Writing Prompt #5 - "Transmission One-One-Two-Five"
This week's prompt: "Write a dialogue between two or more characters, and include only their dialogue, with no supporting descriptions or non-verbal text, as if this were a transcript of a recorded conversation. The scenario can be any genre or scenario, but it should be about furry characters or situations. Focus on clear characterization and making it clear who is talking at any given time."
I don't have much to say about this except that it may be the worst thing I've ever written, but I did write it with all affection! Also I did keep it to the 350-word limit this week!
“Foxtrot Tango Three, this is Mission Control. Do you copy?"
“Affirmative, Mission Control."
“What's your position?"
“Point-zero-niner, four-five. Approaching target at 900 knots. Visual in T-minus thirty seconds."
“Remember, your objective is to perform reconnaissance only. Do not engage the target – I repeat, do not engage the target. Confirm."
“Copy, I'll keep my distance… but, sir?"
“Yes, Pilot."
“What exactly are we looking at here? They told me almost nothing when they briefed me.”
“You know what we know, Pilot. Reports out of New York City are conflicting and unclear – hence the need for further intelligence."
“But, sir… a monster?"
“Eyes forward, Pilot. Do you have visual?"
“Apologies. Cityscape in sight. Stand by for visual of target."
“…"
“What do you see, Pilot?"
“…"
“Foxtrot Tango Three, do you copy?"
“…"
“Foxtrot Tango Three, I repeat, do you copy? Come in if you read me."
“… I-I copy, sir."
“Do you have visual on the target?"
“I… see the target, yeah."
“Describe."
“W-well…"
“Out with it, Pilot! That's an order. I will not ask again."
“The target is currently in Midtown Manhattan. Appears to be at least 1,000 feet tall and mobile. Damage to city infrastructure may be limited to a small area but it appears to be catastrophic. The smoke is making it tough to see further details. Am I clear to approach?"
“Affirmative, Pilot, but keep your distance. Target's capabilities are unknown."
“Copy that, moving in closer."
“…"
“Foxtrot Tango Three, do you have visual?"
“C-confirmed, I have visual."
“… God damnit, Pilot, what do you see?"
“Sir, damage appears to be localized between 32nd and 36th Streets and 5th and 7th avenues. Most of the buildings are completely leveled. The casualties have to be in the thousands, I have no idea. I-it's a mess, sir."
“And the target?"
“The target is, well, avian and bipedal in appearance. Average in build, blue plumage… and completely nude."
“Still active?"
“Uh… very active, sir."
“What does that mean, exactly?"
“Well… he appears to be fucking the Empire State Building, sir."
