We have finally arrived at the fifth step of character introductions! With my patrons on Patreon putting the final touches to the various cast of characters, I'd like to take this time to introduce you to the two Mystics of the stories-- one for SF and one for FA:

Lehig and Lor the two-headed Orthrus will be the Mystic of the Feyrahlian Empire on SF and Gregor the Manticore will be the Mystic of the Feyrahl Empire on FA. As a reminder, each story will be self-contained and neither affect not be affected by the other; they are two completely separate tales!

The next step will include the proper story introduction, which will start with both Humans finding their way to Feyrahl, and their initial introduction to the denizens of the strange world. Stay tuned!

Feyrahl - The Mystics (SF), Lehig and Lor the Mystics of Feyrahl

Rarely seen by any of the common folk of the Feyrahlian Empire, the Emperor's Mystic is an enigma to everyone but the Emperor, his court, and a few select noble houses. Almost as rare as Humans in Feyrahl are the Mythics, a select few races that are either extinct, or so close to it that they are not encountered by many during activities of daily life. The Empire's Mystic is an Orthrus, a two-headed dog with a reptilian tail that ends with the head of a snake. Having two heads, the Mystic also has two distinct personalities; Lehig and Lor, the left and right head respectively, refer to one another as brothers.

They stand 7'3" (221 cm) in height and, weigh just shy of 290 lbs (131 kg). Lean and wiry, the Orthrus has a solid build with a hint of padding on it due to their sedentary, scholarly lifestyle. Although the Mystics appear to be somewhere in their mid-to-late 30s, it is a well-known fact among the council that they were advising the father of Emperor Caldif (the First), who is the current Emperor's Grandfather. Exactly how far back their service to the Empire goes is anyone's guess but, in the past, when pressed, they have explained that they served Crown for over a century before becoming the chief Mystic toward the end of Caldir the First's father's reign.

Lehig and Lor resemble a humanoid, two-headed Rottweiler with a snake for a tail. Like a Rottweiler, their fur color is a combination of tan and black; their black fur casts a faintly bluish sheen in bright light. Lehig has a pure black right eye and a mahogany left eye; Lor has a mahogany right eye and a pure black left eye. Both heads' black eyes have an eerie yellow border separating their iris from their pupil, which have a reptilian, slit-shape. Their mouths are also different from a normal canine's; their tongues are dark purple and their teeth are jet black. Their serpent-like tail has scales as black as their fur, except along its underside, which is tan. The brothers refer to their tail as "Zaph", and treat it as a familiar. Zaph has mahogany brown eyes with pupils more befitting a canine than a serpent.

The Orthrus has an eclectic clothing selection, most representing a combination of two styles cut down the center and sewed together so that each head can showcase his preferred fashion-- the fact that each head operates the limbs on the opposite side of their shared body means that Lehig's scholastic preference of plain robes and simple smocks adorn the right side while Lor's much more ostentatious and gaudy, airy pantaloons and vests cover the left. When presented before the court, however, they relent to the Emperor's wishes and wear the robes of their station. Lehig prefers to avoid any trinkets or jewelry except for a single ring on his right middle finger; Lor wears an every-changing array of baubles-- however much he can put on in the morning before his brother tires of his preening.

Little is known about the Mystic's lineage since, as a Mythic creature, he is incredibly long lived and has no apparent relatives still alive. Few bother poking into their past, and they do not volunteer such information freely; the fact that no one in the Empire has ever admitted to seeing any other Orthrus means that Lehig and Lor likely have no living family. They have taken many lovers during their time in service to the Empire-- sometimes each head has a different lover and sometimes they share, but, as of present, their 'dalliances' have never resulted in any offspring. Although the Orthrus has no known kin and no official house recognizes them, the Emperor has deemed the Mystic to be a noble, and has granted them both titles and land, which they rarely if ever visit.

One might presume that the Mystic, having two heads, would be a very confusing conversationalist, especially if both heads were trying to talk at the same time. Fortunately, despite sharing a body, Lehig and Lor have dramatically different life outlooks, interests, and preferences. While Lehig is obsessed with the study of magic and the advancement of thaumaturgical pursuits, Lor is much more laid back and relaxed, Free-Spirited, with an an interest in learning a little bit of everything and experiencing as much of life as he can force his brother to get out of the library. As such, having a conversation with the Orthrus is little different from carrying on a discussion with two brothers with vastly varied viewpoints. If anything, once a discussion starts, it can be very difficult to get the two heads to start (presuming someone can get Lehig's attention off of study).

Although Lehig and Lor have two personalities, they both share the same Elemental Affinity; the Feyrahlian's Mystic has great prowess when it comes to Water Magic, especially Illusion, but, in recent decades, they have begun focusing more extensively on understanding the Flow aspect in hopes that they might be able to help reduce the likelihood of the prophasized disaster destroying everything should it take the form of a tsunami or flood. Lehig's extensive study of various forms of catastrophic elemental disasters has also given him some minor talent with Earth magic (Stone aspect, specifically), while the free-spirited Lor chose to study the Movement aspect of Air magic.

Despite the great amount of verve still left in the Orthrus, he still suffers from a well-known affliction that is known to show among Mythics from time-to-time. A condition known as 'Fading' has started begin more and more noticeable as the years go by; unlike the more mundane Feyrahlians, Mythics aren't known to die of old age-- those who live for 'too long' (an amount of time not well measured) simply begin to slowly disappear. While Lehig and Lor still appear to be in the early stages of this, they have some good days and some bad, and witnessing them at their worst can be frightening as they seem more specter than solid. Due to the rarity of Mythics little if anything is known about the phenomenon, let alone how to stop it. Having lived many times longer than others around them, the brothers are resigned to their fate, and don't seem to be as concerned about it happening as those around them.

As far as a potential love interest (or love interests), Lehig and Lor can be very complicated to woo jointly. Both heads have their individual likes and dislikes and they are not always in agreement; this can lead to some humorous (and/or frustrating) situations. The brothers are flexible and understanding enough to not get in the other's way if only one head likes Mac. While it is possible to be held in a positive opinion by both heads, managing to have a meaningful relationship with both will require a lot of balancing, forethought, and investment of time but, at some point, if both heads come to appreciate him, Mac will not only be on the path toward being accepted by both of the Orthrus' heads and Zaph might also show itself to be more than just a mysterious, silent "body accessory". If that turns out to be the case, Mac might just be on his way to the trifecta of a relationship with all three of the Orthrus' personalities.

Lehig will refer to Mac as "Pest" if he actively dislikes him.

Lor will refer to Mac with a different wrong name each time if he actively dislikes him.

Lehig will refer to Mac as "Homidine" if he doesn't like him.

Lor will refer to Mac as "Human" if he doesn't like him.

Lehig will respond to Mac as "Mr Millman" if he is only willing to put up with him.

Lor will respond to Mac as "Millman" if he is only willing to put up with him.

Lehig will respond to Mac as "Mr MacKenzie" if he tolerates him.

Lor will respond to Mac as "MacKenzie" if he tolerates him.

Lehig will respond to Mac as "MacKenzie" if he views him neutrally.

Lor will respond to Mac as "Mac" if he views him neutrally.

If Lehig regards Mac positively he will refer to him as "Neonate".

If Lor regards Mac positively he will refer to him as "Initiate".

If Lehig and Lor regard Mac Positively Zaph will refer to him as "Monkey".

Lehig will respond to Mac as "Apprentice" if he appreciates him.

Lor will respond to Mac as "Apprentice" if he appreciates him.

Zaph will respond to Mac as "Human" if Lehig and Lor appreciate him.

Lehig will call Mac "Magus" if he likes him.

Lor will call Mac "Magus" if he likes him.

Zaph will call Mac "Mackenzie" if Lehig and Lor like him.

Lehig will go back to calling Mac "Mac" if he regards him affectionately.

Lor will go back to calling Mac "Mac" if he regards him affectionately.

Zaph will refer to Mac as "Mac" if it regards him affectionately.

If Lehig sees Mac as a potential lover, he will refer to him as "Master".

If Lor sees Mac as a potential lover, he will refer to him as "Rune".

If Zaph sees Mac as a potential lover, it will refer to him as "Morsel".

Feyrahl - The Mystic (FA), Dark Gregor, Mystic of Feyrahl

Shortly before the last Emperor's death, the Feyrahlian Empire lost its High Mystic and her apprentice in a freak magical accident. Baldwin's father, a particularly wily and shrewd Bat, took on the services of a well-bred, well-mannered Manticore named Gregor. Manticores are an incredibly uncommon breed among almost impossible to find breeds-- species known as Mythics, who are as rare as Humans. Gregor is an impressive creature; most of his body is Leonine, though he has large, bat-like wings and a scorpion stinger for a tail. He stands a respectable 7'5" (226 cm) tall and his large body is easily 330 lbs (150 kg) in weight and appears to be in his early-to-mid 40s. Although his wings have a massive span, he is unable to fly without the aid of Air Magic.

Among Feyrahlians, Gregor is known to have a "rock lion" color, which is to say that his fur is jet-black. His large, leathery bat wings are a rich, dark-chocolate brown, and his eyes are a piercing ruby that eerily lack pupils. The Manticore's stinger is a deep red that eerily shines whitish-blue under the moonlight. The Mystic prefers to keep his wings unencumbered so he wears open-back robes when in the library and court or a leather cross-harnesses and a sarong when traveling; in either case, he is known to wrap his wings about his shoulders as though they were a cloak. He is also devoid of any real sense of modesty and will spend his casual time in nothing more than a loincloth, and somehow manages to make guests feel overdressed rather than give off the impression that he is under-dressed. No matter how he is dressed otherwise, Gregor wears a black leather choker inscribed with the insignia of the royal house, identifying him as having been oath bound to the royal family.

The specifics of Gregor's family is lost to the ages, but some records remain indicating that he is of a noble lineage; due to his service to the royal family most are willing to consider that proof enough, and so he is given at least the functionary title of Baron despite not having an acknowledged holding. Gregor claims to have had a brother and a sister but he often claims that, among Manticores, only one child grows up to adulthood as they must slay any siblings to prove their worth. Such claims are usually spoken with seeming jest, and the majority of those present during such stories nervously laugh at the apparent humor-- others say nothing since there are many reasons to suggest that the Mystic is NOT joking.

As a man of cultured upbringing, Gregor can be quite charming superficially, but there is a certain air about him that gives most the impression that it is all a skillfully crafted mask to wear in social situations; the majority of the court fears getting too close to him, or gaining too much of his attention. Although all of his mannerisms point toward open honesty and candid good-natured interaction, most find his eerie eyes to be off-putting, if not downright frightening, and his strange humor can further distance those of sensitive humors. This off-putting aura has earned him the honorific of "Dark", this most call the Mystic "Dark Gregor"-- just not to his face.

In truth, Gregor has been blind most of his life. His extensive of magic allows the Manticore to operate almost perfectly without his sight, however, utilizing a wide array of spells across a vast spread of elements and affinities. Attuned to the Spirit Element, there is no opposite element for him, meaning Gregor has a great capacity for diverse magic. Combining spells that allow him to sense vibrations through the earth and changes in air pressure, the Manticore can maintain a very clear 'view' of the world around him, so very few actually realize that he is so blind that the world is otherwise a gray fog with faint shades of luminosity to him. Further, the majority of people who find Gregor disconcerting without knowing why are responding to his natural affinity for Necromancy, which the Manticore doesn't go out of his way to hide, but he is courteous enough to the Emperor not to exactly advertise it.

While the Mystic can be incredibly charming and gracious, he tends to be superficial in his interactions and has a hard time letting anyone get close. As a Mystic, he is exceedingly long-lived and tends to find it easier keeping friends as acquaintances and potential close friends as causal chums. He has been hurt in the past by the repeated loss of loved ones, and believes that he's better served making a positive impression in the eyes of others and keep them at a distance that is easier to manage-- a lot of his more idiosyncratic off-putting traits are meant to help reinforce this. Still, if Kenzie does manage to push past his initial hesitance, Gregor has the capacity to be a powerfully intense courtly romance.

As far as a potential love interest, Gregor is not easy to read as he combines playful teasing and reverse disinterest in a way that could make the most ardent prospective paramour uncertain as to where they stand in his eyes. First, getting him to open up, Kenzie will have more luck getting to know the real Manticore. Managing to uncover more of his secrets and things about him he does not share with just anyone will improve familiarity, which will, in turn, help Gregor lower his walls and let her in; the moment he calls her by name without honorific she's most of the way there. If she can manage to make her interest known without having him retreat or raise his emotional defenses then Gregor will let her know in no uncertain terms that he wants her, and he wants her to want him. Once things get physical, he will need her to be his, and won't do without her for as long as she lives; he is not a man of half-measures and does not do one-night stands.

Gregor will refer to Kenzie as "Little Mouse" if he actively dislikes her.

Gregor will call Kenzie "Little Bird" if he doesn't like her.

Gregor will respond to Kenzie as "Young Lady" he only puts up with her.

Gregor will respond to Kenzie as "Miss" without using her name if he only tolerates her.

Gregor will respond to Kenzie by calling her "My Lady" if he considers her neutrally.

Gregor will call Kenzie "Lady Fuller" if he regards her positively.

Gregor will finally start calling MacKenzie "Lady MacKenzie" once he appreciates her.

If Gregor likes Kenzie he will drop the honorific and just call her "Kenzie".

If Gregor starts regarding Kenzie affectionately he will call her "My Lamb".

Should Gregor see Kenzie as a potential lover he may start referring to her as "Moonlight".
