#7 of Time, Confusion, and the Feelings that Arise
Well here is the next installment! It is a tad disjointed as my mind is a jumble of ideas right now... so for that I apologize... Hopefully it is still enjoyable to any who decide to read! As always comments and critiques are wanted and welcome!! :3
The surrounding darkness almost seemed too stifling. Flynn lay motionless on his bed, his mind a jumbled mass of relief, anger, and a deep sadness. The relief was due to the fact that it was all over. He did not have to fret about what was to come as it had all already happened. The sadness was due to his loss of Kathleen and the placing aside of his affection for her. The collie knew that placing the feelings for her aside was not quite a must, but it was necessary for him to cope with what she had told him. Then there was the anger. A deep seated rage that had never before entered the heart and mind of one so forgiving. Most troubles could be shrugged off, but infidelity was not something Flynn ever expected from the feline. Kat had betrayed him with his own brother. Conall had tried to call him over the past few hours, of course Flynn could not stomach the thought of talking to him. Even meditation failed to suppress the violent urges that welled up from deep within. Now was not the time to speak with anyone, much less those two.
The canine's eyes remained unblinking as the door creaked slowly open. A shadow poked through the crack and its ears seemed to flicker. Obviously Emrys was worried about him. Flynn had said nothing in response to the jindo's greeting when he walked in. It was only fair that his friend was concerned. The door closed slowly and Flynn felt the edge of his mattress depress as a soft tail draped across s legs.
"Flynn? Is there something you need to talk about?" A forepaw tentatively caressed the collie's arm.
"There is absolutely nothing I want to talk about..."
"I know that much. I did not ask if you wanted to talk about it, I asked if you need to. There is a difference."
"It? So you know already?"
"Kat told me. Conall called too."
Flynn felt his anger flare at the mention of those names. How dare they act like they care about him after what they had done. Flynn felt a furry form press against his body. The warmth was irritatingly calming. Couldn't he just be angry for once? "Not sure Brandon would approve of this."
Emrys huffed. "Don't even. I am not going to just leave you to brood."
A smile reached the collie's muzzle. Once again Emrys knew exactly how he operated. Sighing, he let loose with a flurry of words that seemed to flow forth of their own accord. All of his fears, his regrets seemed to force their way to the surface. He spoke of the pain of betrayal, the sadness over the end of what was once a wonderful relationship, and the regrets he had that he had failed to hold things together. After all, it was his fault that Kat had felt the need to seek comfort elsewhere. If he had only stayed with her then they would still be together.
A pain interrupted his words and spots of color danced across the darkness. Emrys had slapped him, hard. It was as painful as it was surprising. No words escaped his muzzle this time, only silence as his ears laid back berated. His cheek stung under the thick fur as his forepaw tried to massage the pain away.
"I will not sit by while you blame yourself for this Flynn McEwen. You have done nothing but give your heart to her. You were amazing to her. She fucked up, do you understand me? Kat and Conall betrayed you! I will not listen to how you could have done things differently! Kat is to blame here! I can't believe she would do this to you! I just... I want to strangle them both!"
Silence followed as Emrys shook with anger beside the collie. Flynn turned over and pulled Emrys close. The jindo hugged tightly as Flynn cleared his mind. Emrys was right of course. Flynn was not at fault. If only he really felt convinced of that.
"Listen... Brandon and I are having a friend of his for dinner. We both would really like for you to join us. I refuse to take no for an answer. So just get ready and be out in a couple of hours okay? You have to move on Flynn. I would normally give you some time before I pushed you but after all that has happened I think the sooner you get your mind off of things the better. What better way to do that than to spend some time with friends?"
Flynn nodded in acquiescence. He was not going to argue. Being alone was not a very desirable option at this point. Emrys hugged him one last time before departing from the room. Flynn slowly prepared himself for the upcoming dinner. Talking may not be an option, but at least he could attempt to enjoy himself. Maybe he would break open that bottle of Booker's Emrys had bought a few days past. The collie had never really been a heavy drinker, opting for the occasional craft beer or spiced wine on a cold day. This particular day though, drinking may be helpful for numbing this pain inside.
Flynn barely remembered walking into the living room to join the three other furs already conversing in the room. He looked up to see Brandon and Flynn focusing on dinner while a slender ocelot sat on the counter beside them. Flynn found himself staring at the newcomer. He was quite attractive, with neck length raven hair and golden fur that seemed to glow even in the dim light of their kitchen. His tail and arms were spotted with black rosettes and his rounded ears framed an almost innocent face. Cute was not quite the word for him, beautiful? Flynn had never really described a male as beautiful, yet that was the description that came to mind. No doubt Emrys would have a more descriptive word for it. He walked up almost shyly, pulling his eyes away from the feline. No thoughts of Kat even prodded at his mind. It was oddly refreshing.
"Well look who finally joined us!" Brandon grinned in that boyish way that almost reminded Flynn of Conall. It was all he could do to remind himself that this was not his brother. No, that smile was all the two had in common. The German shepherd was taller than Conall, with deep black fur and a well-muscled body. His tail wagged happily as he continued with his portion of the dinner preparations. He seemed like a genuinely caring individual and he and Emrys were head over heels for each other. It was refreshing to know that the jindo was in such good paws.
Flynn attempted a half-hearted smile. "Yeah, Emrys threatened me a bit so I thought it wise not to disappoint..."
"Well he does have a knack for that sort of thing. By the way, Flynn I would like you to meet an old friend of mine. Caim this is Flynn."
The ocelot smirked and slid off the counter top with a grace usually reserved for dancers. He padded over to the collie and looked him over, one eyebrow raised appraisingly. "Hmm... Well you are cuter than I originally thought."
Flynn blushed and stammered a reply. "Th-thank you... I guess..."
"You guess? You should appreciate such a complement. I don't go around telling every fur they are cute..."
Brandon chuckled softly, "He isn't lying there. Only a select few get that privilege of being called cute by the great Caim."
"Very funny puppy... You are just jealous of how adorable I am."
"Wait... what does?" The shep paused and seemed to decide better of his retort. "Never mind... I think you two should go set the table. Help Emrys and I out a bit."
"No worries. I got it covered." Flynn padded off almost eagerly, glad to be able to separate himself from the other three. He was not sure that he could stop himself from staring at Caim much longer. At this rate, dinner was going to be quite an interesting time.
Caim watched the collie saunter off. His jade green eyes giving the canine a once over before turning to find Brandon and Emrys both grinning mischievously. His ears twitched as he realized what sort of thoughts were most likely running through their heads. "If either of you says one word..."
"Awe, I think it is adorable! You and Flynn would make a cute match!" Emrys giggled as Brandon chuckled in agreement.
"You two are pushing your luck here..."
"Oh we are just messing with you... besides I think Flynn could use a distraction after all that happened." The shep whimpered as an elbow connected with his side.
"Not something to bring up... If he were to hear it would set him to brooding again..."
Caim cocked his head curiously. The two canines glanced at each other, obviously not wanting to share what had happened to their friend. "Oh no, you can't just say something like that and not elaborate. Spill it! Or will I have to use my skills to get it out of the two of you?"
Emrys raised an eyebrow, "Skills?"
"Look at me... Do you really think I couldn't drag it out of you?"
Brandon laughed as Emrys smiled and nodded in ascent. "Fine, point taken. Well... Flynn just found out that his girlfriend cheated on him... He cared for her a lot so it was quite a blow when she confessed to him..."
Caim's expression softened. He enjoyed the thrill of having a fling every now and then, but never had he been disloyal to a mate. It was one thing he never could picture himself doing. Why be with someone if you had the capacity to cheat on them? True he had been sexually attracted to others during times in which he was dating someone, but as soon as those feelings arose the relationship was ended quickly. No commitment would last if one longed for the touch of another. It was almost heart breaking that someone would cheat on such an interesting specimen. Flynn was lucky Caim was there to help take his mind off of things. Who could think of anything depressing when in the presence of one as beautiful as he?
The jindo focused on the ocelot thoughtfully. "Caim, if you can just make him smile again I will be forever in your debt."
The ocelot's ears perked in surprise. It was like Emrys could read his mind. "I suppose I could try and take his mind off things... It would be a shame for him to miss out on the fun just because of some stupid female."
Emrys sniffed, "Kat was not just some stupid female..."
"Oh? So it was not stupid to tear someone's heart apart by participating in adulterous activities? Well then we have a different definition of stupid." Caim hopped off the table and padded after the collie, tail shifting almost eagerly behind him.
Brandon stared for moment before speaking. "Sweetheart, you will have to forgive Caim at times. He lacks a fully functional internal filter when it comes to matters such as this. He really does mean well."
"I know... I just am having such a difficult time with the whole situation... Kat was my friend. She never seemed like the type to do this to Flynn. I feel like I am losing a friend now, yet at the same time I feel that she does not deserve my friendship. Caim just doesn't understand how it feels when you learn someone is not who you thought they were..."
The shepherd shook his head slowly, eyes both drilling into the jindo's head. "Do you really think that? Seriously Emrys, just look at Caim's eyes whenever he looks at Flynn. There is more understanding from that one; any other fur can get. Honestly I have never seen that from him, nor did I ever expect to. It seems he has finally decided."
Emrys stared off in the direction of the dining room. His thoughts were of Flynn and Caim. The ocelot would hopefully be in their cheering Flynn up right now. Caim was very cute, more so even than Emrys himself. Maybe Flynn would not be averse to this. Emrys felt a sense of happiness at the prospect. Happiness, along with something else.
Dinner went much better than Flynn could have ever anticipated. His dark mood had the collie worried that he would spoil the mood for everyone involved. Yet, he found himself laughing more often than not. Perhaps it was the fact that he had already decided to break it off with Kat and that fact softened the blow of her betrayal. Or maybe it was the fact that the dynamic between the other three furs was just much too interesting not to captivate him. Brandon and Caim regaled them all with tales of high school antics. It seemed to turn into a competition of sorts as one attempted to embarrass the other more with each story. The feeling of it all was so light-hearted that Flynn could not help but cheer up.
After their repast the four furs took their conversation into the living room. Brandon and Emrys opted to clean up while Flynn was left alone to chat with Caim. The collie felt a bit awkward as conversation had never been his forte. Luckily Emrys had already opened a bottle of bourbon and Flynn had found solace in its warm embrace. Caim sat next to him, looking around the room as if trying to decide whether the décor suited him or not. Flynn smiled and laid his head back, relaxing and letting the sweet feeling of intoxication take him.
Caim looked over to find Flynn's eyes shut tight. His face heated slightly and once again he found himself blushing thanks to the collie. It was not a bad feeling, just not one he was used to. Normally others blushed at him, straight or not. He took another sip of bourbon and scooted closer to the canine, leaning in to catch his scent. It was quite nice, a soft scent of sandalwood and musk that set his nose tingling. His tail swayed happily as he found himself leaning further in, almost burying his nose in the collie's fur. The feline would have said the bourbon lowered his inhibitions, but to be frank he had not yet reached that amount in his system. So to describe himself as tipsy would be a fallacy. It was his own infatuation with this male canine that spurred him to reduce his distance. The collie's fur looked soft and had a more than healthy shine. His body was lithe and firm, similar to Brandon yet not quite as thick. The bushy tail situated beside him was all too tempting to squeeze and caress. The collie's face was kind and seemed to draw into a smile even now. His lips looked soft too, almost as soft as Caim's own. He could not help but wonder what kissing this one would be like. Should he attempt such a thing? It was much more forward than even he was used to being. The feline always went after what he wanted, not hesitating in his actions. Now he found himself nervous at the prospect of a simple kiss. He had just met this male, yet already he found himself wanting. Why was this happening now of all times?
It was a touch, the lightest brush of lip on lip. Flynn's eyes opened slowly to find a blushing feline kissing him softly. His first instinct was to resist, yet he sat motionless. His mind was unclear, a mixture of drink and confusion leaving him paralyzed as the feline remained. Before the canine knew what he was doing, a forepaw laid itself upon the slender ocelot's back. Lips came together firmly as he returned Caim's kiss fervently. This was much too odd. Flynn had never kissed another male before, yet here he was enjoying the feeling. There was not the slightest desire to pull away as the two remained where they were. It was a blissful time, one which he would not soon forget. A moment where he felt comfortable, safe, and wanted.
Brandon looked on through the doorway as Emrys finished drying the last dish. It had not taken long for Caim to make a move, an unusual move at that. A kiss to the feline was something deep. There was more between those two than even the shepherd had guessed. It reminded him all too much of himself and Emrys. That fact alone let him know just how good of an idea this whole set up had been.
"Wow... he is fast."
"Oh? Flynn does not seem to mind. In fact I daresay he is enjoying himself."
"With another male no-less. That bourbon was stronger than I anticipated..."
Brandon chuckled and pulled his mate close. "It is a bit stiff, but the most potent of poisons is that of betrayal me sweet. Flynn is feeling more vulnerable now than he ever has. The fact that someone has shown a want for him is what has driven him to return that affection. Gender matters not at this point. I just hope Caim does not end up a rebound..."
"No... that won't happen... I know Flynn. He would not do that to someone, no matter what he was going through at the time. He is much too kindhearted."
"I hope you're right love... Caim was infatuated at first sight though he would never admit it. Flynn is a perfect match for a mate, the only thing that made me hesitate was the collie's preference. Though after what all you have told me, this break up was the push he needed to finally give in."
"I have no idea why I never noticed it before..."
"You had feelings for him. He was in love with Kathleen so your mind forced you to ignore the signs. They were not obvious, don't get me wrong. However if you had looked from the outside in you would have noticed."
Emrys nodded, a smile creeping onto his face as elation filled him. Flynn had only just broken things off with Kat a few hours prior. He thought the collie would be depressed for months, yet there he was, Caim wrapped lovingly in his arms. It was an odd sight. One that filled Emrys with an old longing. It was time Brandon paid some attention to him, time to finally put these old feelings to rest.
