Chapter 17.

Crisp, clean air. Birdsong off in the distance. The loud rustle of wind through leaves. A wet scratching sensation on my nose. Again, again, and again. I opened my eyes to the flash of teeth, white fur, and a long pink tongue. I sat up onto my haunches and Snow head butted my shoulder, rubbing her muzzle all over me.

I stared down at my paws, feeling a wave of dizziness as my mind wrestled with how insignificant my body had become, how much smaller, I was. I felt young again, my heart raced with the vitality that came online. I needed no reflection to know that all the gray was missing from my muzzle.

I looked around and saw other members of my pack blinking sleep from their eyes, yawning, stretching out. I turned and saw my big Alpha approaching me. His wolf form was just as impressive as his Siberian Husky body. I saw the barest hint of his markings under all his fur, leaving no doubts to his heritage. His green eyes met mine, and I looked away with a small whimper. He sniffed me and placed his huge jaws around my nose. He didn't bite down, just held there.

"Remember who's boss, Keman." My eyes opened wide, he let go. Where did that voice come from?

Mist sat on his haunches and stared at me, with his head twisted. The look asked if I really wanted to be that stupid. I looked away, feeling absurd.

That day we hunted and took down what I knew was a Moose. It was the most fun I had had in a very long time. We stuffed ourselves, and lounged around in the sun, licking the blood off each other's fur. I thought about what I had gained and what I had lost, and still felt like I came out way ahead. I was the luckiest wolf in the universe.

I only wish it had lasted longer.
