Raz Drakken
same as before
Chapter 1
Two for One
Twelve Dragon years have passed since Michael crowned Zor Zallerferd King of The Dragon World and left the Dragons to continue to grow as a civilization that rules with a fair and just hand.
Over in the Wind Region, in the capital of Cloud City; the streets are silent as the morning fog began to roll out. The sun barely peaks over the tallest mountain, which was called Sky Mountain and the morning dew starts to evaporate with the smell of freshly cut grass that was done the night before by the city's maintenance crew. The air was cool, but still was warm enough to enjoy as homes began to have smoke come from their kitchen chimneys as wives are getting up to cook breakfast for their families and get them ready for the day. Stores all over the city were beginning to get set up for the day as the mass of dragons starts to move about with the day to day business it has in stored.
One such individual stands in front of the mirror as she straightens her hat between two straight, two centi-dragon length horns on her head and had the word "Nurse" on it. The hat was colored pink and she had a dress the same color with a white apron around her waist. She took a step back to look at her outfit for any flaws she could see, but saw nothing but her white scales with gray running from her lower jaw down the front. She nodded as she grabbed her side bag and walked out her front into the cool air that made her feel good as she a deep breath. She spread her wings and took flight, moving fast and easily through the clouds as she looked down on the various towns and landscapes that passed by, then she looked forward and thought, "Today is the day. I just know it is. I have a good feeling that we are going to see a miracle happen." She wore a smile on her maw as she saw in the distance The Pearl Tower sparkling in the light of the morning suns as she started to lower herself and prepared to land.
One of the four guards in the western gate watch tower noticed her coming and smiled, "Oh, look. Here comes Nurse Gailwind!" The guard yelled as the others just smiled.
"Hey, Hector. Do you think she would fancy a date with you?" The guard asked as the others laughed as Hector smiled.
"Well, I do not know. But, I can always ask." Hector said as he looked up
at Nurse Gailwind and thought to himself, "I hope so. I think she is the most beautiful dragon around."
Hector was a Wind Dragon with black front scales with gray wings and stood a dragon's inch shorter than normal with three-quarters of a dragon's length tail that was relaxed at the moment. Hector wore a golden chest plate with shoulder, arm, elbow, and knee plated armor with an armored greave that went down to his knees and he wore a helmet with holes for his horns and covered the top of his head.
Nurse Gailwind landed right in front of him as she slowly walked up; trying to adjust her dress from the flight, then looked up and smiled.
"Hello guys, how you today?" Nurse Gailwind asked as most of them said hello causally as she walked up to Hector, whom was standing there with his nerves on end.
"Hello, Hector." She said as he swallowed and began to blush a little." "Oh...Hel-Hello Nurse Kari, Oh.... I mean Gailwind." Hector said as he blushed even further for stumbling over his words as Nurse Gailwind giggled a little and went passed and said, "See you later."
"Bye." Hector said as he watched her walk up the path then smacked his forehead as the other guards started to snicker as one of them asked, "Struck out again, hey buddy?" Hector just shook his head and returned to his duties as Nurse Gailwind made her way up the stone path.
"He's so cute when he stutters, and he tries so hard to ask me out. Maybe I will let him take me out tonight, if everything goes right." She thought.
As she walked, she noticed the mahogany wooden doors with the depiction of the four elements on them, and smiled as she walked up. She pulled open the door and walked into the entrance hall that was vast with the ceiling being forty-eight dragon lengths high with a golden staircase that led to the upper levels of The Pearl Tower and another staircase leading down to the lower level where the Nursery was.
Nurse Gailwind walked towards the staircase and noticed the fire lamps that lined the walls and paintings depicting the changes of the Dragons over the last thousand dragon years. She reached the top of the stairs and could feel the warm air coming from the basement, which made her close her eyes for a moment as she enjoyed the feeling and smiled, because she knew that the Nursery was properly heated to the right temperature. She opened her eyes and started descending the stairs as she went over a checklist in her head of what needed to be done once she made it down the stairs.
Nurse Gailwind arrived at the bottom of the stairs to a warm sandy floor that covered the entire Nursery with twelve rows of ten dragon eggs, each belonging to a region that sat on red, blue, green, and white pillows with golden tassels at all four corners. Along the outer wall, fire dragons would breathe fire and use their elemental skills to send it into metal pipes that lay beneath the sand, which would send heat through the pillows and kept the eggs at the right temperature of a hundred degrees Fahrenheit, because being one degree off could spell doom for the soul in side.
Nurses from the night shift were doing their last check of the eggs before letting the day shift take over for them. The Nurse over the night crew noticed Nurse Gailwind and went over to greet her.
"Hello, Nurse Gailwind." She said as Nurse Gailwind smiled and replied, "Good morning, Nurse River. How are the eggs doing this morning?" Nurse River was three-quarters of a dragon's length high with dark blue scales on her back and light blue on her front. Her gray wings had horns poking out the top and bottom of the main bone, and the wing span was the same as her height. Her tail was three-quarters of a dragon's length and mindlessly swished side to side as she had three horns on both sides of the head that spiraled up to create single horns, which were eight centi-dragons long. Nurse River wore a dress
similar to Nurse Gailwind except the color was white and wore a light blue apron that had the word "Nurse" on it, which matched her violet colored eyes that sparkled in the light.
Nurse River looked back at the rows of eggs and smiled as she answered, "They are perfectly incubated and should be hatching any day now. Oh, I hope it's today. I so wish to see the new baby dragons take their first breaths out in a new world. Do ya remember back when we first met and how exciting it was?" Nurse Gailwind smiled a little as she thought back to when they met. Both had been fresh out of medical training when they met and they instantly became friends, talking about whatever came to mind as they both were put on the day shift. The head Nurse at that time was doing the orientation for the new nurses when suddenly, a bell began to ring letting everyone know that the eggs were ready to be hatched into the world. Nurse Gailwind and Nurse River proved themselves proficient at handling their first delivery of new baby dragons. They were all over the place, getting everything ready faster than most of the nurses, who had been there for more than twenty dragon years and by themselves delivered more than half of the one hundred thirty count that were there. They were given rewards for doing so well on their first delivering of eggs and quickly moved up the latter until one day, Nurse River got promoted to Head Nurse of the night shift and Nurse Gailwind head of the day shift more than eight dragon years ago.
Nurse Gailwind answered, "Yes, and do not forget that this is the twelfth dragon year and you know what that means, right?"
"That we have time to do our nails?" Nurse River asked as Nurse Gail wind's face looked totally puzzled as she thought, "I just do not believe it. How can she be so smart and so clueless at times?"
"No! The twelfth dragon year is when the next heir to The Dragon Kingdom is hatched." Nurse Gailwind said as Nurse River smiled and said, "Oh, oops. I must have forgotten." Nurse Gailwind shook her head as she thought, "How do you forget something like that?"
"Well, how are the four eggs in the smaller room?" Gailwind asked as River smiled and answered, "They are in stable condition and waiting for you. Now, I think I will let you take over from here, because I am going home." Gailwind smiled as she waved her good bye as the day crew had already began work, checking the eggs and the temperatures. She stood there for a moment before returning to her duties and walked over to a dark brown door that had the words "The Private Nursery" written on it as she pulled it open and was instantly greeted with the smell of flowers, which had been put on the desk by her assistant who brought them from the Earth Region. The room was one-hundred twenty-four dragon lengths in space as all four eggs sat at the far eastern side. The desk was set close to the door with the desk being three-quarters of a dragon's length with a golden trim that accented the light brown wood that had the dragon's head symbol at the center. The flowers sat in a purple colored vase and were shaped like a dragon egg as they bloom different colors that released different types of flower fragrance, which would calm anyone who walked in. For the souls inside the eggs can sense the moods of everyone in the room, which can cause them to either be hatched with personality traits that are good or traits that need more development.
Nurse Gailwind walked over to the desk and lit a torch lamp she took off the wall before entering the room. The room instantly became brighter as she grabbed her scroll with the family names these eggs belonged too and walked over to the first egg. Starting on the far left and working towards the right, she made her checks, "Okay, first one belongs to Breeze and Stephanie Stillwater... mm...Everything seems to be fine. Next, we have Reed and Rena Earthbond... everything is okay here. Lindacego and Aria Whirlwind...everything is good and last, but not least, Miles and Sarah Drakken...everything seems to be..." Gailwind stopped in mid-sentence, because she noticed something on the egg, which was not there yesterday and got up close to get a better look. Her face changed from concentration to excitement, because of a small crack along the
top of the egg.
"Oh, hatching day has finally arrived! Yes!" Gailwind exclaimed as all four eggs started to move and crack.
Nurse Gailwind ran over to the desk, which had a key on it, then ran to a small door over on the western side of the room and unlocked it. Inside contained a lever to a bell that once pulled, would use wind from the outside to constantly ring. She pulled the level and the bell started ringing as several Nurses rushed in with carts, which had all they needed to deliver the hatch-lings.
"Nurse Ivy!" Gailwind yelled as Nurse Ivy came to a halt in front of her. Ivy stood a dragon's length and twenty-four dragon inches high with tan ram-shaped horns sitting on both sides of her head. She had a little white hat in between them as her green back scales and wings matched perfectly with her light brown front scales. She wore a white Nurse's dress that went down to her knees. Her tail was three-quarters of a dragon's length and lay relax as her brown eyes were full of energy.
"Yes Mam!" Nurse Ivy exclaimed as Nurse Gailwind smiled.
"I want you to start preparing letters to send to the families that the eggs are hatching." Gailwind said.
"Yes Mam!" Nurse Ivy said again as she walked quickly out of the room and went about what was requested of her.
Nurse Gailwind thought to herself as she went over to the Drakken egg, "She reminds me of me when I was that age and she is just as good as I was. I know that when I retire, I can feel confident about putting her in charge. Now, let us get these eggs hatched."
The Drakken egg already had along crack going down the right side until finally, with one loud pop; the top of the egg cracked all the way around and popped off. Nurse Gailwind looked inside and gasped, "OH, my word!" One of the nurses noticed and came to her side.
"What is it, Mam?" she asked as Nurse Gailwind collected her thoughts. "It's okay. I was just surprised, because there are two hatch-lings." Nurse Gailwind said as she looked again to get a better view at the two laying side by side, looking back up at her with smiling faces.
"Aw, they are so cute!" Nurse Gailwind said as she pulled the first one out. He had red scales on his back with black on the front and wrapped him in a blanket. She then sat him in a carriage as she pulled the other one out, who looked exactly the same. However, this one had yellow on his front as she, also wrapped him in a blanket and set him down in the same carriage as he belched flames. She jumped back as she patted her hat that was smoking a little and laughed as she thought, "You are definitely a fire breather and the Drakken's son."
She walked closer to the basket and noticed something on the left foot of the one with yellow. She bent down to take a closer look at what looked to be a dragon's head. She felt excitement build up inside her, but retained her composure as not to disturb the other Nurses from their duties.
"Nurse Ivy! Get in here!" Nurse Gailwind yelled as Nurse Ivy came back through the door with a confident look about her.
"Yes Mam?" Nurse Ivy exclaimed as she came to a halt in front of Gailwind.
"It is time that you gain some experience in management. I need to run an errand." Nurse Gailwind said as Nurse Ivy replied, "Yes, Mam!" and thought, "Yes, here is my big chance to impress Nurse Gailwind. I will not let her down."
Nurse Gailwind walked out of the room, leaving Nurse Ivy to handle the rest of the deliveries. She started walking up the stair case leading to the entrance hall and thought, "Yes, an heir has been hatched, but he has a twin. This is extremely rare. At least, I have not seen it in all the years I have been delivering eggs. Well, it should be fine, even if they are below normal hatch weight, they are still healthy baby dragons and we have gotten our heir, which is what counts." Nurse Gailwind smiled to herself as she started her way up the golden steps, leading to the throne room.
Way up high on the east side balcony stood King Zallerferd, who was wearing a light blue royal robe with the front being half opened revealing the middle of the chest down to the top of the stomach. He had his eyes closed in meditation with the smell of the sea on the wind that made him feel relaxed as he stood with his arms open to let the wind flow over his body. He missed being near the ocean and the feeling the water flow over his scales as he swam in it, but he rarely got to visit his region, because the duties of being King of The Dragon World came before pleasure and he knew that all too well. He was not ungrateful, because he loved this role, because one; it made feel in a better position to help his fellow dragons, and two; he was born with a special ability that made him right for this role. He was lost in his thoughts, but sensed someone was standing behind him.
"Yes, may I help you Kari?" King Zallerferd asked as Gailwind looked surprised he knew it was her and kind of good, because everyone else called her Gailwind which was standard protocol for subordinates to do.
"How did you know it was me, sir?" Gailwind asked as King Zallerferd smiled and replied, "You are the only one that enters a room quietly, making sure you are not disturbing anything. Now, how might I be of some service to you?"
Nurse Gailwind took a moment to collect her thoughts and then answered, "My Lord, your heir has been hatched. He bares the Dragon's Head Symbol on his left foot."
King Zallerferd's eyes opened as he looked back at her with a smile on his maw and asked, "That is wonderful news, indeed. What type of dragon is he?"
"He is a fire dragon, My Lord, but there is more. He has a twin brother who looks exactly the same except for the color on the front is black while the other is yellow." Gailwind said as King Zallerferd looked from her to the tiled floor, thinking as he went, "This is strange. I have never heard of twin baby dragons before, unless..."
"Kari, I shall go with you to see the twins. They are healthy young dragons after all and so I do not for see a problem other than sibling rivalry." King Zallerferd said with a chuckle.
Nurse Gailwind smiled as the two made their way back down the stairs and Gailwind thought to herself, "He had a long moment before answering me about the twins. I hope everything will be okay."
King Zallerferd was also deep in thought, "Could it truly be the two, who will save this world. But, I never thought it might be twins, unless it is part of the legend. Well, I will see how things play out. For now, I want to get a good look at our new heir."
King Zallerferd and Nurse Gailwind made it to the bottom of the stair case when King Zallerferd started to a little, causing Gailwind to smile as she asked, "What is it, My Lord?"
King Zallerferd shook his head as he said, "I remember when I was Ten Dragon Years old, I missed the last step of these stairs and came crashing to the floor. I was kind of clumsy back then."
Gailwind chuckled with him as they made their way down the stone steps and as the door grew closer, they could hear the cries of newly hatched
baby dragons. Nurse Gailwind opened the door to find all the eggs have been hatched and the babies put into their baskets as Nurse Gailwind stood up straight and yelled, "Attention! Make way for King Zallerferd!"
Everyone immediately stopped what they were doing and bowed as King Zallerferd gestured for them to continue. Everyone went about their business as Nurse Gailwind led him to The Private Nursery where all four eggs were hatched with the babies resting quietly. Nurse Ivy immediately stood at attention upon seeing Nurse Gailwind and King Zallerferd.
"It is okay, Ivy. I am here checking on my heir. How are he and his brother doing?" King Zallerferd asked as Ivy smiled and answered, "They are both doing fine, My Lord. They have both of their parent's traits in them."
King Zallerferd smiled as he quietly walked over and saw both of them sleeping side by side. He looked at The Dragon's Head Symbol on the left foot of the yellow one. "So, this is my next heir to be, and this must be his twin brother. If I am right about these two, they are going to be quiet a handful. Not to mention the other three, who will be the strongest in there element. Michael was truly thinking ahead when he made this world." King Zallerferd thought as he turned back to the others.
"Well, I think it might be best if we get these little guys home to their parents as soon as possible. Nurse Gailwind, I have a special assignment for you. I need you to take the Drakken's their twin baby dragons to them and let them know that as soon as the yellow reaches age four; he will become my new apprentice." King Zallerferd said as Nurse Gailwind replied, "Yes my Lord." She and Nurse Ivy bowed as King Zallerferd smiled and left them to their duties.
Gailwind walked over to the basket, thinking as she went, "I am glad he approved of them, but there is still something about these two that put him off a little. I cannot think of what it really is and I am sure if there was a real concern, he would have said something. It was as if he seemed almost excited about them being hatched, but he must have wanted to be sure first. So, we will wait and see."
Gailwind picked up the basket easily as not to wake the two sleeping inside and walked over to the door, then looked back. "Nurse Ivy, you're in charge until I come back." Gailwind said as Nurse Ivy nodded her head and watched her close the door.
Over in the Fire Region, in the capital of Inferno City, the suns were shining brightly as the air smelled of brimstone from the volcano that was constantly bellowing smoke. The city was alive with Fire Dragons, who were busy with the day to day duties of their lives. Stores were selling their goods to dragons that needed food to cook for their families.
The center building of Inferno City was called The Great Fire Hall and was the central government for the city and the Fire Region. Many dragons came and went about their business with most of them answering to the Governor; Miles Drakken.
Miles' office was very spacious as it had the walls lined with books and scrolls of all the laws and regulations of the Fire Region and of the entire Dragon World. The floor had red tiles with a flame symbol at the center with a cherry wood-desk that sat at the southern end of the room. There was a window looking out at Mt. Inferno as the sunlight poured in, filling the room with a golden glow. Miles sat in a golden-chair with the back and the seat being of red velvet, and the armrests coming out to form flames at the end.
Miles was working on some paperwork when Sarah came through the door. "Honey, we need to go home." Sarah said as she walked up beside him. Miles looked up at her, whom had red back scales and wings with yellow on her front. She had an hour glass figure that Miles still loved to this day.
"Right, let me sign this document and then we can go." Miles said as Sarah shook her head and watched him.
Miles had darker red scales on his back and wings with black on his front. He and Sarah were the same height of a Dragon's length, too. Miles wore his Governor clothes that consisted of a golden tunic with black leather pants and Sarah had a light blue dress on that matched her blue eyes while Miles' where a light orange.
"Alright, all done. Let us go home." Miles said as Sarah smiled and went with him out of the office into the hall as she thought, "I have a feeling we need to get home quickly. I am not sure why other than our egg might have hatched. Maybe I am being paranoid." They walked outside, spread their wings and took flight, moving fast through the clouds. Within a few dragon minutes, they were landing in their front yard.
"I beat you, ha." Sarah exclaimed as she laughed.
"I let you beat me." Miles said casually as Sarah just laughed as she and her husband walked up to the house.
The house was white with a red trim that was made of stone. It stood one hundred fifty dragon lengths high and five hundred dragon lengths wide as it faced Mt. Inferno with many windows that had draperies that had the fire symbol on them. The flowers lined the house and the walkways that led up to the house. Miles and Sarah walked up onto their pouch and was about to open the door when they heard someone call from behind.
"Miles and Sarah, look behind you!" A voice came that made Miles and Sarah turn around to see Nurse Gailwind landing in their walkway with a basket in her hand and waving with the other.
"Miles, it is Gailwind and she has our baby." Sarah exclaimed as she and Miles met her halfway.
"I would prefer to talk inside, my dears. I have some important news." Nurse Gailwind said as Miles and Sarah looked at each other with the thought that something might be wrong, but nodded as they all went into the house.
The common room was vast as it stood one hundred dragon lengths and seventy dragon lengths wide. It was decorated in the Fire Region colors with a fire place which had a sofa and a couple of chairs sitting next to it. They all took a seat with Miles and Sarah sitting together on the sofa as Nurse Gailwind took the chair next to them on the left.
"Now, what is this about?" Miles asked as Nurse Gailwind took the basket and opened it as Miles and Sarah looked in.
"Oh my, there must be a mistake, because you have two babies there, not one." Miles said as Gailwind smiled even wider and said, "There is no mistake. Congratulations, you have twins."
Miles and Sarah looked at each other with a surprised expression on their faces, but were quite pleased with this.
"Before you say anything else, I must also tell you that the one with yellow is the next King of The Dragon World, because he bears the mark on his left foot. When he reaches age four, he will need to start his apprenticeship through the King." Gailwind said as Miles and Sarah looked at each other again, then miles replied, "This is absolutely amazing. I mean having twins is one thing, but having one of them as King of The Dragon World, too is simply amazing and I know he must be trained by the King. However, I want him to go to public school there at The Tower."
Nurse Gailwind's smile faded as she spoke, "Miles; as Governor, you above anyone else know that your son cannot allow himself to be distracted from his purpose." Miles looked straight at her, trying not to lose his temper as he spoke evenly, "Listen here. I am very much aware of my position and I do not need a constant reminder. Also, I will not deny my son public education,
because it will help him build his social skills and help him to make friends. He cannot go through life without some kind of social interaction."
Nurse Gailwind's smile returned as she replied, "You have a valid point, Mr. Drakken. I must now return to the Nursery, but before I go, I would like to know what names you had picked out for your babies."
Sarah smiled a little as she looked down at the one with yellow and said, "Well, we were planning on naming our baby Raz, and so we will call the one with yellow, Raz and the other one...mm...How about Maz? So their names can rhyme. I mean they are twins and so it would make sense." Nurse Gailwind smiled as she nodded.
"Okay, well I must go, but if you need any help, just let me know. Bye." Gailwind said as she walked out the door.
Miles and Sarah looked at each other, totally blown away about what had happened and was glad to have twins. "Well, let's take these two to their new bedrooms and put them to bed." Sarah said as she and Miles took the twins up to their bedroom and closed the door.
