Family: distantly related to Scottish nobility through a “spare son” of the Laird of Fife (eurasian otter) who moved to America on a remitance in the middle nineteenth century, built a plantation in Missouri, married a Cree woman (north american river otter) who had been taken as a slave in Manitoba, had several children (metis, hybrid otters) including boys Cole, Jim, John and Bob, was murdered by a secessionist because he favoured the union, the four brothers joined the confederate army where they met Frank and Jesse James, later formed the James-Younger Gang, were caught by the law but freed by the rest of the gang and fled north to Manitoba to hide with their mother’s family, married into the tribe (the Otter Clan didn’t care that they were metis although other clans were dubious), later generations remained in Treaty 5 territory, Lakes District

History: Tap grew up hearing about the exploits of her father’s side of the family in the Missouri Bushwhackers and the James-Younger Gang. By her generation, the Younger’s eurasian otter genes were so thin that you can only tell she isn’t pureblood Cree with special training and a pair of calipers. Her family avoided the “Sixties Scoop” mostly by luck. She got her education largely by remote learning. She was an avid student anyway; her mother used to joke that she “ate homework for breakfast.” (It tasted like walleye to her.)

Tap was never comfortable in her own male skin. She thought of her penis as something that had been stuck on her at birth. She used to dress in her older sister’s clothes and gained a reputation as two-spirited. It wasn’t until she joined The Korps and first put on RCGs that she realized that she was trans. Her family accepted her gift of energy transformation as just part of being her. They asked her to start fires for them and later cars. Tap was just happy that she could help her community.

At seventeen, after graduating high school, she couldn’t afford higher education, so she moved east to Thunder Bay, Ontario to learn scuba diving and apprentice at underwater welding, (a profitable but dangerous trade.) One day she was assisting at a vehicle recovery operation with her master and some OPP divers. Only the police divers knew that the vehicle belonged to The Korps. A Korps team swam in unexpectedly (Of course!), their mission being to take back the vehicle or destroy it. Tap was caught in the crossfire and a villain rescued her. Before they released her, she had a chat with them. The Korps sounded a lot like her great, great grandfather’s gang, which she had romanticised as a pup. It sounded like fun, so she joined!

Notes:

Tap refuses to ever use deadly force. Luckily, Team Blindguard is seldom sent on missions that might require it.

Tap can absorb, channel, redirect and transform energy; electric, heat, light and (with effort) kinetic and other potential energies. She has not explored her ability to tap every kind of energy, although she knows she cannot affect gravity.

Tap has a particularly scary villain laugh. She regularly wins evil laughter contests.

** Tap works at exhibiting the best of female and male shapes in her figure. In her spare time, she works at getting up the courage to transition to female once and for all. She finally goes to Empire Enhancements and has the full transition surgery in “Changes.” After that she is fully female. (She can make pups, but doesn’t intend to right away; she uses birth control with other mustelids, consulting ROSE whether it’s necessary.)

*** Tap’s otter fur keeps her very warm even in winter. In very cold weather she will add her favourite hot pink hoodie. When it’s raining or snowing, she adds a yellow or clear raincoat, unless she can get away with going naked. If she can, she packs a towel in a plastic bag in her purse. (Yes, she does wriggle adorably when she towels-off.) Her costume is as water-resistant as her fur.
