The Drowning of King

King, from Housepets!, finds himself trapped with time running out...

Dark, thick clouds rumbled low over Babylon Gardens as King pulled his scarf tighter around his cream-and-white colored neck. In one hand, his paw was tightly clutched around the navy blue shell of his brand new cell phone. It had cost him some favors with some of the other pets to pull the money together but he couldn't stop thinking about Bailey.

The blue-eyed Husky had totally captured his every waking thought since his time on the farm and once he hooked his cell phone up to the phone plan at the house, he'd be able to call her to his heart's content.

On one hand, he felt himself rapidly falling in love with the Husky but somewhere deep in his heart he still felt strange about loving a pet like that. He was still human, wasn't he? He shook his head.

Life had been strange since that overgrown chicken upended his life. But he wasn't in prison, he was relatively free, and maybe Bailey was what he needed in life. A fresh start with somebody like her.

Ploop!

A big, fat raindrop splashed across his muzzle, cutting into his thoughts, and he yelped in surprise. He picked up his pace, his short corgi legs stamping loudly against the sidewalk as the rain began falling in steady sheets on him. The concrete sidewalk darkened quickly with the rain to King's dismay. He cursed at how little of a warning he was given before the heavens opened up on him.

A colorful curse fell out of his mouth as he regretted not bringing an umbrella on his errand and another curse came out of his mouth as he stepped through a deep puddle and soaked his legs in a noisy splash.

"Oh come on!" He complained, shaking his legs free of the extra moisture to no avail: the rain was coming down harder and harder. King glanced for some protection and spotted a tree across the street. Gritting his teeth, King darted across the street as fast as his stubby legs could carry him. He raised his free paw to shield his eyes from the rain fall but the sharp bite of the rain still made him flinch.

"Just need to make it to the tree." He said through gritted fangs. His feet slapped awkwardly in the forming puddles and he wished he had his longer, human legs for but a moment.

Half-blind, he didn't even notice the storm drain on the gutter. The sudden slope in the road and raised curb tripped him head over heels. Like a spinning wheel in the sky, he tumbled forward onto the curb and slammed into it, yelping in pain as his phone shot out of his grip like a bullet.

"No!" He shouted, his blurry eyes trying to focus on where it bobbed in a river in the street. In just a blink of an eye, it slipped into the storm drain and down under the street.

With a strength he didn't know he had, King sprang to his feet and dove towards the storm drain but the phone was lost to the river of rainfall below. A long, unceasing string of curses exited his maw and he slammed his paws against the curb.

Thunk!

He darted his eyes to the source of the metallic clanking and his eyes grew wide. He had dislodged the lid to the storm drain! He didn't have time to lay there and be angry; he had to get that cell phone back before Bailey would wonder if he was ever going to call her. He gripped the edge of the iron lid and pulled it back for him to slip down onto the slimy maintenance ladder. As his feet pressed against the wet ladder, a chill ran up his spine.

"Gross," King muttered, "so gross." He tried to push it out of his mind. The phone was important, not his comfort right now.

Jumping down from the last few rungs, King found himself standing on a small walkway that ran parallel with the river of rainwater that was draining downslope. Low, cramped, and dark, he could barely tell where the phone was at all. As he breathed deeply, he felt more afraid than he did in a long time. The darkness was oppressive.

King gulped hard but a blink of light in the water took his attention from his fears. The cell phone! The waterproof case he purchased let it bob to the surface of the river. It circled just inches within King's reach before flowing downstream with everything else unlucky enough to be caught in the current.

"Stop!" King shouted, hoping that the inanimate object could respond to his desperate pleas. The walkway clanked and groaned as he ran, crouching as low as he could through the narrow and tight passage.

Eyes locked on the phone, King didn't even see the pipe that had busted free from its supports and lay low across the path. With no warning, it slammed across King's snout and blinded him in pain.

Clang!

King grabbed his face with a yelp and stepped off the walkway, tumbling into the raging current below. He swallowed a gulp of water as he thrashed back and forth in the current. Kicking and flailing, he bobbed to the surface and coughed violently and scrambled to grab hold of anything within reach.

An iron bar came into his grip and he seized it with all the strength he had left. His small paws wrapping around it as the water beat itself against him. "Help!" he cried as his head was driven underwater again, "Heerblrlbp mblelrb!!"

The water swirled into his nostrils and ears, filling them up and deadening his senses. "Herblrblp!" he screamed. The iron bar he trusted to keep him there betrayed him as it broke up, casting him down a drainage pipe into a small overflow tank.

Cra-Thunk!

The gate that the door was holding open slammed behind King as he splashed down into a pool of water. He spat and cough as he staggered to his feet to find his situation had gone from bad to worse.

The water was already ankle deep and was rising rapidly from leaks in pipes all over the room. The only escape was the way he came and the solid iron gate was sealed in place. He swore aloud, eyes darting from one side of the cylinder shaped tank to another. "Oh no," he said, feeling the water permeate through his fur and chill his skin.

His paws and toes were already soaked, the water surging between and around them with every step he took. He admitted, he liked the feeling in a weird way but the cold he could've done without.

The groaning of the pipes as the rainfall above surfaced intensified began to drone loudly and fill the tank with a pitch that King grimaced against. Cupping his hands around his maw, he began to shout for help.

"Peanut! Bino! Fido!" He shouted, rising to his tippy toes in an attempt to overcome the sound of the rain and the pipes. He paused and then shouted it again. "Anybody?!" he screamed, panic seeping into his voice as the water rose past his knees and up to his waist.

He felt the water rush under his ballsack and against his sheath, sliding in-between his cocksleeve and his cock. He grunted at the cold and felt a small moan leave his lips at the sensation. He felt his sack react involuntarily and his small yet thick cock start hardening at the chilling feeling. "Aw, fuck." He muttered. It was bad enough to be trapped in here but now he was horny and thinking of Bailey.

Bailey, that beautiful Husky, was probably enjoying some beautiful sunset out there on the farm. He wondered if she thought of him at all since he left. He hoped she did...he hoped a lot of things about her. She'd make a great mother one day, he thought. "And I wouldn't be a good father." He muttered.

It had been some time since he got caught up with PETA and not that long ago that Pete transformed him into-

King stopped and his eyes grew wide. Looking back up to the ceiling of the cylinder, he cupped his hands around his maw again and began to scream.

"Pete!! Pete, I need your help!" If anybody could get him out of this jam, it had to be the near-godlike being that put him into this mess in the first place. If he never was turned into a dog, he wouldn't have ended up trapped here now.

As the water surged around King's erect cock, he waited patiently for a response but none came. The water began rising faster and faster around King and he scrambled to the side of the cylinder to see if he could climb along the pipes to stay above the water.

As King dug his grip into an old pipe that ran along the wall and tried pulling himself up, he noticed a camera on the wall that he didn't see earlier. In-cased in a hard plastic shell for waterproofing, a red light in the corner blinked slowly to indicate that it was on and recording. King hooted in delight and began waving his free hand at the camera.

"Hey!! Hey I need help! Send somebody down here!" He shouted, as the water began rising up to his chest, "I'm trapped here!"

The camera sat there, blinking slowly, with no indication that it even heard nor saw King on the pipe. "Help!" King shouted again, shaking the pipe for emphasis.

The pipe, however, took displeasure to being shook. With a groan and a rumble, it broke free of the wall and dunked King underwater as it burst open and opened a new source of water to fill the cylinder.

King swirled and spun under the chilly water as it flooded over every orifice left untouched on his body. The water stung his nose and he grabbed it to pinch it shut as he scrambled to find which way was up and which way was down.

"Mmnblrgll!" he grunted as the pipe hit him across the head and dazed him. Stars flooded his vision under the water. With a push of effort, he bobbed to the surface and pushed his head above the surface.

"Gah!" He breathed, spitting out water and blinking away the stinging sensation that covered both of his eyes. He dropped a few colorful swears and realized that the tank was more than half way full. The camera still sat above the water line but still hadn't moved. The red blinking kept on its steady pace with no sign of having even noticed the mayhem that was being unleashed in the tank.

King snarled in frustration and moved to swim over to the camera. Awkwardly paddling forward, he struggled in his dog body to swim like a human. With a sigh of resignation, he doggy-paddled over quicker than trying to swim like he learned years ago.

Floating up against the wall, King grabbed the camera and pushed his snout against the lens. "Help!! I need help!!" He shouted, shaking it as hard as he could. A pop behind him took his attention; another pipe just burst and the water began rising faster.

Swearing colorfully in a shaky voice, King cried out for anybody that could possibly save him. Pete, Bailey, Peanut, PETA, it didn't matter. King could feel himself running out of space and his breathing became more erratic and panicked. "Please no," he begged to the camera, "don't leave me in here."

The water surged up and over King's head, pushing him back down underwater. Bobbing up quickly for a breath of air, King descended back down to get in front of the camera.

Ever blinking, the camera showed no sign of acknowledging King in front of it. Was this a cruel stunt from Pete, to teach him respect? Some kind of punishment for not being the most submissive piece in that cosmic game he got dragged into? King pushed the thoughts out of his head for now. He had to get help.

Waving his arms through the water, King did everything he could to get the attention of the object in front him. Kicking, swinging, grand gestures, any movement possible, he was dedicated to continue doing.

With a lurch, King felt something strange in his stomach. "Blblerg?" he muttered in the water, holding his stomach. Did he swallow too much of the water? Who knows what else was in it; old sewage, trash, waste...all sorts of gross things that made King's face turn a little green at the thought.

His stomach gurgled and rumbled, twisting a little down in his gut. Before King could react, he felt the sensation crawl out to his tailhole: _Pfftblorfblblurblfblfpt!_Came the warm, long fart from his ass. A stream of small bubbles roiled around King's stubby tail and up his back before floating up to the surface of the water.

King felt his face flush with embarrassment. The camera was still right there, recording him, and it just saw him fart, nice and long. King turned from the camera and hid his face in his hands. "Blrp!" he swore in the water.

He didn't want to be seen like this in his last moments. He looked back at the camera for the last time and swam away from it, hopefully out of sight. He felt a wave of emotions crash over him. It was gross and embarrassing to be caught farting like that! What would the other pets think? What would Bailey think? Would she even still want to talk to him after seeing that footage?

King surfaced and took a deep breath of air. "I can't believe I did that..." he whispered to himself, face raging with the red color of a deep embarrassment. He raised a hand to the roof of the cylinder to keep him steady-

"The roof?!" King yelped, slamming both hands against it. The water had risen much faster than he expected! In just minutes, he lost almost all of his available air to breathe and he started feeling claustrophobic; his eyes grew wide and wild, darting around for any last moment of escape.

"There!" King shouted, swimming forward. An iron grate at the very center of the ceiling! King could have punched himself. Of course a room like this would have a drain at the top! It would have popped otherwise! He pushed up to it and grabbed a hold of the bars and pulled.

King swore. They were bolted in place but were extremely rusty. "With some force..." King muttered, pushing and pulling as best as he could in the water. He beat against it as the water level rose up to his ears, pouring over his large corgi ears and forced him up closer to the grate. "No, no, no, no!"

Taking a deep breath, the water rose up and over King, submerging him for the last and final time in the cylinder. He pinched his nose shut, small bubbles crawling out of his nostrils that made his nose burn. This was his last chance!

"Gurglrlgorlgl! Glorblrlg!!" was his cry of determination under the water as he repositioned himself.

He grabbed a hold of the grate again and shook with all his might. His small corgi arms weren't suited to this kind of work; he wished Pete made him more like Fido or any of the other police dogs with their larger frames and muscles. They could have broken out in minutes.

Even Bailey could have done it. King set his jaw and pushed with all his might. "Nnng-MMNNG!!" he grunted, bubbles streaming from his mouth and sliding between the bars on the grate.

And still, with all that effort and strength, nothing budged. The rust was a false hope and there was no place left to go. King felt his muscles grow sore and tired from the effort he had spent keeping himself aloft for so long. "Blbhbp." he muttered, bubbles swirling around his maw and nose.

All this for a cell phone? Maybe this was a punishment from Pete, the way he used to capture pets and keep them locked up. A fitting punishment indeed, to be locked up here and given hope after hope only to be brought to despair every time.

Bailey...the one good thing that happened to him since becoming a pet was so far away and she would never know how he really felt about her now. He held onto the bars as his vision began to darken at the edges. He could feel his lungs start burning for more oxygen and he wished Pete gave him a bigger frame again...he could have survived longer.

"Blurblrbl-blbrlblbl" came the air from his lips as he succumbed to his fate. His limbs went heavy and he began to sink into the cylinder. As his vision faded, his wished he had more time. More time with the other pets in Babylon. More time with Bailey. More time to make amends for his past and to do the right thing in the end.

Instead, he had let a physical possession, a phone, take him here. Something that wouldn't even matter in a year had ruined him. He smiled a little. But he did it for love. Maybe that makes it okay in the end. Maybe that makes everything okay and balances it all out before anybody that knew him.

He hoped that when they found him, he would look like he was sleeping. He hoped they'd tell Bailey and they'd comfort her in her grief. And that they'd remember him. The man that became a dog.

A man that was given a second chance at life. Maybe, even, they'd remember him as a dog only.

That would be nice, King thought as his existence faded to black. That would be very nice indeed.
