Michael walked back into the headquarters; his armor was covered with red runes. He walked to his room and watched as Spyro and Cynder left theirs.

“What are you two doing?" He asked

“We're going to go check out the city, see some of the sights we've been passing by." Spyro told them.

“I have news from home." Michael informed them

They both perked up

“The Genrir guardians have started a program to search for four new guardians. Flame and Ember have been working with them to cast a search across the planet. Aura and Sam have hopped to a nearby galaxy and are reestablishing contact with our old allies. The king of Fen is planning on stepping off his throne, and Camry wants you two to be there. It's not for a while, so your good."

“The guardians are retiring?" Spyro gasped

“Yes, it's time for them to pass their knowledge before its too late." Michael replied

Spyro looked stunned.

“The program will select ten of each of the four main elements, and then they will train them, and decide which one will become the guardian. If you wish, you can join them after were done here, the process only takes two weeks. I have already pulled a few participants for them." Michael told them

“I kind of want to be a part of that process." Spyro told him “It just feels right."

“We are halfway through containing the plague, and when we're done we can attack the rift, save this dimension, and book it out of here." Michael replied

They nodded, and Michael walked into his room. Spyro led Cynder out of the building and into the street. He looked at a map for a moment before taking flight and leading her over the city. They landed in a different square.

“Just in time." Spyro spoke

Cynder looked over at him “Just in time for what?"

He didn't answer, suddenly thousands of lights in every color turned on, lighting the square. Cynder gasped as they blinked and flickered, creating patterns of light and color. She did not know how these strange lights worked, but she didn't care. They watched the colorful lights flash around the whole square, they were paired with the launching of fireworks, big balls of fire and sparks shimmered in the sky. They watched the show for an hour, before it ended and Cynder smiled brightly. Spyro took flight, and led her out of the city. He took her to a dark quiet spot next to a shallow river. He walked up to her, and nuzzled her, before pushing her into the river. She laughed as she splashed into the water. He followed her in, leaping and splashing her with his wing. Cynder forgot about her troubles and smiled as she played in the river with her mate, her smile was so big her face was sore. She wrestled and ran around with Spyro, enjoying the cool water on her scales. They quickly tired themselves out, and laid down in the pebble filled river. The small rocks massaged her sore muscles just right. Spyro smiled at her and watched as she smiled and enjoyed the flow of the clear water against her body. She smiled back at him and flipped over on her back, closing her eyes.

“You always know how to make me smile." She spoke

“I can't resist seeing it on your face." Spyro replied “It brightens my entire world."

“You sap." Cynder replied

Spyro watched the moon rise and shine down upon his mate. The white marks on her face glowed brightly. They laid like this for a few hours, before Cynder got up and dried herself off. Spyro watched as she stretched her beautiful black body and walk elegantly towards the grass. He got up and followed her, they rolled in the grass to dry off, then flew back to the room. When they got to the headquarters, Michael, Trice, and Bea were preparing to leave.

“What's going on?" Spyro asked

“The plague is trying to break through a part of the shields, we're going to go strengthen it." Michael answered

Spyro nodded and a portal opened in front of them. The three dragons stepped through and vanished.

Spyro opened his eyes and looked out at the beach out their window. He smiled at Cynder curled up against him, her face buried in his neck. Michael had left them there with Josh and Grace for the last two weeks. They watched the black chunk in the sky, and were glad to see that it stopped spreading. Spyro knew that they would be needed at the veil soon enough. Then they would go home and help the guardians train the next generation. Cynder snored lightly, and clutched him tightly. Eventually, she woke up and smiled at him, she got up and stretched, stunning Spyro with her beauty and elegance. He laughed and got up, then walked into the makeshift kitchen and cooked a quick meal. Cynder went and sat down at the beach, Spyro joined her and handed her a plate. They ate in silence, watching the waves splash against the shore. Grace and Josh walked along the beach, and smiled at them.

“Another beautiful morning." Grace stated

Cynder smiled “I love it here."

“You know, all we have to do is ask and Michael won't ever come back, we can stay here." Spyro told her

Her eyes flashed at the thought. “I would love that, but no, there are others that need us, we have friends and family that I would like to stay close with."

Grace looked out to the horizon. “I would too, but Michael offered Josh a place in the training program to be the electric guardian. We got a letter this morning."

Spyro looked over at Josh. “Are you ready to not understand a word your tutor is saying to you?"

Josh paled “Is it really that bad?"

Spyro laughed, Cynder shouldered him. “You just need to know the definition of, every word, ever"

Josh looked over at her “Uh oh" He gulped.

“Volteer is a bit… Talkative, to say the least, but as an electric dragon you know where he comes from." Spyro told him

“Imagine when he was training, he would not shut up, it annoyed Cyril to no end." Michael's voice came from behind them.

The whole group jumped a foot into the air, and Grace grabbed her chest, as if she was having a heart attack.

“Do you ever announce your arrival?" Cynder yelled at him

Michael smiled evilly “Now why would I do that?"

“To not scare us!" Cynder shot back

He squinted his eyes at her. “But that's the fun part. I just spent two weeks fixing shields and floating around in a void plague, I need some fun."

“Your like Sparx, but more powerful." Cynder groaned

His eyes flashed a bright blue “My jokes are simple and have no lasting effect, his pranks are elaborately planned and carried out. I'm just better, many, MANY years of experience has taught me how to mess with people."

Cynder rolled her eyes at him, and he vanished.

“Great, you angered our way home." Spyro mumbled

She slapped the side of her tailblade against Spyro's flank, making him yip.

“You think I'm mad?" Michael asked behind them again

He laughed as they jumped again and turned angerly.

“I just wanted to do it again." He smirked

Cynder growled and charged him, he quickly turned to shadow and she flew right through him.

“Save it for when were training the next guardians." Michael chuckled at her “Sometimes you act so much like your mother it's almost impossible to tell the difference."

“How do you teleport like that?" Spyro asked

“Ethereal magic, you want to try it?" He answered

“Sure" Spyro and Grace said at the same time.

Instantly, they were back at the headquarters, Trice was standing to the side, she raised an eyebrow at them as they appeared.

“Ugh, that made me dizzy." Cynder groaned

Spyro nodded in agreement, suddenly pale.

“You're not going to like the travel to the rift then, you have two hours to prepare." Michael told them “Josh and Grace will stay; we can't risk them"

They looked disappointed but nodded, then Spyro and Cynder went to their old room to prepare. They put on their armor, and wrote protection runes on each other. Michael had taught them the basics on how to defend against dark magic. Then they ate some food and packed their things, knowing that when they return, they will pick them up and leave immediately. They met with Michael and he was covered in runes. He was talking worriedly with Trice and Bea. Michael turned to them when they arrived.

“I don't think you two should come, there is a chance you might get hurt, bad." Michael told them

“What changed?" Spyro asked

“I started laying the foundations for the portal, and the feedback I received displayed a massive amount of dark magic." Michael answered

Spyro looked over to Cynder, who nodded.

“We can do it." He told Michael

Michael nodded, then turned to a ring on the ground, he charged his ethereal power and the ring glowed, and a portal burst forth in its center. The five dragons stepped through it, and onto a strange place.

Cynder fell onto a hard, unyielding, stone floor. Grey spread out into the horizon from all directions. Cynder gasped as she felt the pure evil reach her, it tried to draw her back into corruption. She shook her head, forcing it away. The runes on her armor burned a bright red, protecting her from the extreme magic. She heard a roar, and turned to see Michael, Bea, and Trice writhing on the ground. Their forms were changing, Cynder could see Michael's eyes turning to red. Spikes grew out of his back, he massively grew in size and his wings became torn and ragged. His tailblade became serrated in spots, and chipped in others. His teeth became long, and dark. Cynder gasped as he got up, while his mate and daughter collapsed. Cynder looked around for Spyro but couldn't find him, she spotted another black dragon that she vaguely recognized. She gasped as it turned to her, it was Dark Spyro, it… he spotted her and lunged. She flinched, preparing for the attack but the dark dragon was intercepted by Michael. Dark Spyro roared as Michael pinned him to the ground, he tried to fire a dark fire ball at him, but Michael reflected the blast and used his magic to shut Spyro's jaw. He looked over at Cynder and shouted something, she couldn't hear what he was saying but followed his gaze to some sort of rift. Cynder knew this was the veil, and that she must close it. She started to run towards it, but stopped when she heard a roar. Dark Spyro had broken the bindings around his mouth and tried to bite Michael. He dodged the bites and fired a pure light blast directly into the dark dragon's face, then roared, a sharp, powerful roar. Cynder turned back to the veil but froze as a red tendril ran from it, it slithered its way towards Michael. He stared at it with wide eyes, and tried to slice at it with his tailblade. It ducked it and stabbed through his side. Cynder's eyes went wide as the tip of the tendril appeared on the other side of Michael, puncturing his heart and lungs. Cynder continued her run towards the opening and gasped as another tendril shot forward, she tried to duck but it was already too late. A blast of magic hit the tendril just before it sank into her side, she groaned and collapsed as the tendril stabbed through her. She reached out towards the portal and charged her dark element. A red ball appeared in her paw and expanded, before she threw it at the portal. When the red ball struck the portal, a bright flash blinded her, making her close her eyes. She gasped as she felt the tendril that stabbed her vanish, the howling wind and strange whispers were gone. Cynder opened her eyes and watched as blood poured out of her wounds. She looked over to see Trice and Bea slowly getting up. Michael collapsed, letting go of the dark dragon he had pinned. The dragon leaped up and looked around, once it looked it's eyes on Cynder it groaned and stumbled. Soon the black scales turned to purple, and Spyro returned. He looked at his fallen mate and screamed her name. Bea ran up beside Cynder and charged her magic, she sent a powerful blast of magic into the black dragoness, it healed her organs, but id didn't heal everything. Bea stumbled back as Spyro ran up to her and started nuzzling her neck, calling her name. She felt her eyes close, and she fell asleep.

Cynder opened her eyes and gasped, she quickly looked around to realize that they were back in their bedroom in Faun. Spyro was curled around her and lifted his head and began to nuzzle her worriedly.

“It's okay, were okay, were home." He said, licking her jaw and cheeks.

She groaned in pain and looked down at a bandage wrapped around her side where the tendril stabbed her.

“How long was I out?" She asked

“A few hours, I carried you home while Michael finished clearing the void. Did you see that form, that looked scarier than Malefor" He replied

Cynder tried to get up, but Spyro grabbed her.

“You shouldn't stand." He told her

“I'm fine, I need to stretch, and do something. We haven't done anything in weeks, just one battle isn't enough." She smiled

“Well, we could go to the academy, they are having the introduction ceremony in an hour or so." Spyro told her

She smiled and nodded, he let go of her and she got up. A flash of pain ran through her body as she stretched, but she ignored it. Spyro saw her flinch, and gave her a worried look before they walked out of the house. Flame and Ember quickly ran up to them.

“I heard what happened, how are you feeling?" Ember asked

“I'm fine, Bea's magic probably saved me a lot of pain, we're going to the academy for the ceremony." She answered

They walked and exchanged stories until they reached the main gates of a large collection of buildings. The guard nodded to them and opened the door, allowing them entry. Forty dragons, ten of each element were dotted around, chatting and readying for the training to come. Spyro spotted Michael standing in the instructor's platform with the three guardians. They smiled down at the two younger dragons when they joined them.

“I'm surprised to see you out and about." Michael stated, a similar bandage was wrapped around his chest. “That magic is a powerful one."

“Without Bea I probably would still be bleeding." Cynder replied “Tell her I said thanks."

“Spyro!" Volteer exclaimed “I see you have been through many adventures since we met last."

Spyro and Cynder exchanged looks.

“In case you were wondering, Michael cast a spell that allows me to speak normally, and it isn't a strain on my mind, it's quite genius." Volteer smiled

“Took him three thousand years" Cyril mumbled

“Nevertheless, I'm glad we can have your experience and expertise as well as your young body as an instructor." Terrador cut in

“Instructor?" Spyro replied

“Yes, if you want it the position is yours, we can't spar with our students like you can, and your fire element is just as powerful as Ignitus' was, if not more, so you can handle the fire guardian role." He explained

Spyro flinched, knowing that Ignitus would want him to choose his replacement, but not wanting to think about it too much. He nodded and turned out to the trainees below them.

“A quick rundown, we will spend a few days with the whole group, then we will select one and personally train them until we decide they are ready." Cyril explained.

“Remember, you must choose based on power, leadership skills, smarts, strength, and their ability to learn. You must choose a leader, not the best fighter." Terrador added

Spyro nodded again.
