I wanted to write something in space and it turns out I rather enjoyed this so now it's going to be a series.

Tal, a shapeshifting xenobiologist, has a rather unique chosen specialisation but it seems he's just what the ISG needs and so he's sent to a ship and must now deal with settling in.

'The ISG has noticed that many crews of many ships get frustrated with the isolation of space travel and so get angry and disobey orders. Statistics show that sexual frustration is the main contributor to this behaviour and so, to combat this, is experimenting with The Horizon and issuing it a 'xenobiologist'. He is a fully qualified xenobiologist and, after completing his degree and working for 3 years, has specialised in what he has termed xenosexology. It is the ISG's hope that by issuing The Horizon with a xenobiologist it will mitigate the recently discovered issue.'

Captain Brigs leans back in his chair after reading the Inter-Space Government's message from the screen on his desk. He'd signed off on this but that didn't make it any less strange. Captain Brigs had thought it was a joke at first, the ISG issuing a glorified prostitute to the ship, there was no way. But the request for him to sign off on it came soon after and he was forced to realise that it wasn't a joke. The ship had been in the station for two months getting this xenobiologist's lab set up and later today the entire crew would be meeting them. The door to Captain Brigs' office swooshes open and Vice-Captain Orga walks in. “The crew isn't happy about this, Captain."

“I didn't think they'd be. The ISG wants us to do this so…"

“This might cause trouble, Captain. How long do you think he'll last before he requests a transfer?"

“I don't know, but I'm sure you and I can boost morale and keep the worse from happening to him." The Captain tries to inject humour into his words but it only half works.

“I'll think of something." Orga sighs before leaving the office.

“He's definitely in for a tough time." Captain Brigs murmurs to himself as he waits for his wrist device to buzz and give him the order to welcome this xenobiologist to the ship.

“Hello! I'm Captain Brigs, Captain of The Horizon." The black and gold uniformed human man says extending a hand in greeting.

“Hi, I'm Tal. The ISG sent me to test out an idea of theirs. I know it doesn't look it but I'm a Qaercuil. It's nice to meet you." Tal says before grasping Captain Brigs' hand and shaking it. He'd chosen to take on the form of a human for his first introduction to the ship, thankfully making the right choice as its Captain is human.

“Oh! A shapeshifter. That would be useful to study different species."

“Yeah." Tal agrees with a smile. Captain Brigs has Tal follow him into the ship, down an elevator to the 7th floor, and along the corridor to a room with a plaque saying 'Xenobiology Lab' near its door. The door swooshes open and reveals a white room with long rows of cabinets to the left of the room, a strange sort of table with wires dangling from the roof also to the left side of the room, chairs, a large fabricator built into the back wall, a lot of empty space on the right side of the room, and a door on the back wall as well.

“This is your lab, the guys in engineering really went all out with this place; it's got plenty of space, a fabricator for your every need, this door leads to your office and pens where you'll be able to keep any of your more feral specimens," Captain Brigs says as he shows Tal around the lab. “And this area," he says motioning to the large open space to the right of the room, “is equipped to simulate any environment you need. It's pretty advanced and I'm not even going to pretend I know how the hell it works but it's one hell of a marvel. Do you have any questions about the lab? Anything I can't answer can probably be answered by someone in engineering so I can call someone up if need be."

“No, no. I've got no questions, you've explained it very well." Captain Brigs smiles at this and leads Tal out of the lab.

“This ship is just like any other ship," Captain Brigs starts to explain as they walk. “It may seem empty now but that's because everyone's returning from the station or waiting for me to bring you to the canteen where I'll introduce you to the crew. Everything is pretty well signposted and your wrist device can show you the way to anywhere on the ship so don't worry about getting lost. The crew are generally quite nice but your….unique job and position on this ship seems to have gotten a few people angry so sorry about that, if anything happens report it to me or Vice-Captain Orga and we'll sort it."

“Sorry for the trouble, Captain." Tal apologises as they board the elevator and head to the 2nd floor.

“No need to apologise, Tal." The elevator doors open and they both walk down another corridor, this one lined by doors with nameplates and numbers by them. “You're in this one, room 745. I've been told it's been designed with the Qaercuil lifestyle in mind, whatever that means."

“You've been very nice to me, Captain. Thank you."

“You're part of the crew now, Tal, as Captain it's my job to welcome you to the ship and make sure you're happy here. Talk to Vice-Captain Orga if you need anything in general or have questions, I'm usually in my office but talk to Orga first. I best leave you to settle in, I'll come and get you in about an hour so we can go to the canteen and let everyone know who you are. See you." Captain Brigs waves goodbye and walks away down the corridor.

Tal walks up to the door and it opens for him, stepping inside he can see it's got a bed in the middle of the room, a door that he thinks must lead to the bathroom on the far wall, and a desk, all pretty standard but there's a small keypad and screen on the inner left side of the door that catches his attention. 'Can't hurt to click a few buttons.' Tal thinks before tapping a random button. The screen flashes to life.

“Hello, Tal. Welcome aboard. I am Sticks, your AI companion while you are here. I will be available via your wrist device, which is currently on your bed along with your uniform, as well as here in your quarters, and in the lab. My job is to aid you in any way I can."

“Hello, Sticks. Um….does everyone get an AI companion on this ship?" Tal asks, a little surprised at the lengths people have gone to for him.

“No. I have been issued to you because you are a Qaercuil and so it was felt that instead of having a basic computer, it would be better to give you an AI. It is known that Qaercuil change their preferences quite often and so this room, and everything in it, is equipped to change however you see fit. My original purpose was just this, but Captain Brigs specially asked if I could become your AI companion and so that is what I am now." 'This entire room can change just because I'm a Qaercuil? Captain Brigs has gone too far, hopefully I can make it up to him somehow.' Tal thinks after hearing all this as he moves over to his bed, puts his bag of possessions on it, and begins getting dressed into his uniform. Like Captain Brigs's uniform, Tal's is mainly black but instead of gold, his has seafoam green accents. 'I guess that's so everyone knows my role.' Once he's dressed, Tal puts on his wrist device, a sort of watch, and walks back to the screen.

“So why the keypad?" He questions.

“To change your room, all you need to do is select that item from the list below," a list of items appears on the screen above the keypad, “and type in what you want. I will display a picture of what it will look like and you can change it to be how you like. You can also set presets and simply click on your desired preset on the screen or ask me and I will change the room to how you have asked. Once you are happy with your selections all you need to do is click 'add new preset' and give it a name. From then on you can use that preset."

“That's so cool!" Tal practically shouts before thinking the idea further through. “Hey, Sticks," Tal starts, all the energy in his voice having gone.

“Yes?"

“That's all very nice but I don't want to embarrass myself in front of you so we won't be doing any of that."

“Tal, I am aware of your role on this ship and what it entails, I am also fully aware of everything currently known about your species, and I am unable to think less of you because of what you choose to do, so you do not need to worry about embarrassing yourself in front of me." A squeak from Tal's right grabs his attention and he turns his head to see a chew toy like the ones earth canines have on the floor about two metres away. “I have read your file, Tal." A shiver runs down the entirety of Tal's body from head to toe at these words. “I know what you want to do; do not worry about damaging your uniform or wrist device, they are both made of smart nanites so are able to change to an appropriate form as you shapeshift." Tal looks at the chew toy, more than a part of him wanting to go over to it and start chewing on it. Tal had been messing about one night at a party at university with some of his friends when he'd been dared to transform into an earth canine and chew on a chew toy. He'd done it and everyone had thought it was very very funny but Tal discovered in that moment that he loved it; after that it had been a secret pleasure of his, he'd even brought a chew toy with him today in his bag of possessions to move onto The Horizon. “I will not think less of you, this is a stress-relieving method you have developed for yourself, nothing more."

Tal gives in and transforms into his preferred canine form, an Accain, a medium-sized canine with red scales instead of fur covering its body. His wrist device shrinks to fit on his right foreleg and his uniform becomes a black and seafoam green collar around his neck. His four scaled paws beat against the floor as he dashes the short distance to the chew toy. Gripping it in his muzzle before lying down on his side and chewing on it and playing with it. Tal's worries slowly disappear as Sticks says nothing and contentment fills him as he plays with the chew toy, the natural heat of an Accain causing the toy to start burning slightly. The room around Tal changes to become an Accain's preferred environment: a humid and warm volcanic environment like the Accain home planet, which only makes things better for Tal as he happily chews away.

“Tal, I must inform you that you have 32 minutes until you are due to go to the canteen. If there are more things you need to do to get ready then I advise you stop what you are doing and see to them." Sticks chimes in after some time. Tal can't tell how long he's been chewing on the chew toy for, he's been too preoccupied to keep track. He wants to check out the rest of his room so drops the chew toy and stands up, shaking his whole body out and stretching a little. “Good boy."

“I hate you…" Tal sighs at Sticks as he pads over to where his bed was before the room changed. Where his bed once was is now a flat orange glowing rupture in the ground.

“As you can see, your bed has become suitable for an Accain to sleep on. The warmth offered by magma-heated igneous rock is perfect for Accains to sleep on, as you no doubt know." Tal steps onto the rupture and a pleasant warmth radiates through his paws, the pleasant heat hot enough to instantly vaporise water or kill or severely burn anyone who isn't an Accain or similarly immune to such heat. 'I'm starting to think I'm going to like it on this ship.' Tal steps off his bed and makes his way over to the door in the wall and it slides open for him revealing a large-ish room with a waterfall of flowing lava in the left corner of the room, a pool of lava in the floor big enough for Tal to bathe in like a bath to the left of the room closer to the door, a sheet of shiny obsidian is low enough down the right wall for Tal to see his reflection in, and there is a grey-barked and leafless tree in the right corner of the room with a hole nearby. “This is your bathroom, it has a shower, a bath, and a toilet, as well as a mirror. Feel free to use these facilities in any form you like whenever you feel the need." A twinge in Tal's bladder makes him wince at what he's about to do. He pads his way towards the tree but stops as he reaches it.

“Wait, you're not going to tell any of the crew about what I'm about to do, right?" Tal asks.

“Why would I tell them about you seeing to a natural bodily function?"

“You promise?"

“If it makes you more comfortable, I promise." Sticks tells Tal. The twinge in his bladder happens again, 'I really shouldn't have had that drink, would have saved me embarrassment.' Tal lifts his leg and relaxes. A bright orange stream launches from Tal's red-scaled sheath, hitting the tree and making it smoke as he relieves himself onto it. Tal sighs a little as he pees, his stream tapering to an end eventually and he lowers his leg after shaking himself a little. “You have 20 minutes until you are required to be in the canteen, Tal. I suggest you change into whichever form you feel is best to greet the rest of the crew with." Sticks reports as Tal leaves the bathroom, his scaled tail wagging slightly.

“Thanks for the reminder, could you change the room back to the way it was?" The room shifts back to the plain white from before and Tal feels cold as the stifling heat of the Accain room lowers to room temperature. Accains can live in normal climates but it's slightly uncomfortable and anything lower than 5 degrees Celsius is near fatal for them. Tal sits on his haunches and thinks for a second before beginning to change back to human. His red scales disappear and are replaced with peach skin, his scaly red tail shrinks and becomes non-existent and soon Tal looks like a 6' 6" ginger-haired human man dressed in his uniform.

“Is that the form you shall be greeting the crew with?" Sticks asks as Tal goes back into the bathroom and makes sure he looks presentable in the glass mirror.

“Yep, I'm guessing most of the crew are human or at least humanoid so this is probably the best way for me not to stand out too much." Tal tells the computer.

“A good choice."

Soon it's time for Tal to go to the canteen and there's a knock on the door to his room. Tal opens the door and sees Captain Brigs standing in front of him.

“Tal! You don't look any different." Captain Brigs says with a slight bit of underwhelmedness in his voice.

“Did you want me to look like something in particular, Captain?" Tal asks, aware of the Captain's disappointment. “I can change now if you want."

“No, no. It's fine Tal, I just thought you might want to change into a form that makes you feel comfortable. That's all." Captain Brigs says with a shrug as he leads Tal down the corridor.

“I see, Captain. I'm fine with looking like a human though, it's also the best bet if I want to make a good first impression with the crew since they're angry about me being here and all." Tal explains as they board the elevator.

“Do you have any favourite forms, Tal? I've been told Qaercuil have favourite forms they usually take on so I thought I'd ask, sorry if I'm being rude." Captain Brigs says as they both wait in the elevator.

“It's fine, Captain. I like being an Accain and-“ The doors open and Tal stops talking as he sees everyone in the canteen.

“A big scaly lava dog probably wouldn't have been the best for an introduction, you're right. I'll make sure everyone knows it's you if they see an Accain roaming the ship.“ Captain Brigs whispers to Tal as they both walk out of the elevator and he leads Tal to the small raised stage in front of where all the crew are sitting. “Hello everyone," Captain Brigs says after picking up the microphone. “as you may know we are taking on a new crewmember. This is Tal," Captain Brigs motions towards Tal who can't seem to look at the crew and instead chooses to focus on the ground. “He's a Qaercuil so he won't always look like that but he's a nice person so be nice to him." The Captain leans over to Tal and whispers to him. “It's time for you to introduce yourself." With that he hands him the microphone and steps off the stage, sitting in the front row in the only unoccupied chair.

“H-hello, I'm Tal. The ISG has sent me to be your xenobiologist. They said they've already sent a message to brief you all on what I'm doing on this ship, so pop down to the lab and I'll be happy to see you. Um….does anyone have any questions?" A hand raises. “Yes?"

“When are you available at the lab?" Tal watches as the crewmember gets several unfriendly looks.

“Any time between 7:00 in the morning and 11:00 at night. If I'm not there, call me and I'll be there soon. Are there any other questions?"

“Could you tell us about any hobbies you have?" Captain Brigs asks.

“I like reading, listening to music, and learning about different species' lives, not very cool hobbies, I know, but…."

“And you're available to consult anyone on your field of study? Both your chosen specialisation and general xenobiology, Tal?" A Hoda woman asks from beside the Captain. “Vice-Captain Orga, nice to meet you, Tal." She says warmly.

“Uh, well, that's right. I'm here to help answer any curious questions or things you have about different species, as well as more personal questions." Tal answers. The majority of faces in the crowd don't seem happy at all so Tal continues. “I know you all might think of me one way, I'm used to that by now, but please give me a chance to show you otherwise. It's true my chosen specialisation is a unique one but that's why it's needed. I'm not replacing anyone and I'll try to stay out of everyone's way so….I don't know….."

“Well said, Tal!" Captain Brigs says with a haughty round of applause which Orga joins, followed by a few more of the crew. “I look forward to your time with us!" He stands up and beckons Tal to sit in his seat before getting back on the stage. “Well, if you have any other questions Tal will probably be in his lab until the end of the day so go and ask him. The ISG has placed him here to help with a problem they say they have found so don't be afraid to visit his lab when you want to. To show you he's not some strange creature of depravity, I will be visiting his lab for a talk with him this afternoon." This gets a few silent gasps from the crew and an audible one from Tal. 'The Captain coming to visit me!? This afternoon!?' He thinks from his seat as the Captain keeps talking. “You're all free to go now, but make sure we all try to make Tal feel part of this crew." Everyone shuffles off to their usual work.

“You should probably head to your lab and get familiar with your equipment and stuff." Vice-Captain Orga suggests from beside Tal as she gets up. “Once again, lovely to meet you, Tal." She says before leaving. Tal gets up from his seat and walks through the corridor back to the elevator and rides it up to floor 7, most of the crew he passes on his way giving him disgusted side-glances as he passes or as he stands in the elevator with them. He steps out and walks to his lab. The door swooshes open and closes behind him as he enters.

“You seem stressed, Tal. What is it?" Sticks asks.

“I don't think the crew like me. They're all so angry at me for no reason and I get the feeling I'm not going to have a fun first few months."

“Not all of them are like that, plus many of the crew see your profession one way so it will take time to educate them to what you actually do."

“Yeah, you're right. Still my 'profession' is pretty weird, right?" Tal asks jokily as he moves around the lab.

“I can see how it could be thought of that way, yes." Sticks responds. “This lab is equipped with everything you need to study different species and that of their sexual nature and anatomy. You, as a Qaercuil, are able to experience everything from that species' perspective so we do not need to worry about getting a test subject for the most part. I am here to aid in your study and your role to the crew in any way I can as well."

“And this strange table is….?" Tal asks as he looks at the table with the wires dangling from the roof.

“That is your examination table, it can be used to examine patients, and yourself in different forms, and also can be used to collect samples of their or your sexual fluids if needed."

“You really don't mince words about this stuff do you." Tal says with a chuckle as he looks at a few of the wires and one bulges out and forms a lengthy clear bell at the end.

“It is not in my nature to mince words."

“I assume this goes over a male's equipment?"

“You are correct. There is little research on Accain biology and an even smaller amount on their sexual biology, in case you were wondering, Tal."

“What are you suggesting, Sticks?" Tal asks with a knowing smile. 'I guess I can stop worrying a little and start my job here.'

“Nothing, just informing you that studies on Accain sexual biology fall under your area of research and your research on this topic could provide useful information."

“I thought you said mincing words wasn't in your nature…"

“I never said I could not." Sticks tells Tal.

“If you lock the door then I suppose a bit of research on a male Accain's sexual fluids couldn't hurt…"

“My thoughts exactly. Shall I make the room suitable for an Accain?" Tal nods and quickly changes into a male Accain, the lab becoming pleasingly hot as Tal paces around the room a little. “If you step onto the examination table I can aid in the extraction of a sample."

“That's a really longwinded way of saying you're going to help me get off." Tal says but steps onto the lowered examination table anyway. The table becomes a square large enough for Tal to be able to walk two steps in any direction before coming to its edge. A wire snakes down towards Tal's red sheath but he moves away. “Ah ah, I'm- uh, I'm going to need something to uh…. To mount first." Almost as soon as Tal has finished stuttering this out, a sort of breeding mount forms in front of Tal and the wire that was moving towards his sheath moves into a hole in the back of it.

“Will this suffice?" Sticks asks.

“Yep." Tal growls and quickly mounts the breeding mount, letting out a bark as the wire touches the end of his sheath and starts pushing it back. Tal's hips begin humping into the hole of the mount as the wire massages over his emerging length. The wire opens and slides over Tal's penis all the way to the knot, embracing it in tightness that drives him wild. Tal bites into the mount and it begins to get burned where his forelimbs grip onto it as well as around his muzzle and wherever else his body touches it for more than a few seconds at a time. Deep growls sound from Tal's throat as he pounds into the breeding mount. A few more feverish thrusts and Tal howls as his growing knot slips through the hole in the mount and is unable to be pulled back out, divine pressure envelopes Tal's sensitive knot and he completely loses it. His balls quiver as he launches his hot load into the mount and the collection tube covering his penis. Tal pants and watches as bright orange fluid moves from the tube, out of the mount, and away to be stored for analysis, the last thing on the Qaercuil's mind at the moment. Tal licks the mount as he keeps unloading himself into it, giving into his Accain instincts. 30 minutes of pleasure later, Tal's knot has shrunk enough to be pulled out of the mount with some effort. He tugs at it and it pops free, making him whimper with stimulation.

“We have successfully managed to collect 80mL of Accain semen. Well done." Tal slowly moves off the examination table and Sticks begins cleaning it.

“Don't…..I know……it." Tal pants with his glowing orange tongue hanging out of his muzzle while his penis returns to its sheath.

“You reached 958°C during the collection, even more useful data."

“That's pretty hot, is everything okay?"

“Yes, you burned the mount but that is easily fixed and I shall make sure later experiments with Accains are equipped with extreme-heat-proof materials. The licking you did after copulation is also new information that will need to be analysed. By their nature, Accains are hard to secure and use as test subjects so your recent actions will provide us with a lot of data to go through for the coming days."

“I'm glad to be of service," Tal says with a mocking bow. “If it's all the same to you though, I'm quite tired so could you simulate a nice bed and safe cave around said bed so I can go to sleep? We'll go through the data later."

“Of course, Tal." The right side of the room changes to a nice-looking cave with a warm orange glow and even warmer heat coming from inside it.

“Thanks." Tal pads towards the cave and his Accain instincts tell him that it's the right sort of cave for him to sleep in so he can rest and remain safe at the same time. He moves into the cave and spots a warm patch of ground in the cave's centre, quickly moving over to it and curling up to sleep. The warmth feels nice on his red scales and Tal's eyes feel heavy. His recent exercise seems to have tired him out quite a bit so he just lays there surrounded by comforting warmth and drifts off to sleep.
