Chapter 6: Adultress
#6 of The Mating Season: Zaldon's Story
Chapter 6: Adulteress
The next morning, the entire village seemed to know that Zaldon liked cock.
Zaldon wasn't sure how it happened or even how he came to be standing in the village square, covering his ears as stones were hurtled at him. He sobbed brokenly, his tail between his legs, and blood was dribbling from his nose by the time Bayne managed to intervene.
Bayne had been on patrol duty when Zaldon was snatched up off the streets by a group of warriors and dragged to the village square as the call was given: "TAIL CHASER! TAIL CHASER! HE MUST BE STONED!" Wolves rushed from their huts to participate, and young pups hurled sharp pebbles and garbage at Zaldon as he was dragged along by his ear, shouting in nasty, sing-song voices, "COCK SUCKER! COCK SUCKER! ZALDON IS A BUTT FUCKER!" Amidst such taunting and noise, Zaldon was dragged through the mud and the snow to the village square, where the entire village proceeded to stone him. He was a crumpled white mass on the ground when he looked up through eyes blinded by tears and blood and saw the blurry image of his father rushing to him.
"Are you all mad? He's just a child!" Bayne bellowed, scooping a shivering Zaldon into his arms.
But the attackers only shouted that if Bayne was happy to die with his son, then that's what would happen. The rocks, the screams, and the taunts kept flying, and they didn't stop until a voice bellowed out for them to. Huddled in his father's bulging arms, Zaldon looked up and couldn't believe it: Eloein had stopped the stoning.
Eloein moved into the center of the village square, his great paws on his hips, and the crowds shied back to let him through. He turned in a circle, glowering at all, his earring glinting in the pale sunlight. He waved grandly in Zaldon's direction and demanded of the crowds, "You would stone a child? A child you have known all of your lives? A child who bears no solid proof of being a tail chaser?"
"We were told he liked cock. What more proof do we need!" shouted a male in the crowd.
"The traditions decree it: he must die!" shouted a female.
"He mustn't!" Eloein yelled over them. "For he is a child: we do not stone the innocent! Here is what we must do."
The crowds waited as Eloein stood beside his brother, and clapping a paw on Bayne's shoulder, he announced, "Zaldon must be banished from the village! While we will not burn the mark of the lone wolf on his head, he will no longer be welcome here."
"Eloein!" Bayne cried. "How can you -- he's just a child! Zaldon isn't a tail chaser! How can you believe such filthy lies?"
"But he is a tail chaser, Bayne," Eloein insisted. He smiled at Zaldon and added, "Aren't you, boy?"
Everyone looked at Zaldon, and when he whimpered and did not speak, they immediately took his silence as a confirmation. Bayne dropped his son to the ground in disgust. Zaldon climbed to his feet and stood before his father, his head bowed, his nose dribbling blood. He bore it without crying when his father suddenly smacked him.
"Get out of my sight," Bayne whispered. "No filthy tail chaser will dwell in my home."
"Bayne!" Joli shouted, her eyes wide in shock. She forced her way to the front of the crowd and pulled Zaldon against her. "How can you treat your own son this way?" she demanded, scowling.
"Silence, bitch!" Bayne snapped. "Don't you know better than to challenge a male in public?" His muscles tightened in his anger and his eyes were so fierce that Joli swallowed her angry words and she too looked at the ground, her eyes burning.
Suddenly unable to take it any longer, Zaldon tore loose of his mother and ran home.
Zaldon would now have to leave the village whether he wanted to or not. But despite the old tradition of hurling one's tail chaser son out into the snow, Zaldon wasn't immediately cast from his father's hut: Joli persuaded Bayne to let Zaldon stay. And so later that night, Zaldon was in the front room of the hut because he couldn't sleep: he was far too miserable and his parents were making those noises again. He heard movement behind him and knew without having to turn that Lynny was standing in the curtained doorway leading off the hall, rubbing a fist in his eye, no doubt, and yawning bitterly.
"Go back to bed, Lynny," Zaldon said. He was kneeling at the little table where his mother's wooden carvings were on display. He pinched a tiny carving of a wolf in his fingers and made it "run" across the table.
"But I can't sleep, Zaldy," Lynny whined, rubbing a fist in his eye just as Zaldon had supposed.
Zaldon glanced irritably at his little brother. The snot-nosed pup. Zaldon wanted to box Lynny's ears when he didn't obey him but came to him across the room, his lip sticking out in a pout. Lynny dropped wretchedly on the floor beside Zaldon and leaned against him, giving a little whimper. Still playing with the wooden wolf, Zaldon heaved a sigh and rolled his eyes. He patted his little brother's head to comfort him but went back to playing. Zaldon had to remind himself to be patient with his little brother: Lynny was only five.
"They've been making those noises for a long time now," Lynny further complained. "I wanna sleep, Zaldy! What're they doin' in there anyway!"
"I don't know," Zaldon lied, "but Dad said never to go look."
"Zaldy?" Lynny whispered after a pause.
Zaldon marched a carving of a rabbit across the table and answered absently, "What?"
"Where are you gonna go? Daddy's kickin' you out. Can I come with you?"
"I'm going away with Mom. Remember? She hasn't told Dad anything yet. I think she's trying to -- er -- get him tired first."
"Oh."
There was another pause, then Lynny squeaked worriedly, "Zaldon?"
"What?"
"Are you really ah tail chaser?"
"Yes!"
"Good. Because I beat the snot outta Eno for tellin' the whole village like that --"
"I told you not to do that!" Zaldon cried, pausing to scowl at his little brother.
"I know, but Eno just makes me so sick. He shoulda been the one gettin' stoned, not you. He does awful stuff like that all the time, gettin' everyone else in trouble . . . I think I broke his arm. Aunty Arorta was wailing that I'd almost killed 'im."
Zaldon said nothing and went back to playing with the carvings. They both heard their mother cry out: a loud, shrill moan of pleasure that echoed through the hut. Then they heard their father's grunting getting louder and fiercer.
"I'm gonna look!" Lynny burst in sudden frustration. "I'm tired of bein' kept awake and not knowin' what for!" So saying, Lynny sprang up and hurried behind the curtain.
Zaldon groaned but followed his little brother behind the curtain and up the shadowy hall, hissing, "Lynny! Lynny, you little brat, get back here!"
But Zaldon was too late. He saw his little brother standing already outside their parent's bedroom. Lynny's little ears were flat on his head in his curiosity as he pulled the curtain aside with one finger and peered inside the bedroom. He gasped at what he saw. Zaldon stood there grinding his teeth, wanting to snatch his little brother away by the tail, but he heard his mother's screams intensify in the bedroom and his curiosity was aroused in spite of himself. Was Bayne, in fact, doing to Joli what Eloein had?
Zaldon went to the curtain and peered in as well and his entire body went rigid in his shock: his father had his mother's leg on his shoulder and he was sliding his cock in and out of her vagina! He was doing those horrible things to Joli, just as Eloein had. Was this her punishment for defying Bayne in public? Joli was wreathing and screaming on the sheets, and Zaldon saw with horror that his father was groping his mother's breasts, pawing them, even leaning down to suck them! He bristled in his shock, and his horror knew no bounds when his mother suddenly sprang upright and sank her teeth in their father's neck. Bayne gathered Joli into his arms in a frenzy and hunched his back over her, driving his penis deeply, sharply, up and inside. It seemed to Zaldon and Lynny that the deeper Bayne drove himself into his wife, the louder Joli screamed, until she screamed out, "OH -- OH, GOD -- MELGO!"
Zaldon saw his father stop almost abruptly. He leaned back and looked down at Joli, who lay under him, wide-eyed in her fear. Zaldon and Lynny gasped when their father suddenly gave a growl and struck Joli hard across the face. She let out a choked scream as he dragged her up by the mane, then smacked her again. They gasped when their mother crumpled to the floor, blood dribbling from her nose.
Zaldon flew into a rage. He burst into the room -- startling both his parents, even Lynny -- and he leapt on his father, sinking his teeth in Bayne's arm. Bayne easily pried his small son off and smacked him too. Zaldon rolled across the floor and would have gotten up to lunge again, but he felt his mother grab his arm.
"No, Zaldy! Stop this now!" Joli hissed.
Zaldon knelt there with his chest heaving, glaring at his father, and he saw that Bayne had tears in his eyes even as those black eyes were narrowed in hatred upon his mother.
Joli had pulled herself upright and was leaning heavily on one arm, her long mane tumbling down in her face. Zaldon glanced anxiously at his mother. She was breathless and blood was dripping from her nose. She looked up at Zaldon, still gasping, and whispered for him to go to his room and not come out.
"I'm not leaving you!" Zaldon vowed.
His mother cupped his face: "Zaldon, do as I say! Go and look after your brother!"
Lynny! Zaldon had almost forgotten. He looked over his shoulder to find Lynny standing in the doorway horror-stricken. Zaldon did not blame him: their parents, once so madly in love, were striking each other! Zaldon glanced again at his mother's bloody nose and didn't move.
"Do as your mother says, Zaldon," Bayne whispered, his eyes fixed on Joli.
Zaldon couldn't believe it when he saw his parents glare at each other.
"No!" Zaldon cried at once.
"Fine," Bayne snapped. "Then we'll have this out in front of you both! Get in here, Lynny!" It was a snarled command, and Lynny hurried into the room with a start. He hovered just behind Zaldon, peering at his parents in wonder, in tears.
"I slapped your mother," Bayne grimly announced, "because she's a two-timing whore!"
Zaldon and Lynny gasped when Bayne lurched up from the sleeping furs, and grabbing Joli by the arms, he dragged her to her feet and shook her.
"Who the hell is Melgo!" Bayne snarled, and Zaldon was terrified by the flashing of his father's fangs. He felt Lynny whimper beside him and wrapped an arm around his brother, pulling him to one corner of the room. He knew better than to lunge at his father again, but Zaldon wasn't going to leave his mother alone either!
"Leave Mommy alone!" Lynny sobbed.
"Shut up!" Bayne growled, then shaking his wife again, he demanded, "Who is Melgo? Tell me or so help me god --"
"Who is Melgo? A better male than you!" Joli shouted suddenly and threw her husband off.
Bayne stood with his paws limp at his sides, staring miserably at his wife. His body was tense with anger, but his black eyes looked at Joli without a hint of malice in their expression when he muttered, "How? How can this be? And why? I love you, damn it!"
"You don't!" Joli shrieked, tears in her gray eyes. "Don't say those words to me anymore -- they mean nothing! Nothing!"
Bayne winced. "But --" he held open his paws in helpless appeal. "But I love you . . ." he whispered, as if that should have been enough. Apparently, it wasn't.
Joli turned her back. "I don't love you, Bayne. Not anymore. I'm leaving you and I'm taking the pups --"
"Over my dead body!" Bayne snarled, taking a halting step forward. He wrenched his wife around by the arm, and stabbing a finger at his sons, he barked, "You won't take anything from this hut except those stupid carvings I was fool enough to let you sell outside the village! Now tell those boys what you've done! Tell them! Or so help me god, I'll smack you again!" Bayne snarled the words viciously at his wife and shoved her toward their sons by the neck.
Zaldon and Lynny huddled in the corner. Lynny was sniffling and crying, but as Zaldon held his little brother to his chest, he was glowering.
"Boys?" said Joli, kneeling down. Her pale lashes fluttered out tears as she sniffed and said gently, "Mommy has been -- been seeing someone else."
"Melgo?" Lynny said darkly. "Why would you do that to Daddy? And now you have to leave us! Now you have to go away!"
Joli bowed her head a moment, then lifted it and said through her tears, "Lynny, honey, please try to understand -- adult problems are a little c-complicated --"
"What's so complicated about keeping your legs shut?" Bayne demanded derisively behind his wife.
Joli squeezed her eyes shut and ground her teeth, then whirled around and started pummeling Bayne with her fists. Bayne grabbed his wife by the wrists and dragged her out of the room. Zaldon and Lynny hurried after, shouting, crying for their parents to stop fighting. Bayne lifted his struggling wife clear off her feet, and carrying her out into the snow, he dumped her there in the streets. Joli sat in the snow on her tail, her breasts heaving, glowering up at her husband. She heard Zaldon and Lynny sniffling and crying in the hut as her husband filled the doorway, glowering down at her.
"If you want this Melgo so badly, then go and be with him!" Bayne snarled, his chest heaving, but as he was turning away, he felt his wife's arms lock around his leg. Bayne looked down in disgust.
"Don't leave me out here!" Joli whispered, squeezing her eyes shut. "They'll s-stone me, Bayne! Please!"
Bayne stared down at his wife a long moment, then something softened in his eyes, and he helped Joli to her feet. "It's no more than you deserve," he whispered even as he took her into his arms, even as he buried his face in her neck. "I should leave you out here for the whole fucking village to stone. But damn you -- I love you too much to do it!" And Joli felt a stab of guilt when Bayne's arms trembled around her.
"Why, Joli?" he whispered. "Why?"
"I knew I didn't love you anymore," she answered, "when you threw Zaldon down to the snow like that. When you slapped my son for being a tail chaser -- I knew!"
Bayne pulled back and stared at his wife, pain in his eyes. "But the customs of the winter village --"
"Are no longer mine." Joli shook her head: Bayne always clung mindlessly to his petty traditions! But then again, he had never been a male who could think much for himself. "I'm taking Zaldon and we're leaving this place! We're going somewhere where my son won't be stoned for who he is! Where he won't be dragged through the streets while other pups -- once his friends! -- hurl garbage at him and spit on him! That will never happen to Zaldon again!"
Bayne stared at his wife a long moment, and then slowly, he nodded. "If this Melgo makes you happy, Joli . . . then -- then go to him." He said the last words with great difficulty, and closing his eyes, he swallowed.
"You mean that?" Joli said in amazement. "They will shame you if you let me walk away. They will say your will is weak. They will spit on you in the streets."
Bayne looked at Joli with love shining in his eyes. "Then so be it."
Joli shook her head. "But . . ."
"Would you rather I let them stone you?" Bayne said with a half-smile.
Joli laughed. "No. I would not."
Bayne offered his paw. "Then come back inside. And tomorrow, go to Melgo. But tonight . . . you are mine."
Joli smiled, and taking Bayne's paw, she and her husband knelt in front of their sons. Zaldon felt an immense relief when his father ruffled his ears and pinched playfully at Lynny's cheek. He sadly wiped away the blood on Zaldon's ears and cupped his son's face apologetically with one paw.
"Don't be frightened anymore, boys," Bayne told his sons. "Go to sleep now. And in the morning, everything will be fine."
