Kristoffer's Redemption
Chapter 5. The diary.
Jennifer had to stop and think a moment before she had an idea. "Kristoffer,
With your permission I want to try an experiment with you, okay?" Kristoffer, was a bit startled by the word experiment, but he mulled it over a while before he sighed and looked up to her. "okay," he said just before Jennifer cut him off thinking the okay was his answer "okay awesome you stay right here" she said with a giggle at the irony of telling him to stay where he was when he was locked in a high chair he couldn't get out of even if he'd wanted too. "And I will be right back!" she said happily and began to leave when Kristoffer, shouted out to her "wait! Jennifer I wasn't done!" this made her stop and turn back to him with a quizzical look about her face. "What is it?" she asked inquisitively and then waited for Kristoffer, to reply. "Okay. So say that I was to give my permission for this 'experiment'" he said putting added emphasis on the word as he continued, "what would the experiment be? Like would it hurt? Or is it something I'd have to do eventually and you want to try and see if I'm ready for it early or like what?" to this response Jennifer couldn't help be chuckle a little bit but rather than giving him a straight answer, she gave him a cryptic message that held the answer to his question. "Don't worry pup, I've done this with others before and they say it was somewhat of a pain in the start but after a while they had found their place in the diary of Jane." She said with a wink then walked off, unbeknownst to her Kristoffer was very familiar with that specific line as he had listened to it in his favorite song many more times than he would care to count, but the meaning of the lines relevance eluded him until Jennifer returned her hands behind her back.
"Okay Kristoffer, Pick a paw." She said with a grin, Kristoffer hated this game. He always lost, but he sighed and thought a bit and finally he made his choice. "Right paw." He said clearly aggravated at the game, Jennifer decided to play with him just a bit more at seeing his aggravation to the game. "Really? Are you sure?" Kristoffer growled a little bit before he answered. "Yes I'm sure!" he snapped back, this time Jennifer was annoyed at his hostility. So she decided to punish him just a bit, "Kristoffer pick again please pup." She said knowing he'd chose the left paw this time, but instead he did something that caught her off guard. "Tail." He said with a sly grin, Jennifer chuckled as she his perceptiveness showed her up again and she hadn't even been aware of it. "Alright pup. You win." She said as she walked over and set a capped pen down on the table and unsnapped the tray to his high chair so he could take the pen in his paw. Kristoffer however knew what kind of pen it was already as they was his favorite kind. And seeing the pen made him realize just what the experiment was and why she had used such a quote to explain the experiment. She wanted him to keep a diary. Kristoffer looked up at Jennifer. And surprised her with his question. "So umm is it a fine point nib, or is it a broad nib? I prefer broad nibs so I can make the calligraphy legible and such." Jennifer was taken aback not just that he knew it was a fountain pen but also at the fact that he had actually made such a statement about his hand writing so she decided to test him at this, "Okay pup, so what's the experiment?" she asked to see if he really had shown her up twice in one day, "You want me to keep a Diary, and you want me to use a pen so I have to take my time with writing it out." Kristoffer replied as he picked up the pen and took the cap off to find it was a number 5 wide nib which was his ideal size for calligraphy, he loved how he could manipulate the curve and make it thick, thin, or fine with a single stroke. "My, My, My, It seems we underestimated your sills of observation. Your just a regular Sherlock holms aren't you?" she said as she ruffled his head fur and set the black book with a small Elizabethan era padlock down in front of him, and produced a key from her pocket and put it on a small string and gave it too Kristoffer. "not really. Sherlock was the best, only other match was Professor James Moriartie, but even then Sherlock was still faster than him." Kristoffer said sending shock waves through Jennifer's, mind when he clearly stated the name of Sherlock's nemesis, shocking her with how well read he was yet again. "Ohh dear! Kristoffer, I didn't know you were familiar with Sir Arthur Conan Doyal's works!" Kristoffer, just nodded and unlocked the diary and began to flip the pages, feeling them with his fingertips as he did so then he looked to Jennifer and smiled "leather over wood binding, curved and ribbed spine, ½ foot long ribbon place marker, parchment pages stitched together with a black nylon rope thread, the strap to lock is sown on with triple stitches for better durability and is in a square and X patron for better coverage, the strap has a built in lock for the purpose of not needing to replace one if its lost....I'm Impressed! This is very high quality, super expensive and not really too easy to find." Jennifer's jaw dropped so much that Kristoffer worried it had somehow come unhinged! Had he really surprised her that much? Jennifer, quickly regained her self but was still visibly surprised that Kristoffer knew such things by just looking and feeling the paper and leather!
"Well Kristoffer, you're just full of surprises aren't you?" Jennifer said as she crouched down to ruffle his head fur. Kristoffer smiled and nodded his reply with a grin on his muzzle, "but it's nice to be able to simply learn to trust you of my own accord, and not to be forced to trust you by some means. I mean I realize that, being in your3 care there are something's that the situation requires me to trust you about, such as my safety, my food, and such like that, but as far as things like sharing my personal info and interests is left up to me, and I'm glad for that, because it tells me that you trust me to warm up to you on my own terms, its normally really hard to earn my trust....but, you're doing it so easily and with such small and minor actions!" Jennifer smiled and laughed a little bit. "That's because I pay attention to the small and trivial things. It's often the trivial things that have the most influence." She said smiling as she watched Kristoffer play with the pen between his fingers, as like some might do in a school room setting while the teacher is speaking. Kristoffer however dropped the pen the second he heard her say the word "trivial", this reaction made Jennifer wonder if she had done something wrong because Kristoffer was now sitting up straight with a very clearly stern look on his face as he spoke five simple yet very powerful words. "Believe me, Nothing is trivial." He said sternly as he reached down and picked up his pen again, Jennifer smiled and nodded in agreement to his statement. "Truer words were never spoken, no matter how small, or how minor it may seem. It's always the little things give you away, isn't it?" Jennifer said as she reached down and hugged Kristoffer tightly, then she pulled away and had a large smile on her face, "Also, I have some good news!" Kristoffer, smiled and wagged his tail at this and cutely licked Jennifer's, nose with a slight giggle "ohh really now? What might that be?" Kristoffer, asked happily never suspecting what tomorrow will have in store for him.
"You're getting a sister tomorrow!" Jennifer announced proudly, this time it was Kristoffer's jaw's turn to drop to the floor, his jaw dropped and his pen fell from his hand again in shock and surprise this time and his eyes got as wide as dinner plates. He was shocked in every meaning, and sense of the word.
