"Best Interests"

It was nearing sunset at the end of a beautiful summer day; Elena Marikson stared out the window from the sofa she had planted herself on about an hour ago, she had been reading a book but the quiet and peaceful nature of the moment caused her to pause and investigate the light. Elena blushed a bit, noticing it and she giggled.

"So how true is it?" She asked.

"Hmm?" The red maned gray wolf looked up with an air of distraction at Elena's context and vague sentence.

Elena pointed. "Your tattoo."

"Oh, you got me." She said with a smirk. "Some girls gotta have the beef, you know?" She said without trying to sound coy. "You've been awful quiet." She diverted the subject.

Elena shrugged. "I'm just trying to get into this book but I keep finding myself distracted."

"Is that because you've got your little boy toy coming over tonight?"

Elena felt her cheeks start to burn as she looked at the wolf. "Nooo!" She responded defensively.

Jain grinned wide enough to allow her tongue to stick out from between her front teeth. "You've been keeping him hidden from me for so long I started to think maybe he was a figment of your imagination. Maybe the times we fooled around just made you conjure up this man of your dreams to make me all jealous."

"That's not it at all." Elena said. "It's just a study date, that's all."

"Mmhmm, right!" She taunted with a playful kick to nudge the squirrel. "You little minx. I just don't understand why you kept him away from me this whole time."

"You don't? I'd think it was obvious."

There was a knock at the door just then and Elena moved to stand up. The wolf gave a laugh of amusement. "Ooh touche." She teased.

Fuming, Elena made it to the door, straightened herself up by briefly flipping her hair back some and then opened it; the young looking lion standing behind the door caught Jain off guard though. He was tall, brooding, his shoulder-length dark hair fell straight down behind him with a few long locks that dangled over his shoulders in front of him. Wearing a long black coat, the purple markings across his face practically shimmered as the light hit them. In the middle of a sip from her cup, Jain gagged promptly and sent the liquid bubbling back into her glass upon seeing him. As Elena greeted the man with a bounce and a hug that almost knocked him off his feet, Jain's stare turned ice cold as he looked at her too.

"I---ah--- didn't expect you'd have company. It is good to see you again." Malekai said with a stammer.

Elena looked at the two of them one after the other for a moment before piecing it together. "Do you two know each other?" She asked.

"Not re--" Kai began.

"Yes." Jain answered at the same time on the completely opposite end of the spectrum, confusing both of the others. "That... that is we share a few classes, that's all." She said promptly after. "It's good to see you Kai." She said, though not convincingly continued to glare at him.

"You... too?" Malekai didn't know exactly how to respond. He put his arm around Elena and nuzzled her gently. "Come mein leib... we should get to our studies."

"Sure thing." Elena said, immediately forgetting the awkwardness of the moment. "I'll be right back, I just need to run up and get my books. Are you okay Jain?"

"I'll be fine." She said, looking back at the lion's purple markings. She pushed a smile to her face, trying not to look so flustered. "Go ahead and get your books."

Elena made her way from the living room and into the hall behind to head up the stairs. The sounds of her footsteps thumping up them made the two of them look at each other. "So, how's your boyfriend? He good?"

Kai's speaking nearly surprised Jain as she turned her eyes back to him. "He's fine." She said.

"Have you told him more than you told Elena about us?"

"There is nothing between us." Jain answered coldly. "And would you keep it down? She doesn't need to know about this."

"I was not the one who fucked around with me under false pretenses, little wolf." Kai said, sounding a bit more menacing. "What was it you said? You had an open relationship?"

"Yes. And I still do. I am also very protective of my friends, so if you're doing this out of some reason or spite--"

Kai scoffed. "You are still quite full of yourself, I see. I did not know that you and Elena associated or I would not have come over tonight. What? Are you friends? Roommates? Are you trying to get into her pants too?"

"Ms. Sahrik?" The sound of Professor Lahtman's voice startled the wolf from staring at the lion sitting near the back corner behind her desk. He had walked in not too long ago, long hair, interesting markings across his face, she supposed it was what drew her eyes to them. He had a big, burly body too. She immediately locked onto him like she was on the hunt, and when he sat down she completely lost track of everything until the white tiger professor stood over her and spoke her name. She looked up into his face, his glasses shining to the point she couldn't quite make out his eyes. "Are you paying attention, Ms. Sahrik?" He asked again with a bit firmer tone to his voice.

"Yes, professor. I'm sorry, sir." She said.

"I'd suggest if you want to spend your classroom hours oogling something, you spend it at the observatory and with astronomy instead of looking at boys like a piece of meat."

"Why, isn't that what you do?"

Jain wasn't one to really hold back when it came to speaking her mind, but the sudden and indescribable nature of her response caused her to cringe as the tiger's face turned a bright red and his eyes opened to the size of manhole covers. Everyone else in the class burst out into laughter, but at the same time it looked like Lahman was going to bust some sort of a vein in his skull.

The bell tolled four o'clock as Jain picked up another vial and dipped a swab down into it to clean it. She wasn't sure exactly how she got saddled with Chemistry as one of her electives, maybe it was over a cute boy... or a cute girl, but detention in this class sucked! After evaluating and swiping the glass clean with a soft cloth, she carefully slid it back into the collector giving it a soft *tink* as it slipped into place.

"Be careful, Ms. Sahrik." Professor Lahman said from his desk, where he sat with his feet up and his nose deep in a book. "Those vials are extremely delicate."

"I'll show you delicate old man..." She fumed under her breath as she picked up the next vial.

"Excuse me?"

A new voice startled Jain, whose fingers slipped from the vial and it fell only a few inches before she and the lion from earlier caught it together. She opened her mouth, then smiled at him as he handed it over to her. "I am sorry if I startled you, I couldn't help but notice you were still here. I wonder if you would allow me to walk you home when you are done here..."

"Y-you didn't." She said. "I mean... sure, but I've got a few more of these things to clean, then I've got to clean a few beakers and--"

"Oh, for heaven's sake. Just get out of here." Lahman said with a fuming frustration finally being let loose. "I'll finish things up as long as you've learned that it's not proper to disrespect your elders, Ms. Sahrik."

"I can't promise anything, professor. But I'll be sure not to out you in front of your classes again--"

"JUST GO!" He burst out angrily as he pointed his finger toward the door, slamming upright in his chair again.

Jain giggled a bit as she followed the lion in a run to the door and they ran out into the hallway again. "My name is Malekai, by the way." The lion finally introduced himself. "I am sort of new here, so it's good to see a friendly face."

"Jain." She responded "Jain Sahrik. Nice to meet you too, Kai."

"Hmm. Kai. I like it, it is short and to the point."

"Hopefully not that short." Jain answered with a teasing tongue stuck through her teeth. The flirt caught Kai off guard who cleared his throat and smiled at her. She chuckled. "Sorry, it's in my nature."

"What, to flaunt at guys like me?" He said. "Because I do not mind it at all."

"Really?" She cooed and swung her arms around him. "So you don't mind it when a girl pays attention to you? I could definitely appreciate that."

Kai's hands grabbed the lower part of her back and held her up as she leaned against his larger size. "You're pretty brazen too." He said. "I could enjoy that." Kai lifted his arm and examined his watch. "But for now I need to be going, I have an appointment to get to. Perhaps you and I could have dinner tomorrow night? Unless you have classes to attend..."

"Meh skip 'em if I have to. What did you have in mind?"

Kai gave a smirk. "I suppose you will have to see, ja?"

Jain's eyes crawled all over the lion, she was practically fawning over him. "Sure." She said with a grin. "I think I'd like that."

Jain had originally had a date with her boyfriend Ahriman that night, but he had to cancel it for another appointment. Jain spent most of her evening in her dorm room until her roommate began to drive her nuts and she decided to go for a walk. It was fairly aimless for a rainy evening, she wore a coat and had an umbrella, watching the rain trickle down off of it as she made her way through the dark and mostly empty back streets.

Coming to a familiar intersection; the wolf realized she was in Ahri's neighborhood, but as she walked past his house, the lights were off, the house empty for the evening. She continued down the street and made a turn before abruptly running into someone. "OOMPH!" She grunted as she took a step back. "Oh man I'm so sorry!" She exclaimed. "I wasn't watching where I was--you?!" She paused as she recognized the lion standing in front of her.

Malekai had a surprised look on his face as he bent down and made a bit of a bow toward her. "Oh! Jain, I hadn't expected to see you out at this late hour!"

"No, no. It's fine. I actually forgot my boyfriend was out tonight, so I was just out for a walk--"

"Ah... so you do have a boyfriend?" He asked, looking somewhat hurt.

"Well, technically I do. But we have an open relationship."

Kai cocked his head awkwardly. "An open relationship?"

"Just an understanding in some relationships that so long as they play it safe, either partner can sleep with someone else that he or she wants without repercussions later."

"So... your boyfriend..." Kai paused. "He is... okay with this? With other men sharing their time with you?"

"Are you kidding?" Jain exclaimed confidently before draping her arms around the lion's neck. "He thanks me for the rare occasions I do that. I'd exhaust him if it were just the two of us. I mean, all that raucous fucking drains him every time."

There was a slight shimmer that went across the markings on Kai's face as he looked at her. "Is that a fact?" He asked. A grin crossing his face. "Well, perhaps we could spend a night testing that little claim out."

Jain's fingers splayed across Kai's chest, sliding down underneath his shirt for a moment. She could feel him shiver at her touch as he smiled nervously. "How about tonight then?" She asked.

The pair could hardly keep their hands off of each other, even when they were checking into the Bed on the Border Motel; a somewhat seedy fifteen bedroom place on the strip at the edge of town. Even as Kai was paying, he could hardly contain himself with the lovely canid licking and nipping at his neck. Bursting into the hotel room was hardly the excuse for them to start pulling their clothes off; Kai pulled off Jain's light jacket, revealing her cropped spaghetti-top shirt underneath. Jain smiled and sat next to him on the bed as she began to gather up some of the clothes thrown around the room. "I've got to get to class." She said. "Do you have any today?"

"Not until ten." He answered as he curled his arm around her and laid her next to him. "I was hoping this night could last forever. You're right, you do have a talent for draining everything out of a man." He chuckled. "Does your boyfriend know what he is missing out on?"

"I like to think so. But Ahri's got girls he's interested in too, so I'm sure they're not as demanding as me."

"Ahri?" Kai sat up again, allowing her to move.

"My boyfriend." She sat up. "Ahriman, why?"

"Your... your boyfriend is Ahriman Harken? Son of Tiberius Harken?"

"I'm not surprised you've heard of him, but why are you sounding so annoyed all of a sudden."

"Uugh! I cannot believe it. What terrible luck!" He exclaimed as he got up abruptly and started gathering his clothing. "Stormrise Industries' CEO's son shacking up with one of the most amazing women I've slept with, it just sickens me!"

"Waaait a minute." Jain said. "Sickens you?! Me? Or Ahri?"

"The fact that Ahriman sleeps with you sickens me. He is nothing but a contemptible old bull who likes to fuck little girls and brag about it to his little friends; to his father. He is taking advantage of you, Jain, can't you see that?"

"Now hold on." She said, angrily responding. "For one thing, Ahri doesn't even really go all in on our open relationship; the fact that I came onto him and the fact that we're in a relationship is because I wanted it. It wasn't some sick perversion..."

"Just because he let you talk him into things like a relationship doesn't mean he didn't manipulate you into it, Jain." He said, snapping his shirt and pulling it on. "Ahriman Harken is nothing but a no-good, money-grubbing, sucking the teet of his father spoiled brat. I feel tainted for having had sex with his conquest--"

That was it; that was the last straw, Jain nearly broke her knuckle punching Kai so hard. But it was worth it; he flew back into the door like he'd been hit by a truck, but caught himself before crumpling to the floor. "Ahri's better than you." She said through a clenched jaw. "And he's gonna hear the shit you've been talking about him, Kai. Mark my words, you've pissed off the wrong wolf. You know, I didn't wonder until just now exactly what you were doing on his street last night, and how you just happened to run into me." She hissed trying to swallow enough of her anger to urge him. "Get out. I don't want to see your lying face ever again."

She'd expected him to be angry, but as the lion got up, he instead grinned a bit. "Oh my, you've got spunk. I like that!" Kai slipped into his coat and yanked the door open behind him. "Keep an eye on him, Jain." He warned. "You will see what he is, you mark those words." He said as he closed the door behind him, leaving Jain trembling with rage.

"Weren't you headed home?" Kai asked, bored with the conversation as Jain clenched her fists.

"And leave Elena alone with you?! I don't think so!" She shouted angrily. "I'm not going to risk you hurting her like you did with me..."

"I did not do anything to you." Kai answered smugly. "You simply had a disagreement with my opinion, as I recall, you were the one who hit me. And I wouldn't hurt my little leibling..." He paused and his smirk increased. "Not much anyway."

Jain's eyeball twitched; she was furious now, her hands clenched to fists. With a loud yell, she lunged at the lion, swinging her fist to punch him, but Kai swooped his head back to avoid the strike. "I am not going to let you hurt her! Do you hear me? I don't care if I have to stay here all night to babysit, I am not leaving you alone with her!" She grabbed Kai's coat, yanking it and nearly ripping it with the ferocity of her attack. Quickly, Kai muttered something under his breath; Jain couldn't understand what the growling language was he was using, but the words almost annoyed her ears. Suddenly, his palm flew toward her face and her eyes widened, remembering the shimmer in Kai's markings before--

Elena had some difficulty finding all three of the books in her room, she managed to snatch the Calculus book out from under her bed before grunting and getting back to her feet. She thought she'd heard something like thundering or shouting from downstairs, but as she made her way to the steps, everything seemed to be alright. Jain and Kai having a civil conversation as she reached the bottom of the steps.

"Hey, are you guys alright?" She asked. "I thought I heard shouting."

Jain chuckled and turned to the squirrel. "Oh no, Elena. I was just catching up with Kai. That's all, making sure he promised to behave himself while I was gone."

Elena blushed. "Behave himself? That doesn't sound like much fun." She said coyly in a whisper to her.

"Jain, weren't you talking about heading out?" Kai asked.

Jain's eyes blinked at that. "Oh, right. I've got to get home to take care of something." She said before giving Elena a hug and a quick peck on the cheek to make her blush. "If you need anything, call." She said.

"You got it sis." The squirrel teased. Jain picked up her jacket from the floor and slung it over her shoulders, after a long defining stare toward Kai, he took a step back from the door to let her pass and she opened the door, stepping outside. "So." Elena said to the lion. "You ready to get started?"

"Sure." Kai said as he removed his coat and dropped it over the couch as Elena set up the books on the coffee table and seated herself just across from the lion.

"Let's start with a little biology, and we'll just work ourselves up to Calculus for the finale."

"You have trouble with Calculus?" He asked.

"No." Elena shook her head. "I figured you might need some extra help with it though."

"Hah that's nice. I do okay with it at least..."

Over the next hour, the pair studied fervently over the subjects of biology and chemistry and then moved into calculus. As Elena read the review questions, she grew more and more impressed that he was getting nearly every answer right. At least the ones she could get just as easily, which meant he was improving. She groaned and leaned back, exhausted from their studies. "Uuugh! Even for me this can get tedious." She complained.

"Come on, liebling. One more question." Kai said.

Elena looked at him and sighed before looking down at the book, she flipped a page and asked the question; as she spoke, Kai thumped his finger lightly on the underside of the table; the magic he cast allowed him to see into her mind: "If the functions f and g are such that f(x) equals g(x) plus k where k is a constant than:

(A) f '(x) = g '(x) + k

(B) f '(x) = g '(x)

(C) None of the above"

Kai could see the response clear as day, but took a moment to answer himself. Rolling his eyes back to think he said: "B"

Elena's eyes widened. "Oh wow. That's really good, I would have had a hard time with that."

"No you wouldn't." Kai answered confidently.

"How'd you get that so fast? You've been on fire tonight!"

Kai smiled. "Magic." He teased, waving his fingers. "I can see into your mind clearly, does that worry you?"

Unsure, Elena scooted back on the couch some. "N-no, not really. You're just being a silly lion."

"Whelp, study date's over." He said, shirking the subject aside and standing up to join Elena on the couch. "How about we start that real date?" He asked as he brushed his fingers along her forearm.

Elena blushed a little and smiled, but she didn't pull away. "Well, we could go out, I know a nice ch-chinese restaurant we could try..."

"Mmhmm..." Kai mumbled, almost dismissively as he brushed Elena's short hair back and nuzzled at her neck. "Yes, we could." His hand slowly working its way down her arm toward her leg. "We could stay in too..." He whispered before kissing at the arch between her neck and shoulder, making her shiver and lean into it some.

"I... I don't..." Elena started to say, but lost her train of thought as Kai's hand dipped a bit lower and squeezed at her thigh. She paused and gasped, her face full of heat now as her blush grew more intense. "Ahh..."

"It's not just calculus and biology I can see in your mind, Elena." Kai admitted, making her wonder if he was kidding. "I can see that you are a woman with needs, needs that you're afraid to express. But you can express them with me..." He paused and saw her blushing so hard that red was starting to show through her fur. "A man who has the same needs, who can fulfill yours, isn't that something you want?"

"I--I do want that." She responded, her voice barely squeaking above a whisper.

"Do you have anyone you expect to come home anytime soon?" He asked, directing his voice into her ear as his hand climbed up, gently teasing her stomach, then her chest as he rested his body even closer.

Elena could hear his heartbeat as she returned the gesture, gently and nervously touching his muscled form as she eeked out a soft. "N-no..."

"So, with Jain gone home, we have this place to ourselves, ja?"

Kai leaned in and nibbled at Elena's neck again his hand descending to her thigh once more. "Mmmhmm..." She said, breathing heavily as her muzzle rubbed against Kai's neck, taking in his scent. "We're all alone."

"Then let's go upstairs to your bedroom then." He said, his hand again caressing up her body a bit. "We can have a little fun there... more than a little fun if you'd let me... liebling..."

"Y-yes... okay." She said before suddenly being pulled into a deep kiss.

Elena's face was burning from her blush as she gasped in shock, immediately her body began to melt against his own. Pulling her body into his, Kai felt her lithe form contort around his back and with his other arm, he scooped her up and off the couch. Their kiss broke briefly as they approached the steps, Kai nearly stumbling on the first one, Elena giggled a bit as he checked his footing and then the two returned to the kiss as he ascended with her toward the bedroom.
