Ch7. Orientation Pt.2
#8 of Pioneer State
So, sorry it's been a bit. I took a quick break from writing on this series to hone my skills a little more. This is just a quick filler piece. We have a new species and a new character. Geno. More on him later. The next chapter will have some "fun" things in it.
Aden sighed as the speaker continued. "All the wonderful opportunities that await you here at state...blah blah blah." He felt his control over his old self slip a little, but let it. Sometimes he couldn't help it. The brash young pony came back, and he'd scoff, sneer, sigh, or snort at someone out of instinct. This time it was a gusty sigh that came out of his thick equine nostrils.
He was sitting in a lecture hall, listen to one of the faculty prate about all the benefits here at State. He already knew the spiel, but went through the trial of orientation. Dex had his own sessions to go through. The University had broken the freshmen up into several groups for the tour. He wondered how Dex's session had gone.
The picture on the huge screen behind the speaker, a middle aged deer, changed to smiling faces of graduates. Aden tried not to groan at the cheesy picture of smiling humans, and furs, was plastered for all to see. He heard a sigh next to him and glanced to his left.
He was a little shocked at what sat next to him. He'd heard of the Dragon Folk, but had never seen one. They were incredibly rare. This one looked pained, and bored at the same time. Aden took the chance to admire the creature. The first thing Aden noticed was how thin he was. Almost femine in nature, but then Aden noticed the definition of fine muscles underneath the light white scales. The dragon was busy with his phone, playing some type of game. A black stripe ran from the dragon's muzzle up his head, and down to the back of his shirt. A thick tail wound around his waist, and down along his legs as he sat, hunched over, intent on his phone.
Aden noticed the guy had piercing blue eyes as he sat in the lecture seat. The white tank top, and black cargo pants hung on his frame a bit. He tried not to stare for too long, but soon noticed the dragon was staring at him with a look of annoyance on his face.
"Sorry" Aden commented ducking his head, whispering so as to not disturb the other "enraptured" students. The dragon nodded once, and went back to his phone.
"I just wish this was voluntary instead of mandatory" the dragon muttered a little. Aden caught the sight of very sharp teeth withing the muzzle. The Dragon Folk were incredibly rare. Only a few families existed. They were very secretive, and rarely left their family units. Aden was very shocked to see one in a public university as most found themselves at more prestigious places like Yale, Harvard, or even Berkley.
He felt a chuckle escape his throat at the comment. "I know, I chose to go here, you don't need to sell me on it now....it's a little late for that" Aden quipped. The dragon snorted in reply.
"So now, we'll form into groups." The cervine wound down from his speech. "Group 1, over here, group 2...." The University had formed this section into groups by major. General Studies, Political Science, and Sociology were Aden's group, and he was shocked to find the dragon in his group. The two stood near each other. He was shocked to discover the dragon was smaller than him by at least one large equine head.
Huh, I always thought they'd be taller.
The dragon's blond hair was unkempt, and he seemed to have a bored attitude with everything. He kept his eye on his phone as he continued to play. They'd be taking a tour of the campus to see if anything sparked their interest in extra curricular activities. Aden already had football on his list, but was wondering what else might strike him as fun to do. This was a time to enjoy himself after all.
The group he was in exited the hall, and began walking down a broad walkway along the campus. The leader, a human female, was talking excitedly about the campus history of "over one hundred twenty years of scholastic achievement and historic importance...."
Aden sighed again. The summer day was beautiful, perfect weather. Only a few wispy clouds were in the sky, and the trees filtered the light into distinct darker patches in the brilliant sun. The dragon snorted again.
"I agree, we already paid admission..." It took a moment for Aden to realize the dragon was following up on the earlier comment he had made. He laughed a little at the offhandedness of the comment, finding he liked the young dragon's attitude immediately. "I'm Aden by the way..."
For the first time, the dragon tore his eyes from the phone and looked over at the equine, taking the sight in. He didn't get out much, and equines were not as common as the other furs like canine, or feline. He smirked a little. The guy was very hot. Nice musculature, jet black shiny fur, a white star on his broad forehead, and casual jeans and t-shirt.
"Geno, good to meet you." The two shook hands, one clawed wickedly, the other furred. They smiled at each other. "So what do you study?" Geno asked. Aden took a deep breath and ran his hand through his mane. "Well Political Science for now, you?" Geno paused. "Well, for now, just general studies, I just don't know for sure what I want to do." Aden nodded his equine head.
"Well that's normal, not everyone knows for sure. It's why our high school and middle school take so long to get through. We're better acclimated to figure out the answer now at 21. " Geno nodded absently.
The tour leader was ranting about some important political demonstration that took place "on this spot in 1952." Aden sighed at the same time Geno did. They both smiled at each other recognizing kindred spirits.
**
The two walked back to the Student Union after the tour. "So which elective do you think you'll take?" Geno asked eagerly. Aden shook his mane a little. "I don't know, there were so many. I'm already on the football team so..." Geno's eyes went wide. "You are!? You're a jock?" Aden laughed loudly. The slender young dragon stared at him open mouthed. "Um, yes, hello? Didn't you notice my build?" Geno chuckled a little at this. "Right, I did miss that part."
"Well I think I've decided on some art classes really. I've never done it before, but well, it looks like fun." Aden thought back to the tour of the art studios and found the works the students had created the year before fascinating. He could draw a little, but was no great artisit, still he thought he might try his hand at being creative a little.
Geno nodded. "I thought about it, but I don't know. I'm thinking of joining the Computer club. I might want to see what programing games is like. That might be kind of cool." The young dragon smirked.
"What will your parents think though, that fee was pretty steep." Aden added calmly. The technology electives were expensive. The funds were used to pay for lisencing for software and development packages. Aden suddenly realised he was walking by himself along the sidewalk. He glanced back. The dragon did not look pleased.
"I don't fucking care what they think. I'm in this for myself, understand!?" Geno rumbled deeply. His eyes had grown cold, and his hands were balled into fists. "Ok ok ok!" Aden murmured. "I'm sorry, it's fine, I didn't mean to upset you...."
Geno shook his head a little. "Sorry, I just don't like talking about them. I'm here on my own terms." Aden nodded. He remembered what it was like to be "abandonded" by a parent. For him, his dad was very much a part of his life, but once Aden's mom, Emily, had died, his father had basicly switched off. He'd become someone who saw his son, and didn't really disciplin him. It had taken Aden a long time with Dex to realize just how misbehaved he was.
His thoughts turned to Dex. Geno was no equine, but he did need help and friends. Maybe he could get his human love to pay some attention to Geno and get him calmed down. Aden shook his head absently as he thought this. "I'm sorry man, I am, but hey, I could use a friend, and I bet you could to." He replied to the apology. Geno looked a little more happy at this.
"Yeah, I could. Hey, I need to go back to my apartment, but here's my number ok?" Geno grabbed Aden's phone from the horses back pocket and quickly typed his own number into the contacts list before Aden could protest. He felt a smirk on his face. Brash, kind, lazy, a techie, but someone who could be an eager friend.
"Ok, well have a great day, and I'll see you a week from Monday when classes start. We'll compare schedules. Who knows, we might have a class together. The dragon nodded eagerly, walking off without responding.
"Strange guy" Aden muttered a smile on his equine face.
