Valentine's Day
Valentine's is an odd day, is it not? It's so commercialised with roses, mushy cards, chocolates and restaurant deals that it detracts from the original meaning of the day. I guess there's a lot of other days through the year like this too, but I digress.
So many couples feel that this day, specifically the 14th of February each year, regardless of their anniversary date or the existence of their relationship all other 364 days of the year, they should try to be together. Quite odd no? Why specifically on this day do you have to be all lovey-dovey? Especially in what could arguably be termed as one of the more boring and dull parts of the seasonal calendar, where is the blue sky? The sunshine? The warmth to go have picnics in the park with your loved one?
Pfft.
Yet, here I am. Spooning my sweetheart, huddled together on the sofa under the thickest fleece blanket we could find. Mugs of cocoa in our hands still lightly popping as the bubbles of foam burst, the whipped cream melts and the marshmallows slowly succumb to a chocolate, diabetes-inducing grave.
Not wanting to seem like a greedy beast, I keep sneaking glances to see how much hot chocolate she might've drunk and time my consumption to be relatively like hers. Manners around a lady are important, you know? Though I do fear my drink might perhaps be getting a bit cold. We're watching a film or two on the TV, sharing each other's nude warmth on this frosty February day. Nude is comfier and more intimate I guess, though perhaps a little lewder than most would like...but then we're not most couples - we're us.
I shift my muzzle out the way as she reaches past my nose and puts her mug down on a coaster, I do the same, thinking she might need me to move. Instead she fiddles around to get the remote and promptly shuts the TV off, making my ears perk in surprise and glance down at her silvery muzzle in curiosity. In fairness, both of us have been yawning for the past half an hour or so, gradually paying less and less attention to the film.
"Everything alright hun?" I ask, giving her belly a slight squeeze of a hug and her supple cheek a soft kiss. She smiles, nods and meets my gaze, taking hold of my hands on her stomach and not letting them go, entwining her fingers into mine.
"Mmhmmm, just sleepy. I'm not really paying attention to that...and I don't think you were either." She smirks and gives me that wry, teasing look of hers I've seen so often. It never fails to make me blush.
"Uhh...truthfully? No. I think we could both do with a nap hmm?" I snicker a little, giving her another smooch as I pull the blanket tight back over us and wriggle to get comfy. She wriggles too, teasing me just a little with a flick of her tail and rub of her butt over my nethers making me stifle a whicker...hff...mares right?
It's nice just laying here, not much noise coming from the house, almost nothing coming from outside except maybe the occasional car or van. Peaceful. I nestle down, tucking my nose in against her neck. My nose twitches at her perfume, taking a slight sniff of the floral scent, blending with spices and her own unique fragrance. I relax my grip of her stomach but don't let go, just resting my hands there lightly intertwined with her own soft, delicate fingers.
She's such a kind girl, so honest yet so devilish when she wants to be, a real sweet gal who's young at heart. My heart flutters a little and I give her a little nuzzle with my flexible snoot. She gives a gentle hum and eases herself back into me, I re-tighten my hug and she sighs, closing her eyes and resting her head on a cushion I'd been leaning myself on. Sensing that we're both about to drift off or at least planning to do so, as the light outside slowly starts to fade in mid-afternoon characteristic for this time of year, I speak up again. Just a whisper this time.
"Hey...sugarcube?"
"Mmm?"
"Happy Valentine's day. I'm...glad I met you all that time ago, I just...don't have the words to explain sometimes how much I adore you...or even the actions sometimes...just...I lo-" I'm hushed by her index finger pressing rather hurriedly against my lips and I blush again, she giggles and slowly withdraws, snuggling back down to drift off to sleep with me under the blanket, fuelled by bellies full of warm sugary goodness and the feeling of each other's company.
"I know. I love you too."
