Together Forever - Chapter 4
Mental exhaustion and deep anguish must have gotten the better of me, for I awoke to Elise's face hovering above me in the doorway."Come on, Jewel," she said, helping me to my feet."Don't leave me, again," I mumbled, stumbling after her."I'm not leaving you, Jewel," she replied. "If anything, you're leaving me.""Then don't make me go back. What if nothing changes? What if you're still gone?""I won't be.""Are you going to destroy it?""No."I stopped in my tracks."Then I'm not leaving.""Julie, don't be ridiculous. We're pressed for time. Who knows how we are changing the flow of time just by standing here? We need to send you back and I can tie up all of the loose ends here.""No," I said sharply, my heart beating faster as I felt panic begin to set in. "I've gone too long without you. Your obsession with this vile thing is what took you away from me in the first place and now you want to put me back inside of it and NOT destroy it!?" Is this really how it is, Elise? Your Nobel prize means more to you than your own life?"A determined look crossed Elise's face and she grabbed my arms, forcing me inside the Connector. The door sealed shut behind me."Elise!" I shrieked, tears running freely down my face. "Elise! Don't do this! Don't leave me again! Please! Don't leave me!"The machine hummed and whirred to life. I snarled and scratched my claws down the glass, but to no avail. I knew Elise's craftsmanship was too intricate to be cracked by the force of frantically scratching claws.Resigned to my fate, I at least attempted to meet her eyes, but she immersed herself in the controls."Elise!" I bellowed desperately.I saw her
head turn toward me and I swore I saw a tear run down her cheek. Then the lights blinded me.
