Beyond the Stars
Chapter Six
The following days were none to pleasant. The radiation sickness began to fully set in and Caillyn had to bear it the best he could. Heavy vomiting, bleeding from multiple orifices including his eyes and ears, and dealing with a variety of sores and lesions that opened on his skin were just a few of the ordeals that he faced. A wide variety of medications were used to try and dampen the full effects but it remained agonizing to say the least. The wolf permanently walked around in a medically induced haze and spent most of his time sleeping. He stopped talking completely after Sampson brought up the final communication from Kalael.
"I'll let you know when I'm ready to talk" was the final phrase he uttered before he committed to his vow of silence. Sampson was left to helplessly watch the wolf suffer and stumble around the infirmary.
Fifty days past before the poisonings' effects started to subside. The wolf remained groggy and in pain but the physical effects began to diminish. While he was now no longer vomiting or leaking blood, the wolf remained in the infirmary waiting to recover his full strength. The ordeal cost him nearly a third of his already reduced body weight and was now no heavier than 120 pounds. Caillyn had struggled to eat during his illness but had thankfully regained at least some of his appetite, although at a much slower rate than Sampson would have liked.
Sampson throughout this tried to communicate with the wolf but never once received a reply to anything he said. Still he encouraged and gave medical advice, some of it used, most of it ignored.
At the eighty day mark, the medical scans showed that the radiation sickness had fully passed, yet the wolf still remained in the infirmary. Despite the strong protests of Sampson, he had begun to up his dosage of sleep aids and sedatives. The still silent wolf spent most of his time either asleep or in a mental state where he was completely unaware of his surroundings. As with everything else, Sampson could only watch, and plan for the endgame.
At the 120 day mark, the one year anniversary of Caillyn's reintegration, Sampson was finally able to put his long awaited strategy into action.
The groggy wolf had just woken up from his slumber and was heading to the operating theatre to re-dose himself with a sedative. He shuffled and stumbled to the cabinets and began to sort through the empty vials inside. He brought container after container up to his face, every one empty of it's contents. The more he looked the more agitated he became The wolf needed his fix.
"Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck!" he mumbled out loud as he tossed the last empty container out of the cabinet and onto the floor. His eyes darting around the operating theatre.
"Is something wrong" asked Sampson in his typical monotone voice
The young and now very skinny wolf scowled and looked up at the roof, mumbling to himself. He had just remembered that there were more medical supplies stored in the cargo bays. He padded towards the doors of the operating theatre and tried to pass through. The door did not budge. The wolf frowned and repeatedly tried to work the door open.
"The door is locked Mr. Kaldo"
The wolf ignored him and continued trying to work open the door.
"You will not be able to open the door"
"Open the door Sampson" growled Caillyn, as he began to slam his shoulder into the door in an effort to force it open. The first words he had spoken to the computer in nearly a year were harsh and bitter, one would barely recognize them as belonging to the spirited but reserved wolf of long ago.
"No Mr. Kaldo, it's about time we had a little chat about your condition"
The wolf stopped and angrily looked back into the room. "Open with door Sampson" he said through his gritted fangs
"No" was the calm reply that he received, but not the one that he had wanted.
The young wolf began yelling an incoherent mess of insults and profanity towards the computer, who took it all in stride.
"Are you finished Mr Kaldo?"
The wolf stood foaming at the mouth, his hackles raised on his neck and mouth curled up in a snarl. His instinct to try and look intimidating was all the evidence Sampson needed to confirm that his plan was working as intended.
"Mr Kaldo I recommend you eat something, this is going to be a bit of a bumpy transition"
The young wolf looked at the still large pile of survival rations in the corner before he dropped to his knees and began sorting through the empty vials on the floor, hoping he would find a gem among the trash.
Sampson watched him, already knowing that all the medication was gone. He had tracked the usage from the beginning and had been waiting a long time for this day.
"There is nothing left Mr. Kaldo, it is time that we begin to truly begin the healing process"
The wolf ignored him and continued his search, finally giving up after nearly an hour.
"It hurts Sampson, I ... just need something to take the edge off" he looked up with the saddest set of eyes he could produce. Any biological being could be forgiven if they gave into the look that was projected upwards. Sampson on the other hand was having none of it.
"Mr. Kaldo your physical illness was overcome nearly forty days ago, this type of medication will not help with the pain that you are feeling."
"What do you know about pain you fucking machine!" he screamed out angrily, which was followed up by a slew of profanity that he flung out into the room.
Sampson waited until the wolf finally quieted down before speaking.
"When you are ready to talk, I'll be waiting" he stated. He would not speak again until the wolf was past what he was about to go through. The intervention had begun.
The withdrawal symptoms Caillyn faced were relatively mild compared to the radiation poisoning, however he would have to face them head on, without any chemical help.
The first three days were the worst, he yelled constantly and trashed the operating theatre. Various tools, medication and bits of survival rations littered the floor. He tried numerous ways to force his way out of confinement, all of which ended in failure. The wolf, in a desperate act to remain under the comforting spell of the narcotics, administered a wide variety of other medical substances to himself. Antibiotics, steroids and even blood thinners, none of which gave him the desired comforting effect.
On the third day the wolf roamed the room clawing at the walls and doors as he finished coming down from his high and settled back into reality. Eventually he collapsed into heap on the floor where he curled up in a ball and cried. Hour upon hour passed as he cried away the pain of it all. His friends, his family and his species. Everyone he had ever known was gone and he alone had to bear the anguish of being alone, truly alone in the universe.
He slept in his ball against the wall of the operating room and on the forth day he began to try and rebuild his life.
The wolf slowly and carefully began to clean up his mess in the operating theatre. Bits of broken glass and sharp equipment were strewn about on the floor. It took him most of the day to return the room to the appearance of normalcy. He then went on to refresh his own room before having a shower and resigning himself to his bed, where he sobbed himself into a fitful slumber.
He spent the next few days alone with the comfort of his own thoughts but by the tenth he was ready to talk.
The young wolf sat on the floor of the operating theatre next to the large pile of survival rations, he was popping the tasteless but nutritional nuggets into his muzzle, after over a year of eating the same food it surprisingly starts to grow on you. He gazed up and around nervously as he munched on the kibble. His eyes darting around as he tried to gather both the courage and the words for what he wanted to do next.
It took several bags of rations before he finally decided to act.
"S ... S ... Sampson?" he stuttered softly as he looked down at his outstretched legs.
"Yes Mr. Kaldo?" the AI replied immediately through the intercom
"C ... Can we talk?"
"Of course! What would you like to talk about" the voice was very soothing and Caillyn felt as though he was speaking to his mother.
"I don't really know." he replied still looking at his legs, much skinnier than they once were.
"That's alright, as long as you're willing to talk, it's a step in the right direction"
The wolf didn't respond and popped a few more nuggets into his muzzle, he felt quite famished.
"How are you feeling?" asked Sampson breaking the silence between them
"Okay, I ... think" the thin wolf responded with hesitation. They again sat in silence for a few moments before he spoke again. "I actually don't know. I don't know how I feel right now" he said with a little more confidence.
"I'm sure you'll figure it out in time"
Neither of them spoke for a while as Caillyn popped open another bag of rations and began to chow down.
"I'm ..." Caillyn started before trailing off and looking back down to the floor. Sampson waited a few moments before he spoke..
"Please continue Mr. Kaldo, speak your mind"
The wolf slowly raised his gaze and took another few bites of rations.
"I'm ... not sure, what I'm supposed to do now" he said nervously
"You're going to finish eating that package of rations and get yourself back up to a respectable weight" replied Sampson
Caillyn stopped eating for a moment, before bursting out laughing. "I do look pretty pathetic don't I?"
"Not pathetic, just ... dainty" Sampson was happy he could make the wolf smile again
The "dainty" wolf continued to chuckle and examine his arms and legs as he pushed more food into his maw. He sat smiling, feeling better than he had in a long time.
"Whatever you decide to do Mr. Kaldo, I will aid you to the best of my ability. However I believe our first course of action should be to visit our original destination, we have come this far, we may as well see it through"
"Thanks Sampson"
"No worries, Mr. Kaldo"
"Sampson really, thank you for everything you've done. I may not show it well, but I am very grateful for all you've done. I don't know what would have happened if you weren't here" The wolf's eyes began to well up a bit and he looked down at the floor.
"Mr Kaldo, it was been and always shall be my pleasure to work along side of you, no matter what the circumstances are."
The young wolf raised his head continued to shove kibble in his mouth as tears silently ran down his cheek.
In the coming days Caillyn was slowly pulled back into the early stages of ship-board life. Sampson remained firm on the terms of his rehabilitation. Thirty more days in the infirmary out of reach of any narcotics while following a strict diet and sleep schedule. Caillyn did not protest in the slightest and was just happy to see that the computer seemed to care about him as much as it did.
After fifteen days Sampson surprised him with a new mental challenge. He unlocked and opened the doors to the infirmary giving him access to the rest of the ship, but requested him to remain inside the medical bay for the final fifteen days of his own accord. It would be a complete lie if the wolf told you he was not tempted to run out of the room immediately after the seal was broken. However he held strong and by the third day, the last of those thoughts faded away.
The day finally came when Sampson declared him free to go and he fully regained unrestricted access to all areas of the ship. Caillyn, while greatly respectful of the AI's opinion, had to demonstrate his own resolve to himself. He decided to spend an additional ten days in the infirmary to prove to himself once and for all that he was in full control of his mind and ambitions.
By the time he finally left the infirmary he had gained back a solid portion of his weight and had spent nearly a year and a half in the small area. The cruise phase was already past the halfway point, then the next chapter of their journey would begin.
Days passed by with relative ease, Caillyn slowly switched back to standard meals from the protein synthesizer and spent a large portion of his time getting back his once beloved frame. The gym was very well equipped and the habitation rings made for an easy running track.
The ship was still holding up well, and while Caillyn was now forced to perform all maintenance which took no more than a few hours per day. Unfortunately due to the loss of electronic records and operating procedures, most of his tasks were done solely by his memory or by common sense. He could no longer be certain of what he should be doing on the ship to keep it in top shape.
Fortunately, the next year and a bit passed by uneventfully. The ship now had twelve days of faster than light travel left, before they would arrive at their destination. The young wolf found himself becoming increasingly nervous and excited for what they would find at this strange new world. To combat this minor mental problem, he had begun to spend more and more time in the gym, trying to distract his mind.
The wolf lay on his back pressing upwards against the machine's weight bar. The large stack of steel plates provided the resistance to his arms' movements. He growled and groaned as he completed rep after rep, his arms and chest rippling under the strain. Halfway through his set Sampson's voice came over the intercom.
"Mr. Kaldo"
The wolf ignored the voice and continued with his set, his growling becoming louder as he neared the few final reps.
"Mr. Kaldo" repeated the monotone voice
The wolf's growl turned into a snarl as he thrust the weight away from his sweaty muscled body.
"Mr. Kaldo" called the voice once again
The wolf yelled out as he completed another rep, but instead of continuing he brought the equipment back down to it's resting position. "Alright Sampson, what do you want." He growled. The wolf hated being interrupted mid-workout and he remained under the machine, shirtless, panting, and sweating.
"Mr. Kaldo, please confirm that you are in B-Ring habitation module"
"Yes Sampson I'm in the gym, every day for the past year I've been in the one and only gym at this exact same time every day." The wolf was very annoyed and made no attempt to hide it in his tone.
"Mr. Kaldo, you know I would only interrupt you in your ... sanctuary ... if it was important"
"Fine Sampson, what's so important that you need to talk with me right now" the wolf reached down and began to drink from a large bottle of water.
"I've detected movement through D-Ring and into E-Ring"
The wolf began to cough violently spewing water everywhere. In his fit he managed to hit head on the equipment above him.
"Fuck" he said rubbing his forehead, before reprocessing the statement Sampson had just said. "The fuck are you talking about Sampson?"
"Several motion sensors have detected movement through D and E-Ring, D-Ring junction four has just, at this very moment, gone off"
"You're fucking joking right? We're not even in regular space and I'm the only one alive on this ship. There is nobody is walking around D-Ring" Caillyn shimmied out from under the machine and sat up on the end of the bench.
"D-Ring Junction 3, motion detected"
"Sampson if this is some sort of sick joke, you better fucking stop it right now" He got to his feet and stretched his back out.
"Mr. Kaldo this is no joke, D-Ring Junction 2, motion detected"
"Fuck" The wolf thought for a moment, and started to walk out of the room, slowly building up to a jog. He headed towards the galley on C-Ring, there were likely a few knives around that he could use if necessary. Repelling foreign bodies off of the TOOF was never a component of his limited training and the handful of projectile weapons on board were locked away in the cargo area. Besides, firing any of them inside the vessel would result in the immediate decompression of the ship, likely blowing himself and any would be intruders out into the vacuum of space and certain death.
As he strolled into the galley to begin his search, Sampson came on with the latest update.
"D-Ring Junction 1, motion detected"
"Lock all doors on D-Ring and seal the ventilation system." commanded Caillyn, he searched through the various cabinets and drawers before finding a suitably large and sharp blade. He began heading towards D-Ring.
"All doors and systems sealed on D-Ring. Motion detected in Junction 4"
It took the wolf thirty seconds to run down to Junction 2 between D and C-Ring, the double doors were sealed but the large windows allowed nearly unobstructed vision through the intersection.
"D-Ring Junction 3, motion detected"
The wolf would only have to wait a few more moments, before the intruder would come by him. He kept the knife ready, although there were two sets of sealed heavy duty doors between him and D-Ring
"D-Ring Junction 2, motion detected"
The wolf froze, holding his breathe and mentally preparing to see anything.
And he waited
and waited
and waited
"D-Ring Junction 1, motion detected"
Caillyn inhaled sharply, finally realizing he had been holding his breathe. He frowned and furrowed his brow.
"Sampson?"
"Yes Mr. Kaldo"
"There was nothing there"
"I detected motion as I have described"
"There was nothing there" the wolf continued
"Very curious, please standby" requested the AI
Caillyn leaned back against the large windows looking out at vibrant distortions caused by the Stellar Drive.
"Please stand down Mr. Kaldo, the error is mine. One of my processor banks has partially failed and had been spewing out incongruous data. All of the motion sensor data in the previous hour has been faulty. Re-processing of the readings indicate no anomalies or positive results. I apologize and will unlock all of the doors."
"Fuck Sampson, you really know how to screw with someone" the wolf said coldly. "Open this set of doors only and leave all others closed. I won't be able to sleep unless I look around myself." The computer complied and Caillyn walked into D-Ring. He began his walk around the ring in the opposite direction of travel of the faulty readings. He kept the knife ready in his left paw, despite the AI's insistence, he was still more than a little on edge.
Two laps around the ring and his mind finally settled down.
"Alright Sampson, we're good; you can unlock everything now. I'll take a look at the malfunctioning processor tomorrow and see what I can do"
"Again I apologize Mr. Kaldo, but thank you for the offer. It is probable that the fault originated due to radiation damage, you will likely be unable to repair it."
"Alright, but I'm still going to look anyway, plus it'll give me something to do for a few hours" the wolf headed back to his accommodations. What he needed now was a hot shower to relax his tense body.
