The Epic of Irgano Ayethy: Part I chapter 1
Chapter 1 of part 1 of a larger story. A young fox-prince goes on an adventure. From a world I have been building.
Hello, this story below is from a fictional world of mine I've worked on for a while. The story itself is an Epic and tells the story of a young Fox-prince. Its divided into at least 3 parts and what's written below is the first chapter of Part I. The story is one that I enjoy writing and telling, but it's largely written for world building purposes, hopefully that fact doesn't detract from the story to much.
I hope you enjoy!

Chapter 1:
‘Thaki huyali fuik[1], [2]’ as I travel the plains, I feel as though that’s what I’m doing. Aimlessly wondering the plains without purpose or meaning, but then I remember my oath as one of the last members of what’s left of the Olriishithy Ashito Intythy[3]. An oath I swore to keep and I vowed never to break. An oath that gives me purpose and meaning in this monotonous land. So, with that thought I carry on. A hare I passed by this morning on my wanderings-no travels spoke of a nearby town called Kuthyutyaiki[4]. Which by its name is bound to be an…exciting place. He said to take the Fes Damathy riñacothi[5] south and I should reach it in a few hours. So, that is my heading…but hares can be notoriously…well hare-brained.
Only a few more hours of traveling the grassy and empty Fain Gibo[6]. The Fain Gibo is… insufferable if you are a people person. Only a few scattered frontier towns and warrens. Many of them small and quiet. The Fain Gibo is just grass, grass, grass, flowers, grass, and maybe a creek or two and, if you find a creek! Then praise Afai[7]. Because you might find a…tree! Riveting! But I don’t mind except for the smell. Guyu is pervasive here. Guyu stinks. I work best alone and I have the skylarks and the crickets and most of all Atlosi[8] my horse for company. Even though I enjoy being on my lonesome, I do hope the town is rather interesting after all I’ve visited 2 other towns and 1 warren in the last 2 months and they’re all the same. But I guess it’s my fault, I knew how empty the Fain Gibo is. Especially after staying few months in the Fultrost[9] region.
I was surprised, the Hare must have been right. I smell the town before I see it. It smells like all the other towns and settlements around Rayopklishiost[10] homely, content, and vaguely like a guyu. As I near the town I see it lives up to its name, Yay. Looking at it, it looks like all frontier towns around here except larger, it was probably a frontier center[11]. It's quaint…well actually it’s rather…nice. It's much lively and well-off than other towns around here. The Ghityu[12] is in the center with the rest of the town radiating out and a dirt rampart surrounding it, and the farm lands outside surrounding the rampart. The buildings in the town were, as is standard wooden thatch houses. The farm houses were as well, though some were sod. Under closer inspection there’s one thing different being slightly nicer and larger. The ramparts are being restored, which is interesting. Osidi the black[13] had ordered all towns settled in this land to be built in the way I described, but upon his death most towns no longer maintained the ramparts once the hordes stopped coming this far north. At least around here. This town obviously hadn’t for a long while, but for some reason, they are now. The northern entrance to the city had on its two sides statues of some Old…Pagan Fox…god built under the orders of Osidi the Vile and his Accursed church. But the statues were long defaced and weathered, below them were slightly more well-kept but still weathered statues of Yagho[14] and their brother Neria[15].
As I enter I ensure I look heroic and ineffable, the townsfoxes look at me with what I assume is wonder. Its not often travelers especially ones who look as respectable and maleficent as me like me come to towns like this. I sit up straight and avoid looking down. I smile. I put one paw on the hilt of my blade Starrin[16]and the other on Atlosi’s reins. I see a few whisper between themselves and giggle. Most likely exchanging gossip on my noble knightly aura.
I ride around town taking the main road and a few side streets surveying. It’s a lively town. There are kits playing and…their mothers scalding. I see the Fulyidithud[17] playing Magingo[18]. There’s a good few travelers and minstrels, the king’s road runs through here as to why. I spot a fox I saw working on the ramparts resting in front of the town’s bakery eating some pastries. They smell…ambrosial. I can’t help but smirk at my...impeccable vocabulary. It's sure to woe the Fox into giving up information.
I clear my throat “Hello gentlefox, my name is…Cyalrinu.” I chose a very clever alias. I continue “I, am traveling chronicler.” my false occupation was skillfully chosen for maximum information extraction properties.
“Well Cyalrinu not much to chronicle here. Place lives up to its name. Which by the way, mine is Faalu” the Fox responds.
“I’ll be the judge of that now, seeing as though I’m the chronicler here.” I say in a playful fashion. I begin my interrogation and I skillfully begin establishing trust “So, I want to know…friend, how has the town been doing. Anything of note. I hear the rabbonic[19] hordes have been…” I search for the word best suited for this interrogation “…ravigining the land”
Faalu seems to suppress a smile “Hmmmm I haven’t heard news of any hordes… “ravigining”...recently.” Faalu smiled. Wait a second did this “Faalu” mock me?!? I must have shown my embarrassment because Faalu continued “Don’t worry oldkit[20], I’m just teasing. But to answer your question, the hordes haven’t been this far north. Not since my Great grandpappy was a child. I will say though there’s a different threat.” Faalu lowers his voice “Rumors are warrens and towns have been attacked by strange Rabbits. The elders are even requesting the ramparts be repaired as you might have seen. I don’t know any more than that, I’m just a cabbage farmer, but you could ask the old innkeeper, he hears a lot with that old inn of his you’ll most certainly get some chronicles worth your time. The Inn is on the main road towards the Northern Gate you would have passed it coming in.”
“Thank you…Faalu, this is most…interesting.”
“Welcome.” and I went off to the inn. With this knowledge on hand I pondered. Its quite strange minus the Hordes, the rabbits tend to be a quite folk, especially considering their history. I guess it’s like what my Mentor used to say ‘Things are only getting worse, and not because of us’ I always wondered what the second part meant. I asked him once, he said I’ll understand, in time. But no time to ‘understand’ that right now. I must continue my investigation. I looked carefully at the townsfolk. If one stopped and look they could just see the uneasiness. There was even defensive construction beyond the ramparts. This town was obviously a frontier center under Osidi the Uicala[21]. But all the defensive structures were unkempt after his death. But now even the watchtowers at the cardinal points are being rebuilt. I passed by the smithy and forge. The blacksmith was forging weaponry and his apprentice was working on gates.
I ride up to his smithy and begin conversation “Good day Sir.”
The blacksmith halted his work and in his gruff voice spoke “Good day.” I admired his work.
“Your smithy is impressive.”
“Aye thank you ol’kit I spent a few years when I was a Lad in Ashiosirituka[22] learned from some of the best.”
“Really, the Great city herself. I hope to visit someday.”
“You really should lad. It was quite a spectacle, imagine it in its prime.”
“I know the old chronicles tell of its glory, rivaled only by the great cities of the North kingdom.”
The smith waved his paw in dismissivness “Ah Those northerners. Always think themselves better than us southers.”
“Speaking of us southerners. How come all this work is going on. The hordes haven’t been this far north in a while.”
“It ain’t the hordes. It’s some rabbit cult. I’ve been saying it for years. The rabbits are still sour all these centuries over Osidi the Pious’s little crusades.” I internally scoff at such a statement ‘The Pious’ what a joke “The softfurs have finally listened. Gave every town some coin to build their defenses back up and to arm the militias. Its not enough though.”
“Really? What do you mean.”
“Its only enough money to arm, what 15 foxes…25 if you really cut quality. The money for the defenses came out of the towns pocket it was only enough to build up a single tower.”
“How very…unfortunate.”
“That’s one way to put it. It was nice chat, but I got to back to my work.”
“Of course, thank you for your time.”
“You as well.” It appears the story has deepened. These rabbits pose enough of threat that The Duke[23] has given out money. Rayopklishiost is a laid-back duchy, the other Falotshu riañcothi[24] leave it alone and while its not prosperous its content. The Duke performing such an act is very out of the ordinary.
I continue back up the main road towards the Inn. I stop a few times since the Kits want to pet Atlosi. He’s a fine stead. One of the finest you can find this far north, literally, his breed is from the far far south. Far enough south one would most likely die if they went by land. In the old days Atlosi’s breed was used by the Royal family, their messengers, attendants, and paladins only. Now a few remain this far north. Even with the non-stop, well stopping, I somehow managed to reach the Inn. I see the inn’s stable and the stable kit. I ask the stable kit to take Atlosi and pay him a day’s wages. “You don’t need to pay me, the Innkeeper does that.”
“Fairly?”
“Yep the fairest.”
“Well then, your right I don’t need to pay you, I want to. Go get some sweets or something, I don’t know kit.”
“Thanks!” I tip my head in a very…heroic fashion and the boys runs off. I walk to the Inn’s entrance. I look at it. It’s a nice inn rather mundane though. I enter the inn and I’m greeted by an old fox, the innkeeper. I expected the inn to be mundane. It was in part but strewn across pedestals and displays were obvious trophy and tokens and such from a great adventurer. Probably the son of the Innkeeper.
I must have been staring because the Innkeeper says “Impressive ‘innit seems just like yester I was off gallyhopping ‘cross the land.” I’m taken aback “Don’t look surprised auldkit[25], I don’t look that senile, do I?”
“I’m sorry it’s just I didn’t expect much from this inn.”
“Well there’s always more than meets the eye. What brings you to my inn…?” he gestures for my name.
“Oh! Uh right...Cyalrinu. I’m a chronicler. I’m staying the night and…well chronicling.”
“Hmmm...if I’m correct Cyalrinu is an olden name. The folks up in the midlands ‘round the Great city like it. Means Golden Symbol no?”
“Yes. It does.” I smile that someone got my clever and slyful name, the Inn keeper chuckles and strokes his muzzle.
“A bit much don’t you think, huh auldkit?”
“What do you mean?”
“Calling yourself Cyalrinu, though I guess being a paladin it fits.” I stare in shock.
“As I said before auldkit, I’m old but not yet senile. Your secret safes with me.”
“How did you know?”
“Well, you come in here all broody-like with your gray cloak and oak brooch, your fancy horse and saddle what else would you be? I didn’t think anymore of you were left.” I having recovered my composure spoke
“There aren’t many left.”
“Well auldkit I’m sorry for your loss. Things were a lot safer ‘round here when your order was around. Now a day fox, hare, deer doesn’t matter are on edge.”
“Well, this far out...uh...bandits and such are bound to run amuck.”
“Ah don’t, I’m too old for games Auldkit. You have some idea it ain’t Bandits.” What a rude innkeeper. It must be his age.
“Well, then what is it.”
“Don’t get an attitude. I swear to Manitsh[26] you young paladins are always uppity. I don’t know much more about these cultists than anybody else here.”
“What do, you know?”
“They’ve been around for a while, a long while. Probably datin’ back to the ‘crusades’. I met a few when I was young. But recently they’ve gotten bolder and stronger. They’ve started raiding and burning towns and warrens. I mean they always did. But now its worse, before one or two every few years. Now its weeks. I even hear they take rabbit pups captive for indoctrination into their cult."
“Why?”
“Why?!” The innkeeper leans in and lowers his voice “I forget how dense you young paladins can be, There’s a darkness falling on the land. The Black king and his accursed line might be dead but the blood he spilt on this land isn’t. You know the saying. The living might forget but the dead remember. Let me tell you auldkit. There’s a lot of dead. I really just hope our little town is spared, we were here long before the Black King and his dark “crusade” did what they did.”
“What exactly are you implying?”
“The Aathod[27] might mainly be gone from here but their spirits aren’t and their gods either. Their cult is growing stronger and bolder. Its like a fire. Osidi caused the spark. It been slowly burning, consuming, nurtured, and fed by the darkness, but now it picked up and, its. Ablaze. I might not be a wizard or such but I feel it my bones the… Aishiu[28] or whatever you folk call it is rotting. Ill fortune is ‘round. The harvests are getting smaller and smaller. The herds are getting sick. Even the summer air is colder. Now the Duke tried to deny it. But he can only deny for so long. Eventually he’ll have to get off his…hind from Fes Para[29] and deal with it. Just like a fire the longer you wait the worse it gets. Up north there’s a old warren. It’s the center for the cultists. In my youth I found my way there, got captured. They infest it like maggots.”
“Very well, I’ll set off tomorrow. But until then can I get a bed?” the innkeeper smiles
“Of course auldkit. In fact, it’ll be on the house.”
“I couldn’t accept that.”
“Aww Dali[30] of course you can. Can’t have you worry about money when you have to head to that dark place tomorrow.”
“Well thank you.” The Innkeeper then walked off to talk to his other patrons. I sat down to listen and watch the other patrons.
The Inn was rather lively there were 14 other guests. 6 Foxes, 4 cats, a little mouse pup, two hedgehogs, and a stork. I took a table towards the back of the room. The guests were in song. Singing an old folk tune “Shiuna fia srisri[31]”. The mouse pup was leading the song with his lute. He was…ok. The waiter brought me a delicious yet simple dinner. It was nothing more than a mutton and mushroom stew. Sadly, though it had guyu on the side. I hate guyu. The outside skin has a subtle sweetness and a warm taste, but inside it tastes rotten and foul. As I was eating my stew the song ended. I watched the Innkeeper go up and tell the mouse pup something. The pup then came up to me and sat at my table. I ignored him. The Innkeeper…egregiously thinks I need company. The pup still stared at me. I still ignored him, until he spoke up “Can I have your guyu?”
“Sure pup.”
The pup was offended
“I’m not a pup. I’m…8…no 9 years old!”
“Just eat the fruit.”
The pup gladly obliged "What’s your name?” he asks me.
“Cyalrinu.”
“That’s not your real name.” why do people keep figuring out my alias! Wait the innkeeper told him!
“Did the Innkeeper tell you?”
“No, I just overheard you and the Innkeeper talking.” I probably should have whispered mice hear too much.
“Well my real name is secret.”
“Why?”
“Because it’s very special.”
“Well my mommy said my names special. Its Chii. She said it was my grandfather’s name…” The mood of the mouse saddens “…I miss her.”
“I bet its very special, but mine is much more specialer.” What a Silly little mouse believing his name is better than mine. He lost his mother like me though. “…and I’m sorry about your mother. I…miss mine too. But take heart the dead are with us always.” The mouse is taken aback he speaks much more terse
“My…mommy... isn’t dead, she’s just…loss.” I almost spit out my stew in amazement and…inexplicability.
“How does one lose their mother?”
“My town was attacked by raiders.” This little conversation was beginning to become interesting.
“What do you mean raiders?”
“I…I don’t want to talk about it it makes me…sad.” I must break the Ice. I might get a new adventure out of this conversation. The mouse pup is eating his guyu.
“Hey do you know how we got guyu.” The mouse looks at me suspiciously
“Plants? Are trying to mess with me” “No. I mean the plant how it got here.”
“Seeds.”
“No, I mean...” what an absolutely dense mouse “...the first guyu plant.”
“Oooooohhhhh…no.”
“Well listen little mouse pup”
“I’m not a pup” I ignore the pup
“As the story goes. One day Yagho wanted to play a trick on Rashi[32]. Now Rashi was very hungry”
“Why?”
“I don’t know it’s just part of the story now hush. As I was saying Rashi was hungry so Yagho devised a plan. So, they do the plan.”
“You cant skip the plan, what happened?”
“It’s a very long story. No time. So, any ways Yagho makes the guyu from a tincture from Shlaho’s[33] cauldron and a fruit from Manitsh’s meadow. He convinces Rashi to eat it”
“Why would she do that? Yagho is a trickster.”
“It’s a story. Just go along with it. As I was saying Rashi eats the fruit. But as one knows. You can’t just bite into a guyu. Unlike other fruits the outside is good but the inside is bad. Rashi bit into it and in disgust spit it out. The seeds then spread all over the land. That’s how we got guyu. So, how does a mouse get his town raided. I mean mice villages are kind of small, aren’t they?”
“Your horrible at story telling and my Village was large and wealthy.”
“Well then how did it get raided?”
“I don’t know it…just did.” The mouse was rather sad.
“I..understand.”
The pup perked up “You do?”
“Yes, I do……” I do, even more than pup. At least he has his mother left. “…But I…am a paladin I have no time for kitish things or shallow companionship. Not only that but I’m very smart..er.. intelligent and mature and todly[33]. So, finish your guyu and scamper off.” The mouse pouts and is upset. Eventually he finishes his guyu and scampers off as I asked. I sit there thinking of my serious business and maturity. I yawn a signal from my highly efficient body I need to sleep. I can tell via my advance internal time telling ability that its late at night. So, I stealthy sneak upstairs to my room. As I neared my room I smelt a faint hint of guyu and…mouse! I enter my room and as I suspected “Chii” is sleeping in my room. He’s awake reading by candle light. But doesn’t acknowledge me. Very rude, he’s probably sour from being dismissed. I stand in the doorway side eyeing him. After a minute of standing I stride loudly to my bed. Which is positioned next to his. I sit down loudly. He has yet to acknowledge me. I figure that he needs a lesson in paying attention to his surroundings.
“I’m ignoring you and I’m not a pup.” I was insulted. How dare he ignore me and then be blunt about it!
“Well pup its rude to ignore people. Especially me.”
“Your rude.”
“I’m not rude.”
“then your mean.”
“Your kitish.”
“You stood in the middle of the door way because I didn’t say hi! My mommy called people like you o-box-nis.”
“The word is obnoxious and that’s what you are.” I grumble in a dignified manner at this undignified and very mean pup. But as I do I realize I might have been a touch rude earlier. The pup obviously was still getting over his mother and village.
“I’m sorry I was rude earlier. She and the rest of my family was killed by the Aa hordes.”
“I’m sorry too. My mommy is not dead…just…missing and I feel really bad, do you?”
“I feel fine.” I answer quickly “have you tried looking for her.”
“Yep. But I can’t find her I’ve travelled all the way from across the big river.” The river he’s talking about is most likely The Fultrost. Which is very…impressive…I guess.
“Can I tell you a secret?”
“Of course, I’m the bestest at secrets.”
“I’m…a member of…The Olriishithy Ashito intythy.” The pup’s face lit up “and I swear on my honor that I’ll find your mother.”
“Really?!?”
“Yes really! Of course, it’ll be more of a passive thing, since I’m very busy. But I will find her.” The mouse pup jumped up and down on the bed with joy cheering with delight.
“Now shush up, people are sleep.”
“Ok, Good night…tsakihe.” I had obviously endeared myself to the pup and he gave me a nickname. I don’t know what it means though.
“Goodnight pup.” I blew out the candle and laid in my bed. As a paladin I can appreciate a bed of any quality seeing as most of the time I sleep outside in makeshift camps. But this one was especially comfortable, comfortable enough I drifted right off to sleep.
