It was a beautiful morning. Doma was up, getting dressed after a nice breakfast. Warren sat relaxing on the couch and watching anime. He had the day off. Doma smiled and waved, as did Warren. The fox man grabbed his keys, and opened the front door.
“Where are you headed?” Warren asked.
“Oh, right. Almost forgot to tell you. It’s an eye doctor appointment.” Doma said.
“Oh? Just for a check up, right?”
“Kind of. Vision in my left eye’s been bothering me. Need to get it looked at.”
“I’m sorry. I hope they find the problem. I know what it’s like to have vision problems personally.” He said, adjusting his glasses.
“Heh, yes indeed. I’m sure they’ll figure it out. Gonna head out now. See ya later Warren.” He said, saluting, before walking out.
“Best of luck. See you later, Doma. Love you” He said, waving and smiling.
“Love you too, Warren.”
After a brief moment, Doma left. Warren sat there, sighed and felt conflicted.
“My partner needs help. I’m sure the doctors will help, but there has to be something I can do to make it even better.” Warren thought, scratching his chin. “Oh! I know! I better get going. Oh, I can’t wait to help Doma! He’ll be so happy! I can just see it now!”
Meanwhile…
Doma arrived. He filled out papers then waited, chatting with friends on his phone to kill time. After thirty minutes, a gray wolf lady in white doctor's attire called him. She took him to the examination room. She shone a light in both eyes, seeing how the pupils dilated and contracted. There’s disturbances in his left eye.
“We will test your sight with some basic lettering. Are you ready?” She said.
“Yes, Ma’am.” Doma said.
“Now just follow my instructions and repeat the letters on the display.”
“Sure thing.” He said, peering into the machine.
“We will start off with your left eye, I want you to repeat the letters from line two once everything is in full view.”
“It’s very blurry from what I can see.”
“Okay, I will readjust and repeat the letters from line three.”
The machine clicked, and Doma’s vision in his left eye improved. However, when he looked at the third line, he saw something unexpected.
“This one, Doma.” Warren said, pointing to it within the machine.
“WARREN!!” Doma shouted, pulling back in shock and anger.
“Is there something wrong?” She asked.
“Oh, my God. I’m sorry ma’am. I know this sounds strange, but my Digimon partner is inside the machine.” Doma said, pointing to it.
She checked it, spooked at the sight of Warren.
“Excuse me? Sir? Please exit the machine at once. Not only are you messing with our equipment, but you’re disrupting your tamer’s appointment.”
“I’m sorry, ma’am. I was only trying to help.” Warren said, saddened.
“How did you get here unnoticed?” She said.
“Cyberspace. Specifically through computer networks. Ma’am, I can explain—“
“Warren, just get outta there already!” Doma said, red faced.
Warren digitally transferred himself out of the machine through a stream of brightly lit, purple code, before he materialized in front of them.
“I’ve had it with you, Warren! When we get home, I’ve got a bone to pick with you!” Doma said, pointing angrily at him, ears twitching.
“Ooooh…” Warren said, looking ashamed. “I’m sorry, hun, but—”
“No buts! Get out! Now!” Doma said sternly, pointing to the exit, shaking.
“Okay…I’m sorry. I’ll leave you be.” Warren said, lifting his hands defensively, before exiting.
He left the building and out into the parking lot, before entering cyberspace through a digital signpost.
“Oh, dear God…I’m screwed. I sure hope Doma will forgive me.” Warren thought, head lowered, before quickly returning home.
An hour later, Doma returned, with a glasses receipt in hand. He sat down in the living room next to Warren on the couch before pocketing it.
“I see everything turned out okay.” Warren said.
“Yes, it did. I have 30/20 vision in my left eye. Means I can’t see small words from a distance. Things would’ve turned out much better, had you not messed with the equipment.” Doma said.
“Is it broken? I can fix it. I can pay for the repairs.”
“No Warren, it just delayed things. It was super annoying.” He said, grunting in annoyance.
“I’m sorry, Doma. I’ll do better next time.”
“I’ve had enough! Apologizing won’t do you any good! I’ve tried to be patient and forgiving.”
“Doma, I—” He said, frowning, ears lowered.
“But nothing! I had to save your ass when you got transformed into a Pikachu and Little Kuriboh by accident with the Digivice.”
“Yes, but I haven’t done it since.” He said, wringing his hands.
“You may have, but that doesn’t change anything! Remember the time you slipped away behind my back to try and use your fame for money on a court show, without letting me know beforehand?”
“I was just trying to help with money!”
“Yes, I’m glad you helped, but the problem is you went behind my back without telling me. Not to mention how you got there in the first place. It was embarrassing!”
“Doma, I think you’re—“ He said, glaring.
“What about that time you used the Digivice to make yourself chubby and broke the jockstrap I got you?”
“Yeah…I know it meant a lot to you. But, I paid you back for it! Doesn’t that count for something?”
“You can’t just throw money at your problems. It’ll do you no good. Don’t get me started on the time I spilled ranch on myself, and you ate me and tried to bathe me with tea.”
“It was just a tea bath. It washed off all the ranch. And besides, I thought you loved being eaten by me.”
“Grrr…Yes I love it! Doesn't mean I wanted to get eaten, AND bathed the wrong way. You know what I said. I wanted a REAL bath, not your stomach. Holy cow!”
“Ooooh…” He said, head lowered.
“Remember when you ate dinner naked when it wasn’t appropriate?”
“Yes…” He said, sinking into his seat.
“Or the time you used the Digivice to sneak inside my body while I slept because that damn bird kept you up at night.”
“Okay, okay…I know I was wrong. I was just trying to help. And I admit I was a little selfish and naive. I’ve tried so hard not to do any of that anymore.”
“What about the time you cheated on Yu-gi-oh cards? Or this other time when you—” He said, before getting cut off.
“Okay, now you’re just being petty.” He said, glaring.
“Sorry about that. There’s been a few times I was petty and shouldn’t have and I apologized for it then, and I’m still sorry about it. Enough about me though, let’s not ignore everything you’ve done wrong. I’ve tried and tried to teach you how to live like a regular person. I understand you come from a background where you lived a life of fame, and you're socially awkward and prone to making dumb mistakes because of it, and I understand that completely. But despite that, and despite how much work I put into teaching you, something’s gotta give. At this point, I ain’t going easy on you.” He said, holding out his right hand. “Hand it over.”
“Hand what over?” Warren said, confused, lowering his ears.
“The Digivice. It’s mine for the next two weeks.” He said sternly.
“But I need it!”
“Nuh uh! No complaints from you, mister. Hand it over, or I’ll take it by force.”
“Okay! Fine!” He said, slowly and hesitantly pulling it out his pocket, before handing it to him.
“Thank you. Hopefully after punishment time is over, you’ll have learnt your lesson. Until then, good luck figuring out how to do without it.” He said, smugly satisfied.
“Ooh, nooo…but Doma? Why are you grounding me? You’re not my dad. I’m an adult!”
“Who's your daddy now?” Doma said, sneering cockily.
Warren sweated, rolled his eyes, shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, and sighed. “Nice one, Doma.
“And one more thing. You are to come home from work immediately until your punishment time ends. Understood?”
“Yes, Doma.” He said, nodding, sighing. Warren sat back, closed his eyes, and sighed. “What am I going to do? Life without will be tough. I have to adapt, slowly but surely. This whole situation just sucks, but I brought it upon myself. My god…this is hard.”
Later that evening…
Warren went to bed, but couldn’t sleep. Not only did he not have the Digivice, but the damn bird pecking and chirping away right outside his window, keeping him up for hours. When it finally flew away and he was about to sleep, the alarm went off.
“Oh, dammit!” Warren thought, scowled, then gasped. “Oh, no! I have to get ready for the gym. I’ve barely slept. T-that’s okay. I’ll just use my Digivice, and—” He reached for the Digivice on the end table, only to find it barren.
“Noooo! I forgot! I’m punished. Crap! Well…I guess I’ll have coffee at the gym. That should do the trick…at least, I hope it does…” He thought, slowly getting out of bed, before fumbling to dress in his black and white gym clothes, before bidding Doma farewell and heading out.
After a short drive through town, he arrived at the gym. Once inside, he crossed paths with two familiar faces: Archie and Linus.
“Good to see ya, Warren! How's it going buddy?” Linus said, patting his back.
“Morning Warren!” Archie said, before he noticed something was off. “Why the long face?”
“Oh…it’s nothing.” Warren said, frowning.
“No need to be shy. What’s bothering ya?” Linus said, patting his shoulder.
“I’d rather not talk about it. Sorry, guys.” Warren said softly.
“Is there anything we can do to cheer you up at least?” Archie said.
“Some coffee would be nice.” Warren said.
“That’d be your expertise.” Linus said, looking at Archie, grinning.
“Oh, don’t remind me.”’Archie said, snickering, rolling his eyes. “Alright, big guy, one coffee, coming up!” He said, taking off to the break room.
He came back with a small, white, paper cup, handing it over. Warren sipped it, sighing contently.
“Thanks. I needed it.” Warren said, forcing a smile.
“No problem. Anything else you need?” Archie said.
“No, thank you. I think I’ll go and do my usual routine.” Warren said, walking off to another room.
“Got it. If you ever decide to talk, we’ll be here.” Linus said, waving.
“I’m good. Don’t worry yourselves.” Warren said, waving back.
“If you say so.” Linus said, laying his hands behind his back. “Yeah, he’s not okay.”
“It’s probably best if we give him space. No sense in pushing any further.” Archie said.
“Yeah, yeah…hurts seeing him like that, though.” Linus said, frowning, sighing.
“I know…” Archie said, going into a different room, Linus following closely behind.
Warren kept a straight face, checking every room in the gym, ensuring all equipment was in check, everyone present satisfied, and nothing else amiss. Satisfied, he now had free time on his hands. He went into a Digimon training room. Pieces of colored metal of all shapes and sizes were scattered about. It was then he realized he could do nothing with them, as they were specifically created by him to be modified with Digivices to form training tools.
Objects could be modified into different tools for many different Digimon, as well as adjustment for stronger forms. Some tools can be made for simple, physical combat training, while others are modified for special techniques. The purpose of said tools is to help strengthen, refine, and perfect them all across the board. There’s even tools made specifically to increase individual stats. In a sense, it’s sort of like level grinding in a role playing game, but more complex. However, due to the situation at hand, Warren was out of luck.
“Dear God! What now? Goodness, this is tough. I wish I hadn't screwed up. I wish I could go back in time and undo every single mistake I’ve made. Dammit all!” Warren thought, frowning, hiding his head in his hands before slumping down, arms drooping.
“Doma…I’m sorry. I’m so sorry for being such a massive screw up. I’m so stupid and naive. You have every right to be angry with me.” He thought, looking and rising up, determined. “But I won’t let it continue. I’ll make things right. I know it’s been hard to adjust, but I can do this. I know I can. I just have to try harder than ever before.” He thought, smiling after psyching up. “Okay, Warren! Let’s do some normal workouts. It wouldn’t hurt to use regular equipment.” He inhaled and exhaled, smiled with his fists clenched, then entered a regular workout room.
He got to work. He tinkered around with different machines, from lifts, treadmills, weights, and so on, starting with the treadmill.
“Oh! I-I’m doing it. I got this. I—ooof!” Warren thought, before face planting hard, rolling back onto the ground. “Oooohohohooo noooohohohooo!” He cried, feeling crushed.
“I can’t do this. Not without my Digvice. I’m not built for this.”
“Do you need help?” Archie said.
“Oh Archie! It’s terrible. I can’t workout without my Digivice.”
“Nonsense! Of course you can! I workout without mine all the time.” Linus said.
“It’s a habit that can be overcome. I can guide ya and show you how it’s down.” Archie said, lifting him up.
“You’ve got this, Warren! Have faith in us, and you’ll succeed!”
Warren sniffed and wiped his tears away. “Thank you…I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Not a problem. Always here to help.” Archie said.
“It’s what we live for. Now get back on that treadmill, and show us what you’re made of!” Linus said.
Warren got up, wiped sweat from his brow and remaining tears from his eyes, then tried again, with his friends' guidance. It took several attempts before he got the hang of it. This continued for several hours, until he adjusted to everything else.
“There you have it. You should be good now.” Archie said.
“I knew you could do it! Proud of ya!” Linus said.
“Hehehe…I guess I did, didn’t I?” Warren said.
And with that, the day was over and done with. He was about to depart, when a couple of people walked by.
They were his friends: Mason, a Charizard, and Finn, a Machgaogaomon from Scotland. Mason wore the same outfit as Warren, while Finn was shirtless. Both were handsome and very muscular, while all three carried duffel bags over their shoulders.
Warren faced them, and forced a smile, but was unable to hide the pain.
“See you tomorrow, guys.” Warren said.
“Heading home already, Warren?” Mason said.
“Aye, this is rare for you, my lad.” Finn said.
Finn approached Warren with a grin. “What’s got your kilt all knotted up, Warren?”
Warren’s smile faded, replaced with guilt and shame. “Oh…I tried to help Doma with his eye exam by entering the equipment…” He said, before turning his back on them, gloomy and teary eyed, ears lowered. “And then he grounded me by taking my Digivice and demanded I head home after work for the next two weeks…”
“Is it that bad, Finn?” Mason said, raising an eyebrow in concern, turning to face Finn.
“It’s a lot worse than you think, Mason. Warren can’t use his card mods after a good workout.” Finn said, sweating.
“Not just after workouts. During workouts, too. I couldn’t use them in the Digimon training room.” Warren said, covering his face in shame.
“Oh, dear God! That’s the worst, lad! You best get yourself home and work things out with the tamer. Best ye not have him wait any longer.” Finn said.
“Dude…I’m so sorry.” Mason said.
Warren hunched over and slowly walked out like a miserable wretch. Finn stopped him.
“It’s okay, Warren. I understand things aren’t like they used to be. Doma isn’t like your old tamer. He doesn’t tolerate things the same way. Not only that, but you weren’t with him from the beginning. You don’t have the same special bond you had with your old tamer. He’s not the same guy you fought so hard to save long ago. You still have stuff to work through, you're still building up your relationship. It’s only natural to have rough patches every now and then. You’ll get through this and you’ll both grow closer from it. I promise.” Finn said softly, patting his back.
“You’re right…it’s not the same. At least I was able to save Doma from the Digital World disaster, unlike my former tamer…”
“Warren…” Mason said.
“I know…I understand.” Finn said.
“I worked hard to save him. Pouring wrestling money to pay for treatments, but I failed. He succumbed to cancer.” Warren said, head lowered.
“You did what you could. That’s all that matters.” Mason said.
“I think I get where you’re coming from. You don’t want to lose Doma.” Finn said, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Worry not. It’s just a personal setback. You’ll overcome this, and you’ll grow closer from it.” Finn said.
“Really? I guess you’re right.” Warren said.
Finn looked at Mason, then at Warren, crossing his arms, smiling softly, nodding.
“I know I am.” Finn said.
“Thank you, Finn. I need to show Doma love and care and accept my punishment fully. It’s the right thing to do. My old tamer never punished me. This is really tough. Oooooh….” Warren said, sighing, then moping right out the gym.”
Finn and Mason looked at each other, and sighed.
“I’m surprised he never got punished. That explains some things. I sure hope he holds out okay.” Mason said.
“He will, laddie. Just give him time. As bad as it is, it’s not the end of the world, ya know?” Finn said, nodding.
“True that. We’ll have his back no matter what.” Mason said, smiling softly.
“That’s the spirit, boy.” Finn said, giving a thumbs up, winking.
One week later…
Warren slowly got the hang of life without the device, either through observation, help, or practice. Situations like working out were overcome through guidance, traveling from place to place through normal means of transportation, and sleep by laying on the couch when the birds stir, just to name a few. Regardless, he longed for it, missing all the fun perks that came with it. At the same time, he dwelled on past mistakes, realized the error of his ways. He knew that, despite his brilliant mind, he struggled a lot with basic things. He wanted to do and be better, but most importantly, wanted his loving relationship with Doma to flourish.
Warren read a history book in the living room, while Doma doodled an intimate piece of art of Warren as a service vore pred on his tablet. He peered up at him.
“You are doing well, Warren. You have lasted a whole week without your Digivice.” Doma said with pride.
Warren sighed. “It’s not easy, Doma. I mean, I have had so many plans with my mod cards this past week.”
Doma went back to the doodle. “I know you meant no harm during my eye exam, but if you want to help, just be by my side is all I ask.”
“I promise Doma. I’ve learned the hard way about all of this…” He said, peering over his book, before something sped towards him.
“Catch Warren!”
The Digivice landed right in his lap and Warren jumped in surprise.
“You’ve earned one free night for good behavior. Just remember to finish your punishment.”
Warren picked it up, looked at it, smiled, and got teary eyed. “Thank you, Doma!”
“Not a problem.” Doma said, smiling.
“I’ll make it worth your while. Just sit back and relax. I’ve got a surprise for you.” Warren said, grinning, before taking off into another room.
“Oh, really? Let’s see what ya got!” He said, grinning.
A few minutes and a bright purple flash later, out came Warren, in his Garurumon form. Doma’s eyes widened in shock and curiosity. Warren smiled softly and approached, curling around him. Doma laid against his big, comfy belly, enjoying its warmth and fluffiness. He huddled close to Doma and wrapped his tail around him, smiling softly and lovingly.
“Feeling comfy there, Doma?”
Doma rested comfortably, sighed, smiled contently, scribbling away. “Indeed I am, Warren. I can see why you wanted to use this mod card right away.”
Warren nodded. “Yep, since you never got to be around me in this form, I wanted to share it with you so much.”
“Thanks, Warren.”
“Can we have one more fun moment, before I give you back the Digivice?”
“Sure, I think I know what it involves.” He said, patting his belly.
