Among the Horses

Vaille
The Nevada desert. Cade loved it. Always had. Those splendid crimson sunrises. The hard cerulean and soft beige of midday. The burning orange and deep violet of sunset. From the wide-open spaces to the smallest crevices, the desert felt like home to him.
"So how'd it happen?" a liltingly accented voice asked from below.
"How'd what happen?" Cade asked as he examined the crack. He swept the build-up of detritus from it and poked his fingers in, pulling himself up a moment later. Above, an overhang. He grasped, testing. Once he was satisfied the rock wouldn't give, Cade hoisted himself from the arroyo into the bright Noon sun. He turned, offering his well-tanned hand.
"How did you become a were?" Dreki asked, clutching Cade as he climbed over the lip of the small canyon. "You weren't born a var, were you?"
Cade shook his head. "Nope. And my folks don't know about it, either." Cade was walking again, the stony ground crunching beneath his boots. "It just happened. One day I changed. I've been able to do it ever since."
"If you were not born a var, then there is a trigger," replied the Icelander as he trudged alongside his boyfriend. "There's always a trigger. Always. With the varúlfurs _,_ it's a bite. For a vardrage, like me, it was volcanic ash that mixed into one of the hot springs. But for you, for the varhesturs_ ,_ I cannot_-_
_ _ "Over here..." Cade interrupted, his pace quickening to a run. The weredragon jogged after him. Together, they crested a steep escarpment of crumbling sandstone and dolomite.
"My God, this is beautiful," Dreki whispered as he stared at the sweeping vistas, rolling plains and sun-baked basins. It was a sea of pastels - oranges, pinks and purples. Off in the distance, rolling thunderheads left wakes of living emerald while the silver haze of mountains danced on the horizon.
Cade flicked a hand against his boyfriend's arm, then pointed. "Just down there... See 'em? They're near that second ridge." Excitement tinged his voice. "Aren't they magnificient?"
Shielding his eyes with a hand, Dreki squinted. It took a moment or two, but he spotted the specks of brown, white and black racing across the hardpan of a dry lake. "Yeah, I think so. So those little things are wild mustangs?"
"Yup, though they're not so small up close. When I was a kid, I used to come out here by myself, you know, exploring. There's a herd that regularly migrated from here to Elko between seasons. Most of the horses were skittish, but a few got used to having me around. I eventually got close. I remember this little painted colt. He couldn't have been more than a yearling at the time. I named him Gunsmoke. He had the most beautiful markings - orange and white. He let me pet him a couple times."
The weredragon chuckled. "Well, that explains that..."
Cade shot him a glance. "What?"
"How you became varhestur. The colt was your trigger."
"Who knows?" Cade said with a shrug. "Though I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel some sort of connection with that pony and his herd, if that makes any sense..."
"It does. You are bonded to others of your kind. It'll always be that way."
"But none of those mustangs were varhesturs. They were simply horses."
"Perhaps, but you are still connected with them, whether they are var _or not. You are a member of their herd. That's how it is for a _var. I've been bonded with my _pakki _for a very, very long time."
Cade turned, mouth quirked and brow arched. Dreki had fine, boyish features, a pallid complexion and a head full of nearly platinum-blond hair. He didn't look a day over twenty. "Just how old are you, exactly?"
The weredragon smiled. "Come on, let's go visit your brothers."
There were still miles between the boys and the horses. Dreki had offered to fly out to the herd, but Cade quashed the idea, afraid that the dragon might scare the mustangs if they did. Besides, neither of them minded the hike. They spoke little as they chipped away at the miles - Cade's mind preoccupied with anticipation of reunion; Dreki swept away by the majestic beauty of the desert southwest.
About a quarter-mile from the herd, they stopped. Cade unbuttoned his shirt and stripped it off. He stepped out of his boots. Pulled off his socks. After slipping from his jeans and underwear, he neatly folded his clothes and tucked them neatly into his backpack.
"Stand around buck naked for too long out here and you're going to get sunburn on your ass," Dreki quipped.
"You'll burn. I'll tan..." Cade replied as he shifted. A coat of velvet-like fur spread across his body in splotches of white and brown. His lean frame became muscled. Feet grew into hooves. From between his triangle ears, a silky mane cascaded down his back, ending just above his tuft of tail. His nose broadened and his mouth widened as they merged into a muzzle. Cade shook his equine head. Within a matter of seconds, he'd transformed from a man into a humanoid paint horse.
"There's my stallion..." Dreki jibed.
"Shush," Cade replied. "I'm going to go greet a few of them. They'll be sketchy at first, so give them a few minutes to get used to me before you come flapping in."
Dreki nodded. "Will do."
The werehorse started trotting for the mustangs, his hooves clomping against the hard, dry lakebed. As he drew closer, the horses grew still. Alert. They were watching him. There was a snort and a whinny. Cade nickered in return. Another whinny. The trot slowed to a slow walk. Behind him, his tail flicked, then swayed freely. A few of the yearlings returned to their frolicking. A snort. Cade turned. A large painted mustang stood to the side, eyeing him.
"Gunsmoke?"
As if on cue, the horse started clomping towards him, cautious, juking his head in greeting.
"Hey boy, it is you!" Cade exclaimed. "You're all grown up!" The werehorse tossed his arms around the big stallion's neck and the two nuzzled one another warmly. Cade stroked the horse's mane with his large, two-fingered hand. He noticed one of the colts playing near the mares bore Gunsmoke's distinctive paint markings. "I see you've been busy, you stud!" He nipped at the horse; Gunsmoke playfully nipped back.
The sun blinked. Gunsmoke reared. Cade calmed him with a series of whinnies and quiet "shhhs." "It's okay, boy. He's my mate."
Dreki glided into view, kicking up a cloud of dust as he landed skidding on all fours. A plume of dust trailed in his wake. "I was starting to get jealous. Do I have competition?" Huge wings hanged folded against his back. His big, horned dragon's head rested atop his long neck. Thick, white, scaled skin covered his entire body and a series of silver plates lined his midsection. He stood on two legs, his massive lizard's tail a weighty counter-balance.
Cade nickered a laugh. "Nah, it's a horse thing. You wouldn't understand."
"Probably not," replied the dragon as he padded towards them.
"Draki, Gunsmoke. Gunsmoke, Dreki," Cade introduced. The horse sniffed the ground, searching for something to eat.
The weredragon laughed as he petted the stallion. "You realize he doesn't understand a word you're saying, right?"
Cade shrugged. "He may not understand the words, but he can sense the intent. That I know."
"Fair enough."
"Where's our stuff?"
"Somewhere out there," Dreki answered with a wave of his hand. "We'll fetch it when we leave tomorrow. If we can find it..."
Cade rolled his eyes. "Great." His hand slipped into the weredragon's. "Let's go say 'Hi' to the rest of the family."
Cade and Dreki sat beneath a scarlet sky and a Joshua tree. It would be dark soon. Neither of them minded. All around them, the horses were settling in for the night. The yearlings nested next to their mothers while the stallions stood in protectively nearby. Cade watched Gunsmoke nibble on some sagebrush.
"Told you he's beautiful," Cade said, his head against Dreki's shoulder. "I didn't' think I'd ever see him again, but here he is."
"You were drawn to him. You have his markings, you know. He's your trigger. Somehow, that horse made you what you are."
"I still don't get it. He's not a were. He's a horse. Just a horse."
Dreki shook his head. "You are not understanding. It doesn't take a var _to make a _var. It only takes a bond. It was the bond that led you here. These horses are as much your family as your human parents. You belong with them as much as you do your mother and father." As he spoke, Dreki lightly stroked his claws through Cade's mane.
Cade peered up into the dragon's sapphire eyes. They seemingly glowed with their own ethereal light. "I still don't get it."
The weredragon smiled. "You don't have to. Just know that you are home." His hand crept between the horses legs. Cade's eyes slid shut as Dreki's hand gently cupped his sack. He tilted his head up and the dragon's muzzle found his neck, kissing here and there. A tiny moan vibrated in the horse's throat.
With a hand to Cade's chest, Dreki nudged Cade onto his back. Taking the horse's semi-erect member in hand, he caressed it hard. A claw teased the medial ring. Pointed tongue licked the divot beneath the flat head. Craning his neck, Dreki suddenly went down on the horse, easily taking his entire length into his muzzle and letting it slip into his long throat.
Cade gasped in surprise. "Hey! Remember what I said about those teeth and my junk?"
Dreki ignored him. With each bob, he slowly rolled his head, massaging the sensitive length of horsemeat. Instantly, any hint of protest was dropped. Cade softly nickered, hips thrusting, body rocking in perfect unison with the dragon's sucking. A hand settled around his balls once more. Tugged them. Rolled them. A claw tickled its way beneath Cade's tail. Teased the puckered hole it found there. Pressed against it. Tenderly penetrated it, pushing inside. Cade snorted with ecstacy.
A mixture of saliva and pre dripped down the horse's length, soaking the fur surrounding his sheath. Dreki pulled his hand from beneath Cade's tail. He stroked the horse's member; rubbed around his sheath. His hand wet, he used the fluids as lube to slick his own stiff shaft. Dreki dipped and lifted, anchoring the horse's legs over his shoulders at the knees. Cade's hooves dangled freely in the air. Continuing to bob, throating his stallion's shaft, the dragon's hips slid forward, his hard, blue member pushing gently but firmly against Cade's soft hole. A tiny thrust and Cade snorted as the weredragon's head popped inside him. Drakiy pushed yet again, forcing the werehorse to take his second knot. With a final shove, he spread Cade wide as the third knot slipped inside. Draki savored the heat. He relished the pleasure that was all around him, gripping. He could feel the horse from the inside-out. The tiniest twitch. The smallest shudder.
Gripping Cade at the knees, he began making love to his mate in slow, measured strokes. The werehorse's tailhole opened and closed with each knot as the dragon thrust and withdrew. The sensation was unlike any Cade had ever experienced before. "Fuck..." the horse said with a buck and a groan.
Dreki smiled around the Cade's cock. His muzzle met bellyfur, the head of Cade's cock deep in his throat. Draki's tongue spiraled freely around Cade's medial ring, tickling all the way down to the thick sheath.
The werehorse's breathing grew heavy, ragged. Random twitches wracked his body. Dreki started thrusting faster, sucking harder, humming louder. His own cock was as hard as rock. The ridge along its underside had flared, along with each of his knots. Pleasure flooded through him, head to toe.
"God, I'm so close..." Cade cried out with a toss of his head. "I'm so... Oh God... Dreki...Nngggg!"
Cade's throws of passion pushed Dreki to the edge. With a final, loving thrust, the weredragon drove himself deep inside his mate and let himself go, his cock pumping seed as the horse erupted in in thick, warm spurts. Horsecum dripped down his throat, dribbled from his mouth. Draki swallowed Cade; Cade milked Dreki.
Dreki dropped to the ground beside Cade, spooning and tied. Both _vars _watched as Gunsmoke bedded down for the night. "Do you think that they ever feel like we do?" the dragon asked the horse after a long moment.
"I know they do, hon," Cade replied.
"Tonight was beautiful. Love ya."
The horse smiled in the soft moonlight. Dreki was still in him. "I love you too."
Among the horses, Cade and Dreki drifted off to sleep, wrapped in each other's arms.
