Caribbean Esther Ch. 4
#22 of Gifts
Here's chapter four of the story for LeiLani in which after one plot is exposed, another takes its place
On the day of the wedding, David was proud to present to the people their new queen, and they all cheered for joy for her. She looked to the side to see Nathan smiling up at her feeling so proud of the little otter girl he raised for so many years. Even in this joyous occasion, LeiLani never forgot her promise to Nathan about keeping her origins a secret. At the wedding reception, everyone was greeting the king and queen a few people at a time. Finally, the ice dragon himself, who had combed his red hair into a ponytail in the back with a snow-white overcoat, came to pay his congratulations on the royal couple. "How wonderful are the ways of the sea goddess that she should have raised up my little mermaid and made her queen," said the ice dragon showing his pride in the otter as she blushed. "Have you told anyone our secret?" he whispered softly so that only LeiLani could hear. "No," she said softly, "If you continue to call me your little mermaid, it will no longer matter." Nathan chuckled with a smile. "Will you not join me in the main area of the palace? I could have named to any post you desire." Nathan held LeiLani's hands in his own as he said, "The sea goddess will take care of me. Do you take care of your husband?" LeiLani smiled as Nathan bowed to the otter and shortly departed and the celebration had come to a close.
Later, while Nathan was delivering some ice to market, he noticed two royal servants exiting the palace. He recognized them as the royal food tasters to the king. The first one, a green lizard with red eyes and wearing a red toga, and the second was a weasel in a gray toga. Nathan heard them whispering softly to each other. "We must not procure it from the palace so nothing can be traced back to us," said the lizard. "The docks have apothecaries," said the weasel. The dragon paused and watched them. "Something's not right," he thought as he left the ice and followed secretly behind the two of them so that they would not spot him. They went to a shop near the docks and then came out with the weasel hiding something in his sleeve. After they left, Nathan went into the shop and looked for the desk clerk. "Can I help you, sir?" asked a rabbit who came up to the dragon. "Yes," he said, "I saw a lizard and weasel come in here and I was wondering what they purchased." The rabbit nodded and held up a jar to the dragon that said 'Lionfish Spines'. "Why would they buy lionfish spines off you?" asked Nathan confused. The rabbit just shrugged and replied, "Maybe they seek to poison someone. Very deadly, very quick." Nathan looked up at the rabbit in shock. "You sold them poison?" asked Nathan now showing a mixture of horror and anger, "A rabbit sells poison to the king's food tasters?" Then he grabbed the rabbit's shirt with both hands and shook him violently as he growled, "HAVE YOU ANY IDEA FOR WHOM IT MIGHT'VE BEEN INTENDED?!" Seeing that he had no time to lose, the dragon flew off as fast as his own wings could carry him back to the palace to warn LeiLani of the danger. He wrote a note for her and asked one of her handmaidens to deliver it but it was the panther, General Aiden who volunteered to bring the letter to her. He left Nathan and found LeiLani lounging alone in her chambers with the other handmaidens. When she saw Aiden, she dismissed them and the panther came forth to give her the message from Nathan. She opened it and after reading it, LeiLani's face became one filled with worry. "My lady? What is it?" asked Aiden. The otter looked to him. "A plot to kill the king," she said worriedly. "I'll notify the king at once, my lady," said the panther as he left to tell the king and the king had the royal food tasters brought forth. They struggled and fought against the soldiers at they fought. LeiLani came up to Aiden and whispered softly, "Make sure Nathan's name is entered in the royal records so that he may be properly rewarded by the king." The panther nodded and heard the punishment for the treacherous food tasters. "Have them sent on a boat to the Blood Lagoon," said David. Now, the Blood Lagoon was a terrible place where only the worst criminals are punished. In that place, there was a freshwater lagoon is infested by flesh eating piranhas that would eat the criminals all the way to the bone. The treacherous royal food tasters found this out the hard way.
Now it might seem that things are working out pretty well for LeiLani and Nathan. After all, they did save the king's life, but Jamie had something else up his sleeve. You see, nothing could be worse for Jamie then for his enemy Nathan to be on the king's good side. If the king liked Nathan more than him, it might jeopardize his position as royal advisor, which made the wolf second in command to the king. So Jamie came up with his own sneaky little plan.
Later, Jamie was in the throne room with the king as they were planning a voyage to seek out new islands to expand King David's kingdom. This was the perfect opportunity for Jamie to act out his scheme. "Pardon me, your majesty," he said, "But I feel it is my duty to inform you that there is a certain village within your kingdom full of people that keep themselves separate from everyone else. Their way of life is much different from that of ours and they refuse to obey the laws of the king. And I even heard they've been looking for a new king to over throw you." King David was shocked when he heard this. "Well, what can we do?" asked the king and Jamie grinned mischievously. "If I may so bold, your majesty, I say make a royal edict that declares to have them all thrown into the Blood Lagoon." Jamie could see that his plan was working for he saw the king remove his signet ring and hand it to him. "Very well," said the king, "Do what you can to ensure the safety of our kingdom." Jamie bowed low. "To hear is to obey, my king," he responded. And so, Jamie, royal advisor to King David, declared that within six weeks from the issued date, all the men, women and children in LeiLani's village would be taken and thrown into the Blood Lagoon and to plunder all their possessions for the sake of the crown.
When Nathan saw heard of the edict, he was horrified and all the other villagers wept and wailed in sorrow and despair. Nathan was especially distraught. He hurried into his hut and grabbed a piece of paper and started writing a letter to LeiLani explaining all that happened. He gave it to Aiden, who was standing at the gate. The panther delivered the paper to her and she was deeply saddened. "But what does he want me to do?" she asked and the panther looked up sadly. "He... he said you must go to the king uninvited," he said. "What?" she gasped, "Doesn't he know what happens to people who appear before the king uninvited?" Aiden nodded. "He told me you'd say that," said the panther, "He also asked me to tell you this as well: 'I can't tell you what to do, but I can tell you this. You wanted to know why you were here and why you became queen. I told you the sea goddess has a reason. LeiLani, perhaps she put you here for such a time as this. Perhaps this is the reason. LeiLani, you never have to be afraid to do what's right.' And that's all he said." LeiLani thought for a moment and sighed. "Tell Nathan to gather all the people in our village and fast and pray for me and not to eat anything for three days," she said, "My maids and I will do the same. Then, I go before the king unsummoned even though it's against the law. And if I perish... I perish." The panther nodded with tears in his eyes. He deeply cared for his queen but he obeyed nonetheless. The sea otter knelt down on her knees and prayed the sea goddess to grant her the courage to save her people.
