Pokemon - To Catch Them All - Complete The Pokedex

Lucas starts his journey by exploring Route 1 and begins the long arduous task of catching every Pokemon.

"Yeah I choose Squirtle Professor." I looked down at the Squirtle who looked at me with shy curious eyes. Honestly I chose Squirtle because he reminded me of myself, shy, inexperienced and new to the world. I watched as Squirtle approached me cautiously, as he observed me. His eyes wondered over me, judging whether I was a trainer he'd get along with. He must have decided to give me a shot when he held his paw/hand out and extended it to me.

"Well, looks like you two have become partners then. Well, here's Squirtle's Poke ball Lucas." At that Professor Oak handed me Squirtle's Poke ball and I gratefully took it. For now I decided to have Squirtle remain outside of his Poke ball in fact, he even rode on my shoulder much to my interest.

"So, then what are you thinking of doing on your journey Lucas? Perhaps you want to become a strong trainer? Or maybe you want to become a gym leader? Or maybe you are travelling to find out what exactly you'd like to do?" Professor Oak seemed eager to learn about my future endeavours and I proudly turned to him. It was sudden but thanks to the Rotom phone and learning more about it. I wanted to complete the Pokedex and catch every Pokemon I could.

"I want to catch every Pokemon to complete the Pokedex, Professor." I spoke looking at Squirtle who seemed a little stunned at my ideology but soon smiled finding my apparent determination to be rather impressive. Even Professor Oak looked briefly stunned before he smiled wide and spoke. "Lucas my boy, that sounds like a grand journey and I know you'll have lots of fun on your journey."

At that I thanked Professor Oak once again and was about to leave when Professor Oak stopped me once again. "Ah, before you leave I think you'll find these to be of help. Five Poke balls to help you get started on your catching spree. Remember there are thousands of Pokemon out there in the world. Catching them all will prove to be a challenging task but with determination you may very well succeed."

I thanked Professor Oak once again and exited the laboratory and began making my way back home to introduce my Squirtle to my mother. Admittedly, I wasn't sure whether I should tell her about the incident with Team Rocket from earlier. She might become worried and I'd hate to cause her worry. I shrugged that feeling away when I quickly returned home finding my mum finishing packing my bag.

"Well, look at you, you chose Squirtle did you? Doesn't he look cute." My mum spoke as she looked at my Squirtle who shied away from her, hiding lightly behind my legs much to my intrigue. "Yeah, he's a little shy, but with time, I think he'll come out of his shell." I didn't intend on the pun, but it definitely made Squirtle let out a small noise of amusement.

"I can already see that you two will become fast friends. So, I've packed your bag. In these pockets you can keep your Poke balls, there's a lot of space in there so you can carry about I'd wager, a hundred or so in there. This pocket here can be for your medicinals, potions, bandages etcetera too. Remember your caring not just for yourself out there, but your Pokemon too. Always carry a good number of potions around with you, as well as antidotes and other healing items for status conditions okay?"

I thanked my mum extensively and added the five Poke balls Professor Oak had given me and placed them in the pocket with the five my mum had provided me. Now I had ten in total. That should be more than enough to make a start on the Pokemon waiting for me on the beginning routes. I noticed mum had even packed some additional potions as well for the journey much to my added thanks too.

"Well then, I guess we'll be off for now." I spoke lightly and my mum nodded, before asking, "so where are you headed first?" I thoughtfully pondered that and figured the best first destination would be Pewter City. "I'll make my way to Pewter City, there's a gym there for beginner trainers." Mum nodded in understanding, "to get there you'll go through Viridian City and Viridian Forest too. It'll be quite an adventure too."

I nodded and said my final goodbyes before grabbing my back and hoisting it on my back. At that I exited my home with a final goodbye and a wave over my shoulder before I began making my way north of Pallet Town to Route 1, where my journey would officially start.

Walking through the route I noticed it was rather small, I could already see Viridian City in the distance but I didn't mind and set about searching through the tall grass for whoever would be my very first encounter. Squirtle had hopped down from my shoulder to be ready in case we were attacked suddenly. Eventually perched in a tree overlooking the route I spotted a small Pidgey observing me.

"Alright Squirtle that Pidgey will be our very first capture okay?" Squirtle nodded his nerves slowly disappearing as he looked up at the Pidgey. Then I suddenly realised I didn't know what moves my Squirtle could use and quickly asked Rotom. "Rotom, what moves can Squirtle use?" Rotom quickly gave me the list of moves, "Squirtle is capable of using Tackle, Tail Whip, Withdraw and Water Gun too." I nodded thanking Rotom and began preparing myself for my first ever battle against a wild Pokemon.

"Squirtle use Water Gun." Squirtle fired a small Water Gun at the stationery Pidgey but it managed to dodge just barely by flying from its perch and descending using Gust. "Squirtle get inside your shell and use Withdraw!" By ducking into his shell, he managed to withstand the strong Gust that Pidgey whipped up.

Pidgey continued using Gust but soon stopped clearly exhausted from continually blowing its wings. "Now Squirtle use Water Gun!" At that Squirtle peeked outside of his shell, noticed the exhausted Pidgey and fired a Water Gun point blank hitting the stunned Pidgey. I watched seeing Pidgey plummet down to the ground and decided to take a chance. "Poke ball go!" I threw the ball and watched as it landed right on Pidgey's wing and it sure looked stunned.

I watched as the ball shook, once, twice, three times before Pidgey managed to break free from the Poke ball surprising me and Squirtle. "Don't worry Squirtle, we just need to weaken Pidgey just a little more. Now go and use Tackle!" I commanded seeing Squirtle regain his composure and start running towards Pidgey.

Pidgey wasn't going down easily and flew over brushing its wing against the ground before sending a plume of sand right at Squirtle who was going much to fast to stop. "That's Sand Attack! Squirtle, quick use Water Gun to disperse the sand before you get blinded!" Thanks to the quick command Squirtle fired a Water Gun straight into the sand dissipating it before it could effectively blind him.

Without missing a beat Squirtle then barrelled into Pidgey with his Tackle sending the Pidgey once again to the ground. This time I threw a second Poke ball and watched as it shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. Rotom registered the capture for me, showcasing the information. "Pidgey has been registered to your Pokedex. Pidgey the Tiny Bird Pokemon, a Normal and Flying Type. It is docile and prefers to avoid conflict. If disturbed, however, it can ferociously strike back."

I picked up Pidgey's Poke ball and felt strangely excited at having successfully captured my very first Pokemon. "Amazing work Squirtle!" I cheered as Squirtle leapt into my hands smiling happily. "Lets introduce ourselves yeah? Come out Pidgey!" I threw the Poke ball and out come my newest capture.

"Nice to meet you Pidgey, my names Lucas and this here is my Squirtle. I hope we can be good friends." Pidgey looked over at me cocking his head while also turning to see the Squirtle in my arms before nodding. I smiled and was even a little shocked when the Pidgey landed upon my head as I walked.

While I traversed the grass, Pidgey and Squirtle seemed to get introducing themselves, chatting away while I looked at my Rotom Phone. "Rotom what other Pokemon can be found here?" Rotom procured a list of the available Pokemon and I noticed that Rattata, Bellsprout and Oddish were the next targets.

"Lets see, next I'll try and find a Rattata I think." I murmured more to myself, but Pidgey decided to offer aerial support and began searching for a Rattata from the air. I wasn't one to just sit back and do nothing and walked through the grass before I came across a small group of Rattata.

However the Rattata all spotted me and began dispersing, except for one, now this Rattata sure looked confident, snarling lightly in my direction. "This guys pretty tough, lets catch him." Squirtle nodded in agreement already standing ready to fight the Rattata. "Squirtle Water Gun!" Squirtle launched his Water Gun but Rattata dodged faster than I expected. "Okay then Squirtle use Tackle!" Squirtle ran towards Rattata who countered with his own Tackle attack.

The two small Pokemon collided and began pushing trying to overpower the other. Squirtle must have been more determined as he began pushing Rattata back, eventually forcing the Rattata to back up. "Now use Water Gun again!" Because Rattata was rather winded from the Water Gun I figured it wouldn't have the speed to dodge the attack in time. It sure seemed like my guess worked as Squirtle unleashed Water Gun hitting Rattata directly before it could react.

"Now go Poke ball!" I threw the ball and watched as it shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Rattata has been registered to your Pokedex. Rattata the Mouse Pokemon a Normal Type. Its cautious in the extreme and its hardy vitality lets it live in any kind of environment." I was happy to have yet another friend and quickly released Rattata from his Poke ball.

"Nice to meet you Rattata!" Squirtle quickly dropped down to have a look at Rattata and Rattata sure seemed to make fast friends with Squirtle. I was interrupted when Pidgey flew over chirping loudly while flying off gesturing for me to follow him. I assumed he must have found either a Oddish or a Bellsprout.

I followed him while Squirtle and Rattata quickly followed me keeping up with my speed. Eventually Pidgey swooped down and landed a little bit in front of a Bellsprout that looked a little surprised at being confronted by a Pidgey and a human with an entourage of Pokemon. "Good work Pidgey, I know since you have a type advantage lets battle together." Pidgey sure seemed to be in agreement.

"Pidgey use Gust!" Pidgey rapidly flapped his wings creating a whirlwind flying straight into Bellsprout who clearly was taking a lot of damage. The attack was super effective and it clearly showed. Still Bellsprout wasn't the type to give in it seemed and managed to send a Vine Whip to try and catch Pidgey.

"Dodge that with Quick Attack then strike." I commanded and Pidgey showed great aerial agility dodging the Vine Whip up and over before managing to close in and strike with Quick Attack. The following attack looked to have weakened Bellsprout more than enough, so I threw a Poke ball and the weakened Bellsprout and watched as the ball shook once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed.

"Bellsprout has been registered to your Pokedex. Bellsprout the Flower Pokemon a Grass and Poison Type. It prefers hot and humid environments. It is quick at capturing prey with its vines." I realised that with each capture not only were my Pokemon growing stronger but I was also learning more about each individual Pokemon too. I didn't know Bellsprout preferred hot and humid environments but when I thought about it, it did make sense for a Grass Type to prefer being in a area where the sun would be.

Again I released Bellsprout healing him up and he sure seemed to tag along with us. I was also beginning to wonder something. When I battled these Pokemon they all seemed to fight desperately, but once they're caught they seem to become fast friends with me. Is that normal? I thought it took time to form a connection with Pokemon. I bet Professor Oak would have a scientific reason to explain it.

"Nice to meet you Bellsprout." Bellsprout surprised me by shaking my hand with his vines. It must have been his very own unique way of having a hand shake. "That leaves only Oddish remaining, oh and I need to catch two Oddish. Because Oddish evolves into Gloom and then further into either a Vileplume or a Bellossom depending on which evolution stone I use."

Squirtle, Pidgey, Rattata and Bellsprout seemed to listen closely as I explained my reasoning. At that they split into two groups and began searching the area for Oddish. For the next several minutes I too looked around the area when Rattata and Bellsprout showed me a Oddish they had found.

"How about we have a battle Rattata?" I asked and Rattata looked back at me nodding with a excited expression on his face. "Alright Tackle Rattata!" Rattata barrelled faster than I expected into Oddish who too looked surprised at Rattata's speed. However, I was surprised when Oddish also moved quite fast, launching a surprise Absorb before I could even react. "Hang on Oddish must have the ability Chlorophyl which increases its speed when it sunlight."

At that I knew I needed to formulate a strategy to defeat Oddish before it could use the sunlight to its advantage. "Lets go eve faster Rattata, use Quick Attack and circle around Oddish, try and confuse it." Rattata faithfully followed my command and circled around Oddish faster than I could track him. Oddish too seemed a little confused but rapidly launched an Acid attack firing at where it thought Rattata was.

"Careful, don't let the Acid hit you Rattata, jump and dodge it!" Rattata used his speed from the Quick Attack and dodged the Acid attacks before hitting Oddish with a second attack. In and out he kept evading the attacks and landing his own before Oddish could do anything.

"Now use Tackle Rattata!" Rattata heard the command and made his move striking Oddish from behind landing the hit sending Oddish tumbling to the ground. "Poke ball go." I threw the ball and watched it shake once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed. "Oddish has been registered to your Pokedex. Oddish the Weed Pokemon a Grass and Poison Type. It often plants its roots feet in the ground during the day and sows seeds as it walks about at night."

"That's one Oddish now I just need to catch a second Oddish and then I can have both a Vileplume and Bellossom." Hearing my comment, my new Oddish jumped up and down and headed into the grass before turning to me, wanting me to follow him to wherever he was going.

Turns out he had led me to a second Oddish who immediately understood what was happening. "Bellsprout come on out." Bellsprout was ready to battle for me. "A Grass and Poison Type against another Grass and Poison Type. This will be a interesting battle no doubt."

"Now Bellsprout use Vine Whip." Bellsprout extended his vines towards Oddish hoping to land several hits, but just like the previous Oddish I caught this one also had the ability Chlorophyl making this even more difficult than it already was. "Bellsprout keep using Vine Whip, Oddish can't keep dodging forever." I was beginning to get desperate while Bellsprout too was beginning to get annoyed at the Oddish continually evading his attacks.

Until, the sun was covered by some clouds and that was just what we needed. "Now Bellsprout rapid fire Vine Whip go!" Oddish tried to dodge but without the sunlight he wasn't fast enough to escape the attack. Eventually Bellsprout landed several attacks weakening Oddish just enough for me to throw a Poke ball. The ball shook, once, twice, three times before the capture was confirmed.

For the next few hours I continually explored the route and had my Pokemon battle the wild Pokemon and continued to form strong bonds with my Pokemon. Squirtle was beginning to come out of his shell so to speak. His confidence growing with every battle and subsequent victory too. Pidgey was a curious and very observant Pokemon, he liked to perch on my shoulder as we walked observing the route from above for potential dangers that I couldn't quite see.

Rattata was a very unique Pokemon when it came to defying expectations. Normally all Rattata I've seen are rather nervous and keep far away from both Pokemon and people too. This Rattata however? Aggressive, confident and had the apparent strength to back up that skill level. In battle he was a different Pokemon altogether but outside of battle he was rather protective of me, much like Pidgey, keeping an eye out for hidden dangers.

Then there were the two Oddish I had caught and they both acted pretty much the same as each other. I think they quite enjoyed to play and chat together. Bellsprout too enjoyed to chat with his fellow Grass and Poison Types too. Outside of battle Bellsprout was a rather stoic Pokemon which kind of surprised me, yet didn't completely. I had soon figured that Pokemon have got unique personalities and characteristics that make one Pokemon completely different from another of the same species.

While exploring a little further into the area, I came across my very first trainer, a Youngster who challenged me to a battle using his Rattata. "Come out Squirtle!" Squirtle was ready for his very first battle against an actual trainer and I was too. "Squirtle Water Gun!" Squirtle's aim was true and he landed a powerful Water Gun sending Rattata sprawling backwards. I didn't even give the Youngster a chance to take a chance and moved in. "Squirtle Tackle go." Before Rattata could fully react Squirtle barrelled into Rattata winning the battle.

I headed North and finally reached Viridian City, even though it wasn't a short journey at all. It had only taken me a while because I wanted to catch all the Pokemon I could and then make strong bonds with them too. Still it was a fun journey just reaching the very first city in itself.

I stopped in the Pokemon Centre realising it was already getting a little late and figured I'd have my Pokemon healed and then book a room for the night. Tomorrow I'd begin making my way up further North through Viridian Forest and then ultimately to Pewter City. After a brief moment, Nurse Joy had my Pokemon fully restored to health and I thanked her before receiving a room to rest for the night too.
