Luke's POV: Breakfast and agreements

Luke hated breakfasts. Even late breakfasts. Eating breakfast meant he had to get up early and couldn't sleep in until the last possible second. Luke liked to sleep, especially since Ben had come into his life. And his dreams.

Nathan was unfair. He'd rubbed Luke's feet until he'd fallen asleep. He hadn't made Luke go upstairs to his own bed, instead he'd put a blanket over him. Then he'd woken Luke by gently shaking his shoulder instead of yelling from the doorway.

Nathan was unfair. He'd enlisted Ben in getting Luke up. Ben's tongue knew just how to tickle Luke's ears in ways he couldn't stand. Nuzzling was one thing. Licking and then blowing was quite another.

Nathan was unfair. The French toast with maple syrup was delicious. For this, Luke would gladly get up early in the morning.

"Nathan," Luke asked meekly, "could I have another piece, please?" It was only his fourth.

"Sure. It's the last one, though. I'm all out of eggs."

Nathan was unfair. Giving up the last piece instead of eating it himself.

"I'll split it with you," Luke offered.

"No thanks, I've had more than enough."

Nathan was unfair. Making him feel guilty about eating so much.

"When are you planning to get groceries? I'll gladly pay for my share." He really didn't have much money left, but he'd be getting his next stipend check on the first. Maybe that'd be soon enough.

"Finances. Yeah, I've been meaning to talk to you about that."

The room, of course. How much rent was he going to be wanting? "It's going to take a while to find someone to sublet my apartment. I won't be able to pay much rent until I can do that."

"Yeah, that's part of it. I can't afford to have you pay rent."

Huh? "Can't afford it?"

"Taxes. And the associated paperwork. And the local zoning. It's all a complicated legal mess I really don't want to have to think about. Groceries are different, though. I would appreciate it if you'd buy your own, or at any rate an amount of stuff comparable to what you eat. I don't mind sharing, but you do eat a lot more than I do. And I suspect you'll usually want a higher fat content."

"That makes sense. When are you planning to go shopping? I guess we oughta get stuff at the same time."

"I usually go on Sunday afternoon. That OK?"

"Sure."

"The other main thing is chores." Nathan chuckled. "Don't make a face like that. I just mean clean up after yourself -- stuff I wouldn't have to do if you weren't here. Like when you sleep on the couch. You do shed a little, so running the vacuum cleaner over it would be good. Oh, and doing your own laundry. Stuff like that."

If he thought Luke was shedding now, just wait until spring!

"Well, I guess that all sounds reasonable." Luke stared at his now empty plate. Oops. Stuff he wouldn't have to do... "Do you have a dishwasher?"

Nathan grinned and waved toward the sink. Luke's heart sank.

"It's under the counter right next to the sink. Easy enough to use."

The doorbell rang.

"There's the delivery I was expecting. If you'd take care of the dishes, I'd appreciate it."

Nathan was unfair. He'd fixed breakfast, now he expected Luke to clean up!

The dishwasher fluid was in the cabinet under the sink.
