilities. I can’t confirm the upper range.” He nodded and disconnected. “They’ll have a carrier here in ten. Then we can go home and look after your injuries.” “Yours. Mine are only skin deep.” * * * * * Marlot’s back hit the concrete wall, but he barely felt it, legs around Trembor’s waist as he was fucked the way he loved it. Hard. He’d already cum twice, and by the force of his lover’s thrust, he was about to— Trembor roared, and Marlot’s back scraped against the wall. Fortunately, while his enhancement was mostly mental, like everyone from his hometown, he also had some physical aspects. Nothing to make him one of the physically enhanced, but he could take his back being scrapped along the mostly even surface of a concrete wall. Unlike the wooden shards their first night of lovemaking had given him when they’d crashed through the wall and fell outside. Trembor panted, licking Marlot’s muzzle. “I needed this.” He chuckled and kissed his mate and lover. “The side effect I love when you push yourself. You get all hot and bothered and horny.” “Us Goldenmanes are virile. You’ve met my family.” Marlot laughed. “Yes, and all the cubs who held me hostage. For a family dedicated to keeping the city safe, those cubs are monsters that you should be protecting me from.” “It’s how they show they like you.” “There was talk of a cauldron, and the best way to remove my fur.” “That’s Drerik. He can digest anything.” “You need to tell him that doesn’t put me on the menu.” “Are you telling me you can’t out think a cub?” “Cubs at the antithesis of my numbers. They are chaos incarnate. It’s like they know the probabilities and act against them.” Trembor straightened, keeping Marlot against him. “You are safe for another two weeks. Then it’s the family dinner.” He carried him to the shower, where they had sex again, and then washed, dried, and went to bed. Where sex happened again, and Marlot slept the sleep of the exhausted and sated. * * * * * “We have—” the antelope in the law enforcement uniform started. “Mutilated lupine,” Marlot finished. “About two third of a body left behind.” “Yes…. How did you—are you one of the enhanced mind reader?” “No, I’ve just been expecting this body to show up. We’ve had two similar to it within ten blocks.” He left the officer behind as he joined the lion crouched by the body. “Like the other two,” Trembor said, “it was cut with precision. I expect Jax is going to confirm this one also has even cuts, cauterized as they happened.” “Same height, relatively same body mass. With this one, our killed now has enough to make themselves their very own monster. Any sign this one is enhanced?” “No ID, like the other two. No visible sign of enhancement. If that was the reason, I’d expect the entire body to be taken. There’s no way cutting the brain the way these have been done leaves anything workable.” The lion considered something. “Do you have any enhanced on that list you built able to do something with body parts?” “No. Movies and books are the closest we come to people making unliving bodies. But I have a few on it who can do odd things with technology, so someone with an organic version isn’t out of the possibility.” “Get out of the way!” a male yelled. “Can’t you see my color? I’m not red because I’m inviting you for a hug.” The crowd parted, and a bright red frog pulled a gurney in their direction. Those who hadn’t moved quickly enough were retching. Trembor hurried away from the body, while Marlot took his time. Jax’s aura only reached a foot and a half around him. Like nearly all red frogs, he was enhanced with a poisonous aura that made people sick, and could kill if exposed to it for too long. Even Trembor wasn’t immune, as he’d discovered the first time Jax had worked with them Considering that the origin of enhanced people had been traced to experiments farming towns had conducted in an attempt to increase production to keep up with a boom in city herbivores barely a century before, the fact that every red frog had a variation of that aura, while also being immune to it, baffled those who researched the enhanced. Trembor’s family was easier to explain since they could trace the first of them to be enhanced to that time. The oddity with them was that every family member was enhanced in a different way, whereas everywhere else, enhancements didn’t follow bloodlines. Marlot was different in another way. His hometown was where the experiments had originated, so the farmers ate the altered vegetables in larger quantities, then, when they retired and walked into the processing center, their meat, which had been altered, was distributed to the predators who looked after them. The result was that everyone there was enhanced. And horny. That was a lesser known effect. Enhanced had an increased sex drive. It had been enough of a problem back then, according to his grandfather, that the town council had had no choice but abandon the narrow mindset that males could only have sex with females. The population had already increased almost to the point they couldn’t support them. So, male sated themselves with whoever they wanted, so long as no cubs came. Fortunately, cross species breeding hadn’t been something the enhanced could do. And males enjoyed each other as well. There was still a tendency for families to be too large, as his was, so the eldest were encouraged to seek the cities as their hunting grounds. Which was what had brought Marlot here and allowed him to meet Trembor. “I’m leaving this here,” the frog said, shoving the gurney close to the body. “You two put it on, then you take it to my vehicle. I’m not dealing with this uneven terrain.” “Where’s your son?” Marlot asked. “Where do you think? At one of the clubs that caters to folks like us. Back in my day, we didn’t need places like that. There was enough in the extended family to take care of those needs. And no need for suits to keep from poisoning our partner.” “Times are changing,” Trembor said. “It’s a truth of the world.” “Yeah, well, it could have waited until he left the clutch so I wouldn’t have to deal with his oddities.” He walked off, and this time the crowd hurried to get out of his way. Marlot took the bag off the gurney and opened it. They put the body in it, it closed, and back on it went. “The scene is ready for inspection,” Trembor took the officer, a female boar. “Understood. The team’s ready. You’ll have the result before the day is over.” “Tell them I’d rather they take their time,” Marlot said. “Good data is preferable over fast data. It’s not like we’re filing this body away anytime soon,” “You’re usually more optimistic,” Trembor said. “I usually have more to go on. The only commonality with them are that they are lupines, but not even with similar coloring. No ID, no one with the matching fur reported missing. You canvased the ten blocks, and no one recognized either of the previous two bodies.” “The second one, being separated, wasn’t going to produce results.” “Yes, well, without points of commonality, I can’t put the numbers in order. I can’t even work out why this area. There’s nothing unusual about it. It’s the normal mix of industrial, warehousing, commercial, with housing at the edge. There are places like this in every city, and a few in a city this large. If there was an inter-city hub, that would be something to go on, but that’s on the other side.” “Almost like they took the males as far from that as they could,” Trembor said. “Why? It would take someone with my kind of enhancement to do that, because everyone else would just figure that a couple of blocks would be enough.” “There are others with similar enhancements to you.” “Yeah, and I know them. I love you, but we can’t have the kind of conversations me and the minds can.” “So long as you don’t have sex with them, you can talk about whatever you want.” “I thought you lions didn’t do possessiveness,” Jax said, a dozen feet away from his car. “We are very possessive. Some of us simply have enough possessiveness for multiple mates.” Trembor pulled Marlot to him. “I only have enough for my one lover.” “And I have no need to seek someone else.” “Just don’t start that here. I swear, they no longer teach self control anymore.” Trembor moved them away. “When will you have the preliminary report?” “I can give it to you now. Nothing to say. No evidence left behind. No idea what tool was used to make the incisions. But I’ll contact you tomorrow to make that official.” “Have a good day, Jax.” Marlot looked at Trembor. “Back to this office to…file this?” The lion squeezed the wolf’s ass. “Oh, I’ll file something in, alright.”
