Chpt. 4-God Help Us All
As I rose with an aching head I looked around for what remained of the bottle of whisky, picked it up and walked towards the window to open the blinds. As I pulled the shutters up and took a gulp of the whisky I heard a whisper from the corner that sounded like "get down...." the next thing I knew I was on at the other side of the room and where the window once was there was now a gapping, burning hole, as I looked up with my hearing ringing from shell shock I saw Matthew and john cowering in the corner, john threw me a pistol and ran out the front door leaving Matthew in the corner.
When I attempted to follow him I found myself confronted by a large bear drooling with blood red eyes, with a pump action sawn off in his paw. he raised the weapon to my head level slowly, I reacted by grabbing the weapon throwing it at the wall and breaking his arm, I was immediately thrust to the wall with on jab when I got up to react his head explode right in front of me covering me in his blood, and when the huge body fell to the ground Matthew was standing behind holding the smoking shotgun, him too covered in blood.
John and Luke came running in after hearing the shot and grabbed me seeing me covered in infected blood, violently pushing me against the wall checking my eyes and pulse, while Matthew dropped the gun and began to throw up.
I knew something was wrong Matthew looked up at me convulsing and with those blood red eyes, the others were too busy checking me, Matthew sprinted across the room pushing the other two aside and pushing me straight through the wall and landed on top of me dripping blood on the side of my face, I rapidly kicked him of and scrambled for my pistol.
When what was left of Matthew regained his footing he screamed and began sprinting towards me again I pointed the pistol at him taking carful aim and then without thought or felling I squeezed the trigger.
The round hit him directly in the forehead, he was dead before he hit the ground, after I realised what I had done I dropped the empty pistol and fell to my knees as my face fell into my hands, but I did not cry I simply looked at what I had done as everyone entered the room looking at me.
Everyone mourned in silence for a few minutes and, eventually we all agreed to get ready to leave, we only brought bare essentials boots, trousers, bulletproof vest, food, ammo, weapons and ourselves. Nobody talked while we began our long walk to the airfield, everyone felt the full impact of my decision and how we treated it.
No one wanted to talk not even if we saw something we wanted to investigate; we kept our mouths shut and walked into the endless horizon with the sun beating down on our heads, watching what was left of our world crumble around us.
