Sovereignty of Synthetics Prologue
#1 of Sovereignty of Synthetics
The prologue to my current writing project. Taking place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world full of mammalian animal people. This section recounts the events of one location during the apocalyptic cataclysm, later people will refer to the event as the end.
Prologue: The End.
"Do you think he suspected us?" a young man said in a hushed tone, his hands trembling as he wiped the blood from his visor. "Does it really matter at this point?" replied one of the many masked men around him. "It has begun, brother, and we have him right where we want him."
"He's still a capable fighter and if Brother Nel didn't kill him he'll come after us next, and if we fail-."
"We cannot fail. Father Tar has foreseen this." Another voice chimed in. "He shall fall, and along with him the rest of this evil organization."
"He is another lock on the gates of heaven, and we are the key. All shall perish and we righteous will be seated on the right hand of god." A tall masked bovine woman made her way to the front of the group and readied her gun at her hip, facing the thick metal vault-like door. "In our last moments let us pray for-" The rest of the group did not get to hear what she thought they should pray for before the solid door blew out off its hinges in an caustic spray of melting flesh and crushed her skull, but they wouldn't have had much time to pray anyway.
"Thank you for having me Nel'fin" The impressive wolf said as he entered the windowless steel office. Everyone in the room stood at attention. "You two are dismissed, give us some privacy please." He said to the guards at the door, they curtsied and stepped out. "Mind if I take a seat?" the wolf did not wait for a response before sitting at the desk. The aged rabbit on the other side of the desk stood at attention and grabbed the corner of his jacket and curtsied before taking a seat. "Always a pleasure Bok'narell Va'arseen" he said with a wheeze.
"No need for full names Nel'fin, I think we know each other well enough for short names."
"If it's all the same to you I'll keep calling you Bok'narell Va'arseen."
"Well then should I call you by your long name as well, Nel'fin Za-eez? Or are you gonna pull that stick out of your ass?"
"You can call me whatever you want, you're my superior. I just don't feel you know me well enough for me to use a short name for you."
"Interesting choice of words." Said a young weasel girl as she stepped into the room. Nel'fin looked at her with a wide smile, although his eyes expressed emotion less pleasant than his grin would suggest.
"I trust it's not a problem that I dragged D'ar Zho along?"
"Of course not, your daughter is always welcome. What makes my word choice interesting, D'ar Zho?"
"Well the way you said it suggests that you know him better than he knows you." she shrugged and began to noodle around with her little tablet as she continued. "Which tells me either you've been keeping secrets from him, investigating him, think he's an idiot, or some combination of the three. Either way it says you don't trust him." The frank statement hung in the air with an awkward silence. Bok'narell leaned forward with a serious look in his eyes. "So which is it Nel'fin Za-eez?" Nel'fin looked deep into Bok'narell's eyes with a stone-faced demeanor. After a moment Bok'narell burst into laughter and D'ar Zho chuckled as well, but Nel'fin remained emotionless. "You need to lighten up, Nel'fin and learn to take a joke!"
"Is that why you came here today, sir? To 'joke' with me?"
"What's with all this 'sir' shit, Nel'fin? Relax for god's sake, this isn't a business visit. I was just in town, and thought I would drop in and see how things were doing here."
"Things are fine I suppose. Didn't expect to see you here, though."
"Oh?"
"Figured you'd be at the presidential debates, hoping really."
"Why's that?"
"It just seemed to be a much more important duty, sir."
"Duty?! Not everything is about duties and responsibilities, Nel'fin! This isn't the goddamn military, it's an organized crime syndicate for fuck's sake! Just-... just relax for just a full minute in your entire life."
"Sir I'm very busy, and right now all you're doing is interrupting work flow here."
"Well perhaps it wouldn't be an interruption of work flow if you knew how to delegate properly." Bok'narell scowled. "This was supposed to be a simple relaxing check-in visit, but seeing as you're dead set on being in a bad mood you might as well be in a bad mood for a good reason." He rooted around in his pocket and pulled out a small cube and set it on the desk. "I was going to shuffle this task off to someone else, but you insisted on keeping things business." the cube blinked a couple times and began to project a set of charts above the desk. "these are the numbers you've been reporting for the last few months, are they not?" Nel'fin bit his lip and nodded.
"Well I have a bit of a problem with these numbers. Do you know what it is?"
"No, sir."
"Well I did a bit of a data probe on these numbers and, well, this..." a separate set of charts popped up. "is what they should look like." Nel'fin pointed at the first set of charts. "Those are the numbers that my men have been bringing in to me."
"But it's not the numbers they've been pulling off the streets, you moron!"
"But sir-"
"But nothing! This is an unacceptable discrepancy, Nel'fin! I can understand a little skimming, it's expected, but this is out of hand. You need to get your subordinates under control."
"Well none of them are living above their worth so-." "Oh I checked into that as well. Turns out almost all of them are sending money to various dummy companies that all lead back to-" a graphic displaying the money flow unfolded. "Tar'an Din's campaign fund. Now tell me again why you wanted me to be at the debates, when it appears to be you and your men who are so concerned with the election."
"Because-..." Nel'fin began to cough heavily, doubling over in his seat. Bok'narell stood up quickly and poured a glass of water for Nel'fin.
"Here, drink." he stepped up to Nel'fin with the glass. Suddenly D'ar Zho looked up from her tablet and began to shout. "Contingency 37a! Disconnect from the web, Bok, the PCOFK is making a move!" D'ar Zho's form-fitting jump-suit appeared to unravel into an elegant overcoat with a large petticoat as she pulled the door shut, spinning the lock around as quickly as possible. As Bok'narell looked up at her Nel'Fin produced a vial of toxic liquid and threw it into Bok'narell's face. He fell back in a fit of vomit and alarms began to blare throughout the underground complex, along with the dull pop of gunshots from petticoat's standard issue submachine guns just behind the heavy door. The weighty hatch served as the only bulwark against the lead hail of belligerents exchanging fire. "If you had been at the debates you could have had the honor of dying in the presence of the father!" Nel'fin stood up and stepped on Bok'narell's chest as he gasped for air. D'ar Zho pulled on her gas mask and grabbed at the daggers on her hips. She sent a bolt of lightning down her daggers towards Nel'fin, shattering the desk in front of him when suddenly the lights went out. In the darkness a stampede of footsteps emanated from where D'ar Zho was standing in all directions around Nel'fin. He stood his ground and began to shout into the darkness. "Give it up little girl. He's already dead."
"What have you done?" voices whispered from all around him.
"I have done what father has taught me to do, use the beast's own weapons to slay god's enemies."
"Your mad cult is-."
"We are not a cult! We are the truth!" His ears trembled as he glanced around in the darkness. "If you could only see what I have seen and feel what I have felt you would know how your automation of life hurts god."
"Is that so?"
"Yes it is dear girl, The People's Church of the Forgotten Knowledge has taught me much. Not that a monster like you and your ilk could ever repent." Emergency lights finally kicked on and filled the room with a deep crimson hue. What appeared to be Three copies of D'ar Zho circled around Nel'fin, all primed for combat. He grinned widely at the sight of her. "He's an evil man, especially for what he did to you." Nel'fin spoke though his teeth and spun around, looking from one to the next nervously.
"Oh? Why are you smiling?" The fur on all the D'ar Zho doppelgangers began to waver and change color. Lightning, frost and clear liquids began arcing and dripping from her paw pads and down her daggers. "Grinning suppresses the gag reflex."
"Do I really disgust you that much?"
"He made a mutated abomination out of his own daughter of course you-."
"He's not my father, he's my great-great-grandson." Suddenly all three of them lunged forward. Bok'narell mustered the strength to grab a hold of Nel'fin's leg to stop him from making a move. Two blunt acid-covered blades caught him in the gut; he could feel the weasel's energy pouring into his stomach, and his muscles stiffened quickly. "T-the petticoats have st-still fallen." He spoke through clenched teeth as the last of his muscles completely locked up. The two holograms behind him slowly faded.
"No." She stared into his eyes, relishing the agony and panic they expressed. "I had planned for this ... Did you never wonder why there was such a concentration of your 'brothers and sisters' at this branch, Nel'fin? The petticoats shall purge your backwards cult from their ranks and we will live on, digging ourselves out from under the ashes of the destroyed world you create." Pressing forward she shoved Nel'fin against the door. She continued to push her daggers into his stomach. Even after the acid weakened his belly to the point that the blunt knives plunged through the abdomen, spilling his entrails on the ground, she continued to press into him. "You tried to bushwhack professional bushwhackers, kid. I've had tabs kept on your whole idiotic clique ever since it was just a room full of buffoons being fooled by a charismatic madman in his basement. Major governments may have passed you off as harmless zealots, but I saw through your ruse and prepared for what I knew you where capable of, and this world will survive as a result." When her stilettos hit the bone of his spine she pulled back. "you however, have only about a minute before the about 20 mega joules of energy I've stored in your body releases out your back and makes you a smudge in this once fine facility."
"M-mistress." Bok'narell groaned as she gently walked up to him, pulling off her gas mask.
"Oh my dear boy, you did so well." He let out gratifying sigh as she used a rag to clean the tears and puke from his trembling muzzle. "I had hoped you could have survived this whole ordeal."
"You n-never told m-me wh-who you-... wh-ho y-ou."
"shh... I know, sweetie, I know. Just trust me when I say it had to be this way."
"I kn-knew though." He reached into his blouse and pulled out a locket with a time-faded picture of the unaging weasel sitting over him. "Grampa Ido used t-to talk about his-s grandmother M-misi Mitzi." She sighed and looked away.
"Mostly bad things I suspect. I wasn't a very good grandparent, or even parent for that matter."
"H-He said yo-u would pretend t-to be hi-is cousin and go t-to school with him." He chuckled slightly which caused him to retch again. "I'm so sorry you had to suffer this fate, Bok."
"It h-has been my honor s-serving y-you mistress."
"Let me ease your pain, Bok." She tenderly placed a hand over his heart.
"T-thank you gramma Misi." He clutched her hand tightly and smiled. She nodded and a jolt of electricity ran down her arm and stopped Bok'narell's heart, instantly killing him. She somberly stood back up and pulled on her gas mask. She faced Ne'fin, who would have been screaming if he still had the ability to. She readied herself for a sprint and looked him in the eyes as the reaction she started in him went into its final stages. She stared into his eyes one last time and spoke her farewell. "Viszlàt." She began to charge towards him when suddenly his back tore open with such force that the hefty door blew of its hinges, and his skin flew past Misi Mitzi making a sloshing splatter noise on the wall behind her. She gracefully vaulted over the door sending hoary bolts of ice in all directions as she did. Several icicles merely shattered against the walls, but many more caught the men and women standing in the doorway with force enough to shatter bones and rupture skin. The sheer force of her attacks caught everyone off guard and they didn't have time to react before she ducked behind cover. Bullets began to fly in her direction and started to eat away at the steel table she was ducked behind. One of the men in the thick was shouting orders and the others where closing around her. In a brief moment of no fire she hopped up and struck the leader in the chest with a bolt of lightning and ran for the door; the lightning burned through his chest, and he fell back as his exposed, cooked, heart ceased to beat. Bullets began to find their targets though and Misi Mitzi was struck in the shoulder and shins, each bullet causing a caustic gout of fire and acid as they sunk into her muscles. Each hit made her more and more furious, and she released bolt after bolt of frost and acid over her shoulder and at everyone in front of her, shattering some men like glass, and others she would melt, clothes and all, as she ran for the exit. When she got outside the cold winter air hit her lungs with a sharp pain. She spun on her heels and released a volley of fire and lightning at the entrance of the underground base, collapsing it and trapping all inside. The adrenaline in her blood began to subside and she collapsed on the ground. Her petticoat and jacket rolled back up into her form-fitting jumpsuit as she stared into the sky. Electricity arced from her wounds into the flash-freezing ground, her mutations were getting too out of control. At least t_his world will survive_ she thought to herself as she watched the sky twinkle and light up with the fire of multitudes of high altitude nukes. A small rodent man stood over her. "Quite a pickle you're in, Misi Mitzi."
"Is this it, Bennick? Is this the last time I'll see you?" She wheezed as he knelt next to her.
"No... not yet, darling... You still have much to do." He exhibited a syringe full of neon-green fluid and injected it into her thigh. The electricity ceased arcing, and the frost stopped spreading, as her muscles relaxed and she fell into an agonizing sleep. "Rest well, Misi Mitzi Sen-D'ar Zho. Tomorrow you will begin again."
