This story jumps ahead in the Long Division timeline to a story from my book Tracy: Family Affairs. Lucy, a German Shepherd, had a long-time crush on her best friend and coworker, Tracy, even though she knew that he was gay. She finally got her wish and took him to bed for one night. That union produced a daughter, Jessica, who is the focus of this story.

April 1993

David stepped through the back door of the small house that he and Jessica were renting. He could hear his lovely wife out in the living room, playing her guitar and singing. He set his flight bag quietly on the floor and stepped into the doorway. Jessie was facing him but her eyes were closed, lost in the song she was performing.

_ And the next thing I know

That coyote's at my door

He pins me in a corner and he won't take “no!"

He drags me out on the dance floor

And we're dancing close and slow

Now he's got a woman at home

He's got another woman down the hall

He seems to want me anyway_

At that moment, Jessie opened her eyes as her nose alerted her to the familiar scent of her spouse. She gave David a warm smile, but finished the verse before setting the guitar down and rising to give her handsome German Shepherd a welcome home kiss.

“You didn't have to stop playing," David said after the young couple finished brushing their muzzles together. “I've never heard that song before. What's it called?"

“It's Coyote, by Joni Mitchell," Jessie said. “It's been a long-time favorite of my mom's. I never knew why until she told me about my dad. I have to re-tune my guitar for that one, so I don't play it too often. It's tough to pick out the melody too."

“The lyrics are intriguing," said David. “Do you know if Joni ever had a relationship with a real coyote?"

“I'm not sure if it's true," said Jessie, “but according to Mom, the song is about a fling she had with Sam Shepard."

“The actor who was in The Right Stuff?"

“I've never actually seen that movie," said Jessica, “but yeah, I think that's him."

“I'm pretty sure your dad has that film in his videotape collection," David said. “We should borrow it from him sometime." He gestured toward Jessica's instrument, “At any rate, I'd love to hear the song from the beginning, seeing as your guitar is already tuned properly."

“I'll play it for you," said the young female, “if you'll do something for me."

“Oh? What can I do for my lovely lady?"

Jessie gave a playful tug on David's tie. “Take this off first," she said with a smile.

“It's a deal," David agreed, reaching out to tug at the collar of his wife's blouse in return, “if you'll take this off."

“If I'm going topless, you are too, Mister!" Jessica protested.

“You're a tough negotiator," said David as he divested himself of his tie, followed by his shirt.

The female turned her back as she unbuttoned her blouse and let it fall to the floor. She picked up her guitar and held it shyly in front of herself before turning around to face her husband once more.

David's eyes shone with love and admiration for his spouse. “Dog, Jess! You look gorgeous!"

Jessie felt herself blushing under the ebony of her facial fur. “Flattery will get you everywhere," she declared as she lowered herself onto the armless Victorian chair that she preferred to use when playing. She positioned the guitar on her thigh, allowing her petite breasts to show. With an audible “woof" David sat on the couch opposite his wife. He leaned forward to watch with keen interest as she strummed the first chords.

This time Jessica sang through the complete song. It didn't take long for her to become lost in the music once again. The strings of the Ovation responded to her touch and Jessie's eyes closed as the lyrics poured from her lips, high and sweet. David watched and listened, captivated by the beauty of both his wife and the music.

When the last notes faded from the instrument, Jessie opened her eyes again. “I've never played topless before," she smiled.

“You've never sounded better," said David. “I think you should play like that more often."

“You just like looking at my little nubs," Jessica asserted.

“Hrrr, guilty as charged," admitted David, “but you are the most beautiful G-Shep I've ever seen."

“And you are the most handsome," countered the female. She gently placed the Balladeer in its case and latched the top shut. Then she stood and walked over to where her husband remained seated. Jessica leaned over, bringing her breasts close to his muzzle and her own mouth close to his ear. “Since we're both half undressed, why don't we go upstairs and try a little duet?" she suggested.

David gulped and let his wife take him by the paw. The couple quickly mounted the stairs leading to their bedroom. There's an old cliché about making beautiful music together and in this instance, it is entirely fitting.
