Misconceptions
CH 1
It was a warm day when Maxillian, or Max as he was known to most, awoke. He had a late night and was often known to sleep in when he had nothing of any importance to see to. Most of the other humans had long been at work and were indeed tired as he stretched and yawned in the soft light coming through the curtain. Being the son of an Ambassador to a nation that was hated at worst and misunderstood at best was not the highest station one could hold in the realm. However, Max could at least say his house wouldn't blow over when a strong storm came since it was carved right out of the side of the mountain the capital city was built on. He slid from his bed and walked naked to the corner where he had a bowl and some crude soap to clean up a little and get ready for what was left of the day. After splashing some of the cool water in the worst areas and cleaning up as best he could, he soaked his short, brown hair in the rest to try and beat some of the heat.
In all honesty it wasn't really his house. However it did belong to his father as part of his station and was necessarily located very close to the palace in case the King needed to consult him. Though it didn't serve much purpose since his father moved to live with the unicorns he was ambassador to and left his son to keep up the place. It had been right at a year since he had last seen his mother and father and he knew they would be returning soon to brief the King personally on issues that could not be sent by messenger. Max smiled as he thought about telling them the good news of the red haired maiden he intended to marry. He loved Jessica truly. As truly as any one person can. But better yet she loved him back and he knew it. After all how many women would lower their station for any reason. In fact that's what would happen after she promised to marry him. Unlike the previous King his son thought that Max's father William was too close to the unicorns. He even accused him of being more concerned about their welfare than Tryvinia's. In fact these very tensions were what caused William to move his wife to Gladen, realm of the unicorns, with him. Though William needed his son to stay behind as his eyes and ears in Tryvania. He was in fact being groomed to take over for his father one day though he had not yet travelled to Gladen. All he heard were tales of its beauty from travelling traders and merchants. People's opinions being what they are though, it did not favor someone to be in the ill will of King Darnon. If he didn't like you it was near treason for others to do so.
Now the unicorns on the other hand were a different matter that no one really understood, mostly because they didn't care to. They walked on two legs and were nearly human except for their equine features such as their fur, manes, tails, ears, heads, and hooves for feet. There was talk that it was all part of ancient magic having made them and the other intelligible animal races that way. But few if any actually believed the old tales. Many just believed they were that way because all "intelligent" creatures seemed to be human like in shape as well. This similar shape actually created a rather lucrative market for slaves on the rare occasion one happened to be caught and assuming one could find a buyer with enough money to spare for the rights to the creature.
Max sighed heavily as he rolled the black ribbon around his hand softly. It would be used in their ceremony when they pledged their love to each other. The black symbolized constancy and steadfastness, the traditional theme in the culture for unending love. Finally he got up from the little stool at the basin and dressed himself in the black tunic with a red chevron, the symbol of his family, and some simple brown woven pants and leather shoes. Since there wasn't anything he needed to do today he thought he might pay Jessica a visit since it was getting on to dinner time and set of down the road. His 5' 10' toned frame seemed to glide down the steep street carved in the mountain. Anyone could see he was a man in love waiting to see his goddess.
CH 2
It was oddly quiet at Jessica's house when Max arrived. There was a candle burning inside though so he figured she must still be in as he decided he would try to surprise her. Quietly he crept up to the door, knowing she never kept it locked. Honestly no one inside the city's walls did lock their doors since there was such little crime. With a silent count to himself he burst into the door with a roar but as he did something very solid whacked him in the back of the head and sent him crumpling to the floor. He lay there for a moment groaning as strong hands seized his wrists and bound them behind his back.
"What are you doing? I'm an ambassadors son let me go!" Max demanded as a heavy boot pressed down on the back of his neck
"Quiet you traitor! Every word you speak is like acid to my ears." The lead officer said with as much malice as he seemed to be able to muster.
"What are you talking about? I have done nothing." He groaned as the pressure on his neck increased until he stopped struggling and the boot, along with himself was lifted.
"That's not what the King said and his word is the law. Besides with the evidence he has on you and your father your trial will be quick I assure you. Now, no more questions or will skewer you and say it happened when you fought back and attacked us. Got it?" The officer said as he led the four other guards back to a holding cell until he could be taken to the palace the next day.
Max was so sure they meant their threats as they marched through the darkened town. It didn't take them long to reach the guard shack as he began to think that maybe this entire thing was a scare tactic by King Darnon. Surely this would all be sorted out in the courts the next morning but even for a King this was going too far. His heart burned with rage and he wondered not only where they had taken Jessica but what they were doing with her during all this as he knelt chained to one of the strong support beams in the floor. The entire place had a dank musty smell to it. No doubt because of its only temporary use since it was pretty bare save for two small tables and a stove. Suddenly Maxillian felt a hand on his upturned ass groping him and beginning to pull his pants down as he turned around and roared. His shackled feet useless as he tried to kick the pitted face of the disgusting guard molesting him until the officer's heavy boot that was on his neck thudded into the lowly guards ribs. A dull thud was heard as the aged man groaned in pain and collapsed on the floor clutching his side.
"Don't worry their only bruised. But touch another prisoner like that again and I will have you sent out on a rail. You know that is only allowed with convicted criminals." He said not seeming to pay Max any attention as the other guard continued to whine like a puppy that had just been disciplined and they both retook their seats at the small tables about the room. Max knew he needed to try and rest as best as he could. He was going to need all his energy tomorrow to keep his calm as he closed his eyes and thought of Jessica. Her lovely lips smiling back at him in a green gown, pushing her small breasts up just enough to make a teasing bit of cleavage. He smiled warmly to himself as he drifted off to be with her.
