A red letter day
#1 of The wonderful misadventures of Sergei Freeman
1 - A Red Letter Day
It was supposed to be a normal op. Evacuate civilians, eliminate all hostiles, and stop the lab equipment from breaking physics, or destroying the world. After that everything changed... Sorry, where's my common sense. I need to start from the beginning... When I was still on my base for the last time.
January first - New Year's Day - Canadian Forces temporary Camp located at -
79°59'40.8"N 85°50'05.9"W - Eureka airport, far northern Canada
"My name is Sergei "Tatersalad" Freeman, and I'm a Sergeant in the Canadian Joint Task Force Two, and last I checked I'm twenty, but I can't tell even what month it is up this far north, due to the weather, and the main reason for wanting to lead my squad into danger is that all my friends are dead and I want to join them. Major, do you need any other reasons for me to lead this suicide mission, other than you don't like me and you were called into work early, to this frozen hell.". I then noticed that Major Grenier fell asleep, so I tried waking him up, but he sleep-talked, "lead on Sarge, you're leading them.". Even though he was sleep-talking, he did say I could lead the team for the strike on the overrun science facility known as Arctic Five " Little Jungle" drift station, so I took that as undeniable reason to kill all of the terrorists holding the scientists and staff at gunpoint... After all, I do have a grudge after what they did a few years ago to my friends and family.
Three years ago - Three Hundred kilometers off the coast of Japan - Cruise Ship Saint Albert
"Ah believe the terrorists plan on killing the hostages held in the old ballroom tah free some men tah go looking for us, so ah think we should bring their fight to em', and rescue the hostages. And maybe we could spread out and find tah members of Alpha team while we're at it as well." whispered my brother in his slight Texas accent. Everybody nodded in agreement, even though a few members of Bravo team could barely understand him, due to his slight (but not full) Texas accent. We split up into pairs (I was with my older brother, because I was the only one who understood his accent), and once every five to ten minutes, we counted off our group numbers ( We only did it five times before giving up, because nobody wanted to hear Shaun [My brother] say "Fives"in his Texas accent), and then we made a rendezvous point at the helipad, where we landed onto the cruise ship with our parachutes, with Alpha team landing onto the outdoor pool deck. We met up five minutes later, but one group was missing... We had six groups of two people, and team six was missing. We waited two minutes until somebody who wasn't David or Sarah said over the radio, "We have your friends, and if you want to see them again, you'll surrender to us at the ballroom in less than thirty minutes. If not, their blood is on your hands. They're unharmed, well mostly, we shot them twice each, before they surrendered to us.". I knew he wasn't bluffing, because the message was repeated on the intercom, with one difference... I heard Sarah crying out in pain and David moaning in agony. We had to act now! Time was of the essence! Shaun said in hand signals, "I recommend that we communicate using hand signals.", I just couldn't resist flipping the security camera off and saying "Like that?", Sam snickered and said, "Couldn't resist taunting them, could you, Tatersalad? That stunt could've gotten the others killed, or worse!". Sam was right, I didn't want Sarah or David to get killed, Sarah just told me when we got here, that "David and I are going to get married after this, Because I found out I got pregnant two months ago, but, friends and family always come first... And I'm a workaholic too, so that helps!". Five minutes later, we saw a group of insurgents running across the deck on the opposite side of the pool deck. They started firing at us, and since our natural instincts to shoot back kicked in before common sense did, neither of our groups realized it was the other squad. All of the other squad was shot before we realized who they were. We killed our only backup in two hundred kilometers because of friendly fire. At least some of our squad was alive. Shaun, Sam, Sarah, David and I. We were set down to half our men (and a woman), in less then a minute. When we got to the ballroom, we heard David yell, "Get back, it's a trap!!!" Shaun heard it too late. He opened the door and an explosion rocked the ship, coming from the ballroom. I was blasted back onto a lifeboat, and I heard over the intercom, "We'll meet again Mr. Freeman." Before I blacked out, I released the lifeboat from it's davits on the ship.
Present - Two minutes away from Arctic Five drift station.
"Sir we're almost there, you've been staring out the door ever since we took off, are you okay?" Tucker asked. I nodded once and said, "Just remembering what happened last time I fought those people... I lost my brother, and lot's of friends that day... All of the hostages died in the explosion. I have to stop them this time. Without losing any hostages to die at the hands of terrorists."
Thirty minutes of searching the station, and almost all we found were dead terrorists, and dead hostages... And the occasional landmine. I knew something was watching us, so I said, "Somethin's ghostin us." I noticed a flicker of movement from inside one of the Jamesway huts to the left of us. When we broke in, somebody noticed us (actually two somebodies, a hostage who looked pregnant, and a terrorist whose voice I remembered) The terrorist started up a piece of lab equipment that started humming. That was bad... Very bad. Tucker could hear sounds at a much higher pitch and he goes crazy once he hears it (That one time Connor tried training his drug sniffing dog in front of him, Tucker gave him a broken jaw to make him stop. But when it stopped he started crying at what he did, because he couldn't stand hurting civilians, and Connor was a border patrol officer AND his son.), He went insane, and bullets started flying everywhere in front of us, hitting not only the pregnant looking hostage, but the terrorist, lab equipment and the parrot's bird cage. "Go to hell FATASS!" the parrot said in response to being shot at (I never understood why parrots swear a shitload, it must have been a sailor around them who taught them.).
"WHATTHEFUCKISWRONGWITHYOU! DOINOTLOOKPREGNANT!!!!" screamed the hostage, who then ran past us and outside into the minus 40 degree celsius weather, without a parka. The humming stopped and it was replaced by a screeching that made Tucker faint due to the soundwaves making his ears commit suicide.
I then noticed a shimmer in the middle of the room that looked like some asphalt after a hot Texas afternoon, yet it quickly condensed into a red orb. Then SOMEBODY (cough cough, Abbey, cough cough) thought it was a good idea to poke it with a stick... Or in this case, a lightning rod. Then a bolt of eerie black lightning shot out and charred Abbey, followed by at least another thirty two bolts in quick succession. That was all I counted before one struck me, and I blacked out. Before I blacked out, I noticed that instead of being burned to a crisp by the lightning, the others vanished in a pale green flash.
Where do you think Sergei's squad is heading to? The website I'm posting this on makes it pretty obvious.
