Chapter 15: It's not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me. -Batman
Bryan sat on a deceptively firm couch in a small waiting room, his paws fidgeting nervously in his lap. The room in the administrative building was eerily quiet, save for the soft rhythmic ticking of a wall clock and the occasional rustle of movement. To his left, Chase lounged in her seat. The coyote's ears flicked as she lazily scrolled through her phone. Her casual demeanor was a stark contrast to the nervous energy radiating from Bryan. On his right, Nic sat rigidly. The otter's whiskers twitched with barely contained anxiety as they kept glancing around the room.
Bryan sighed and looked over at the closed door to the conference room. The room where his fate was soon to be decided. The rabbit's knees started to bounce slightly as Bryan's foot tapped against the floor.
"You know," Chase said, not looking up from her screen, "staring at that door isn't going to make it open any faster."
Bryan's ears flattened against his head. "I know," he mumbled, "I just... I still can't believe this is happening."
Nic reached over and gave Bryan's paw a gentle squeeze. "We're here for you, no matter what happens," they said softly.
Bryan nodded, grateful for both of their support. Bryan glanced over at a small table that sat in front of where they sat. His phone lay face-down next to a stack of magazines. The urge to check it was almost overwhelming.
Dreo and Toby had convinced Bryan to block Jason as a contact earlier in the week. It had been a difficult decision, one that had left Bryan feeling both relieved and hollow. Still, the last several days had been a herculean effort of not reading his messages or reaching out to the wolf. Despite everything Bryan had been through, he was still being consumed by that most horrible of questions. What if-?
That wasn't even the worst of it. There had also been the hills and valleys of Bryan's shifting moods as he tried to piece himself back together. If not for his friends, there would have been periods when Bryan would have broken down completely. Their support had made all the difference. Still, Bryan would be lying if he said he still didn't think about Jason almost constantly.
There were times when Bryan wanted to call Jason and yell at him, to unleash all the hurt and anger that had been building up inside him. His paws would shake with the desire to dial the number he knew by heart. Other times, Bryan wanted to call the wolf and cry, to ask why things had turned out the way they had. In these moments, the loneliness would threaten to overwhelm him. And then there were the times when Bryan simply wanted to just hear Jason's voice. These were perhaps the most dangerous moments when the longing for what they had shared threatened to override his common sense and self-preservation.
"Don't even think about it," Chase said sharply, her eyes flicking up from her phone to fix Bryan with a stern look. Her gaze was piercing, as if she could read every thought running through Bryan's mind.
"You need to focus on yourself right now, not on what that jerk might or might not say," Chase continued, her voice softening slightly but still carrying an edge of steel.
Bryan's paw, which had been inching towards his phone, froze mid-air. He felt a warm flush of embarrassment radiate from his ears as he realized how transparent his actions had been. "I wasn't-" he began, but the lie died on his lips as he met Chase's knowing gaze.
"You were," Chase cut him off, her tone softening further. The coyote's eyes held a mix of understanding and concern. "Look, I get it. But right now, you need to worry about you. Whatever else there is, can wait."
Nic nodded in agreement. "Chase is right. You've got enough on your plate without adding any other drama to the mix."
Bryan sighed and slumped back against the hard couch, feeling the unyielding surface press against his spine. They were both right, of course. But that didn't make the temptation any less strong. Bryan's mind kept replaying the events that had led him here and everything he and the others had rehearsed.
The entire pride club had held a mock committee meeting, a memory that brought a mix of gratitude and anxiety to Bryan's heart. At first, it had been horrifyingly awkward, with his friends trying to mimic the stern demeanor of the committee members. But as they progressed, Bryan found himself truly appreciating their efforts.
It actually made him feel like he wasn't going into this for the first time, blind. The support of his friends, their willingness to put themselves in uncomfortable positions to help him, touched Bryan deeply. It was a stark reminder that he wasn't alone in this fight.
They had gone over things like what Bryan should say, which topics he should avoid, and how he should word certain things. It was a lot to take in, a whirlwind of advice and scenarios that sometimes left Bryan's head spinning. But each one of his friends had helped Bryan through the mock questions one step at a time, their patience and understanding never wavering.
Was he going to be prepared for everything? — Of course not. The thought sent a shiver of fear down Bryan's spine. There was no way to anticipate every question, every angle the committee might take. But what mattered was that he didn't feel alone. The knowledge that his friends were there, supporting him, gave Bryan a strength he hadn't known he possessed.
Instead of reaching for his phone again, Bryan tapped his thumbs against one another. The repetitive motion was soothing, giving him something to focus on besides the closed door and the ticking clock. He strained his ears to try and hear if something, anything- was happening in the next room. But the only sound besides the clock was the soft tapping of Chase's fingers against her phone screen.
Bryan found himself envying the coyote's apparent calm. How could she be so relaxed when his entire future hung in the balance? Chase's composure seemed almost superhuman in the face of the stress that was threatening to overwhelm Bryan. He wondered if she truly felt as calm as she appeared, or if it was just a well-practiced facade.
As the minutes ticked by, each one feeling longer than the last, Bryan's mind wandered to all the possible outcomes of the hearing. Would they believe him? Would they listen to his side of the story? Or had Jason's and Jessica's lies already sealed his fate? The uncertainty was almost worse than knowing, leaving Bryan's imagination to conjure up increasingly dire scenarios.
As if reading his thoughts again, Chase spoke up. "You're going to be okay. You know, my cousin went through something similar last year. Different circumstances, but same basic thing- disciplinary hearing, potential expulsion, the works."
Bryan's ears perked up. "Yeah? What happened?"
Chase shrugged, her eyes still on her phone, thumbs moving deftly across the screen. "Accidentally hit a jaywalker on campus in her car. She kept her cool, told her side of the story, and came out okay. The key is not to let them see you sweat."
"I'm not sure that really relates," Nic muttered, their tail swishing nervously.
"Hey, I'm just trying to help," Chase replied, finally looking up from her phone. Her expression softened as she took in Bryan's worried face. "Look, all I'm saying is you've got this, okay? You didn't do anything wrong. Just remember that."
Bryan nodded, trying to draw what strength he could from her words. Bryan took a deep breath, focusing on the sensation of air filling his lungs. In, out. In, out. He could do this. He had to do this. There was no other choice.
The three continued to share glances as the minutes ticked by, each one feeling longer than the last. The hands on the clock on the wall moved with agonizing slowness. Bryan's mind continued to wander, left to its own musings. His imagination ran wild as he pictured all the possible outcomes of the hearing. Would they believe him? Would they listen to his side of the story? Or had Jason and Jessica's lies already sealed his fate?
His paw inched towards his phone again, almost of its own accord. Maybe if he just checked quickly- The device seemed to call to him, promising answers or comfort or something, anything to ease the gnawing anxiety in his gut.
"Bryan," Chase's voice was a low warning. Her eyes were fixed on his paw, her expression a mixture of understanding and firmness.
He snatched his paw back, ears burning anew with embarrassment. "Sorry," he mumbled, ducking his head to avoid Chase's gaze.
Nic gave him a sympathetic look. "Hey did Dreo and Toby say when they were gonna get here?"
“Toby texted earlier. Said they had to swing by their dorm room and would be right over after he changed clothes," Chase scoffed.
“Afterwards we're still going to go grab a late lunch, right? Did you decide on where you…" Nic trailed off as they noticed Bryan's uncomfortable posture. The rabbit's ears drooped slightly at the mention of future plans.
“Sorry, just trying to make small talk," Nic said in a quiet voice.
Bryan looked over at the otter with a forced smile. “No- it's alright. I just... I keep thinking about everything I could lose. My scholarship, my future..."
Nic nodded, “It's okay to be nervous. It's a lot - like a lot a lot.."
"It is a lot…," Chase picked up from Nic, her voice uncharacteristically gentle. "But you just have to take it one step at a time. And I know I sound like a broken record, but you didn't do anything wrong and that's the exact decision they will come to."
Bryan nodded, forcing himself to sit up straighter. "You're right. But what if I–"
"Don't think about what you could lose," Chase interjected. "Think about what you're fighting for. Your reputation, your integrity, your right to be here."
Her words struck a chord in Bryan. She was right - he wasn't just defending himself against false accusations. He was standing up for his right to exist in this space, to be himself without fear or shame.
As Bryan mulled over Chase's words, the door to the conference room opened. A stern-faced elderly beaver in a slightly wrinkled blouse and dress skirt stepped out, clipboard in hand. "Bryan Bramblebush?" she called, her voice echoing in the small quiet waiting area.
Bryan's heart leapt into his throat. This was it. The moment he had been dreading and preparing for had finally arrived. Bryan stood on shaky legs, his knees feeling weak and unreliable. He smoothed down his fur with trembling paws, straightening his shirt in a futile attempt to make himself more presentable.
Chase reached out and grabbed his paw, giving it a quick squeeze. "Remember, you've got this. We'll be right here waiting for you." Nic also nodded their agreement.
Bryan took a deep breath, squaring his shoulders. With a final nod to his friends, he headed towards the conference room.
As Bryan walked over, the beaver held the door open and gestured for Bryan to enter. When Bryan stepped inside, the beaver closed the door behind them. The rabbit's eyes were immediately drawn to an imposing wooden table that dominated the space. Four individuals sat behind the long wooden table: Coach Martinez, whose stern expression made Bryan's stomach churn; Tammy Ringwood, Chase's mother, her professional demeanor masking any familiarity, and two other faculty members Bryan vaguely recognized from around campus.
Bryan held his paws down by his sides as he continued walking forward. The elderly beaver that had gotten him from the waiting area stepped around him. Then she walked over and joined the other 4 committee members, taking a seat behind the table.
"Please take a seat, Mr. Bramblebush," Mrs. Ringwood said as she gestured to the lone chair on his side of the table. Sunlight streamed in from a wall of windows looking out over the campus behind the committee members. The bright and cheerful blue sky with soft white clouds over the green campus lawn was a stark contrast to the mood and tone within the room.
Bryan's eyes scanned the rest of the space before he walked over and settled into the chair. "Is... is Jason coming?"
"Mr. Whilmeton will not be attending," Mrs. Ringwood explained gently. "Due to the sensitive nature of these proceedings, we don't require victims to confront their alleged harassers directly. Statements are taken and then reviewed with each party individually by the committee or their members."
Bryan's ears drooped at the word 'victim'. The thought of Jason being afraid of him made his chest ache.
Mrs. Ringwood turned and gestured towards Coach Martinez. “Mr. Whilmeton has already given his statement to Coach Martinez. You are here today to give your statement and respond to questions pertaining to the accusation levied against you of inappropriate behavior. These accusations have been filed in a complaint on Mr.Whilmeton's behalf and corroborated with official statements from others. The specific complaint is the unwarranted and inappropriate sexual harassment of one student by another. Which, as per the student handbook is a zero tolerance offense. If there is any credence for these accusations then you will be expelled, any existing student aid will be revoked, and you will be dropped from any currently attended classes with a non-passing incomplete."
The coyote cleared her throat," Do you follow along and understand everything I have said so far Mr. Bramblebush?
As Mrs. Ringwood finished speaking, Bryan gave a hesitant nod of acknowledgment.
Mrs. Ringwood continued, “After this review, we will break for a brief intermission while the committee members review your statement and answers to our questions before rendering a final judgment. Should additional statements be required then this committee will adjourn until such a date as those meetings can be scheduled. Do you have any questions regarding this process or the accusations as I have explained, Mr. Bramblebush?"
Bryan slowly shook his head.
“Please verbally answer the question," one of the committee members Bryan didn't recognize said.
“No. No- ma'am… no questions," Bryan replied.
"Good." Mrs. Ringwood continued. "Now, let us begin." The coyote turned over a sheet of paper in front of her before speaking again," Please state your name, your major, and your relationship with Jason Whilmeton."
Bryan took in and let out a deep breath as he steeled his nerves. Just like we practiced back in the dorm, the rabbit mentally told himself. Bryan looked up and scanned the committee members, his gaze settling on Chase's mom, Mrs Ringwood.
"My name is Bryan Bramblebush, I'm an applied mathematics major- first year freshman. And Jason and I are- were roommates."
Mrs. Ringwood nodded, making a note on her paper. "Mr. Whilmeton was your second roommate since starting this semester as a freshman. That correct?"
“Yes," Bryan answered, uncertain of where the question was leading.
Coach Martinez was the next to speak up. “Your previous roommate requested a room transfer. The reasons listed are incompatibility and irreconcilable differences due to sexual orientation. Do you care to elaborate on this?"
Bryan felt a little thrown off but recovered quickly. He had not been expecting to answer questions about his first roommate.
“He found out I was gay, and that made him uncomfortable. We had a disagreement that the dorm manager resolved and we decided that we were not right for each other as roommates. Jason was then reassigned as my new roommate."
“The incident in question was documented in an incident report by the dorm manager," Coach Martinez quickly followed up," your previous roommate stated that you made him uncomfortable with unsolicited comments and discussions regarding sexual orientations and preferences."
Bryan fidgeted nervously with his paws in his lap," It- it wasn't like that. We got into an argument. There was some yelling… the dorm mother stepped in and that was it."
Coach Martinez let out huff, “At any point in time did you make any inappropriate comments or sexual advances toward your previous roommate?"
Bryan shook his head, “ No, like I said, it wasn't like that."
Coach Martinez's eyes narrowed. "And afterward, you didn't feel that it was appropriate for you to be roomed with another male student, given your... orientation?"
Bryan felt a flare of indignation at the coach's tone. "No, I didn't," he said, his voice stronger now. "Being gay doesn't mean I can't be around other males. Jason knew I was gay from the start. He said it didn't bother him."
“And yet," Coach Martinez started as he flipped to another piece of paper in front of him, “shortly after Mr.Whilmenton was assigned as your new roommate you sent an email to the dorm manager requesting an immediate room transfer with the reason being, irreconcilable differences. A similar request was filed by Mr.Whilmeton. There seems to be a common theme with you and your roommate, Mr.Bramblebush."
Mrs. Ringwood cleared her throat. “Thank you, Coach Martinez. Let it be noted for the record that Hightail University is an equal opportunity campus with a diverse student body composed of multiple species, genders, and sexual orientations. Student admissions are based on merit criteria only without discrimination. Furthermore, we are here to review the accusations levied by Mr.Whilmenton." Mrs.Ringwood added before Coach Martinez could continue.
Coach Martinez glared at the coyote as Mrs. Ringwood continued.
“Mr. Bramblebush, moving on. Can you please expand further on the nature of your relationship with Mr.Whilmeton?"
As the coyote spoke, Coach Martinez leaned back and crossed his arms, his eyes fixed on Bryan. The other committee members remained silent. Their expressions were neutral as they waited for Bryan's response.
Bryan bit his lip as he thought about the question. This had been another prompt he had practiced for but one he didn't want to respond to. Bryan felt like it wasn't any of their business. His memories of him and Jason were all that Bryan had left, they were precious.
That wasn't the only reason though. In truth, Bryan felt like he didn't really know what the nature of his and Jason's relationship was. Bryan knew what he thought, hoped, it was - but after everything that had happened. Bryan was uncertain if he had just imagined everything. The silent stares of the committee members only hardened as Bryan debated what he should or shouldn't say. He decided to go with his rehearsed response.
"I was Jason's roommate and his tutor. Over time we became friends. At Least, I thought we had become friends."
"Friends?" Coach Martinez's voice dripped with skepticism. "According to the complaint, you used your position as a tutor to isolate and manipulate him. Threatened his academic standing if he didn't comply with your... demands."
"That's not true," Bryan's voice cracked. "I would never-"
"We have witness statements," Coach cut in, shuffling through papers. "Multiple accounts of you forcing physical contact, arranging private meetings off-campus-"
"The coffee shop was his idea!" Bryan protested, then immediately regretted it as the committee exchanged glances.
"Mr. Bramblebush," Mrs. Ringwood interjected, her tone measured. "Please try to remain calm. We all understand the seriousness of these allegations. This committee," the coyote turned her head slightly and looked over at Coach Martinez, “is not without due process. I assure you we will review both sides of this thoroughly to take into account both parties' viewpoints."
One of the other committee members spoke up, a Doe. "Mr. Bramlebush, when did this tutoring arrangement begin?"
Bryan's ears twitched nervously. "A few weeks after we became roommates. Jason was having trouble with his classes, I thought I could help."
Mrs. Ringwood made a note on her paper as she asked a follow-up question. "And these tutoring sessions, where did they take place?"
"Usually in our dorm room," Bryan replied. "Sometimes in the library or the student center, if we needed more space or resources."
"Mr. Bramblebush, there was a documented incident in the filed complaint about an altercation off campus at a nearby coffee shop. Can you please explain, in your own words, what occurred? And is there anything you can tell us about how Jason perceived your and his interactions?" The doe committee member asked.
Bryan could feel tears threatening to well up in his eyes but he held them back. He could tell them everything - about Jason their shared moments and the truth behind the coffee shop meeting. But even now, facing expulsion, Bryan hesitated. He couldn't bring himself to out Jason infront of these people. Bryan wouldn't, couldn't do that to someone else. Not when he personally knew what being on the other end of that felt like.
"We were meeting up for coffee and Jason became uncomfortable. I don't know how Jason felt. But I have never harassed anyone, especially Jason," Bryan said quietly. "We studied together. Sometimes we would get each other coffee. I thought we were friends, but if Jason felt uncomfortable...then that's on me." Bryan swallowed hard. "I would never have knowingly hurt him or forced him into doing something he didn't want to do..."
The committee members exchanged looks. Coach Martinez's expression remained hard, but something flickered across Mrs. Ringwood's face - a sad understanding.
The coyote leaned forward, her eyes softening slightly. "Mr. Bramblebush, I understand this is a difficult situation. But we need to understand the full context of these events and your relationship with Mr. Whilmeton. How often would you say you and Mr.Whelmeton had tutoring sessions?"
Byran nodded,"A couple of times a week- maybe. Sometimes we would just review courcework in our room."
“Did you ever demand payment either monetarily or through other means for your tutoring services?"
Bryan shook his head.
The elderly badger let out a sigh. “Please answer the question verbally Mr. Bramblebush."
“No Ma'am"
Mrs.Ringwood continued," During your tutoring sessions did you ever set limits on Jason's interactions with others or make demands about his physical appearance?"
“No Ma'am"
Coach Martinez spoke up "We have 18 documented text messages from Jason - Mr.Whilemeton," the cougar cleared his throat," and others stating that he was unable to participate in any other activities because I quote, 'can't tutoring session, being forced to stay in, Gotta pass, 'Mandated' tutor session, can't Bryan said I need to concentrate on my studies or else'… among others."
Bryan's eyes darted left and right as he thought about the texts. Maybe they were taken out of context? Maybe that's how Jason really felt? "I. We- We had scheduled study sessions but I never forced Jason to attend any of them. I have set hours I provide tutoring services in the learning lab. Maybe.."
“And yet most of your tutoring between the two of you was done in your dorm room correct?" The cougar followed up.
“Well, yes. But-"
“And what exactly did you two do during all of these tutoring sessions?"
Bryan took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves and get back on script. "We... we started out just reviewing coursework. Jason was struggling with his business courses, and I offered to help. Our tutoring sessions were just about academics."
Coach Martinez interjected, his voice sharp. "And when did it become about more than academics?"
Bryan's ears flattened against his head. "It didn't, not like that. We just... we started talking more. About our lives, our interests. It was nice to have a friend on campus."
One of the other committee members, the doe from earlier, spoke up again, her voice gentle. "Did you ever feel that Mr. Whilmeton was uncomfortable during these interactions?"
"No, never," Bryan said firmly. "If anything, he seemed to enjoy our time together. He'd often suggest we study longer."
The older badger who had opened the door spoke next. "Young man, were you aware of Mr. Whilmeton's relationship status during this time?"
Bryan hesitated, unsure of how to answer. "I... I knew he had a girlfriend. Jessica. But that didn't change anything for me. I wasn't trying to come between them."
Coach Martinez's eyes narrowed. "Then why did you insist on private study sessions? Why not include Jessica or other students?"
"I didn't insist on anything," Bryan protested. "Jason often preferred one-on-one sessions. He said it helped him focus better."
Mrs. Ringwood made a note on her paper. "Mr. Bramblebush, were you ever physically intimate with Mr. Whilmeton?"
Bryan's heart raced. The question had been sudden and direct. He knew this question was coming but it didn't make it any easier for him to answer. So Bryan answered exactly how he had prepared.
"To my knowledge, I did not initiate any unwanted physical interactions," he firmly stated.
The committee members exchanged glances, their expressions unreadable.
“Please answer the question yes or no." Coach Martinez said.
“I answered to the level I am comfortable answering," Bryan replied as he sat up straight in his chair, his paws curled into fists in his lap.
“From Mr. Whelmeton's complaints, and evidence supplied by corroborating witnesses - about such acts of unwanted physical advances, I want to ask a specific question. Did Mr. Whilemton ever express to you being uncomfortable with any such advances?" Coach Martinez said.
Bryan hesitated, and then slowly nodded, “Yes."
Mrs.Ringtail spoke up again," Did Jason ever initiate any physical interactions with you or make any suggestions toward you that your relationship was anything other than professional or platonic?"
“No," Bryan lied.
Several of the committee members leaned over to one another and passed comments back and forth through quiet whispers. Bryan tried to maintain a steady outward appearance but inside the rabbit felt a wave of despair wash over him. This was his decision. He would not reveal Jason's secrets.
“Thank you Mr.Bramblebush," Mrs.Ringwood said.
"If you have any other evidence or statements to support your version of events," one of the other committee members offered, "now would be the time."
Bryan shook his head. Any proof he had would implicate Jason, reveal things the wolf clearly wasn't ready to face. "Just my word," Bryan whispered.
"Mr. Bramblebush," Mrs. Ringwood said gently, "are you sure there isn't anything else you'd like to add before we adjourn? Anything that might help us understand the situation better?"
Bryan opened his mouth, then closed it again. He thought of all the unspoken words between him and Jason, the moments of connection that had felt so real. The pain he had felt over the last week. But he couldn't betray Jason's trust, even now.
"I... I just want you to know that I never meant to hurt anyone," Bryan said, his voice barely above a whisper. "If I made Jason uncomfortable in any way, I'm truly sorry. But I never harassed him or tried to manipulate him. We were friends."
The room fell silent as the committee members absorbed Bryan's words. The tension in the air was palpable, and Bryan felt as though he could hardly breathe.
Finally, Mrs. Ringwood spoke. "Thank you for your candor, Mr. Bramblebush. We'll take a brief recess to review your statement and compare it with the other evidence we've gathered. Please wait outside, and we'll call you back in when we're ready to continue."
As Bryan stood on shaky legs, he caught Coach Martinez's eye. The cougar's expression held no sympathy, only judgment. Bryan walked out with his head high, even as his heart crumbled. He'd protected Jason's secret, but at what cost?
Bryan made his way to the waiting area. Chase and Nic were waiting for him, but netiher of them spoke as they saw the look on the rabbit's face. Bryan walked between them and sat back down on the couch, he felt as if his world was falling apart. As Bryan's shoulders slumped, chase rested a paw on his knee. Bryan smiled at her weekly as he wondered if somewhere on campus, Jason was thinking about him.
Minutes stretched into what felt like hours as Bryan waited, each tick of the wall clock another reminder of what he stood to lose. His scholarship, his education, his future - all hanging by a thread because he'd dared to care about someone who wasn't ready to care back.
Finally, the door opened. "Mr. Bramblebush," the same beaver from earlier called. "We're ready for you."
Chase stood with Bryan in the waiting room. Bryan turned to her and nodded. Neither spoke - there was nothing left to say. As Bryan walked back into the conference room, Chase watched him disappear as the heavy wooden doors were pulled closed.
The coyote paced the waiting area, her shoes tapping against the tile floor as she grumbled. Nic had been watching her silently finally spoke up.
“I don't think I've ever seen you so worked up like this before."
“Yeah well," Chase responded," I tell you what if I ever get my hands on that Wolf… I'm going to…"
The sound of running footsteps made her ears perk up just as Jason ran past the doorway to the third floor hall. The wolf skid to a halt, his shoes screeching on the floor, and doubling back. As Jason rushed into the waiting room, the wolf was panting heavily with wide eyes, his fur disheveled.
"Where is he?" Jason gasped out as he stepped right up in front of Chase. "Where's Bryan?"
Chase's initial anger faltered at the desperation in his voice. Wordlessly, she pointed to the conference room doors to her right. Jason didn't respond. He ran passed the flabbergasted Coyote and burst into the room just as Mrs.Ringwood was preparing to speak. Bryan's ears shot up at the interruption, his eyes widening at the sight of the wolf. Chase and Nic cautiously peeked their heads in from the waiting room.
“Jason!" Coach Martinez said.
"This is highly irregular," Mrs. Ringwood also said. "Mr. Whilmeton, you need to leave immediately."
"No," Jason's voice was firm despite his heaving chest. "I have something to say, and I'm going to say it whether anyone likes it or not."
"Young man-" Coach Martinez started, but Jason cut him off.
"Bryan didn't do anything wrong," Jason's voice cracked. "I love him. I was scared and I let Jessica take things too far because I was a coward. This is my fault, not his."
The room fell silent. Bryan stared at Jason, his paws trembling in his lap.
"Were you two..." Mrs. Ringwood paused delicately, "in a romantic relationship?"
Jason's ears drooped as shame colored his features. "No. But if I hadn't been such a screw-up coward, I would have liked to have been. Anyone would be lucky to have Bryan as their boyfriend - that's what he deserves. Someone who is there for him, who loves him. Someone, like that—"
The committee members turned to each other, speaking in hushed tones. Coach Martinez's face had turned thunderous, his tail lashing behind him.
"Thank you for your honesty, Mr. Whilmeton," Mrs. Ringwood finally said. "In light of this new information, we will need to have some discussions. Mr.Bramblebush, you are free to leave now."
Bryan sagged with relief, but his joy was short-lived as Mrs. Ringwood continued, "However, Mr. Whilmeton, you'll need to stay."
The coyote's words felt like the dropping of a gavel. Bryan reached toward Jason, but the wolf gave him a sad smile before slowly shaking his head.
“Mr.Bramblebush, please leave the room." Mrs. Ringtwood repeated.
Byran stood and clenched his fists down by his side. His heart was racing. Byran walked over to where Chase and Nic were standing at the doorway and proceeded back out into the waiting room. The beaver from earlier followed Bryan over and closed the door behind him. The last thing Bryan saw was Jason's drooped tail and slumped shoulders as the door closed. Bryan's entire body shook. He didn't know if it was from relief, anger, or something else. He felt shell-shocked as his paws still trembled down by his side.
"What the hell just happened?" Chase demanded, moving to steady him.
Before Bryan could answer, Dreo and Toby burst into the waiting area, both panting heavily. The dalmatian doubled over, dramatically gasping for air.
"Jason... he's... coming..." Toby wheezed. "How is... wolf... so fast? Freakishly fast… air…"
"Yeah, you're about three minutes too late to the party," Chase said dryly. "He already got here."
"What?" Dreo straightened up. "What happened?"
Bryan's voice was barely above a whisper. "He told them everything. He said he... he said he loved me."
"He WHAT?" Toby's exhaustion vanished instantly.
"He burst in and confessed," Bryan continued, still seeming dazed. "Said none of it was my fault. That he was just scared."
"Well, damn," Chase muttered. "Didn't think he had it in him."
"What happened after?" Dreo asked, his tail twitching anxiously.
"They asked me to leave the room..." Bryan's ears drooped as he turned and gestured toward the conference room doors. "Jason is still in there."
"Oh no," Toby breathed. "What's going to happen?"
"I don't know," Bryan wrapped his arms around himself. "They just... He just."
The conference room door opened forcefully and out marched a very red faced Coach Martinez. The cougar walked straight past the group and out in the hallway. Shortly behind him, three other committee members walked next to a weary looking Jason as they escorted him out of the room. As Jason and the group passed by Bryan and his friends, Bryan and Jason briefly locked eyes. Jason offered the rabbit a small smile before diverting his eyes and walking off into the hallway with his escort.
Bryan went to follow after Jason but Chase's hand on his shoulder stopped him.
“Wait," she said. “I don't think we should go with them just yet."
Bryan was going to say something, to argue but stopped as Mrs.Ringwood walked out of the conference room last. She stopped in front of the group and cleared her throat.
“Chase." Mrs. Ringwood said.
“Tammy" Chase replied.
Mrs. Ringwood smirked before a sad smile spread across her muzzle as she slowly shook her head.
“Mr.Bramblebush - Bryan, the accusations have been dropped and there will be no permanent record of this incident associated with your student file."
Bryan's shoulders shook and his heart was still racing in his chest," What about Jason?"
Mrs. Ringwood's lips drew into a thin line, “In light of Mr.Wilmington's conduct he will have to attend a student review committee meeting where we will determine an appropriate punishment for his conduct. He may be facing expulsion."
“What!" Bryan shouted," What if I don't press charges or something? What if I say he didn't do anything wrong!"
Mrs.Ringwood shook her head," I'm afraid it doesn't work that way, Bryan. You can't falsely accuse someone of sexual harassment. That is not acceptable behavior. Mr- Jason could have permanently impacted the academic standing of another student - of you. There are rules within the code of conduct that dictate the response to that type of behavior."
“He didn't do anything wrong," Bryan said as his voice began to crack.
Mrs.Ringwood gave a small shake of her head." Unfortunately, that decision is not up to you. His review will be scheduled for sometime next week. In the meantime, I strongly suggest the two of you stay away from one another until this situation is resolved. "
With that final word from the older coyote, Mrs.Ringwood gave a nod of her head. Then she walked away, past the group, disappearing out into the hallway.
Byran and his friends stood in the waiting room in silence until Toby spoke up.
“So…. Wait- You call your mom Tammy?" Toby said incredulously as he looked over at Chase.
The younger coyote rolled her eyes as she walked over and grabbed Bryan's hand. “C'mon Bryan let's get out of here. We need to get you some air."
