"Welcome aboard, rookie. You got three hours until general quarters."

Tenyth grunted as a bundle of sheets, a blanket, and a pillow were thrust into his arms. He glared at the green-uniformed skunk behind the desk, then shifted his duffel over his shoulder and headed down the metal walkway, through the open airlock and into the ship proper.

He wondered again why he'd enlisted with the Space Marines. The news was always full of their heroic exploits, fighting demons or whatever, but the rabbit was really more interested in a steady paycheck.

The slim lapine followed the signs mounted on the walls pointing towards crew quarters. He was jostled on both sides as dozens of other fresh meat recruits made their way down the narrow metal corridors. The steel plates were painted black and lit and regular intervals by lights.

The ship would leave orbit in an hour. Tenyth wanted to be bunked down before lift-off. He'd been interplanetary once before, when he was very young, and hated the feeling of his stomach dropping out as the G-forces accelerated them out of the atmosphere.

Crew quarters for the marines were on the lower levels. The Navy, which actually ran the ship, were on the upper decks.

Recruits were bunked in with a more experienced marine, who would act as their mentor for the duration of their first posting. Tenyth didn't know who his bunk mate would be, but the slim rabbit was already getting annoyed with the situation as he tripped over a horse's outstretched leg.

Cursing under his breath, he struggled with his bags down another corridor, until he got to his assigned room. He pressed his palm to the lock and the door hissed open. Somebody bumped him from behind and he tumbled inside, landing in a heap in the middle of the room, sheets and pillow scattering.

The door closed behind him as he stood up, then bent over to pick up his bedding, cursing again under his breath.

"I can teach you a few new words," someone said. "You're gonna have to learn to cuss better 'n that."

Tenyth glanced up. Lounging on one of the metal-frame bunk beds was a tall, muscular dragon. Jade green scales glinted in the overhead light. The dragon stared at Tenyth, eyes running up and down the rabbit's body. He wasn't wearing a jacket, but Tenyth noticed it hung over the bed post and stifled a sigh. A sergeant. He was bunked with a damned sergeant. Just his luck.

"I'm Taiko. Sergeant Taiko, though I won't hold you to call me by rank while we're in here," the dragon said, swinging his legs over the edge of the bed. His green chest flexed and rippled as he lifted his arms over his head, stretching out.

"Private Tenyth, sir."

Tenyth dropped his duffel and snapped off a salute, but the dragon waved him away and yawned. Tenyth shrugged and picked up his stuff again, then dumped them on the unoccupied bed. The rabbit was normally calm and clear-headed, but the trip through the crowded corridors - and the previous trip through final processing, where he'd been ID'd, tagged, and outfitted - had left him frazzled.

"So, first-timer, huh?"

Tenyth was obviously a first-timer. He bit back the first sarcastic response, something he'd learned to do quickly in boot camp, and nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"Boot camp still sucks?"

Tenyth grinned, remembering the endless drills and training. "Still sucks."

"Things are pretty boring on a ship while we're going to wherever they ship us," Taiko said, laying back down on his bed. "Not a lot to do besides work out and watch holotapes."

Tenyth draped his sheets over his bunk. "That's what I heard."

"My job is to make sure you fit in to the service," Taiko continued. "See you don't get cabin fever or start going nuts with anticipation on the way to the front."

"How?" Tenyth asked. He hadn't really considered the long trip - six months stuck on the ship until they landed.

"There are a few ways to keep your mind off things."

Tenyth glanced at the big male. He was tall, broad-shouldered, in obviously good shape. Tenyth was in good shape as well, lean and trim, with a solid chest and belly on his slim figure, but he wasn't nearly the dragon's size. Purple eyes stared back at Tenyth as he matched gazes with the dragon.

Taiko sat up again, then stood. His head barely missed hitting the ceiling of the cramped bunkroom, which was less than twelve-by-twelve feet for the two of them.

"Attention all hands: 10 minutes until liftoff."

Taiko glanced at the digital clock built into the wall above the hatch to the room, then reached out for Tenyth and closed his hand around the white-furred rabbit's shoulder.

"Well, I may as well introduce you to my favorite way to stave off boredom," the dragon said, voice lowering.
