26- Guardian (Finale)
#28 of The Legend of Rift Book II: Resurrection
Warfang, the Great City of dragons, home to thousands of reptilian beasts and moles. The city was busy today, and Rift was nervous. He didn't leave all those months ago on preferable terms, and he was supposed to walk on in and resume his Guardianship.
"Rift, you can do this, you are still the permanent Fire Guardian." Silvus put a paw on his shoulder. "If you want, we can look for Spyro and the others."
The orange dragon nodded, directing the group to follow him. They came to a small medical building and walked in. Five dragons turned and went wide eyed. Spyro, Cynder, Ferrossa, Tygor, and Mera all ran up to him, hugging him tightly.
His heart dropped as he saw the large scar on Ferossa's face, the direct reason he had left the city in the first place. He tried to apologize, only to be stopped with a big hug, the dragoness forgiving him. Kara ran to her, the long lost sisters reunited.
Silvus talked with Spyro and Cynder, catching up on the last few years since their own adventure. Tygor smiled and walked to Rift, Ferossa's tail in his. The Earth dragon was proud to tell Rift that Mera and Ferossa had both taken him as their mate. Rift pulled Sithris to him, announcing that the black drake and Kara were both with him.
Finally, Rift told of his adventure, how he had met and fallen for Sithris, resurrected Kara, and how he was brought back after stopping Keltin once and for all. The now large group smiled at their circle of family. Spyro coughed to catch everyone's attention.
"While I'm glad to have you all here, we have a huge problem. Carmine, the self proclaimed "Greatest Fire Guardian," is trying to end our alliance with the Cheetahs. Prowlus tried to reason with him, but that dastardly dragon is convinced that we are too superior to need the alliance."
Sithris shrank back, memories of how the dragon had tortured him in some sick pleasure. He wanted nothing to to with him. Rift kissed him reassuringly, turning to the door.
"Well, we should give him our two cents then."
"Master Carmine, you must understand that we've been allied with the Cheetahs for a millennia, ending it could spell disastrous for both our species." Cyril tried to plead, the Ice Guardian's words, as were the opinions of hundreds of dragons in the courtroom, falling on deaf ears.
"Not only is Cyril, Volteer, and all other Elemental Guardians with me on this, but ninety percent of the Warfang population have spoken out against ending our partnership. End this madness Carmine!" Terrador struggled to keep his anger in check, knowing that as the interim Fire Guardian, Carmine had the final voice on the matter.
"My word is final!" The red and black dragon roared in rage. "I will not stand to work with that horrid Prowlus any longer, and I will personally relieve any of you of your Guardianship should you try to intervene."
"Stop the crap Carmine, you don't know what you're doing."
The room turned their heads, a small group if dragons walking forward, Rift leading them. He stared Carmine in the eyes, distaste on his mind. "You call yourself a great dragon, yet you put yourself above all others. You aren't being a Guardian, you're being a dictator."
Carmine growled, walking over to the orange dragon. A quick glare at Sithris sent the black dragon hiding behind his friends. He looked back to Rift, snarling.
"You finally came back, and you brought all of these whelps with you. Spyro and Cynder, the fake hero's that have both tried to destroy the city. Mera, the bitch that lay with a human. Tygor, the guardian candidate that was too scared to fight. Ferossa, the worst slut I ever filled. Silvus, the Messenger that lacks his horns. And you other four." Carmine pointed to Zapras. "I don't know you, but seeing as you are with all them, you're part of their treason." The fluffy life dragon growled in discomfort.
The red dragon looked at Kara. "You, you must be that lovely Kara the orange pest always talked about. Once he's been locked away forever, I would be honored to claim you as my mate."
Kara hissed angrily. "As if, you probably would be too small to feel anyways."
The words would have struck a nerve had Carmine not already turned his attention to Sithris. The black dragon trembled in fear, flashbacks of blades in his flesh. "Black bastard, I cannot go a day without seeing these runes you dug into my scales. You will die a painful death."
Rift got up in the other fire dragon's face, having had enough of his mates and family being threatened. "Leave them out of this. This is between us. Ever since that accident when I scarred your eye, you've gone mad. Let us end this now."
Silvus ran over to the guardians and whispered to them, smiling as they nodded. He cleared his throat and spoke loud enough for everyone to hear. "Drakes and 'Nesses, the guardians have decided that if Carmine wishes to become the permanent Fire Guardian, he must win in combat against my cousin. Everyone please move away so they may settle their differences."
The crowd backed away as did Rift's friends. With a quick kiss to the orange dragons lips, Kara and Sithris joined them. The orange dragon closed his eyes and took a deep breath, his ears picking up the cocky laugh of his opponent. Carmine was a few years older, way bigger, and in pure physicality, had the upper hand. He did however lack in intelligence, where Rift was always able to overtake him."
With a roar, Carmine lashed out, swinging his paw at the orange dragon. Rift deflected the attack, his tail stopping the claws from connecting to his face. He flicked the paw away with a small nudge.
The two backed up and charged, horns locking in a challenge of power. Carmine's size immediately gave him the upper hand, pushing the orange dragon back. Rift smirked, lowering their heads lower. With a grunt, the smaller dragon jerked his head sideways.
Snap!
Everyone watched in shock. The sudden jerk resulted in the horns of the bigger dragon giving in, shattering into pieces. Carmine slammed into the ground, dazed from his quick defeat. Rift watched a moment before turning to the crowd and his friends, everyone cheering for him.
Carmine slowly pulled himself up, staring at what remained of his once proud horns. He looked at the dragon he had lost to, and charged. He didn't care anymore, he wanted the orange dragon dead.
"YOU'RE FUCKING DONE!"
Before he made it to Rift, the red dragon was frozen solid, Silvus smirking at his handiwork. He gave the now ice statue a tap and chuckled. "I wanted to do that for so long."
Rift smiled and looked at the Guardians. Volteer, Cyril, and Terrador padded up to him and bowed. The large earth drake spoke deeply. "Welcome home, Guardian of Fire."
One year later...
Rift yowled tiredly and slowly opened his eyes. The sun came in from the entrance to his cave, and the heat warmed his scales nicely. The pressure all around him reminded him of the two beautiful dragons he called his mates. Kara, his childhood friend that he traveled the Dragon Realms to revive, and Sithris, the black drake that had stayed by his side through it all. He loved them.
A slight glimmer at the back of the cave reminded him of the life the three had created. Sitting on a warm pedestal was a shimmering green egg.
The orange dragon snuck out of the dragon pile and padded outside. He admired the clear sparkling lake he had live by for a majority of his life. His trance was broken by the flapping of his cousin.
Rift smiled and gave Silvus a big hug. "Thanks for agreeing to keep an eye on them, it really does mean a lot to me cousin."
Silvus waved a paw nonchalantly. "I'm happy to. A certain guardian has been focusing on finishing Zapras' training, so there's not much to do. These two are fun to hang with. Now no more small chat, you're supposed to be heading to work."
The orange dragon smiled and nodded. With a jump, the Fire Guardian was airborne, heading to Warfang. He had no idea what his future would hold, but for everyone that depended on him, he would charge head on.
