Pokemon - To Catch Them All - On The Way To Vermilion City
#5 of Pokemon - To Catch Them All
Leo leaves Cerulean and makes his way to Vermilion, meeting all sorts of Pokemon and people along the way.
Since I'd now beaten the second gym, I decided to update my mum on how my journey was going, no doubt she would want to know whether I was taking care of myself. She answered the phone almost immediately, "Leo, it's good to hear you, how is your journey going? Are you catching many Pokemon? Where are you now?" I couldn't even reply fast enough to match her enthusiasm. "At the moment I'm in Cerulean City and just defeated the gym leader Misty. I've been catching every new Pokemon I've come across and been having so much fun."
Mother laughed at hearing how well the journey was going, "so I guess that means your next going to Vermilion City, I think that's where the next gym is." I nodded but then realised she wouldn't be able to see me nodding. "Yeah, I'll make my way there, from what I know it's going to be a long while. So, I'll stock up on supplies before I go." I couldn't see her but I knew my mum was happy that I was being so careful and resourceful on my journey. Acting as a responsible adult.
At that we ended our conversation and I did as I said I would, I immediately healed my Pokemon at the centre and once again congratulated Pikachu and Ivysaur on doing so well against such a powerful adversary. Then I headed to the Pokemart where I brought several more Pokeballs as I knew the journey was going to be a long one. After that was done, I headed south through Cerulean City around some houses and reached Route 5, one look at the route told me this route was going to be interesting, dropping down ledges.
Heading onwards I jumped down the ledges carefully and soon spotted some wild Pokemon, some I'd seen and some I'd never caught yet. Pidgey's were flying through the air and Rattata's skittered around the route, observing carefully for any dangers. I walked through the grass looking around for anything new and soon was approached my a Growlithe. It barked ferociously at me, and clawed at the ground a posture that meant this Growltihe was clearly challenging me. "Come out Geodude!" Geodude was ready for battle against the Fire type.
"Geodude use Rock Throw!" Geodude threw several rocks at the Growlithe, but Growlithe dodged around the rocks before landing an Ember, yes the attack barely fazed Geodude but I was really impressed with the speed and power that this particular Growlithe showed. "Geodude use Rollout instead!" At that Geodude curled into a ball and began rolling at high speeds to the Growlithe, who once again jumped right over Geodude. Not to be outdone, Geodude spun around and tried once again to strike the Growlithe. Eventually thanks to Rollout giving Geodude some more speed, he managed to score a super effective hit against Growlithe, which finished the battle.
"Pokeball go!" At that the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Growltihe has been registered to your Pokedex. Growlithe the Puppy Pokemon, a Fire Type. Extremely loyal, it will fearlessly bark at any opponent to protect its own trainer form harm." At that I released Growltihe and saw a complete change in his personality, once caught, he became like the Pokemon said, a loyal puppy that followed me everywhere and attacked anything that dared to even come close to his trainer. I did have to try and calm Growlithe down when he got too excited at chasing random Pokemon in the grass as he may accidentally get hurt.
Growlithe and I continued searching through the grass and suddenly Growlithe shot forwards and was hot on the trail of something. Following Growlithe we came to see another Fire Type Pokemon, a Vulpix. I had never seen one before and I had believed they were extremely rare Pokemon. Vulpix had always appeared as such an elegant and beautiful Pokemon when I'd seen them, so I was pretty much enamoured with it. No too mention they were also quite powerful too.
"Alright then, come on out..." Before I could even release a Pokemon to battle the Vulpix, Growlithe had decided he wanted to battle the Vulpix for me. "You want to battle Growlithe?" I asked curiously and he turned to me and nodded, his tongue poking out the corner of his mouth in his excitement at his first battle with a trainer. "Okay then Growlithe use Bite!" Vulpix, dodged using Quick Attack and then struck Growlithe from behind. Growlithe was expecting such an attack and turned to face the surprised Vulpix and landed an effective Bite. Vulpix, tried to break free using Ember, right in Growlithe's face, but Growlithe took no damage at all. Rotom revealed that Growlithe actually had the ability Flash Fire which increased Growlithe's Fire Type moves when he was hit with a Fire Type move. Eventually Growlithe released the Vulpix and I threw a Pokeball.
One shake, two, three and the capture was confirmed. "Vulpix has been registered to your Pokedex, Vulpix the Fox Pokemon a Fire Type. As each tail grows, its fur becomes more lustrous. When held it becomes slightly warm." When I released Vulpix, I grabbed a Potion I had brought and gently sprayed Vulpix, healing him from any damage he had taken. Vulpix hadn't expected to be healed and smiled warmly, seemingly I had earned Vulpix's respect for such a simple thing. Growlithe and Vulpix even got along well with each other, probably since they were both Fire Types.
Exploring further down the ledges, I saw a Jigglypuff, I knew battling Jigglypuff would be difficult as I could almost guarantee it would know Sing a move which would cause any Pokemon that heard it to fall asleep. I checked each and every one of my Pokemon and determined the one who could weaken Jigglypuff fast enough would be a Poison Type like Nidorino or Nidorina, even Beedrill or Gloom and Weepinbell. There were other choices but those seemed the most effective.
"Come on out Nidorino!" Nidorino roared as he appeared and saw his opponent "use Poison Sting!" At that Jigglypuff was pelted with several Poison Stings before it could even begin singing. "Pokeball go!" At that the Pokeball shook once, twice, three times and the capture was confirmed. "Jigglypuff has been registered to your Pokedex. Jigglypuff the Balloon Pokemon, a Fairy Type. By freely changing the wavelength of its voice, Jigglypuff sings a mysterious melody sure to make any listener happy." I was happy at yet another capture, but before I could celebrate I felt something land on my hand.
When I looked upward to see what had landed on my head, maybe a random Pidgey or a Spearow even, there was nothing there. Then something prodded against my leg and I looked down seeing nothing at all. I had begun to get very confused, but not annoyed, even if this was a prank of some kind. This kind of skill was impressive, however, I decided if I couldn't find it maybe if all my Pokemon searched we could see what was prodding me.
"Come out everyone!" At that my current team appeared, that being, Wartortle, Charmeleon, Ivysaur, Nidorino, Growlithe and Vulpix appeared wondering why each of them had been called out and I then explained the situation. "Something has been bothering me, but I can't find it." Before I could elaborate the Pokemon began gesturing wildly at my head and I looked upwards seeing a Pokemon, when it realised it had been spotted. The Pokemon teleported away and reappeared in front of me.
At the target being found, I recognised it as an Abra, quite a rare Psychic Type Pokemon. My Pokemon began trying to catch the Abra, but this Abra was rather finicky and managed to teleport away from each of them. I even threw a Pokeball when I thought the Abra was distracted, however, it laughed and teleported away. Too be frank, I believed that this specific Abra just wanted to have some fun at me and my Pokemon's expense.
Eventually all the teleports seemed to have tired the Abra down and he came to rest on my head once more. Taking the opportunity I tapped the Abra on the head and the capture was quickly confirmed. Probably because as mentioned the Abra had exhausted itself, even falling asleep on my head as well. "Abra has been registered to your Pokedex. Abra the Psi Pokemon, a Psychic Type. Abra can teleport itself in its sleep. Apparently the more deeply an Abra sleeps, the farther its teleportation's go."
After searching for a while longer and finding no new Pokemon, I began training the new Pokemon and some old ones as well. Jigglypuff was probably the easiest to train as my strategy revolved around putting the enemy to sleep and then damaging them before they could retaliate. Jigglypuff seemed to prefer this method compared to all out attack, which was something I could respect. Abra, was difficult to train and much like Magikarp couldn't really fight, so to help them gain strength, I had been letting them observe battles and they had begun growing in strength thanks to this. It seemed to be doing a good job, since Magikarp had eagerly shown me his newest move, Tackle, though the attack didn't do much damage. I was immensely proud that he had already grown enough to learn an attacking move.
Growlithe and Vulpix were extremely similar in their battle styles, they both seemed to prefer an all out assault against their opponents. They both new similar moves as well, Growlithe knew, Agility, Ember, Flame Wheel and Bite some excellent moves there. Meanwhile Vulpix new, Ember, Incinerate, Confuse Ray and Quick Attack. The confusion came in handy against opponents who were in sync with one another compared with wild Pokemon.
Wartortle, Ivysaur and Charmeleon were growing in strength by the day, each one improving trying to up the other one. Yeah I forgot to mention how each one of them wanted to show that they were the most powerful or perhaps my most favourite. I had attempted to dissuade the competition, but they also seemed to help one another. I guess there were benefits and drawbacks to allowing them to compete with one another.
Pidgeotto and Fearow they also had a small rivalry with one another, they liked to have sky races with each other, with hardly ever any clear winner when I referred their races when we had off time. Golbat usually joined in when the days ended since he felt more comfortable then. Speaking of Golbat, as a Zubat he was rather shy and didn't like to associate with the other Pokemon or me, but I respected his decision nonetheless. However, as a Golabt, he was far more outgoing and seemed to be better friends with me, day by day.
Beedrill and Butterfree, they were growing too, Beedrill was definitely more outgoing than Butterfree who preferred smaller battles, maybe battles that were more for fun, or training. Gym battles, were too challenging sometimes for him, but he participated to make Leo proud. Beedrill eagerly anticipated all battles, no matter the kind, to show his trainer just how grateful he was that he had evolved all the way from a Weedle.
Both of my Gloom and Weepinbell had developed a close friendship, when not battling they preferred each others company which I respected, but they did get along with some of the other Pokemon. Pikachu was probably the most outgoing and confident off my Pokemon, minus the starter Pokemon. When outside of his Pokeball he enjoyed spending time riding on my shoulder or head while we travelled.
Rattata, had actually while training, evolved into a Raticate, which Rotom registered into the Pokedex for me. "Raticate has been registered to your Pokedex. Raticate the Mouse Pokemon, a Normal Type. Its whiskers are essential for maintaining its balance. No matter how friendly you are, it will get angry and bite you if you touch its whiskers." Since evolving Raticate had definitely grown more serious, yes he still enjoyed being around me, but he definitely seemed to distance himself from me, since he was a Rattata. But I guess that's what happens when a Pokemon evolves, they sometimes go through personality changes.
Ekans, similarly when battling the wild Pokemon, had evolved into Arbok, "Arbok has been registered to your Pokedex. Arbok the Cobra Pokemon, a Poison Type. After stunning its opponents with the pattern on its stomach, it quickly wraps them up in its body and waits for them to stop moving." After evolving and after listening to its Pokedex from Rotom, I guess Arbok couldn't help himself, as he wrapped his body around me much like he had as an Ekans, but now he was much larger and much more powerful in his physical strength.
I assume he was just giving me a strong hug as thanks for allowing him to evolve, as I could see his face hovering over mine, as he nudged my cheek, before tightening. Only when I started to go limp did he realise he might be hugging me too tight and so he released me, with a final gentle poke.
After some vigorous training with Sandshrew, he had also begun evolving and I feel as though I should mention, evolutions were progressing quickly since I had trained each and ever Pokemon equally and always swapped them around. "Sandslash has been registered to your Pokedex. Sandslash the Mouse Pokemon, a Ground Type. It climbs trees by hooking on with its sharp claws. Sandslash shares the berries it has gathers, dropping them down to Sandshrew waiting below the tree." I had to admit hearing that Pokedex entry was quite lovely, showing the bond between Sandshrew and Sandslash. I guess that embarrassed my Sandslash as he blushed lightly in embarrassment.
Nidorino and Nidorina had always had a close bond with one another and ever since they had evolved, that bond between them maintained strong as ever. They especially loved when they could battle alongside one another, working in harmony not only with each other but their beloved trainer as well. I don't know why I didn't expect it, but Clefairy who also evolved using a Moon Stone, got along very well, with Nidorino and Nidorina. In the beginning Clefairy was and still is shy and reserved but with those he trusts, was showing himself in a different light.
Paras and Venonat had also been getting along quite well, they also were good friends with Butterfree and Beedrill, but since they were smaller, they didn't seem to have the confidence the other Bug Pokemon exuded, but perhaps when they evolved that would change. Meowth was definitely still quite lazy, but not in a bad sense, I mean when in battle Meowth performed with grace and speed that was difficult to outmatch, but outside of battle, Meowth prepared to either rest in his Pokeball or sleep on my head. Mankey was the complete opposite and I assumed it was because he was a Fighting Type. Mankey desired to always battle, no matter if it was a wild Pokemon, or a trainers Pokemon. Mankey lived for the battle and always pushed himself to better himself, whether for him or his trainer I couldn't quite tell.
Psyduck was difficult to interpret if I'm being frank, he followed instructions well in battle, but I didn't like how when he got headaches I couldn't cure them. I hated seeing him in pain, but when he used his psychic powers, the pain did fade away so battling seemed like an effective cure to his continuous chronic headaches.
Geodude and Onix were quite bunches, they preferred to be alone, but they did enjoy company, its not like they rejected my company, they just preferred to be alone. Reaching the end of Route 5, I heard that the gate was closed for the time being meaning I couldn't head straight down. No worries though, that meant I could go down the underground path which would connect me to Vermilion City.
When I entered the underground path I noticed that the lighting was poor, though I could see down the path, it wasn't exactly easy. "Come on out Golbat!" Since Golbat lived in caves and preferred the dark I wondered if he could help me along in the dark. Golbat happily agreed to help me and he flew on a head, occasionally he turned around to see whether I was still following and hadn't fallen behind.
After a short walk, we eventually reached the end of the underground path and had reached Route 6, a quick check on the Rotom phone confirmed I had caught the Pokemon and thus I had no reason to search through the grass. There were however, a multitude of trainers to battle. A gentleman battled me with an Eevee which Mankey defeated with relative ease thanks to a super effective Karate Chop. A camper battled me with a Sandshrew and a male Nidoran. Both Pokemon fought with bravery, but were no match for Ivysaur and Geodude.
A second camper battled me with a female Nidoran and a Jigglypuff, the Nidoran was bested by Butterfree's Psybeam and Jigglypuff proved to be a challenge by almost putting my Onix to sleep, but Onix pulled through and ended the battle for me. While travelling, I noticed that right by a small lake there was a sailor who challenged me with his Tentacool, it was a Pokemon I hadn't seen yet, but it fell to Pikachu's Thunder Shock nonetheless.
Another camper soon challenged me they had a Charmander, I thought about using Charmeleon, but decided to go and use Sandslash instead. Sandslash defeated Charmander with a super effective Bulldoze. Not too bother Charmeleon but he did get to battle against the next trainers Bellsprout and won the battle with Ember.
At that I reached Vermilion City but before I challenged the gym I had some things I wanted to do before then, first visit the new laboratory that was run by Professor Cerise, then visit the S.S. Anne and perhaps explore the city as well. Before anything else I healed my Pokemon at the centre and then headed towards the new laboratory.
It was definitely different than Professor Oaks lab, it seemed more advanced, but I couldn't see much of a garden, perhaps there was one round the back. Entering the lab, I saw who I presumed was Professor Cerise, "hello there, I am Professor Cerise and you must be Leo right?" I was surprised, "you know who I am?" I asked and he nodded, "Professor Oak always informs me of new trainers who show promise, he's been impressed with your catching and battling prowess that's for sure." I was still in a state of confusion but it made sense that professors communicated about new trainers.
"Professor Cerise, your lab looks way different compared to Professor Oak's" I said hoping that didn't offend him but he chuckled, "yes I imagine it does. This laboratory still has so much potential and room to grow." After discussing everything we could, two kids who looked around my age popped into the laboratory. "Professor Cerise we're back!" However, they then spotted me and were confused. "Oh my name is Leo, a new trainer from Viridian City I was just visiting." The two boys smiled and nodded their heads and introduced themselves.
"My name is Ash and this is my partner Pikachu" he gestured to the Pikachu on his shoulder. At that the second boy introduced himself, "I'm Goh nice to meet you!" I smiled, "nice to meet you both!" Before I suddenly remembered why the name Ash sounded so familiar to me.
"You wouldn't happen to be Ash from Pallet Town right?" I asked the Pikachu trainer and he smiled and nodded, "yes, how did you know?" I recounted how I knew, "when I got my first Pokemon there, I met a man named Tracey..." At that Ash's eyes lit up in remembrance. "Oh Tracey, the Professor's assistant, yes I remember him." I smiled, "when I was waiting for the professor, Tracey showed me one of your Pokemon, a Bulbasaur and mentioned you were an impressive trainer and were travelling around all the regions on a journey. He figured I may one day meet you, but I didn't know you would be here of all places."
Goh then told me what he and Ash were doing, "me and Ash here are working as Professor Cerise's research fellows." That made sense as to why they were in the lab of all places. Ash then mentioned he was competing in the World Coronation Series and had already made it into the Ultra Class. "I'm sorry, I haven't heard of the World Coronation Series, what's that about and the Ultra Class too?"
Ash eagerly explained everything with such a vibrant grin on his face. "The World Coronation series, is where the best of the best trainers compete against one another to increase their rank. It's all too battle the most powerful trainer, Leon, the monarch of the World Coronation Series and the champion of the Galar region too. I competeted through the Normal Class and the Great Class and I'm now in the Ultra Class ranked at 36!"
Goh then mentioned about how they had just been in the Galar region for a recent battle. "Ash just battled Bea a gym leader of the Galar region and a really strong rival of Ash's but Ash managed to win and increase his rank!" I was really impressed. "What about you Goh?" Goh seemed confused at the question. "Sorry, I meant I know Ash is competing in the World Coronation Series, but what about you?"
At that Goh mentioned his goal was to catch one of every kind of Pokemon and his dream was too one day catch Mew. He also mentioned as part of his dream, he was attempting to become a member of Project Mew a team which had been created to meticulously search for said Mew. It sure seemed like an impressive and difficult goal. "Wow, that sounds intense, but I wish you luck in your dream, you too Ash!" The two boys then asked me what my dream was.
"Too be honest at first I didn't know, but ever since I caught my first Pokemon, I just wanted to complete my Pokedex and catch every Pokemon I could, much like you Goh! But I'm also challenging gym leaders to keep my Pokemon strong as I catch more and more!" Goh smiled, "then I guess that makes us rivals, on who can catch every Pokemon first!" I accepted the rivalry before I decided to head on over to the S.S. Anne and see how interesting the sights would be.
"See you now, maybe we'll meet again, in another region maybe!" I smiled and waved at the two boys before heading over to the port, where I saw the S.S. Anne and it was a sight to behold, absolutely massive, standing out from any other ordinary ship that was for sure. Before I could board, a sailor at the dock, asked me for the S.S. Ticket, which I provided and then was let on.
Inside the ship, it was marvellous, the décor was just incredible I couldn't even find the words to descirbe what I was seeing. Exploring the ship, there were many rooms and for as many rooms, there were just as many people. The passengers apparently get restless and battled trainers to revitalize themselves according to a sailor who greeted me when i entered the boat.
A women battled me with a Pidgey, but against my Pikachu who used Thunder Shock defeated Pidgey rather effortlessly. I was rather surprised when her second choice was a Pikachu, which was a slight issue. returning Pikachu, I sent out instead my Geodude, who was immune to electric attacks, however, I wasn't anticipating her Pikachu to know Double Kick. Geodude however, took the attack rather well and finished the battle with a Magnitude.
A second battle was with a child, who sent out a Mankey, to which I sent out my Pidgeotto who used Wing Attack before Mankey or his trainer could even react. Further down the hall, I was challenged by a gentlemen who battled me with a Growlithe, it was a perfect chance to send out Wartortle, who won the battle using Water Pulse. Heading downstairs, I was confronted with yet another battle against a sailor who used a Slowpoke, to which Ivysaur used Vine Whip and finished the battle. Slowpoke, much as their name confirmed it, were a rather slow moving Pokemon.
A mechanic challenged me next and used a Magnemite a Electric and Steel type, which Charmeleon handled well, using Fire Fang. A second sailor challenged me using a Psyduck, Gloom used Giga Drain and drained Psyduck of its energy and then the sailor sent out a Poliwag and I decided to substitute for Weepinbell who used Vine Whip defeating the Poliwag.
I had noticed down here I was challenged more so by sailors and the next battle was no different, this sailor however, used a Horsea, a rare Water Pokemon, I'd never seen before. Against Horsea I chose to use Pikachu and Spark finished off the Horsea in a single move. The same happened when his next Pokemon was a Goldeen. After that I returned up the stairs and continued up the next set of stairs.
Exploring further I was challenged by a fisherman who used a Magikarp, I decided, that since my Magikarp knew Tackle and looked stronger than his it would be a good chance for a battle. When Magikarp faced off against another Magikarp he seemed confident that he could win. With several Tackles from both Magikarp eventually mine came out victorious but it was by no means an easy victory. A few rooms down I was challenged my a gentleman who used a Ponyta a Fire Type and so I used my Sandslash who ended the battle with a few Crush Claws, he did dodge Embers as well. A second gentleman battled me using a Sandslash who I put to sleep with Jigglypuff allowing him to get an easy win for himself.
Following the path further, I exited and arrived on the deck, which was packed with people, by far the busiest area on the entire ship that was for sure. A sailor challenged me with a Seel, I sent out Arbok, who used Glare to paralyse Seel, before finishing the battle with a few Crunch's. On a deck it was far too dangerous to use Acid, if it missed then the ship was sinking that's a guarantee. His second Pokemon was a Machop, but Fearow handled that with a Peck.
Continuing along the deck, another sailor challenged me with a Poliwag, to which I used my Beedrill, whose Twin Needle attack finished the Poliwag off while dodging several Bubble Beams. After exploring the deck, I had decided to try and help Abra, much like with Magikarp, the two had been slowly but surely levelling up and it got too the point where Abra had seen enough battles and had begun to evolve.
Seeing Abra a Pokemon who struggled so much starting to evolve filled me with so much joy. "Kadabra has been registered to your Pokedex. Kadabra the Psi Pokemon, a Psychic Type. This Pokemon's telekinesis is immensely powerful. To prepare for evolution, Kadabra stores up psychic energy in the star on its forehead." Kadabra seemed happy with its evolution but maintained a calm exterior. I guess that may have been because of it being a Psychic Type and as a Psychic Type, he could sense more making evolution all the more interesting for him.
At that, I decided I'd explored the entirety of the S.S. Anne and decided to return to Vermilion City and rest up before I decided to challenge the gym leader tomorrow. Looking at my Pokedex, I was pleased to see that I had registered 47 different Pokemon already and I hoped that number would continue to steadily increase.
