Tempest: The Prologue
#1 of Tempest
I can remember how excited I was, walking towards the big white building. My paws clasped the flowers tightly and my tail seemed to sway faster and faster. My dad looked down at me, the western dragon giving me a look that was rather odd. He seemed distant and a little sad... maybe afraid? My mom said I was always good at figuring out people's true feelings just by a glance, though sometimes my dad was hard to figure out. He had two sets of horns in front of his small ears, the front pair being longer than the second. The hair on his head was cut short, maybe two inches at most because he said he didn't like uncontrolled looks. I never did see his wings but my mom told me about them and how he used them to take her on a flight through the starry sky. His eyes were a vivid red and his scales were black as night, except at the edges, which were a neon cyan. Mother told me often that his scales were one of his most spectacular qualities, that the neon edges glowed in the moonlight. It made me a little jealous as I had no scales.
Instead I took mainly after my mom in looks. My mother was probably the most beautiful wolf I have ever seen. Her fur was white as pristine snow and her eyes were a gorgeous amber. My father was about 6'7" in height, possibly more, which dwarfed my mom at 5'10". My mom had a single patch of fur that was black and it resided at her at her tail. It was like a perfect circle at the middle of her tail. She said it was her lucky spot.
People never believe me when I say that I have dragon in me. That is until they see my horns in front of my ears. I only had one ivory set that stuck forward. They were only a couple inches tall which made it difficult for them to be seen through my dark gray fur. My chest and belly were black, the rest of my fur being the same dark gray. My eyes were a vivid red, just like my dad. It seemed that's all I got from my dad, besides the small studs a top my head. My tail also took after my dad, being long and reptalian-like, though still covered with dark gray fur (the underside was black like my front). It was about half as long as I was tall, and I was around 4'6" at the time.
It showed it's flexibility as it wagged back and forth. My dad cleared his throat which caught my attention. I looked at him and found him staring at my tail. I slowly back and blinked as I saw the nuisance swaying to and fro. My paw grabbed the base of may tail and it slowly came to a stop. My head turned back to father who gave a nod. He straightened the black suit he wore and that's when it finally hit me. He was nervous. This giant dragon was nervous and that made me smile.
He caught sight of the smile and gave me a questioning look. I just shook my head as I made sure all the roses were in their perfect arrangement. Once we were prepped and looking decent we advanced forward. As the doors slid open to the large building a wave of air that smelled like cleaner hit me square in the nose. It burned a little but I pushed it aside. My tail was starting to sway as excitement began to pick up in me once more. My father put his hand behind me and led me to an elevator.
As the doors slid open with a high pitched ding I stepped in. My father and I stepped to the back as a fur couple, a female cheetah and male tiger, got on as well. The doors slid closed and proceeded upward. After a couple of floors the doors slid back open and the couple got off. Once they got off the doors closed again and we proceeded upward. Two more floors passed by and the doors opened once more. My father took a breath and stepped out with me right behind him.
We traveled down the hallway and seemed to catch every furs' eyes as we walked. I smiled, assuming that they liked how sharply dressed we were. I looked good in a vest if I do say so myself. As we got to the end of the hallway my dad stopped. He turned towards the door and let out the breath he had been holding in (my dad had a pair of lungs on him). Hesitantly he reached up, turned the handle, and slowly pushed the door open.
A familiar smell wafted out and tickled my nose. It was almost nostalgic as a big grin spread across my muzzle. I walked in and saw that same beautiful lying in bed, my father currently hugging her tight. Just seeing her made my tail wag happily. She looked over at me and gave me a soft smile. I walked in and handed her the flowers. She took them in her paws and smiled wider.
"Demodo, did you pick these up for me?" She asked. I beamed with pride as I gave a nod.
"Dad said I could get you some. And I remember that you said white roses were a favorite of yours." I smiled harder as she gave them a hug.
"Thank you, baby. They're the best." She said then held open her paws. I jumped happily before runnig over to her bedside and throwing myself into her arms. She hugged me tightly, swaying softly, before planting a kiss on my head.
My dad and I spent the entire day with her, catching her up on my school and friends. My dad talked to her about the company and about how the finishing touches of our newly built house were coming along. She said she couldn't wait to go home and see it all. I couldn't wait to show her my room. It was so awesome. But, like all great things, it had to come to and end. The sky outside had gotten dark and it was time for us to go back to the house.
I gave my mom another big hug. "Alright my little Krypto, I'll see you again." She said as she kissed my cheek, a smile forming on my muzzle from the nickname. She then leaned close to my ear. "Never be afraid to be who you are, baby." I gave her a confused look before giving a nod.
"Of course Mama." I said. I walked over to the door and watched as my dad kissed and hugged my mom. They said their 'I love yous' and my father and I were on our way home.
I never did see my mother again. Not unless you count a casket being lowered into the ground. I stood near the hole, my paws clenched into tight fists. My eyes ran over the dark wood prison that held my mother. I couldn't describe the pain even if I wanted, but to try, I'd say someone literally just shoved their paw into my chest, ripping a huge hole in my torso. My father was in a chair surrounded by a couple of furs. He was crying hard, his face buried in his claws.
Thunder rumbled in the sky, almost making me believe the sky was also grieving the passing of the wolf. Not once did a single tear slid down my face, even as the dirt began to pour over onto the white roses that decorated the casket. Someone by now had come over to me with an umbrella and held it to give me a little shelter from the downpour. I slowly fell to my knees and reached out into the hole that was slowly beginning to fill. I wanted one of those roses... I needed one. However the fur that gave me shelter also held me back as I tried my hardest to grab one.
All I wanted was a single flower, but as the dirt covered up the last one, my paw fell to the ground. It was gone... They were all gone... She was gone... With a few more words from the pastor furs began to depart. I didn't move, not until my mother's mom came and knelt beside me. I looked over at her and saw the puffiness in her eyes that seemed to be in everyone's. However I also saw strength in them as well. That wasn't something I noticed in the others. She looked at me, her white coat reminding me so much of mother.
"Let's go Demodo." She said quietly. She grabbed my paw and helped me up. As she led me away I looked back at the freshly disturbed dirt, not taking my eyes off it until it was no longer visible from the distance. From that day on, I closed in on myself. I withdrew from my friends though still managed to keep my grades decent.
Like I said, all great things come to an end...
***10 years later***
"Mom... I miss you..." I said quietly as I looked at the horizon before me. My grandma had told me that I was a strong boy the night she was buried. She noticed I didn't shed a tear as I watched them place her into the ground. She pointed out, even to this day, that I still had not mourn her passing and that I should talk to someone about my pain. I clued her out every time she began to rant about seeing a councellor or a therapist.
Talking wasn't going to bring the dead back, so what the hell was the point. My father was sure as hell no help. He came home from work, drank, and if I was lucky, would go through the night without a beating from him, accusing me for her death. "It's your fault she's gone." He would always shout. "She was fine until you were born." Each cry of rage only cut my heart deeper and deeper, yet still I didn't argue back. I have not raised one my paws back in protest each time he struck me. I just let him get it out and move on.
I took the pain and pushed it to the side. I would be alright. I always was ok. I'm fucking Krypto!
"I'm fucking Krypto!" I shouted at the topof my lungs. My voice echoed out into the air. I waited for the echoes to quiet down before I let out a sigh. "I'm... I'm Krypto... I can save..."
It hurt... My eyes burned and it hurt. I blinked as hard as I could. More pain began to start in my chest. My paw grasped my torso as I began breathing heavy. What was wrong with me... Why did everything hurt? My vision blurred as the burning was beginning to recede. When it was gone I felt a tear slide down my cheek. W-was I crying?
"I...I can save..." I stuttered. {No you can't...} The voice inside was harsh and caused me to choke up even more. {You couldn't even save your own mother. Some Superdog you are.}. I hung my head in defeat, falling ot my knees, bringing my balled paws to the ground. My paws rang out in pain as they hit the ground. I felt more tears fall.
"Mom!" I shouted as I leaned back on my knees, letting my tears run down freely. "I'm sorry, Mom!! Come back! Please come back!" I shouted nonstop. I sat there for a half hour... maybe an hour. {She's not coming back to you... So go to her.} My ears slowly rose up to the idea. I got to my feet and walked closer to the edge.
"Mom... I'll see you soon." I said as a small smile formed on muzzle. My vision was still blurry as I took a small breath. I held out my arms, waiting for my arms to wrap around me. My eyes closed as I leaned forward and welcomed the fall to the river below.
