What Happens at Sea

A young otter goes pearl diving with an experienced fisherman and discovers that the sea holds many dangers and treasures.

"Hurry up Kodi, or we'll miss the morning tide!"

The otter cast a quick glance behind him, towards the small fishing-boat and the bare-chested man who sat in it. Saki had finished loading their gear and provisions and was gently but firmly tapping the bench in the middle of the skiff to signal the youth that it was time to get down to business.

"Please be careful, and do exactly as Saki tells you!" Kodi's mother said.

"I'll only be gone for one moon," the son protested, his skin flushing red under the fur when she embraced him tightly.

"Stop embarrassing the boy. He's in good hands," his father came to the rescue.

He ruffled Kodi's head and his features softened. "I went pearl diving a few times when I was young. Great memories, but I was no good at it. Perhaps you'll revive the tradition."

Kodi was about to hug his father when he saw his friends watching him from the top of one of the flat-roofed houses that faced the ocean. He stopped at the last second and simply acknowledged the words with a nod before turning towards the jetty and the ship. The older otter understood and smiled as his son made his way to the boat with a determined step.

Kodi felt a pinch inside his chest when the small boat rounded a bend in the rugged coastline and his home disappeared from view. His companion silently watched him keep his gaze in the direction where the village lay.

"It's always hard on the heart the first time you leave mom and dad," he commented.

The younger otter turned his head abruptly, fumbling around for something to do.

"I'm not sad," he protested as he grasped the rope that held their small sail up, "I was just looking out for... for..."

"You should let the emotions flow while they're still there," Saki continued, "When I set out on my first trip my sweetheart was in tears. Now I barely get a grunt out of her when I kiss her goodbye."

He looked at the youth and his grin grew wider. "You do have a sweetheart, don't you?"

Kodi blushed hard and fiddled with the rope.

"Yes... well... not yet. But I'll get one when I come back with the money I'll earn from the pearls."

"That's the spirit!" Saki rose and slapped his shoulder, "In the meantime, I'll make you earn that money."

The day was spent in hustle and excitement, Kodi forgetting his sadness as he endeavored to learn to maneuver the small ship as best he could, and he was dead tired by the time the sun sank on the horizon and Saki steered their boat towards a bay where they would shelter for the night. Now that he was no longer working the younger otter began to shiver as the air around him cooled. Like Saki he wore nothing but a piece of homespun cloth fastened around his loins by a piece of thin rope.

The skiff was just wide enough for them to lay side by side under a shared blanket. "Tomorrow we'll take our first dive. There's a bank of oysters nearby, not the best ones but good for teaching you," Saki said with a yawn. Kodi nodded and laid his head on a pile of rope and cloth and soon the light snoring of his companion and the gentle rustle of the waves that bobbed the hull were the only sounds in the world. The night air was a bit chilly, and he instinctively huddled with the other man for warmth. Saki's fur was rough to the touch, as if weathered by sun and brine, but to the inexperienced youth this felt reassuring. He huddled closer, shoulder to shoulder with Saki, but then he felt awkward and rolled away until the desire for body heat made him creep closer again. The back and forth went on for some time, sleep eluding the increasingly agitated otter, until he accidentally elbowed Saki and the snoring stopped. Kodi froze, his whole body tensing. Visions of an angry Saki flashed through his brain and he bit his lip, wondering if he should preempt the outburst with an apology but not daring to open his mouth. For some time there was silence, then a quiet and regular breathing and finally snoring again. It was perhaps a minute before Kodi allowed air to escape his lungs, and even longer before he relaxed, but eventually his eyelids closed and sleep overtook him.

The splash of cold water woke him up. Kodi yelped, stumbled up to his feet and, forgetting he wasn't in his bed, almost fell off the boat.

"Time to get some work done, this ain't a pleasure-cruise," Saki laughed, the rising sun at his back.

The water was clear and luminous enough to see the oyster-bank on the sandy bottom, and Kodi guessed that the bed couldn't be more than three or four fathoms from the surface. Nothing he hadn't done before, except that when he dove with his friends he never lingered for long at the bottom of the sea.

"I'll go first," Saki said, "Just watch and see how I do."

The otter stood up, unfastened his belt and slipped out of his loincloth. He flicked it away with the tip of his foot, and his well-hung manhood and plump balls flopped slightly as he bent forward to pick up the mesh bag which would hold his harvest as well as the heavy stone that would take him to the bottom without the effort of swimming down.

Kodi averted his eyes, as if he had accidentally walked in on someone bathing in the privacy of their home. Then the awkwardness of his gesture hit him and he turned his head back in Saki's direction, trying to not let his gaze fall on his manly bits any more than he could help it. Saki did not seem to register the other man's reaction. The otter held the stone tightly against his cream-furred stomach, took a deep breath and plunged feet first into the crystalline waters.

The young man shook off the droplets that had splashed on him and leant over the side of the boat to observe his teacher. Saki was already at work, gliding above the reef and sending colorful fish scattering in all directions. His lithe body looked slightly distorted under the water's shifting tricks, but the effortless grace of his movements was breathtaking. He undulated rather than swam, moving smoothly from place to place, only stopping briefly to cut away a promising oyster with his knife and drop it into his net. Perhaps it was a shadow that Kodi's body cast over the ocean floor, but just as the younger otter leaned closer to get a better view the swimmer rolled over and waved at him, flashing the lighter fur of his throat and belly. Kodi waved back at the silhouette below him, wondering if he'd look as elegant and at ease underwater when his turn came.

Saki gasped a big breath as he resurfaced, and he grasped his companion's extended arm before climbing back into the boat, his dripping fur plastered to his skin. The two men pulled the loaded net from the depths and emptied its contents on the deck.

"Now see," Saki said, picking up a shell and holding it for Kodi to inspect, "They need to be at least as big as this..."

Kodi watched intently as the man dispensed his advice and ended the lesson by opening a couple of the shells. They came up devoid of pearls but tasted delicious.

"Your turn now."

Kodi felt his heart pound a bit faster. He picked up the net and stone and stepped to the side of the boat. He turned his back to the other man and, after some hesitation, began to fumble with his belt. His loincloth fell, and so did the stone and bag.

"Shit," he swore as water splashed all over him, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry..."

He bent over to try and salvage the net that was slowly sinking like a lazy jellyfish. His arms were elbow-deep into the water when a sudden realization flashed through his brain. His tail moved to tuck itself between his outstretched legs and cover his bare behind.

"Welp, looks like you'll need to dive. Just take it easy and swim back up as soon as you need to breathe."

Heat crept up Kodi's ears and he cursed himself for his clumsiness. So much for looking graceful. He chased the thought from his head, took a deep breath and plunged into the ocean.

Water enveloped him, muffling all sounds and cooling his flushed skin. It felt good, just like the caress of a breeze on a hot day. Like most otters he had learned to swim before he could walk, and down there his lack of clothing only felt natural. A few supple breaststrokes took him to the reef where the bag was waiting for him. He picked it up and went to work, though his untrained eye struggled to single out any shells worthy of collecting out of the rock-like mass. In the end he resurfaced with a bag that contained only a handful of middling oysters, but Saki seemed pleased anyway.

"That's not too bad for a first time," he said as he helped the man up the boat, "Now, time to see if we struck gold."

They sat cross-legged on either side of the pile of molluscs and began opening them, eating the flesh and tossing the empty shells back into the water as they went. It was messy, dirty work, but Kodi shot sideway glances at his discarded loincloth, wondering if he should put it back on now that the sun had dried his fur. He felt weirdly exposed, sitting in front of another man with his sex in plain sight. But Saki looked like he was utterly focused on his work, and Kodi decided that retrieving his own clothing would only make the situation awkward.

"I got one, I got one!"

From the gooey flesh his fingers extracted a small off-white sphere. Excitement washed away all other feelings as he stood up to admire his catch. In the light of the sun it glinted with an iridescent luster that made the young otter's heart swell with joy and pride.

"Fantastic! It's a nice feeling isn't it?"

"You think it's worth a lot?" Kodi asked and held the pearl for the more experienced man to gauge.

Saki rose and craned his neck to get a better look. "Well, it should maybe fetch a silver coin. The shape is flawed although the color is nice..." He saw the young man's face fall in disappointment and quickly corrected himself. "But you wouldn't want to sell it anyway, would you? It's your first pearl, keep it for good luck."

They fished for most of the day, moving the boat between different spots, diving one after the other and opening the oysters together. Slowly Kodi got the hang of it, and although his catch was never as plentiful as Saki's he began to select the shells with a more confident hand. By the late afternoon they had collected enough of the tiny beads for Saki to call it a day, and he steered their boat towards the shore. They leapt into waist-deep water and then dragged the boat ashore on a small sheltered beach before setting up their camp for the night. It was almost with reluctance that Kodi strapped his loincloth around his waist after Saki did the same. By now he had grown used to the freedom that the lack of clothing afforded him.

"A decent day's work," Saki nodded after reviewing the pearls that were spread out on a small cloth in front of him. They came in all shapes and colors, from white to blue and pink. There were two perfectly round ones, and Saki explained to his companion that these fetched the best prices.

"Tomorrow, we will go to a different bank. It's a bit deeper but that's where the good ones are."

He buried their small treasure in the sand, not far from the fire. They ate and chatted as night fell, Kodi confiding to his companion that he planned to keep the best pearl he found and give it to a girl when he came back to the village. He had made the same boast to all his friends in the weeks prior to the trip, though in truth he hadn't yet thought of which girl he was going to give it to. Saki heartily agreed anyway and said that nothing opened a girl's heart like a pretty jewel.

They huddled under the same blanket for a second night, Saki falling sound asleep before the younger man again. His limbs ached from the day's exertions but his brain was unsettled. Fragmented thoughts ran through his head, exciting him and making him restless. The moment when he dove and filled the bag for the first time, the discovery of his first pearl, the prospect of earning a share of the money their harvest would fetch. Other scenes played out in his mind, like when he and Saki had taken off their clothes in front of each other, or when the other man had waved at him from under the waves. It was only when the tip of his member brushed against Saki's leg that he realized he had grown hard. He drew back like he had touched a red-hot stove and found himself half-out of the makeshift bed.

Kodi bit his lip. In the comfort and privacy of his own room getting rid of a nightly hard-on would involve nothing more than a few vigorous strokes, but he did not dare touch himself in the other man's presence. He hesitated and waited, too embarrassed to go back under the blanket, but the tingling erection refused to go away. Worse, his unemptied balls began to ache. Finally he rose as silently as he could and tip-toed towards a tumble of rocks that would hide him from view, thanking his good luck for the sand that muffled his steps. There he breathed a sigh of relief, untied his belt and gripped his stiff member, intending to take care of the matter as quickly as possible. He closed his eyes and tried to picture a nice girl as he stroked, but again his mind was unable to settle on one in particular, and to his surprise his arousal began to dwindle. He began to think about returning to bed when his manhood grew hard again between his fingers. Now that he thought about it there was something heart-pounding about sleeping next to Saki, about seeing him dive and knowing that the other saw him dive too, about dragging the boat together as the waves lapped against their bare thighs.

He barely repressed a squeal as an uncontrollable pulse rumbled from his loins and through his member. Seed shot from his cocktip and dribbled through his closed fingers and onto the sand at his feet. When his orgasm subsided he looked at his spent cock and cummy fingers in confusion then wiped them on the rock's smooth surface before hurriedly slipping back into bed.

Saki was up at dawn again, but this time it was the smell of grilled fish that woke Kodi up. They ate with an appetite made hearty by fresh air and physical work until Saki got up to his feet to relieve a pressing need. A half-eaten chunk of fish froze midway to Kodi's mouth when he saw his companion head towards the rocks where he had been the other night. Saki walked behind the boulder and stopped, the tip of his tail still visible. He stood still for a few heartbeats and then turned around to walk towards another rock. Kodi kept his eyes firmly locked on his food for the rest of the breakfast, only glancing up when it was time to push the boat out to sea.

Their next hunting ground proved more difficult to navigate. It was deeper and rockier, leaving less time for collecting the shells before the diver had to swim his way back up. On the other hand it yielded bigger oysters and larger pearls. They slept together in the boat most nights, going to shore once in a while to replenish their stores of drinking water and cook fresh food. Kodi found himself gaining confidence by the day. Saki was a patient and cheerful teacher, and between the two grew a sense of camaraderie made of jokes, exchanged grins and shared toil. He no longer shied away or felt embarrassed by their close physical contact. Both men were built the same way down there, so what was there to hide?

But to his frustration his bag was never as full as Saki's and the shells he brought back weren't as fruitful. He couldn't shake off the feeling that he wasn't pulling his full weight and repaying his mentor's time and lessons. It was towards the middle of the afternoon, shortly before Saki would normally announce the end of the day's work, that he asked to plunge one more time to check on a crevice where he thought he had glimpsed several promising specimens.

"All right, but don't push yourself too hard," the older otter nodded and laid his hand on the other man's shoulder. Kodi smiled and patted Saki's hand reassuringly before plunging under the waves.

The clear water quickly grew dark, the surface of the coral wall dropping steeply like a cliff. The crevice was near the sandy bottom, its entrance marked by lumpy shells that glinted in the dim light. Kodi's eyes lit up, today he'd find a big, beautiful pearl and give it to Saki. With a flick of his tail he closed the distance, grabbed one of the oysters and then dropped it in surprise. It was empty, the flesh - and whatever treasure it may once have held - long gone. He picked another, then another, only to find that the place was a shellfish graveyard.

He angrily tossed a shell into the depths of the crevice. There went his hope of surprising Saki with a late bounty. Then something big seemed to stir in the rocky crack in response to his gesture. Kodi felt tiny needles of fear spike through his skin. He kicked out his legs to swim back up but a long, rope-like thing lashed out from the crevice and wrapped itself around his naked thigh. Another followed and clenched his right wrist, making him drop his knife in surprise. The young man screamed and a thousand bubbles silently escaped his mouth just as the assailant emerged from its den. It was a vision of nightmare, a shapeless mass surrounded by tentacles that coiled like angry snakes. More tentacles wrapped themselves around his body and dragged him closer to the pale-skinned horror. There, on what must have been the creature's head, a pair of tiny eyes scrutinized him with a gaze that was both mindless and calculating.

The thing must have decided that the intruder was edible, because it began to drag Kodi towards its beaked maw. The man let out another silent scream, though this time only a handful of bubbles rose up in the cold water. The otter's lungs burned but the monster held him with a rubbery strength that far outmatched his own muscles. In desperation he buried his teeth into the tentacle that clung to his right arm. The creature flashed from deathly white to an angry crimson, and instead of letting go it extended another arm that wrapped itself around the otter's neck and squeezed hard. At this instant a lithe shape darted from above and struck fiercely at the monster's eyes.

It was as if someone had kicked a viper's nest. Worm-like arms writhed and lashed out in all directions. The other form responded with a wide slashing motion and a tentacle tip came off in a trail of blood. An explosion of black ink engulfed everything and masked the battle.

Kodi felt the tentacles release their grip but his arms and legs were numb and in the baffling dark cloud he no longer knew which way was up or down. The youth's chest contracted in pain, though that pain felt increasingly distant. Memories of his mother, father and friends crowded confusedly into his brain as he felt himself sinking. Then, right before his body could settle on the bottom, a pair of arms circled his slim waist and pulled him up. A hand cupped the back of his head and warm lips pressed themselves against his to breathe precious air into his lungs.

He emerged from the black cloud and vaguely sensed that he was closer to the surface. Someone was holding him but who? The body belonged to another otter, and from what was pressed against his thigh it was very much male, but the blurry features of his rescuer escaped his efforts to put a name on him.

Another life-giving kiss followed. This time Kodi returned it and his tongue met the other man's. His body relaxed and everything went dark around him.

It was the bright light that made him lift his eyelids. The late afternoon sun sent its warm rays directly into his face, then something blocked the light.

"Come on, don't give up, please..."

Someone above him was breathing hard and pressing rhythmically against his chest. The pounding stopped only for a mouth to blow air into his nostrils. Kodi coughed, gasped and retched salty water on his chest. The world bobbed drunkenly around him but he could feel the breeze on his soaked fur, so at least he wasn't dead.

"By the gods! For a moment I thought you were gone!"

"Wha... what happened? The monster..."

"It decided it wasn't hungry anymore," Saki nodded as he placed his hand behind the other otter's head to support it, "I dove after you when you didn't resurface, I wish I had done it sooner."

Kodi propped himself up on an elbow and stared at the older man. It all came back. The tentacles that trapped him, the man who wrenched him from certain death, who held him tightly and shared his air with him on the way back. He gripped Saki's arm, tears welling up in his eyes. "You saved me..."

He fell silent when his eyes glimpsed his lower body. He was rock-hard, and the tip of his penis brushed against Saki's fur as the latter leaned over him.

"I'm sorry, I..." Kodi mumbled, adrenaline shooting through his veins.

Saki looked at the other male's exposure as if he had not noticed it before and reached out for a piece of cloth.

"Ah don't worry, it's just the body reacting to being touched..." he said and covered the erect manhood, "Now let's get back to land."

They sat together around a firepit dug into the sand and ate in silence, as if unsure how to tackle what had happened. Finally, Kodi tossed a fishbone into the fire and spoke.

"I'm sorry I got in trouble, I thought..."

"It's my fault," Saki interrupted, "I should have been more vigilant. Not the first time I've come across sea beasts in these waters, but never one that big and aggressive."

"Please don't tell my parents, they'd never let me go out to sea again."

"Oh I won't, they'd kill me. But you'll have an exciting story to tell your girlfriend."

Kodi stared at his clawed toes for a moment and swallowed a knot in his throat. "I'm not sure I want one."

Saki licked his lips, looking embarrassed in turn. "If you mean the stiffy, that's no crime. Happens to me too."

"You mean, with other guys?"

Saki crossed and uncrossed his legs nervously, and Kodi thought he saw something pushing at the front of the other man's loincloth. "Sometimes. I mean, people bond when they spend so much time together."

They looked at each other in the dim light of the fire. Kodi was the first to move. He shifted closer to his companion, his body tense but eager, and extended a hand to caress his thigh.

"What are you doing?" Saki blurted out.

"I want to thank you," Kodi whispered as his hand untied his companion's belt, "I can touch it if you'd like."

Saki grabbed Kodi's wrist and as he did so his loincloth came off, freeing a rigid erection. "Wha-? Don't be silly, you don't have to-"

"But I want to," Kodi replied, locking his eyes into the other man's, "And also, I need to know," he added, his voice trailing off.

A period of silence followed, as if each of the two was deciphering the other's mind. Kodi's loincloth was the next to go, and the youth was as stiff as his companion. The two otters drew closer and closer until their bodies touched. Trembling hands ventured between legs, awkwardly at first but soon bold enough to fondle sacks and stroke erect shafts.

The novel sensation of having his private parts stimulated by another person made Kodi whimper in excitement and alarm. Saki wrapped his free arm around his shoulders and nuzzled his cheek, soothing his nervousness. Small tongue flicks turned into a full-blown kiss that drove away fear and urged their bodies to seek more. Their dripping penises bumped and rubbed together, accidentally at first until Saki pushed his manhood against Kodi's and wrapped his palm tightly around them, squeezing and frotting deliberately.

It was almost too quick. Kodi gasped and erupted into the other man's paw, coating both their members with his youthful seed. Saki rocked his hips and pumped harder, before Kodi's shaft had a chance to soften. There was a groan and Kodi felt the other man convulse and spray a sticky warmth on his skin.

They laid side by side on the sand, thin ropes of cooling semen connecting their bodies. When they got up it was to wash their bodies in the sea under the moonlight. Kodi no longer minded that Saki could see his dangly parts, and as he splashed he even dared lift his tail a bit, now thrilled at the thought of his companion catching a glimpse of his underside. By the time they left the water they were both hard again. They kissed and cuddled on their way to the campfire and then Kodi laid on his back as Saki leaned over him, his good-sized member stiff and eager for a second round.

"Want me to show you something else?" Saki asked and licked his lips.

The slim otter squirmed. The excitement of a minute ago vanished into apprehension on his round face.

"Hey, what's wrong?" his companion frowned.

"Nothing, it's just... I really want to thank you for all you've done for me, but now I'm afraid it'll hurt, or that you'll be angry if I don't do it right..." he said, without taking his eyes off the man's expectant tool.

Saki looked puzzled for a second, then he understood and smiled.

"Aw, do you think I'd ever hurt you?"

He lowered his head over his companion's crotch and enveloped his penis in his mouth until the tip of his muzzle touched Kodi's belly. The latter almost recoiled in surprise at being thus serviced by the larger male, but the warmth that surrounded his member melted his tension and made him roll his head back.

Saki bobbed his head up and down and worked his tongue around the shaft's sensitive glans, swallowing Kodi's salty arousal as it oozed from his tip. Despite Saki's attention, it may have taken a long time for the pleasure to build up to a second orgasm had he not slipped two of his fingers between Kodi's cheeks. The lad grunted and spread his legs, allowing his lover to run his digits all the way to the spot under his tail. Saki did not attempt to penetrate the virgin hole, but he gently caressed it, feeling it twitch and quiver in response. Kodi reeled from the prodding, and splattered a watery climax onto Saki's palate and tongue. As soon as he had fired his last rope Saki gripped his own neglected shaft and jerked it. It took only a few wrist strokes for his dribbling lips to curl and for his manhood to erupt and blow warm juices all over Kodi's crotch and leg.

They fell asleep beside each other, too tired and happy to talk or to clean themselves up. They woke up all sticky, with their manhoods slightly numb and swollen from the night before, and dipped together in the chill water before breakfast.

"What now?" Kodi said as he finished his food.

"We're going diving of course. Those pearls won't harvest themselves."

"You know what I mean."

"Oh, we can do it again tonight if you'd like, maybe I'll even lift my tail for you."

"But the two of us, are we..."

"I'm married, with children, and a good fifteen years older than you are," Saki replied. His lips were smiling but his eyes had become serious. "I don't want you to do something you might regret later."

"It's a bit late for that," the young man frowned, his toes grinding a pit in the soft sand.

"Hey, you're the one who wanted to touch my stuff," Saki chuckled, "And for quite some time I might add."

"Your wife, does she know?"

"I love her, but she knows that when it comes to bed I prefer a different flavor. But heh, she also likes having me off her back from time to time so it suits us both."

Kodi rose and stood with his hands resting on his hips, his manly parts level with Saki's eyes. "That's all well and good for you, but what about me? What should I do?"

"Tsk, tsk," Saki pinched the young man's dangling penis and gently pulled him to a sitting position again. "I'm teaching you the ropes, and among divers that includes finding solace in each other on long trips."

He laid his hand on Kodi's shoulder and kissed him.

"I'll be happy to have you as a fishing partner and more for as long as you'd like. And if you don't fancy marrying a girl, well, just keep looking for that perfect pearl so that you can give it to another lad."
