Daniel (Dan)
Daniel moved out of home as soon as he was able, seeking to make his way in life and charting his own path. While many of his friends chose to continue on to college or forge ahead in starting a career, Daniel is charting new waters in an attempt to follow his dream to become a professional artist. Rather than following some preconceived notion of what the ivory tower community considers a proper artistic training, Dan chose instead to try and create his own style. He's taking a supplemental art class here-and-there at the local community college but, for the most part, he needs to save his money because his job barely pays enough for him to get by with his month-to-month bills.
Daniel's greatest personality strength is that he is benevolent. He is naturally giving and generous, always willing to help others, sometime to his own detriment. He often thinks of others before himself and, while he diligently defends his spare time and scheduling freedom he thinks nothing of spending personal resources where they can be best put to good use by those who need them most. He doesn't do this for any kind of pay-back, rather, the act itself makes him feel good knowing he can make a difference.
Daniel's greatest personality weakness is that he is something of a voyeur. Perhaps it comes from his love of natural body forms or his interest in anatomy and physiology, or maybe it's just because he has a thing for naked bodies, but Daniel has a natural inclination to watch, see, peep, spy, and intrude. This extends to more than sexual pursuits; he is inquisitive and curious to an almost intrusive manner. He likes knowing what's going on around him and he doesn't hesitate to ask questions. And, yes: Dan has a large porn collection.
Daniel will have the most luck in the story interacting benevolently with spirits but also risks a great chance in being taken advantage of by the spirits. He will have a greater chance for positive endings involving physical intimacy with spirits but is also at a greater risk for bad endings involving possession, death, and alienation. He will get along best with Young spirits, Trickster spirits, and Herne the Elk spirit.
Edward (Eddie)
Edward has always been self-sufficient and it was no surprise for his friends or family when he moved out of home on his eighteenth birthday. Eddie stayed around to finish high school but after that he was off and out, moving to Cherry City because it gave him a chance to start fresh in a new area that had a variety of job openings that didn't require anything more than a high school education. He's ready to begin life and he hit the ground running. He's not interested in going to college, but he's filling that extra time with a job that'll let him maintain a comfortable lifestyle that doesn't require him hitting the books or wasting any more time on scholastic education.
Edward's primary personality strength is that he believes strongly in a sense of universal justice. He thinks that equanimity and fairness is the bread and butter of all working systems and if there is inequity or unfairness then the system needs to be changed. He treats everyone with respect and expects the same in return. He is open, honest, and thinks personal freedoms are a right and not a privilege. Oppression and mistreatment are in direct opposition to Eddie's outlook on life, and that can get him riled up faster than anything else.
Edward's greatest personality weakness is, without doubt, his temper. It doesn't take a lot to make Eddie angry, and that often led to him getting into fights in school. He's since come to grips that he's a hot-head. he knows that looking at his fists as a way to resolve problems isn't appropriate in all circumstances but he's okay with that when it comes to those who deserve a solid thrashing. While he tries as hard as he can to keep his temperament under control in most circumstances sometimes he just has to pop the top of the tea kettle and let off some steam before he risks an explosion.
Edward will have the most luck in the story maintaining a positive relationship with all spirits but once an imbalance of favor is created he has a greater chance of alienating one or more. He will have a greater chance for positive endings involving multiple spirits and is the only protagonist who can achieve a perfect ending with all four of his spirits. He is the least likely protagonist to have a bad ending involving possession or death but runs a high risk for alienation. He will get along best with Old spirits, Guide spirits, and Anapa the Jackal Spirit. Eddie is only one of two protagonists who can completely resolve the conflict within The Ancient One.
Jessica (Jess)
Jessica's family tried to make sure that she grew up in a loving and supportive environment. As such, she enjoyed a relatively positive childhood. Her education went the traditional route and she excelled in school enough that Jess was able to get a partial scholarship to Cherry City's four year college. Even though the money isn't quite enough to cover classes her family is helping by supplementing the scholarship with a monthly stipend for spending. A few student loans cosigned by her family rounds out her funds so she doesn't have to worry about holding down a job.
Jessica's greatest personality trait is her willpower. Unlike many other teens, Jess has refrained from drugs, alcohol, or smoking, choosing the focus on the future rather than instant gratification. Although she had a boyfriend in high school she refused to become involved sexually with him which, unfortunately, ultimately led to them breaking up senior year but she views that more as a victory than a failure; if he'd truly loved her then he would have been willing to wait for her to be comfortable with saying yes, but he hadn't. In her mind that only reinforced the idea that she had chosen correctly in maintaining her purity.
Jessica's greatest fault is that she is horribly indecisive. Rather than making an active decision she often chooses instead not to decide, thereby losing out on opportunities that come her way because she procrastinates in making up her mind. This has also led to her becoming something of a generalist; if her inability to make up her mind continues then it is very likely that she will enter her fourth year of college without selecting a major and there is a real possibility that she won't meet requirements for anything more than a general education certificate.
Jessica will have the most luck in the story providing moral guidance to otherwise wily spirits but also risks alienating some of the newer or wilder spirits. She will have a greater chance of redeeming dangerous spirits and a lower chance of being possessed but also has a greater chance of alienating spirits and perhaps dying in bad endings. Jess will get along best with Guide and Protector spirits, especially Jack the Gryphon spirit, and is one of two protagonists who can have a physically-intimate positive ending with him.
Joshua (Josh)
Joshua has always been good with his hands and has been tinkering with things for as long as he could remember. As soon as he was old enough he started working construction with his uncle, who owned a small remodeling company. After graduating high school Josh decided to move to Cherry City so he could go to a vocational trade school. In addition to full time classes he is also working two part time jobs that allow him some scheduling flexibility so they don't get in the way of his schooling. Between work and some financial help from his family Josh is able to make ends meet; while he doesn't live a rich life he is able to be comfortable enough to focus on work and school instead of his bank account.
Joshua's greatest personality trait is his diligence. He is willing to put forth the effort and has the mindset required to persevere past setbacks and obstacles. While some might call him bull-headed, Josh strongly believes that nothing worth doing is easy. His single-minded approach to life can make it difficult for him to find time for friends or leisure but those willing to stick with him and can accommodate his busy schedule find that his devotion also extends to those relationships, and he will work hard with what time he has to cultivate and maintain them.
Joshua's one major vice is that he LOVES food. While his active lifestyle means that his food-centric outlook doesn't have as much of an effect as it would have on someone who is more sedentary he does have a few extra pounds from his eagerness to stay on the cutting edge of what's popular on the culinary scene. He fancies himself something of a cook and he watches food programming in what little leisure time he has in the hopes of encountering interesting recipes he can try for his next meal.
Josh will have the most luck in the story getting along with benevolent and stalwart spirits but will have a harder time interacting with tricksters and the more chaotic spirits. He will have a greater chance for generally positive endings with positively aligned spirits and is one of the lowest risk characters for a bad possession ending but also has one of the highest chances of a bad ending involving death or alienation, especially among the maligned spirit characters. He will get along best with Old spirits, Protector spirits, and Felicity the Cougar, although he is the only male character who cannot have a physically intimate positive ending with her.
Kris (Christine)
Kris, who was born Christine, grew up a major tom boy, hated that his single mother always wanted to put him in a dress and pastel colors, and preferred action figures to dolls. In high school he realized that he self-identified as male. Although he didn't actively reject the 'cool clique', he did oppose the lipstick and pom-pom cheerleaders and wanted nothing to do with traditionally 'girl' activities. He got some major grief from the other students in his small town school who called him things like "weirdo", "lesbian", "dyke", and "freak". As soon as he had the chance he fled to Cherry City where he now focuses on trying to hold down a job and go to college at the same time.
Kris' greatest personality trait is his willingness to champion worthwhile causes. The trials and tribulations of his past have given strength to his mettle, leaving him strong-willed and outspoken. He is willing to step in and protect the little guy or speak out against injustice and will fervently oppose systematic oppression based on age, gender, race, ethnicity, or other institutionalized forms of prejudice. This has turned Kris into something of a social justice warrior, but he is more interested in making a positive difference than being labeled some kind of hero.
Kris, despite being so outspoken and headstrong is actually quite timid in other ways, using his bravado to hide those insecurities. Of a moderate build, Kris can pass visually for male although he has not had any body modification; he wraps his breasts to fit in better but has never really considered any surgeries since he's comfortable with his body as long as others aren't obsessing over the fact that he is genetically female but considers himself male. Regardless, he has enough reservations about his body that he prefers more clothes over less, and this has gotten in the way of intimacy and relationships in the past.
Kris will have the most luck in the story getting along with dynamic and pragmatic spirits but will have a harder time interacting with most Old spirits and those who follow a more traditional approach (excluding the Trickster spirits). He has a greater chance for generally positive endings with most spirits and has a dramatically reduced chance for bad endings involving possession, excluding Trickster and Glamour based spirits, which have a greatly increased chance for bad endings involving possession. Kris will get along best with Young spirits, especially Aiden the Bat Spirit. Despite the hardships involved in establishing a positive relationship with Tom the Behemoth (Rhino) spirit, Kris is the only protagonist who can have a physically intimate positive ending with him. He is also the only physically female protagonist who can have an intimate positive ending relationship with Felicity the Cougar spirit.
Lorelei
Lorelei considers her childhood 'good enough', neither great nor horrible, but it got her through her formative years without any real damage and her teenage years... well... she was a teenager. Suffering from the common self-esteem issues found among introverted teens, Lorelei took to quiet brooding and rejection of popular culture, choosing to go her own way and adopted a peripherally 'goth' outlook and style. While this has become more mild after graduating high school she still tends to remain on the periphery of social conventions. Regardless, she left home after high school and, thanks to incredibly good grades moved to Cherry City to pursue a four year education a full scholarship.
Lorelei's greatest personality trait is her selflessness. While her humility often comes across as off-putting to those with bigger personalities it doesn't mean she is weak-willed-- far from it, in fact. Despite being introspective and introverted, she has a willingness to prove herself. This manifests in a desire to excel and to 'be of use'. To this end she is both far more brave and proactive than most would expect of a young woman with black dyed hair and a generally downcast gaze.
Lorelei's greatest personality fault stems from her selflessness; she is generally insecure and lacks self-esteem. As often as this gets her moving to excel it also manifests as self-doubt and second-guessing herself. In general, Lorelai is willing to see her successes as flukes and expects failure as often as not. One reason she relies so strongly on the opinions of others is because she doesn't trust her own, and so her endless seeking of validation can drive her to incredible success but, just as often, can be her downfall.
Lorelei is a strange dichotomy when it comes to interacting with spirits as well as possible endings, as she has some of the best chances for generally positive endings but also some of the greatest chances for most of the bad endings. Either endings (positive or negative) will generally be more mild in scope than other protagonists and she has some of the lowest chances of creating happy endings for multiple spirits; fortunately she will also have a harder time creating bad endings for multiple spirits. Unfortunately, out of all of the bad endings she has the greatest opportunity to be the victim of a sexually invasive possession (very dark ending). Lorelei will get along best with Guide, Tribal, and Protector spirits, especially Sabhàna and/or Treboada the Wolf spirits; she will have a harder time with Tricksters, Instigators, and Self-Serving spirits. Warning: including Lorelei in a story with Kon and/or Gon the Fox spirits is asking for trouble.
Richard (Rich)
Richard wanted to be in the medical field for as long as he could remember. When he was in his early teens he spent some time in the hospital visiting his grandmother, who had taken ill. After interacting with the registered nurse he became even more resolute in his plan and elected to become a nurse. Having chosen a more traditionally female profession he earned a fair amount of ridicule, but he shrugged it off. As soon as he graduated high school he moved out, relocating to Cherry City, and enrolled in the university. He is continuing to pursue his dream and isn't about to let anything stop him... not even the sudden introduction of spirits into his life.
Richard's greatest strength is his capacity for kindness. He is a truly compassionate individual and he focuses strongly on the needs, moods, and welfare of others. While this isn't the same as being completely selfless, Rich often acts on a subconscious level in figuring out how best to help those in need. He is self-aware and knows the kind of toll it can have on a caretaker, thus he is careful to also handle his own needs; if he wants to be able to help other then he needs to take care of himself too.
Richard's major shortcoming is his focus on financial matters. He's seen the way that others his own age have destroyed their future with using credit cards and living beyond their means and so he has decided to be fiscally responsible; unfortunately he can sometimes take it too far. Rich is incredibly conscientious when it comes to expenses. He is a careful saver and spending too much money at once can make him feel physically sick to his stomach. While some may consider this a strength, the fact of the matter is that he causes himself almost as much harm by skimping on quality for the sake of conserving every last penny. Rich lives half way across town from the college but he wakes up an hour early so he can walk rather than buy a bus pass (he thought about buying a bicycle, but that was too expensive).
Richard has a general bonus when it comes to interacting with all of the possible spirit companions but certain interactions will not be possible due to his monetary restrictions. Due to this, Richard will be unable to have a perfect ending with any one spirit and has a very high chance of negative endings with more aggressive/malevolent spirits. Richard will have the easiest time of getting a perfect ending with three spirit companions (generally the best percentage possible) and has one of the lowest chances for an ending resulting in death but he is at a much higher chance of getting a possession-based negative ending. Richard gets along quite well with all spirits, excluding Self-Serving and Instigator spirits, who put him at risk for bad endings. He is one of only two protagonists who can have a physically-intimate positive ending with Jack the Gryphon spirit.
Stephanie (Stef)
Stephanie has always had trouble making friends but those she did count among her circle were valued greatly. Although she remains in contact with them to this day she has since moved out of her childhood home with aspirations of becoming a professional writer. While she hasn't settled on the nature of her craft, Steph has dabbled in short stories, poetry, and journalism; she's even been published in a few small magazines and had an editorial published in The Oregonian, Oregon's primary state newspaper. She's toyed with the idea of taking some creative writing classes at the local community college but her job barely gives her enough cash to make ends meet so she she's been skipping the formal education for now.
Stephanie's greatest strength is that she is incredibly well-spoken. Her ability to communicate isn't limited to the written word and she can be very eloquent whenever her surroundings necessitate that she carry on a conversation. Despite her capability to interact with others she is, nevertheless, much more comfortable interacting by correspondence, and tends to prefer to spend her time alone or one-on-one rather than in large crowds. If she applies herself she is incredibly charismatic, but she usually prefers to remain in the background.
Stephanie's greatest personality fault is that she is obsessive when it comes to her appearance. Although she isn't vain, per se, she is highly critical when it comes to making sure she presents herself well. She is almost obsessive-compulsive when it comes to cleanliness and she has incredible social anxiety if she can't check herself several times in the mirror before leaving the house. Steph broke out into tears and ran home during junior prom when punch was spilled on her dress and she remains as critical (if not more so) today.
Stephanie does far better with low keyed spirits than she does with the more dynamic ones. To this end, she will interact better with Protectors and Guides, but will be especially well-suited for interacting with Medved the Bear spirit and Tom the Behemoth (Rhino) spirit. She has an increased chance for any immaculate (non-adult) positive ending and has a generally lower chance for any negative ending, except for possession bad endings, especially those involving Trickster, Glamour, and Self-Serving spirits. Steph only one of two protagonists who will be able to resolve rivalries between her spirit companions and is also only one of two protagonists who can completely resolve the conflict within The Ancient One.
