The pilot for my continuous story of Anzu, the Golden Talon. Having only recently arrived in the city, Anzu must begin to strike fear into the hearts of the criminal element that has been preying on the Avian District for years. This is the first episode of a series that will be regularly updated going forward.

"In other news, the strange gargoyle-like creature that has appeared over the city these past two weeks appeared again late last night. Police say that at around four in the morning, the sound of gunfire broke the silence of the night and several witnesses say that the creature descended down on a local gang that has been terrorizing the area."

The news echoed over the small radio as Anzu pushed her glasses back over her beak and against her golden eyes. The Harpy Eagle gave a groan as she toned out the radio to focus on the large pile of books resting on her counter. The white and grey feathered avian gave a long yawn from her beak as she lifted one of the books up and ran it over the scanner on her register, then she tapped several buttons on the screen of the computer in front of her and slid the book off into a large cardboard box she had resting by her feet.

"You'd think Anzu, that the person would just drive or walk to the bookstore and actually look around instead of tapping their fingers, claws, whatever, on their mobile device. But no, they have to make me deliver their things!" Stella spoke from behind a shelf filled to the brim with various books, though all Anzu could see was a slight glimpse of a crocodilian tail that peeked out from time to time.

"Well, if you'd stop setting them at my register then I wouldn't have to scan them for you to deliver in the first place." Anzu answered back as she repeated the action of scanning the books and placing them in the box one by one.

"What!? And let you miss out on all the scanning! Nonsense!" The crocodile replied back with a slight chuckle as she continued to bring over piles upon piles of books.

Stella was a muscular crocodile, the perfect woman to deliver a heavy load as she gave a toothy grin to Anzu and nodded to the bird "Last few here, luv."

"I'm not your luv, Stella." Anzu replied in a tired tone as she lifted another book up and zapped it with a hand-scanner and rested it down in the box and huffed to herself. She long desired the need to caffeinate and push out the tiredness that fogged her brain. But Anzu had already arrived late to her day job twice this week and had figured it was better to just endure instead of making any unneeded stops.

"Heh! You're not my luv yet, you mean! My offer is still on the table if you ever wanna spread those cute bird thi-"

DING!

The door abruptly opened and a third woman entered the fairly small bookstore, carrying an armful of small cardboard boxes that she quickly moved past both workers and into into a backroom. The only glimpse the two women got of their boss was a red leather jacket and jeans, and a simple brown and black furred tail that swished idly. The door slammed shut with a loud thud and both Anzu and Stella looked at each other in confusion as the radio continued to blare on about whatever news story that both women had equally little or no interest at all in Anzu's case.

"Right... She must be in a bad mood today." Stella replied.

"Nessa is always in a bad mood." Anzu replied back, as she simply went back to scanning books so the crocodile could deliver them to the customer that had purchased the order. The two worked in relative silence as a half hour passed in relative peace as few others entered the bookstore and Anzu worked almost nonstop to make sure each book ended up on the box.

Once the order had finished, Stella went around the counter and squeezed past the eager and grabbed a tape gun off of the counter and skillfully taped the flaps of the box shut and she gave a nod "Alright luv! That does it!"

That was when the backroom door opened again and a gazelle female stepped out of the room and huffed, she pushed a few black strands of hair out of her face as she glanced at the two and gave a sigh "Anzu, your late once again. Stella, why hasn't that order been shipped out? It should have gone out an hour ago!"

"Sorry Nessa! It was a big order to fill." The crocodile replied back.

"I don't care! The store needs this sale to go over well!" The gazelle snapped back in anger as she marched toward the counter and placed her hands down on the table and gave Anzu a glare.

"What's your excuse this time bird-brain!? Feathers get caught in the door again? Or maybe your taxi caught fire!?"

"Ahh... No ma'am! Just stayed up a bit to late watching... Ah... Stella's match!" Anzu replied as she put her hands up in defense.

"What?" Stella replied with a frown, tilting her head at the bird in confusion. Outside of the bookstore business, Stella was a kick-boxer and had gotten enough wins that her fights had begun to appear on television. However, though Stella had tried to get Anzu to watch her fights before. The bird had always shot down the offer of seeing her friend compete.

This however didn't seem to impress Nessa any, as the gazelle simply crossed her arms over her chest and shook her head "I wonder why I bothered hiring you! Always late, always an excuse!"

"I'll make it up to you Nessa, I promise!" Anzu replied back, now worried that she might lose her job.

"You will! Your going to sweep the entire store, stock the books, and the giftcards, and keep out of my way! I don't want to hear a peep from your beak for the next eight hours!"

"Yes ma'am." The defeated bird replied back, giving a sigh of her own as her boss gave a snort in return and moved off to go about her own business for the day.

Anzu once more pushed her glasses up over her beak and against her eyes as she moved to get back to work, stepping out from behind the counter. As she moved to set about stocking, a dark green scaled hand rested on her shoulder as she blinked in surprise and paused. Stella moved around the bird and gave her a tilt of her head "You don't watch my fights luv."

"Well... She wouldn't have believed the truth either."

"Oh?"

"Martin asked me on a date last night and well... It uhh..." Anzu paused and gave a slight blush through her feathers at the crocodile. Then she smiled and turned away from her and went about shifting some books around on the closest shelve. The bird gave a slight giggle as she thought back to the previous night and how it had all gone about.

"Whoa! You got railed by the stallion didn't you!?" Stella abruptly blurted out, pointing a finger at the eagle with a grin.

Anzu just gave a slight smile back and shrugged her shoulders, the bird shifted another book back to it's proper place and simply chose not to reply as she worked and continued to blush. The crocodile crossed her arms over her chest and gave a slight laugh as she realized the bird didn't even need to answer the question as she simply turned to retrieve the box that had to be delivered. Stella lifted the box up and gave a nod to the avian "Well I'm glad you two finally hit it off! Now I just need to find me a good girl to sort me out."

Both Anzu and Stella laughed as the crocodile carried the box to the door and she shoved it open with her shoulder, another ding sounded as the doorbell echoed through the store and the scaled kick-boxer was out into the wilds of Krimson City.

The bed creaked loud, and trembled as Anzu gripped the sheets. Her beak was a gap as sounds of passion escaped her throat in a series of almost automatic moans as she glanced over her shoulder at the black stallion who was in the middle of thrusting himself eagerly into her. Martin bit his lip as he ran a hand over her rump and past her tail feathers as the horse's hips repeatedly met her backside. Both horse and eagle had been looking forward to their days ending, and now that night had overtaken the city and both work shifts had ended they were able to enjoy each other as they had the previous night. Clothing had quickly been discarded to the floor, Anzu's bra was still on the bed even as the stallion grunted with both effort and joy.

"Mmm...! Fuck! I've wanted this all day!" Martin replied between grunts as Anzu's folds swallowed his cock again and again, his expression of bliss quite obvious on his face as the eagle moaned in reply. Her back arched as his fingers gripped a bit of white and gray feathers as he leaned down and kissed along her spine, his hips continuing to move as he instinctively climbed over her just a bit so he could impale the eagle ever so deeper.

His arms slid back a bit and wrapped around her form as he started to move his hips faster now, inciting more pleasured moans from Anzu's beak "Ohh! F-fuck! You feel so good!”

The horse gave a grin and as his hands slid up and cupped her bouncing feathery breasts, fondling and squeezing them as his hips continued to move in an almost automatic and eager way. He could already feel himself throbbing within the eagle, ready to burst at any moment. Anzu’s talons gripped the sheets ever tighter, her eyes closed in wonderful bliss as each thrust from Martin’s hips pushed her closer to her own release.

“Ohh yes! Martin! Ohh Martin!”

“Fuck! I’m going to cum!” The horse moaned out.

He gave her a series of hard and fast thrusts that echoed loud around the room, then with a deep grunt he pressed deep and Anzu arched sharply, a cry escaping her beak as her folds tightened around his length and her nectar mixed with the horse seed that flooded her womb.

The two panted hard, and Martin slowly laid down against her back as he tried to catch his breath. Anzu slowly let go of her sheets as her panting turned to a slight giggle. “Damn… You really did have a bad day.”

The stallion chuckled softly. “Heh… Sorry if I got a bit too rough.”

“Quite alright, I can take it. Plus it’s nice to just feel my brain being fucked out.” The avian replied in a cheeky tone.

Martin kissed along her shoulder, then with a sigh he pulled himself out of her and shifted onto his side. Anzu rolled over and snuggled herself up with him as she looked deeply into his eyes.

“So, does Marry know?” She asked softly.

The stallion just sighed and glanced away. “That I’m fucking the new bird in town, rather then her. Oh I imagine she suspects.”

“Sorry I’ve ruined your marriage.”

“Nah, you didn’t ruin it. It has been soured for a while now. We both just don’t love each other like we used to.” He replied back, giving her a soft smile.

Anzu touched his cheek softly and leaned her beak close, the two exchanged a series of soft tender kisses. Martin had taken a liking to Anzu shortly after she had moved into the building, and the two had started with simple greetings. Then the stallion had called her for drinks the night before, Anzu had accepted and before they knew it, the stallion had made his move. He’d pinned Anzu against a wall in the alleyway outside of the apartment building and they had made love right then and there. After Martin had explained more of his disgruntled marriage that had begun to fall apart before she arrived in the city. Still Anzu felt a bit guilty, having fallen for him so easily when she knew he was going through such turmoil in his life.

Weather Martin saw her as a simple bootycall to take his frustrations out on, or something more Anzu didn’t know. But she was welcome to see where the road for them led, if it was just good sex then she could accept that. Especially since her rent was practically free at the moment. After a few moments of silence he gave a sigh, then untangled himself from the harpy eagle and sat up. Anzu looked at him and watched as he stood up and gathered up his clothes.

“I should get back to Marry, I imagine your ready to get to sleep. Especially after all that.” He said.

“Heh, I could go another round if you wanted.” She sat up and stretched her arms over her head.

The stallion chuckled as he slipped his boxers back on, then his jeans, and the plaid shirt he brought. Anzu personally preferred him naked and buried deep into her, she stood up and grabbed her bra and moved to the bathroom. She flipped the light on and gave a sigh. “Well, get going then. We’ll talk about it more tomorrow. Have a good night!”

“Goodnight Anzu… and thank you.” She heard him say, a few moments later she heard the door of her apartment open and close signaling that the stallion had left.

She tilted her head and listened for any sounds before she abruptly turned back around and grabbed a rag from her closet.

Anzu cleaned up a bit, turning on the shower water and climbing in for a few minutes to get rid of the musk of horse seed on her feathers. Once she had done that she quickly went back to her bed and dropped onto all fours on the floor and reached underneath and pulled forth a large suitcase. The harpy eagle tossed the suitcase up onto her bed and stood up, her hand rested over the silver hinges and she closed her eyes for a moment.

“Mother… I hope you can see me from wherever you are. My hunt resumes.”

She opened her eyes and flicked the suitcase open and peered within…

“Ronald, I really don’t think this is a good idea. The cops are on high alert tonight with that winged freak being spotted all over the Avian District.” Marcus said with worry as he gripped the pistol in his hand. A white furred rat with blue eyes dressed in an overcoat and joggers.

He glanced about at the ten or so others in the warehouse standing around crates full of guns and ammunition smuggled in by the Street-Rodants, one of the many gangs that controlled much of the city. Ron, the leader of the group gave a shrug of his shoulders and grabbed one of the rifles out of the crate and gave a smirk.

“Relax! We sell this shipment to any buyers we are good with and we’ll make a fortune.” The panther said with a toothy grin.

Marcus wasn’t so sure. “I’m just saying man, Tex’s group got hit hard last night. Four of his boys got smoked.”

“You worry too much, besides… I don’t believe in this damn gargoyle story the news has been spreading. Cops are just trying to scare us off the streets.” Ron replied back, grabbing a mag from the crate and loading it into the rifle. He pretended to be the confident one of their group. But was actually rather uneasy about the things going on in the city.

Then he gave a sigh when the sound of a car echoed outside, the door of the warehouse opened and a number of finely dressed people walked into the warehouse. A burly lion approached the group with a smile.

“Boys! It’s so good to see you! The Masked Lady sends her regards.”

Ronald gave a huff and motioned to the crates. “As much as I want to catch up Tex, we have business to get to. You bring us the money?”

“Hehe, the Lady doesn’t disappoint Ronald. You of all people should know that.” The lion replied as he turned to one of his men, a rhino snorted as he offered the lion a case. No doubt it held the money Ron wanted for the weapons crates.

“40 million as we agreed. Should get you boys some proper gear against anyone that tries to get in your way.” Tex said with a grin.

He offered the case to Ron and the panther took it and flipped the switches on the case. He glanced in and nodded to the Street-Rodants who started to push the crates toward the buyers.

Marcus twitched a bit and tilted his head. His ears shook as he heard something clank off of the floor. The rodent sniffed the air and frowned. “Hey boss, do you smell that?”

There was a hiss that rang in the rat’s ears and white smoke began to fill the room.

“Shit!” He heard Tex say, the rest of the rodents quickly grabbed weapons out of the crates and the buyers pulled pistols from their suits as they all looked around.

Marcus watched as the smoke rose over him, and quickly obscured his vision. He grabbed the revolver he had hidden in his overcoat and he pulled it forth. The sound of machine gun fire echoed around him abruptly and the rat took a few steps back away from it.

“W-wait! Wait! No- Gahhh!” Someone cried out followed by the sound of someone gurgling and something hard striking the cement floor.

Marcus gulped and peered around, he heard more gun shots which sent fear crawling up his spine. His pistol hand shook, more then it had in a long time. The rat shook his head as he heard someone struggling nearby.

“Fucking smoke man, can’t see a thing!” He uttered to himself.

More screams rang out, as he twirled around and pointed the gun in the direction of the screaming. Then he cocked back the hammer on his revolver and started to walk forward.

“Hey! Where the fuck is everyone!?” He called out.

The smoke was still strong in the air as he moved, stopping next to a steel beam that helped to hold up the structure of the warehouse. That was when he heard it, the scraping of metal across the floor. The rat turned and fired off three shots in the direction of the scraping.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

The sound echoed through the smoke as his hand continued to shake, he twitched and shook his head.

“Come on man! Ron! Where are you!”

The smoke twirled, something rushed past the rat. He gasped and twisted in a panic and fired two more shots from his revolver into the smoke.

“What the fuck man!”

There was a rustling of chains and the rat gulped, something fell from up high and there was a sickening crack that echoed through the warehouse. The rat whirled around once more and his eyes went wide in horror.

“Sh… Shit! Ronald!”

He shouted in horror as he saw the body of the panther swaying limp in front of him, strung up by a chain. Blood pooled from his body, his neck clearly broken from the fall. Someone or something had dragged the panther up into the rafters and hung him by the chain that was now firmly wrapped around his neck. Several scratch and stab marks, his gun arm was twisted and broken and blood pooled down from his dead form.

That was all the rat needed to see, he dropped his revolver and turned to run, panic overriding all sense of wanting to avenge his boss. He started to look for the nearest exit, the smoke had started to lift at that point.

“Gahh!”

Someone grabbed his overcoat and pulled him behind a crate and slammed his back against the wood. When he looked to see who it was, Tex was staring at him with a glare.

“Don’t speak!” He uttered with a growl.

The rat put his hands to his mouth and nodded, the lion held a steel pipe in his hand likely from the various discarded items one could find all over the warehouses that dotted the Avian District. He gulped and gave a nod and the lion grunted and glanced to his left.

“The door is right there.” He whispered.

“What the fuck is going on man!?” The rat blurted out.

“The gargoyle is here. Now shut the fuck up.” The lion snapped and grabbed him by his coat once more and pushed him toward the direction of the door.

Marcus moved quick but as he moved he heard the lion gasp in pain, when he turned to look he saw a black and golden form zip past between him and Tex. There was a flash of white and the lion was scratched across his face. He stumbled a bit as blood dripped from his face, it caused the rat to stop as he gulped.

The lion lifted the pipe he head and glanced around, when he saw Marcus just standing there he motioned to the door. “Get out of here!”

The black blur appeared out of the smoke once more and this time the rat got a much better look at the thing that had attacked both his and Tex’s gangs. The figure was adorned in a black leather suit with golden trim that ran along the arms and legs of the creature. Mechanical wings were folded against the it’s back and the head was shaped like that of an eagle’s. Black with gold around along the side of it’s neck. It’s eyes glowed gold as it moved with talons extended at Tex.

The lion reacted and parried the attack with his pipe, then tried to swing at the creature. It gave a clicking sound and side stepped the attack then lifted it’s leg up and landed a blow into the lion’s stomach. He grunted and took a step back, coughing a bit. But the creature wasn’t done, it moved forth and springboarded over Tex and landed behind him.

Marcus watched it horror as the talons of the creature flashed and the lion roared out in pain as the backs of his legs were slashed out. He stumbled down and the bird-like creature walked around the lion.

“Texas Mackron. You have served the Masked Lady for decades. Kidnapping avians and selling them on the city’s blackmarket. Your gang pollutes the Avian District with drugs that have driven the district to violence and homelessness.” The voice of the creature was mechanical in nature, and yet the rat recognized a feminine sound to it.

He looked at the creature with both fear and awe as he took in it’s features, the suit it wore was clearly military grade and skin tight as well, he could see the outline of it’s figure easily as it moved to stand in front of Tex.

“Your kind will rot this district no longer.” The creature said as it flashed it’s talons which were clearly made of some kind of metal.

The lion tried to stand but the gargoyle reacted at a speed that was nearly blinding, it’s talons ripped through Tex’s throat and his eyes went wide as blood quickly soaked his suit. He grabbed his neck as he tried to keep his life force trapped within but the creature raised it’s talons up and stabbed them repeatedly into the lion’s chest.

Then it shifted and swung it’s leg forth and struck the lion in the side of the head with a kick and knocked him onto his side.

The creature made an audible huff as a puff of steam exited where the nostrils of the beak would be and it tilted it’s head.

“Marcus Rogerson.”

The rat immediately gasped and fell on his back, he attempted to scurry backwards as the creature turned to face him and started to move.

“St-stay the fuck away from me!” He shouted in fear.

“You are guilty of selling weapons on the streets and are a known bank robber. By all rights I should tear your throat out as I did Tex.” The creature spoke as it moved toward him.

“I-I did do those things! But I’m just trying to survive man!”

“I know. I’ve been watching you. I’ve been watching all of you.”

The creature reached him and pulled him up by his coat. It slammed him against one of the beams and the golden eyes glowed bright.

“Your going to deliver a message to the police. Tell them everything you’ve seen here tonight. Tell them of the crimes you’ve committed.”

“Wha-!? What no! I’ll go to prison!” The rat started.

The gargoyle gave a bird-like caw as it raised a taloned hand and grabbed him by his throat. “You WILL confess your crimes! Or else you’ll end up like your boss, only I’ll hand you by your intestines instead! Do I make myself clear?”

The rat gulped and gave a quick nod, if it was prison or certain death. He preferred to take his chances with the cops. The creature let go of his neck and he dropped down to the floor. The creature turned away and moved on from him. The smoke cleared and the rat could now see the carnage that had been obstructed by the haze. All of his fellow Street-Rodants were either dead or bleeding out. The people that Tex had brought with him were likewise dispatched, though one of them had bullet holes sprayed into him likely from the confusion of the smoke.

The creature’s wings extended from it’s back and began to hum a soft golden light and the creature gave them a flap and started to rise, then it took off through the skylight of the warehouse and left Marcus trembling.

When the coppers finally did arrive only moments later, the rat was found sitting where the gargoyle had left him, a hand over his mouth as they examined the bodies…

Beep! Beep! Beep!

“Oh fuck off!” Anzu swung her arm and smacked the alarm clock on her side table silencing it as she opened one eye.

Soft light shined through the curtains of her window as she gave a groan. She slowly sat up and yawned, stretching her body a bit. The harpy eagle threw off her blankets and snatched up her phone, when she peered at the screen it read; “Saturday, 8:30 AM.”

“The store will be closed today. I’ll have today all to myself.” She huffed and rested her phone back down and laid her head back down on the pillow.

Sudden pain shot up her right leg and she winced as she looked at it, crimson had soaked through bandage wrappings that were firmly around her thigh. She glanced toward the bathroom, where a plate rested, a single mangled bullet from a machine gun rested on it, still colored red from her blood.

“Still not as fast as I’d like. Damn I’m going to be sore for a bit.”

She sighed and forced herself to sit up, ignoring the pain as she stood up from her bed and limped to her dresser and started to get dressed for the day. She covered herself with a white tank top and jeans and flipped on her TV as she brushed the feathers on her head.

As she did so she heard the news playing…

“Overnight violence once again erupted in the Avian District! A total of 11 bodies were discovered in a warehouse, where a suspected weapons sale went sour!”

She moved back to her bathroom and sat the brush down and looked in the mirror, staring at the gray and white feathered face that peered back.

The news continued to play…

“Some are saying they saw a winged creature in the sky! What some in the avian district have called the Gargoyle! One suspect was arrested from the warehouse! One Marcus Rogerson! Known for his connections to the Street-Rodant gang that has plagued the city for a few years now!”

Anzu stared into her own eyes in the mirror. Her eyes were a soft golden color…
